Measurement And Determinants Of Efficiency In Crop Production In Nepal, Satis Devkota, Mukti Upadhyay Oct 2010

Measurement And Determinants Of Efficiency In Crop Production In Nepal, Satis Devkota, Mukti Upadhyay

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Our study is an attempt to quantify efficiency of farmers and estimate the gap from its potential given the technology currently prevailing in Nepal. To estimate inefficiency in agriculture, we use a stochastic frontier production function. We also use OLS to compare the results for the Cobb-Douglas and translogarithmic functions to determine which of the two provides a better representation of the data. It is also interesting to examine what these functions yield for the levels of technical inefficiencies, returns to scale, and the elasticities of output with respect to different inputs.

The Beetles Of The Island Of St. Vincent, Lesser Antilles (Insecta: Coleoptera); Diversity And Distributions, Stewart B. Peck Oct 2010

The Beetles Of The Island Of St. Vincent, Lesser Antilles (Insecta: Coleoptera); Diversity And Distributions, Stewart B. Peck

Insecta Mundi

This paper summarizes the information published on the beetle fauna of the island of St. Vincent (excluding the Grenadine islands). The fauna contains 62 families, with 371 genera, and 536 species. The families with the largest number of species are Staphylinidae (128), Curculionidae (54), Chrysomelidae (47), Scarabaeidae (31), Tenebrionidae (30), and Cerambycidae (29). At least 17 species (3.17%) were probably accidentally introduced to the island by human activities. One hundred four species (19.40%) are endemic (restricted) to the island and likely speciated on the island. One hundred twenty species (22.39%) are shared only with other islands of the Lesser Antilles …

Swine Flu: A Preliminary Study Of The Planning And Policies Of Nepal To Deal With H1n1., Rojee Rajbanshi, William S. Carter

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

To predict the proper measures to be taken in harmonizing the global health with the emergence of the new influenza virus subtype capable of uncertain pandemic threat, WHO has developed guidelines regarding the preparedness and preventive measures and requires every country to follow the guidelines in formulating national pandemic and response plans plus implementing the measures effectively with regular monitoring. With the emergence of H1N1 infection worldwide, the Government of Nepal has considered the “National Avian Influenza and Influenza Pandemic Preparedness and Response Plan” (NAIIPPRP), the plan developed in 2005 to deal with the Avian Influenza. The main objective of …

Conflict Resolution And Institutional Arrangements For Flood Disaster Management On Indo Nepal Fringe: Focus On Kosi Basin, N.M.P. Verma Oct 2010

Conflict Resolution And Institutional Arrangements For Flood Disaster Management On Indo Nepal Fringe: Focus On Kosi Basin, N.M.P. Verma

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

The purpose of this paper is to highlight riparian conflicts in Kosi basin of Indo-Nepal region. The paper focuses on characteristics of the basin, intensity of conflict, conflict minimization process, and areas of joint venture. It finds that institutional reform for minimum common governance (MCG) may yet lead to a sustainable solution. The paper proposes the modalities of MCG and its modus operandi and discusses plan appraisal, ex post evaluation, monitoring, and resource sharing. Planning by a single country may not solve this chronic problem.

The Biocomplexity Of Benthic Communities Associated With A Shallow-Water Hydrothermal System In Papua New Guinea, David J. Karlen Oct 2010

The Biocomplexity Of Benthic Communities Associated With A Shallow-Water Hydrothermal System In Papua New Guinea, David J. Karlen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Shallow-water hydrothermal vents occur world-wide in regions of volcanic activity. The vents located at Tutum Bay, Ambitle Island, Papua New Guinea are unique in that the vent fluids and surrounding sediments contain some of the highest concentrations of arsenic in a natural system. This study addresses the effects of the vent system on the benthic communities, focusing on the eukaryotes, macrofauna, meiofauna and bacteria.

Samples were collected in November 2003 and May/June 2005. Analysis of the 2003 macrofaunal samples indicated that pH, rather than arsenic was influencing the benthic community, and that the hydrothermal influence occurred at a greater distance …

Membrane Anchoring Subunits Specify Selective Regulation Of Rgs9·Gbeta5 Gap Complex In Photoreceptor Neurons, Yan Cao, Alexander V. Kolesnikov, Ikuo Masuho, Vladimir J. Kefalov, Kirill A. Martemyanov

Open Access Publications

The RGS9·Gβ5 complex is the key regulator of neuronal G-protein signaling and shows remarkable selectivity of subunit composition. In retinal photoreceptors, RGS9·Gβ5 is bound to the membrane anchor R9AP and the complex regulates visual signaling. In the basal ganglia neurons, RGS9·Gβ5 is instead associated with a homologous protein, R7BP, and regulates reward circuit. Switching this selective subunit composition of the complex in rod photoreceptors allowed us to study the molecular underpinning of signaling specificity in diverse G-protein pathways. We have found that both membrane anchoring subunits play a conserved role in regulating protein levels of RGS9·Gβ5 and enhancing the ability …

Genome-Wide Patterns Of Gene Expression During Aging In The African Malaria Vector Anopheles Gambiae, Mei Hui Wang, Osvaldo Marinotti, Anthony A. James, Edward Walker, John Githure, Guiyun Yan

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The primary means of reducing malaria transmission is through reduction in longevity in days of the adult female stage of the Anopheles vector. However, assessing chronological age is limited to crude physiologic methods which categorize the females binomially as either very young (nulliparous) or not very young (parous). Yet the epidemiologically relevant reduction in life span falls within the latter category. Age-grading methods that delineate chronological age, using accurate molecular surrogates based upon gene expression profiles, will allow quantification of the longevity-reducing effects of vector control tools aimed at the adult, female mosquito. In this study, microarray analyses of gene …

Cortical Representation Of Lateralized Grasping In Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes): A Combined Mri And Pet Study, William D. Hopkins, Jared P. Taglialatela, Jamie L. Russell, Talia M. Nir, Jennifer Schaeffer

Faculty Articles

Functional imaging studies in humans have localized the motor-hand region to a neuroanatomical landmark call the KNOB within the precentral gyrus. It has also been reported that the KNOB is larger in the hemisphere contralateral to an individual's preferred hand, and therefore may represent the neural substrate for handedness. The KNOB has also been neuronatomically described in chimpanzees and other great apes and is similarly associated with handedness. However, whether the chimpanzee KNOB represents the hand region is unclear from the extant literature. Here, we used PET to quantify neural metabolic activity in chimpanzees when engaged in unilateral reach-and-grasping responses …

Re-Examining Acts Of God, Jill M. Fraley Oct 2010

Re-Examining Acts Of God, Jill M. Fraley

Pace Environmental Law Review

Applying recent critiques of the construction of nature as distinct from and excluding all that is human, this article examines the concept of an act of God, which exculpates defendants when a disaster is “solely caused” by a “natural” event. The doctrine incorporates a classical separation of the human from the natural—a separation that is now refuted in geography and philosophy. While other areas of law such as patents, food and drug law, and land use policy have begun to acknowledge our changing understandings of human and nature, we have yet to re-examine the acts of god doctrine, which is …
