Using Computer-Based Testing With Young Children, Susan K. Barnes
Using Computer-Based Testing With Young Children, Susan K. Barnes
NERA Conference Proceedings 2010
The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility of using computer-based tests (CBT) with children in preschool and kindergarten. Children were administered paper-and-pencil (PPT) and CBT versions of a rhyme awareness scale. An embedded mixed methods design was used to explore to what extent children could complete the CBT independently, how children reacted to the tests, and how the results from the CBT and the PPT compared. Findings were that children needed help with the CBT and enjoyed using the computer. Preliminary evidence indicated that test mode mattered. These results have implications for future test development and use.

Flat Zipper-Unfolding Pairs For Platonic Solids, Joseph O'Rourke
Flat Zipper-Unfolding Pairs For Platonic Solids, Joseph O'Rourke
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
We show that four of the five Platonic solids' surfaces may be cut open with a Hamiltonian path along edges and unfolded to a polygonal net each of which can "zipper-refold" to a flat doubly covered parallelogram, forming a rather compact representation of the surface. Thus these regular polyhedra have particular flat "zipper pairs." No such zipper pair exists for a dodecahedron, whose Hamiltonian unfoldings are "zip-rigid." This report is primarily an inventory of the possibilities, and raises more questions than it answers.

Chaucer, Books, And The Poetic Library, David C. Kupfer
Chaucer, Books, And The Poetic Library, David C. Kupfer
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Geoffrey Chaucer (c. 1342 – 1400) is the great medieval inventor of words for the English language, words including “library.” He uses that term to represent a distinct spatial home that is organized with skill to find knowledge from the study of texts. A bibliophile himself, Chaucer celebrates the joys and trials of reading while overlooking the library as a substantive learning haven. The location where learning transpires is always secondary to the contents of the books themselves. The library is a documented medieval bedrock to education, even wisdom, but it is little more than a shadow in Chaucer’s poetry. …

An Artistic Horizon: Content Analysis Of Caricatures With Library And Information Science Themes, Alireza Isfanyari-Moghaddam, Vahideh Kashi-Nahanji
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This research analyzes caricatures related to Library and Information Science (LIS), to identify LIS aspects in order to recognize valid criticisms and offer recommendations. Two hundred fifty cartoons and caricatures relating to the topics "book", "library", and "LIS" were gathered and analyzed by means of content analysis. The images were categorized into eight groups for analysis.

Adenovirus-5 Infection Affects Lipid Metabolism In Hepatic And Adipose Tissues, Marianna Sukholutsky
Adenovirus-5 Infection Affects Lipid Metabolism In Hepatic And Adipose Tissues, Marianna Sukholutsky
Theses and Dissertations
Our recent studies have shown a link between Adenovirus-5 (Ad-5) and elevated lipids, which prompted the hypothesis that Ad-5 infection might augment hepatic and/or adipose tissue lipid metabolism. To test our hypothesis, mice were infected with Ad-5 and screened for changes in lipogenesis and plasma markers associated with the metabolic syndrome. We observed increased expression of sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 (SREBP-1) in infected liver tissues, but not in adipose tissues and this correlated with elevated plasma and hepatic triglyceride levels. Elevated expression of adiponectin was seen in Ad-5 infected adipose tissues and this correlated with phosphorylated AMPK in …

Patents (University of Northern Iowa)
A computer simulation and virtual reality system simulates the use of a blasting nozzle to remove one or more coatings and/or rust from a virtual surface. The user operates an electronic controller in the form of a blasting nozzle that outputs a signal indicating whether the blasting nozzle controller is in an "on" position or in an "off" position. The system also has a motion tracking system that tracks the position and orientation of the blasting nozzle controller with respect to the virtual surface defined on the display screen. Simulation software in a computer generates virtual blast pattern data, and …

The combination of sucrose and starch in the presence of surface-adsorbed salivary α-amylase and bacterial glucosyltransferases increase the formation of a structurally and metabolically distinctive biofilm by Streptococcus mutans. This host-pathogen-diet interaction may modulate the formation of pathogenic biofilms related to dental caries disease. We conducted a comprehensive study to further investigate the influence of the dietary carbohydrates on S. mutans-transcriptome at distinct stages of biofilm development using whole genomic profiling with a new computational tool (MDV) for data mining. S. mutans UA159 biofilms were formed on amylase-active saliva coated hydroxyapatite discs in the presence of various concentrations …

Dynamic Evolution Of Precise Regulatory Encodings Creates The Clustered Site Signature Of Enhancers, Justin Crocker, Nathan Potter, Albert Erives

Concentration gradients of morphogenic proteins pattern the embryonic axes of Drosophila by activating different genes at different concentrations. The neurogenic ectoderm enhancers (NEEs) activate different genes at different threshold levels of the Dorsal (Dl) morphogen, which patterns the dorsal/ventral axis. NEEs share a unique arrangement of highly constrained DNA-binding sites for Dl, Twist (Twi), Snail (Sna) and Suppressor of Hairless (Su(H)), and encode the threshold variable in the precise length of DNA that separates one well-defined Dl element from a Twi element. However, NEEs also possess dense clusters of variant Dl sites. Here, we show that these increasingly variant sites …
Phenotypic And Genotypic Analysis Of In Vitro Selected Artemisinin Resistant Plasmodium Falciparum, Matthew Scott Tucker
Phenotypic And Genotypic Analysis Of In Vitro Selected Artemisinin Resistant Plasmodium Falciparum, Matthew Scott Tucker
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Artemisinin and its derivatives provide faster clearance of parasitemia than any other antimalarial drugs and these drugs are part of frontline combination therapies in areas where drug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum exists. Clinical resistance to artemisinins is emerging on the Thailand-Cambodia border, making it imperative to investigate mechanisms of artemisinin resistance. Previous work in our laboratory showed ring-stage parasites enter a dormant state after exposure to artemisinin. We hypothesize that this period of dormancy is directly related to recrudescence and prolonged parasite clearance times in patients, and possibly resistance. The target of artemisinin is currently unknown, and potential resistance mechanisms are not …
Gender And Cocaine Use Influence The Expression Of Urinary Markers Of Inflammation And Oxidative Stress, Marie Meagher Bourgeois
Gender And Cocaine Use Influence The Expression Of Urinary Markers Of Inflammation And Oxidative Stress, Marie Meagher Bourgeois
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not gender differences may be present in the expression of a number of urinary proteins which may serve as markers of inflammation and oxidative stress. Males and females have different patterns of illness and different life spans, suggesting basic biological traits exert significant control on the incidence of rhabdomyolysis, renal failure, atherosclerosis, myocardial ischemia, myocardial contraction band formation, autoimmune disorders and general inflammatory diseases. Men are at greater risk for cardiovascular disease; however women, particularly elderly women, have higher fatality rates due to heart failure. Renal diseases progress far more …
