Immunomodulation With Il-4rα Antisense Oligonucleotide Prevents Respiratory Syncytial Virus-Mediated Pulmonary Disease, Michael J. Ripple, Dahui You, Srinivasa Honnegowda, Joseph D. Giaimo, Andrew B. Sewell, David M. Becnel, Stephania A. Cormier

Faculty Publications

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes significant morbidity and mortality in infants worldwide. Severe RSV infections in infants cause bronchiolitis, wheeze, and/or cough and significantly increase the risk for developing asthma. RSV pathogenesis is thought to be due to a Th2-type immune response initiated in response to RSV infection, specifically in the infant. Using a neonatal mouse system as an appropriate model for human infants, we sought to determine whether local inhibition of IL-4Rα expression during primary RSV infection in the neonate would prevent Th2-skewed responses to secondary RSV infection and improve longterm pulmonary function. To reduce IL-4Rα expression, antisense oligonucleotides …

Estimate Of The Maximum Sustainable Yield Of Sergestid Shrimp In The Waters Off Southwestern Taiwan, Chin-Cheng Wu, Ching-Hsiewn Ou, Wen-Pei Tsai, Kwang-Ming Liu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The sergestid shrimp, Sergia lucens is one of the major marine resources in the waters off southwestern Taiwan. The maximum sustainable yield (MSY), total allowable catch (TAC) and fishing effort at MSY (EMSY) of the sergestid shrimp in this area were estimated to be 1008 tons, 907 tons and 11292 vessel-day, respectively by using the surplus production model with deterministic observation-error estimator approach based on a catch and effort series from 1997-2008. Furthermore, the mean MSY, TAC, and EMSY with 95% CI were estimated to be 1011 (842-1243) tons, 910 (758-1119) tons, and 11296 (10758- 11807) vessel-day, respectively from the …

Evaluation Of Soybean Meal As A Protein Source And Its Effect On Growth And Nitrogen Utilization Of Black Sea Turbot (Psetta Maeotica) Juveniles, Murat Yigit, Sebahattin Ergün, Ali Türker, Burcu Harmantepe, Adnan Erteken

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Three experimental diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous (550 g kg-1 protein) and iso-caloric (20.5 kJ gross energy g-1 diet) by substituting fish meal (FM) for defatted soybean meal (SBM) at levels of 0, 10 and 20% replacement in order to evaluate the effects of replacing FM with defatted SBM in diets for Black Sea turbot. Diets were fed to triplicate groups of young Black Sea turbot (mean initial weight of 30.2 ± 0.2 g) for 60 days. Turbot fed all three diets had no significant difference (P > 0.05) in final weight, specific growth rate, nutrient utilization, Nitrogen loss or …

Molecular Mechanism Of Agc Kinases In Human Malignant, Shaokun Shu Oct 2010

Molecular Mechanism Of Agc Kinases In Human Malignant, Shaokun Shu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The maintenance of normal cell function and tissue homeostasis is dependent on the precise regulation of multiple signaling pathways that control cellular decisions to either proliferate, differentiate, arrest cell growth, or initiate programmed cell death (apoptosis). Cancer arises when clones of mutated cells escape this balance and proliferate inappropriately without compensatory apoptosis. Deregulated cell growth occurs as a result of perturbed signal transduction that modulates or alters cellular behavior or function to keep the critical balance between the rate of cell-cycle progression (cell division) and cell growth (cell mass) on one hand, and programmed cell death (apoptosis, autophagy) on the …

Molecular Detection Of The Toxic Marine Diatom Pseudo-Nitzschia Multiseries, Jennifer A. Delaney Oct 2010

Molecular Detection Of The Toxic Marine Diatom Pseudo-Nitzschia Multiseries, Jennifer A. Delaney

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The marine diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia includes species that produce domoic acid, a neurotoxin responsible for illness and mortality in both humans and marine wildlife. Because of the expertise and time required for the microscopic discrimination of species, molecular methods that monitor environmental concentrations of Pseudo-nitzschia provide a rapid alternative for the early detection of blooms and prediction of toxin accumulation. We have developed a nucleic acid sequence-based amplification with internal control RNA (IC-NASBA) assay and a quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) assay for the detection of the toxic species P. multiseries targeting the ribulose- 1,5-biphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase small subunit (rbcS) gene. …

Statins are widely used to lower cholesterol levels by inhibiting cholesterol biosynthesis. Some evidence has indicated that statins might have therapeutic and preventive benefits for Alzheimer's disease (AD). We and others also have shown the beneficial effect of statin treatment in reversing learning and memory deficits in animal models of AD. However, data from clinical trials are inconclusive. We previously documented that the adenovirus vector encoding 11 tandem repeats of Aβ1-6 fused to the receptor-binding domain (Ia) of Pseudomonas exotoxin A, AdPEDI-(Aβ1-6)(11), is effective in inducing an immune response against amyloid-β protein (Aβ) and reducing brain Aβ load in Alzheimer's …

Double Vision, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University Oct 2010

Double Vision, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2010-2011 PEAK Explores the Answer: Experiments in Arts & Technology

Did you ever hope to see the world anew when looking through a crystal prism? Double Vision offers a similar experience, only the entire stage becomes the optical illusion. An interdisciplinary encounter created by an acclaimed choreographer and world-class architects, Double Vision animates the stage in paradoxical ways. The ephemeral nature of Carolyn Carlson’s dance is exposed by Electronic Shadow (architect Naziha Mestaoui and media artist Yacine Aït Kaci). Blurring the distinction between illusion and reality, Double Vision leaves a convincing argument for the existence of a parallel universe.
