Seeing Stripes: A Study Of How Dominance Rank Within A Herd Of Resident Burchell’S Zebra (Equus Burchelli) At Ndarakwai Ranch Correlate To Frequencies Of Other Behaviors., Alexandra Clayton

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Zebra are highly social ungulates that live in harems with a dominance hierarchy. This study attempted to determine if dominance rank within a herd of Burchell’s zebra (Equus burchelli) correlated to frequencies of other behaviors. It was predicted that adult zebra would display the most vigilance, with vigilance decreasing with dominance rank. This study took place at Ndarakwai Ranch in the west Kilimanjaro basin of northern Tanzania from 11/7/10 until 11/22/10. Scans (n=199), follows, and all-group observations were used to collect data on opportunistic sightings of Burchell’s zebra. Zebra were categorized into five age classes: stallion, adult females, sub-adults, juveniles, …

The literature of the U.S. South has found new life in the burgeoning field of inter-American literary studies. Both the U.S. South's literatures and its histories have played key roles in the academic attempt to connect the literatures and histories of the United States to those of Latin America and the Caribbean from the groundbreaking work of Bell Gale Chevigny and Gari Laguardia's 1986 collection, Reinventing the Americas: Comparative Studies of Literature of the United States and Spanish America, through Gustavo Pérez Firmat's "invitation or come-on" to study American literatures side by side in his 1990 edited volume, Do the …

The Stories They’D Tell: Pre-Service Elementary Teachers Writing Stories To Demonstrate Physical Science Concepts, Jennifer Kreps Frisch Oct 2010

The Stories They’D Tell: Pre-Service Elementary Teachers Writing Stories To Demonstrate Physical Science Concepts, Jennifer Kreps Frisch

Faculty Articles

Preservice teachers enrolled in a science content-based course wrote stories that could help their future students understand a science concept. First, participants chose their topic and wrote the story with few guidelines to establish a baseline. In the next part, a different set of students were given a choice of three topics (based on force, electricity, and heat misconceptions), and collaborated to write stories with guidance from the instructor. Stories were analyzed for narrative and science units, and test scores examined. Without guidance, many students struggled to find ways to integrate science within a story. With guidance, participants wrote stories …

Mtprimer3: Pcr Primer Design For Mtdna, Psalm Mizuki Oct 2010

Mtprimer3: Pcr Primer Design For Mtdna, Psalm Mizuki

Theses

Due to their usefulness in tracking the evolution of man and the discovery that they cause many different diseases, the scientific community has become extremely interested in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations. PCR is a key component in nearly all genotyping methods, but using it can be problematic for mtDNA since mtDNA's highly polymorphic nature makes it difficult to design adequate primers. This is because polymorphisms can easily obscure the source sequence, preventing primers from annealing properly. For this reason, we modified a popular online primer design program, Primer3, to create mtPrimer3, a primer design program specially designed to create primers …

Trace Metal Concentrations Across Trophic Levels In Cotton Fields Of Xinjiang Province, China, Jessica Quinn Oct 2010

Trace Metal Concentrations Across Trophic Levels In Cotton Fields Of Xinjiang Province, China, Jessica Quinn

All Student Theses and Dissertations

Trace metals become concentrated in urban and peri-urban soils with the use of agricultural practices and industrial emissions. Fertilizers, liming, sewage sludge, and irrigation water contain metals which accumulate in agricultural fields and pose a risk to humans and wildlife. Coal plants and brickyards release metals into the atmosphere which are deposited on soil and plant surfaces. This research quantifies the concentrations of nine trace metals in three different soil types. A total of 116 rodents were sampled in cotton fields and a desert. Cotton plants and triplicate soil samples were collected with each rodent capture. Soil samples were analyzed …

Enterococcus Faecalis Rnjb Is Required For Pilin Gene Expression And Biofilm Formation, Peng Gao, Kenneth L Pinkston, Sreedhar R Nallapareddy, Ambro Van Hoof, Barbara E Murray, Barrett R Harvey

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Pili in Gram-positive bacteria play a major role in the colonization of host tissue and in the development of biofilms. They are promising candidates for vaccines or drug targets since they are highly immunogenic and share common structural and functional features among various Gram-positive pathogens. Numerous publications have helped build a detailed understanding of pilus surface assembly, yet regulation of pilin gene expression has not been well defined. Utilizing a monoclonal antibody developed against the Enterococcus faecalis major pilus protein EbpC, we identified mutants from a transposon (Tn) insertion library which lack surface-exposed Ebp pili. In addition to insertions in …

In The Wireless Era: Leadless Pacing, Kathy Lee, Chu-Pak Lau Oct 2010

In The Wireless Era: Leadless Pacing, Kathy Lee, Chu-Pak Lau

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Cardiac pacemakers have been the standard therapy for patients with bradyarrhythmias for several decades. The pacing lead is an integral part of the system that serves as a conduit for delivery of energy pulses to stimulate the myocardium. However, it is also an Achilles tendon that directly causes most device complications both acutely during implant and chronically years afterwards. Both durability and optimization of stimulation site are important areas of improvement for manufacturers and implanters. Elimination of the pacing lead and utilization of other means for energy transfer is the only way to avoid lead complications and allow better choice …

Rock The Casbah: Calarts Student Behaviors And Habits, Jeffrey Gatten, Mike Bryant Oct 2010

Rock The Casbah: Calarts Student Behaviors And Habits, Jeffrey Gatten, Mike Bryant

Librarian Publications & Presentations

Adapting the qualitative methodologies from "Studying Students: The Undergraduate Research Project at the University of Rochester", the CalArts' Student Behaviors and Habits (CASBAH) project undertook to learn more holistically about the behaviors of art school students. The research question was simply, "How do students in an artistic and nontraditional setting view and act on the process of discovery?" The study utilized faculty interviews, student interviews, poster surveys, photo surveys, online surveys, and focus groups. The authors learned that art students expect to create their own individualized information-seeking paradigm, one that will not impose an external artistic perspective and may be …

Metabolic Profiling And Fingerprinting For The Detection And Discrimination Of Mechanical Damage In Mushrooms (Agaricus Bisporus) During Storage, Aoife O'Gorman Oct 2010

Metabolic Profiling And Fingerprinting For The Detection And Discrimination Of Mechanical Damage In Mushrooms (Agaricus Bisporus) During Storage, Aoife O'Gorman

Doctoral

Horticultural products such as mushrooms are exposed to external agents during their postharvest life, which are going to affect product quality. Loss of whiteness during storage is particularly important in the mushroom industry. Rough handling and distribution of crops, fruiting body senescence, bacterial and viral infection are among the causes of mushroom discolouration. The aim of this work was to study the use of metabolic fingerprinting and metabolic profiling tools for the detection and discrimination of mechanical damage on mushrooms. This research involved: 1. Investigating whether the chemical changes induced by mechanical damage and ageing of mushrooms could be (a) …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this information age, more and more public statistical data such as population census, household living, local economy and business establishment are distributed over the internet within the framework of spatial data infrastructure. By and large, these data are organized geographically such as region, province as well as district. Usually, they are published in the form of digital maps over the internet as simple points, lines and polygons markers limited or no analytical function available to transform these data into useful information. To meet the analytical needs of casual public data users, we contribute RIGVAT, a rich internet geospatial visual …

Characterization Of Metastasis-Associated Cell Surface Glycoproteins In Prostate Cancer, Lifang Yang Oct 2010

Characterization Of Metastasis-Associated Cell Surface Glycoproteins In Prostate Cancer, Lifang Yang

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Prostate cancer (PCa) is a major health problem in males in the United States. Its lethality is mostly attributed to the primary tumor metastasizing to distant sites that are highly resistant to conventional therapies. Serum Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is the only protein biomarker used in clinic for prediction of prostate cancer recurrence following local therapies. Nonetheless, PSA lacks the ability to predict the behavior of an individual tumor in an individual patient. Therefore, development of reliable biomarkers for detection of metastatic potential in primary tumors, as well as discovery of new therapeutic targets, is in a great need for …

User-Generated Video Sites Effects On Aggression And Interpersonal Relations Of Old Dominion Undergraduate Students, Christopher R. Hodge

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The use of the internet and the activities available over the internet has continuously grown since their creation. A huge proportion of our society utilizes the internet and its available activities. Specifically, as a 2009 Pew Data memo shows over half of users age 18 and over utilize the internet for personal use. The use of user generated video sites (UGVS) is no different, as the largest user-generated video community YouTube boasted in 2009 that every minute YouTube receives ten hours of uploaded video. Given the popularity of user-generated video sites, some have raised concerns about potential negative effects that …
