Volunteer Middle Managers: Human Resources That Extend Programmatic Outreach, Heather Cassill, Ken Culp Iii, Jay Hettmansperger, Marla Stillwell Oct 2010

Volunteer Middle Managers: Human Resources That Extend Programmatic Outreach, Heather Cassill, Ken Culp Iii, Jay Hettmansperger, Marla Stillwell

Journal of Extension

Extension professionals must be able to give volunteers programmatic ownership and the resources and education they need to complete their tasks. However, resources are limited, especially in economic downtimes, making it even more necessary to look at creative ways to bridge the gap between what programs and services can and should be delivered. A middle manager program was developed as a tool to more effectively involve volunteer leaders and assist Extension professionals. Eight position descriptions and corresponding planning aids were developed, in addition to an agent strategy to aid Extension professionals in implementing the middle manager program.

Cognitive Architectures: Structures Of Passion In Joanna Baillie's Dramas, Daniel James Bergen Oct 2010

Cognitive Architectures: Structures Of Passion In Joanna Baillie's Dramas, Daniel James Bergen

Dissertations (1934 -)

The burgeoning Industrial Revolution, coupled with the scent of a far different revolution briskly blowing across the English Channel, nourished a significant amount of aristocratic anxiety throughout late eighteenth and early nineteenth century Britain. The stratifying effects of inherited wealth were dissolving and an ascending middle class was making its way into traditionally upper class social circles, political discussions, and capitalistic ventures. In a letter, written to Sir Walter Scott in the late spring of 1812, Joanna Baillie, the Scottish playwright best known for her Plays on the Passions, 1798 and her theoretical notion of sympathetic curiosity, references the Luddite …

The Consumers’ Dilemma, Christine N. Poje Oct 2010

The Consumers’ Dilemma, Christine N. Poje

Senior Honors Theses

The green-building movement that originated in the late 1900s has grown significantly in recognition amongst consumers and the building community over the last decade. Each day, professionals throughout the world are conducting research, performing experiments, and creating products that conserve the world’s natural resources more efficiently. Consumers are being provided the opportunity to conserve the world’s natural resources, improve their physical health, and reduce their monthly and annual financial expenses. Why do consumers refrain from investing in these products then? Consumers question whether or not the benefits from implementing green-certified products within their home and work environments will outweigh the …

Growth Of Lactic Acid Bacteria: Influence Of Protocooperation, Bacteriophage Infection, And Prebiotic Carbohydrates, Caitlin D. Goin Oct 2010

Growth Of Lactic Acid Bacteria: Influence Of Protocooperation, Bacteriophage Infection, And Prebiotic Carbohydrates, Caitlin D. Goin

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Lactic acid bacteria are a vital part of the fermented food industry and are the subject of much interest and research. Industry is especially interested in using modern molecular approaches to maintain and improve selected strains; several industrial uses could be improved by closer investigation, namely the protocooperation of S. thermophilus and L. bulgaricus, the role of CRISPRs in phage resistance, and the utilization of prebiotic carbohydrates. Questions such as what genes and pathways are shared during milk fermentation between S. thermophilus and L. bulgaricus, when and what genes are active during bacteriophage infection, and how and where …

Frontier: The Making Of The Northern And Eastern Border In Ladakh From 1834 To The Present, Jonathan M. Deng Oct 2010

Frontier: The Making Of The Northern And Eastern Border In Ladakh From 1834 To The Present, Jonathan M. Deng

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Ladakh, despite popular myths of an isolated Himalayan kingdom, has been a land built on trade and regional connections with India to the south, Tibet to the east, and Central Asia to the north. By participating in these social, political, and economic networks, Ladakh was able to amass a rich collection of cultural influences from many far-flung locales. Historically many of these regional interactions have been defined by the physical terrain, which mountain ranges divided Ladakh from other areas, which passes where open and when they were traversable. Even the political boundaries before the partition of India were loosely defined …

Effects Of Experimental Nitrogen Additions On Plant Diversity In An Old-Growth Tropical Forest, Xiankai Lu, Jiangming Mo, Frank S. Gilliam, Guoyi Zhou, Yunting Fang Oct 2010

Effects Of Experimental Nitrogen Additions On Plant Diversity In An Old-Growth Tropical Forest, Xiankai Lu, Jiangming Mo, Frank S. Gilliam, Guoyi Zhou, Yunting Fang

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Response of plant biodiversity to increased availability of nitrogen (N) has been investigated in temperate and boreal forests, which are typically N-limited, but little is known in tropical forests. We examined the effects of artificial N additions on plant diversity (species richness, density and cover) of the understory layer in an N saturated old-growth tropical forest in southern China to test the following hypothesis: N additions decrease plant diversity in N saturated tropical forests primarily from N-mediated changes in soil properties. Experimental additions of N were administered at the following levels from July 2003 to July 2008: no addition (Control); …

Wilderness Beauty: A Means To Resolve Volitional Doubt, Brian T. Scalise Oct 2010

Wilderness Beauty: A Means To Resolve Volitional Doubt, Brian T. Scalise

Liberty Theological Review

Doubt is often part of Christian spiritual life. Matured doubt will influence the will (the volition) so as to keep the Christian doubter from acting like a Christian or even desiring the Christian life. This essay seeks to construct a theory designed to engage and help resolve volitional doubt by use of wilderness beauty. This theory incorporates three areas of study—Land and Leisure Management, Abraham Maslow’s metamotivation theory, and Jonathan Edwards' aesthetic theology—to demonstrate the uniqueness and usefulness of wilderness beauty for resolving volitional doubt. Subsequent to the construction of the theory, practical suggestions for its application are given.

Chosen Nation: Biblical Theopolitics And The Problem Of American Christian Nationalism, Braden P. Anderson Oct 2010

Chosen Nation: Biblical Theopolitics And The Problem Of American Christian Nationalism, Braden P. Anderson

Dissertations (1934 -)

Christian theopolitics presupposes that every salvation narrative entails a politics, and that every politics presumes a story of salvation. This means that the church faces a host of theopolitical structures contending with the Christian story for the allegiance, formation, and identity of Christians. However, theopolitical scholarship has largely overlooked or misunderstood one of the church's major challenges today: nationalism. Moreover, this scholarship is unable to properly address the challenge of nationalism due to an inadequate engagement with biblical theopolitics--particularly that of Old Testament Israel--which, in distorted form, is central to nationalism emanating from within the church.

In order to supplement …

Methodological Developments In The Use Of Stable Isotope Analysis For Reconstructing Paleodiets, Kevin A. Johnston Oct 2010

Methodological Developments In The Use Of Stable Isotope Analysis For Reconstructing Paleodiets, Kevin A. Johnston

Research Papers

Understanding the composition of paleodiets is crucially important for the archaeological investigation of lifeways and subsistence practices within ancient societies. Among the numerous research methods capable of investigating various elements of paleodiets, the use of stable isotope analysis has become increasingly popular. Advantages of this research technique include its ability to recognize multiple types of dietary inputs through the examination of stable carbon and stable nitrogen isotopes, and to investigate dietary composition and variation at an individual level. This research paper examines how this methodology has developed through time. Specific attention will be directed toward both the procedural advances that …

Perceptions And Evaluation Of An Urban Environment For Pedestrian Friendliness: A Case Study, Elizabeth H. Lee Oct 2010

Perceptions And Evaluation Of An Urban Environment For Pedestrian Friendliness: A Case Study, Elizabeth H. Lee

Master's Theses

Public health is an increasingly important issue addressed from both environmental and public health sectors for the future development of urban environments. From a planning perspective, one possible solution is to increase walkability throughout the cities. Many assessment methods are being developed and administered to evaluate the quality of existing urban environments to promote walkable cities/communities. The results from using these methods provide policymakers and stakeholders with valuable information regarding the existing physical conditions of the environment. Although several US cities started to develop and refocus plans toward pedestrian-oriented policies approaches, results from this particular study determined that the quality …

Comparisons Of Fish Species Inside And Outside Of Marine Protected Areas Off The South Central Coast Of California, David E. Rasmussen Oct 2010

Comparisons Of Fish Species Inside And Outside Of Marine Protected Areas Off The South Central Coast Of California, David E. Rasmussen

Master's Theses

COMPARISONS OF FISH SPECIES INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF MARINE PROTECTED AREAS OFF THE SOUTH CENTRAL COAST OF CALIFORNIA

David E. Rasmussen

From 2004-2008 and 2008-2009 Cal Poly University researchers conducted two separate tag and recapture studies of nearshore fish populations along California’s central coast. Three locations were sampled that have experienced different degrees of fishing pressure. Big Creek MPA has been closed to all fishing from 1993 onwards and is the farthest from port of all locations. Cambria lies closest to port of the three locations and because of this has the highest fishing pressure. Piedras Blancas lies midway between …

Monitoring Carboplatin Ototoxicity With Distortion-Product Otoacoustic Emissions In Children With Retinoblastoma, Shaum Bhagat, Johnnie Bass, Stephanie White, Ibrahim Qaddoumi, Matthew Wilson, Jianrong Wu, Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo

Faculty Publications

ObjectiveCarboplatin is a common chemotherapy agent with potential ototoxic side effects that is used to treat a variety of pediatric cancers, including retinoblastoma. Retinoblastoma is a malignant tumor of the retina that is usually diagnosed in young children. Distortion-product otoacoustic emission tests offer an effective method of monitoring for ototoxicity in young children. This study was designed to compare measurements of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions obtained before and after several courses of carboplatin chemotherapy in order to examine if (a) mean distortion-product otoacoustic emission levels were significantly different; and (b) if criterion reductions in distortion-product otoacoustic emission levels were observed in …

Development Of Predatory Behavior In Juvenile Fish: Evidence Of Attraction To Prey Chemical Alarm Cues By Naïve Coral Reef Predator, (Pseudochromis Fuscus), Shannon Odell Oct 2010

Development Of Predatory Behavior In Juvenile Fish: Evidence Of Attraction To Prey Chemical Alarm Cues By Naïve Coral Reef Predator, (Pseudochromis Fuscus), Shannon Odell

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Chemical alarm cues and their function on the coal reef has become an area of increasing interest in the study of predator-prey dynamics (Smith 1999, Friesen and Chivers 2006, Holmes and McCormick 2010). One prominent question in understanding the evolutionary basis for the development of chemical alarm cues is determining how these cues benefit the sender directly (Chivers 1996). One way chemical alarm cues found in freshwater systems have been found to benefit the sender of the cue is through attraction of secondary predators to the chemical alarm cue, which then interfere with the primary attack and increase chances of …

Crouching Tiger Hidden Goiter Belt: A Critique Of Health Care And Universal Salt Iodization In The Tsum Valley, Julian Goetz, Vanessa Soetanto Oct 2010

Crouching Tiger Hidden Goiter Belt: A Critique Of Health Care And Universal Salt Iodization In The Tsum Valley, Julian Goetz, Vanessa Soetanto

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Tsum Valley, opened to visitors in 2008, has only recently begun the process of modernization. The health of the population is still not stable with regards to nutrition, and the health care system is still inadequate due to geographic conditions of remoteness and difficulty of access. The health condition is further exacerbated by political interactions affecting iodine consumption. This paper presents original information collected via interviewing processes throughout the valley and in Kathmandu over the course of a four-week period. The results include the inadequacy of health care facilities in treating endemic health issues and of the failure of …

A Trekker’S Guide To The Khumbu Himalaya: Trailside Geology Along The Everest Base Camp Trek, Brigit Anderson Oct 2010

A Trekker’S Guide To The Khumbu Himalaya: Trailside Geology Along The Everest Base Camp Trek, Brigit Anderson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Himalaya is the youngest and highest mountain range in the world. It thus provides a wonderful field lab for studying the mountain building process in action. The trek in the Khumbu (northeastern Nepal) from Lukla to Everest Base Camp takes you through the Higher Himalaya and some interesting geological features. This project gives an introduction to the larger Himalaya geology and more specifically geology of the Khumbu Region. It then follows the Lukla-Everest Base Camp (EBC) trekking route pointing out interesting geologic features along the way. Some of the concepts explained in this project are somewhat technical. For this …

Sperm Use During Egg Fertilization In The Honeybee (Apis Mellifera), Maria Rubinsky Oct 2010

Sperm Use During Egg Fertilization In The Honeybee (Apis Mellifera), Maria Rubinsky

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

A technique to quantify sperm use in honeybee queens (Apis mellifera) was developed and used to analyze the number of sperm used in different groups of honeybee queens. To do this a queen was placed on a frame with worker cells containing no eggs, and an excluder box was placed around her. The frame was put back into the colony and removed after two and a half hours. This method reduced stress on the queen so that she felt comfortable enough to lay eggs and did not require the queen to be killed so that she could be sampled multiple …

Landscape Factors Impacting Survival Of Sympatric Red-Necked Wallabies (Macropus Rufogriseus) And Swamp Wallabies (Wallabia Bicolor) In Urbanized Areas, Karen Zusi Oct 2010

Landscape Factors Impacting Survival Of Sympatric Red-Necked Wallabies (Macropus Rufogriseus) And Swamp Wallabies (Wallabia Bicolor) In Urbanized Areas, Karen Zusi

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Urbanization and infrastructure build-up often includes many processes that can damage the natural environment in surrounding areas. Road, powerline, and dam construction, as well as mining, drilling, and overall land-clearing, have severe impacts that resonate through the adjacent wildlife communities. Some species, however, are able to persist in the fringes of urban environments; the swamp wallaby, Wallabia bicolor, is one such example in Australia. A different species of macropod, the red-necked wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus), is similar to the swamp wallaby in many ways but has failed to persist in the outskirts of urban areas. This study aimed to quantitatively differentiate …

Formal Education And The Rural Dwelling Vezo Of Ankilibe: A Study Of The Relationship Between Daily Life Of The Vezo And The Public Education System In Madagascar, Katherine Mcneil Oct 2010

Formal Education And The Rural Dwelling Vezo Of Ankilibe: A Study Of The Relationship Between Daily Life Of The Vezo And The Public Education System In Madagascar, Katherine Mcneil

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

From the introduction These three tangible factors: lack of teachers and classrooms, poverty of Malagasy citizens, and far distances to travel to reach school, all inhibit young Malagasy people from receiving formal education. After having completed research with people living in the isolated commune of Faux Cap, the proviseur (director) of the Lycé Pole in Fort Dauphin, administrators of schools in Tulear, and students in Fianarantsoa, I found that the three tangible factors heeding school attendance are the most important reasons why children say that they cannot go to school, and they most seriously affect rural dwelling people who are …
