The Combined Effect Of Environmental And Host Factors On The Emergence Of Viral Rna Recombinants, Hannah M. Jaag, Peter D. Nagy Oct 2010

The Combined Effect Of Environmental And Host Factors On The Emergence Of Viral Rna Recombinants, Hannah M. Jaag, Peter D. Nagy

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Viruses are masters of evolution due to high frequency mutations and genetic recombination. In spite of the significance of viral RNA recombination that promotes the emergence of drug-resistant virus strains, the role of host and environmental factors in RNA recombination is poorly understood. Here we report that the host Met22p/Hal2p bisphosphate-3'-nucleotidase regulates the frequency of viral RNA recombination and the efficiency of viral replication. Based on Tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV) and yeast as a model host, we demonstrate that deletion of MET22 in yeast or knockdown of AHL, SAL1 and FRY1 nucleotidases/phosphatases in plants leads to increased TBSV recombination …

Plant Phenolics: Extraction, Analysis And Their Antioxidant And Anticancer Properties, Jin Dai, Russell J. Mumper

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Phenolics are broadly distributed in the plant kingdom and are the most abundant secondary metabolites of plants. Plant polyphenols have drawn increasing attention due to their potent antioxidant properties and their marked effects in the prevention of various oxidative stress associated diseases such as cancer. In the last few years, the identification and development of phenolic compounds or extracts from different plants has become a major area of health- and medical-related research. This review provides an updated and comprehensive overview on phenolic extraction, purification, analysis and quantification as well as their antioxidant properties. Furthermore, the anticancer effects of phenolics in-vitro …

Alkylation Of The Tumor Suppressor Pten Activates Akt And Β-Catenin Signaling: A Mechanism Linking Inflammation And Oxidative Stress With Cancer, Tracy M. Covey, Kornelia Edes, Gary S. Coombs, David M. Virshup, Frank A. Fitzpatrick Oct 2010

Alkylation Of The Tumor Suppressor Pten Activates Akt And Β-Catenin Signaling: A Mechanism Linking Inflammation And Oxidative Stress With Cancer, Tracy M. Covey, Kornelia Edes, Gary S. Coombs, David M. Virshup, Frank A. Fitzpatrick

Faculty and Staff Publications

PTEN, a phosphoinositide-3-phosphatase, serves dual roles as a tumor suppressor and regulator of cellular anabolic/catabolic metabolism. Adaptation of a redox-sensitive cysteinyl thiol in PTEN for signal transduction by hydrogen peroxide may have superimposed a vulnerability to other mediators of oxidative stress and inflammation, especially reactive carbonyl species, which are commonly occurring by-products of arachidonic acid peroxidation. Using MCF7 and HEK-293 cells, we report that several reactive aldehydes and ketones, e.g. electrophilic α,β-enals (acrolein, 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal) and α,β-enones (prostaglandin A(2), Δ12-prostaglandin J(2) and 15-deoxy-Δ-12,14-prostaglandin J(2)) covalently modify and inactivate cellular PTEN, with ensuing activation of PKB/Akt kinase; phosphorylation of Akt substrates; increased …

Investigating The Mode Of Action Of A Novel N-Sec-Butylthiolated Beta-Lactam Against Staphylococcus Aureus, Katherine Rose Prosen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

N-sec

-butylthioloated β-lactam (NsβL) is a novel beta-lactam antimicrobial with a mechanism of action proposed to inhibit 3-oxoacyl-acyl carrier protein synthase (ACP) III (FabH), resulting in the inhibition of fatty acid synthesis. It has been suggested that NsβL inhibits FabH indirectly by inactivating coenzyme-A (CoA). CoA is an essential cofactor for numerous proteins involved in glycolysis, the citric acid cycle (TCA), and pyruvate metabolism, in addition to fatty acid biosynthesis. This study aimed to determine the effects of NsβL on a diverse array of laboratory and clinical Staphylococcus aureus isolates by analyzing the mode of resistance in spontaneous and adaptive …

Inherent High Correlation Of Individual Motility Enhances Population Dispersal In A Heterotrophic, Planktonic Protist, Susanne Menden-Deuer Oct 2010

Inherent High Correlation Of Individual Motility Enhances Population Dispersal In A Heterotrophic, Planktonic Protist, Susanne Menden-Deuer

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Quantitative linkages between individual organism movements and the resulting population distributions are fundamental to understanding a wide range of ecological processes, including rates of reproduction, consumption, and mortality, as well as the spread of diseases and invasions. Typically, quantitative data are collected on either movement behaviors or population distributions, rarely both. This study combines empirical observations and model simulations to gain a mechanistic understanding and predictive ability of the linkages between both individual movement behaviors and population distributions of a single-celled planktonic herbivore. In the laboratory, microscopic 3D movements and macroscopic population distributions were simultaneously quantified in a 1L tank, …

Functional Cues For Position Learning Effects In Animals, Richard A. Burns, Kendra S. Johnson, Brian A. Harris, Beth A. Kinney, Sarah E. Wright Oct 2010

Functional Cues For Position Learning Effects In Animals, Richard A. Burns, Kendra S. Johnson, Brian A. Harris, Beth A. Kinney, Sarah E. Wright

The Psychological Record

Using transfer methodology, several possible factors that could have affected the expression of serial position learning were examined with runway-trained rats. A 3-trial series (8NP)-for which 8 and P refer to series trials when sucrose (8) and plain (P) Noyes pellets were used as a reward, and N refers to a trial without reward-was the basis for training in the first 2 and final experiments. Transfer tests in Experiment 1 altered reward memories, the time between trials in the series, or both. Tests in Experiment 2 altered the number of trials in the series while maintaining essential memory relationships. Experiment …

Four-Month-Old Infants' Categorization Of Animals: Does Any Body Part Hold Privileged Status?, Janice M. Vidic, Robert A. Haaf Oct 2010

Four-Month-Old Infants' Categorization Of Animals: Does Any Body Part Hold Privileged Status?, Janice M. Vidic, Robert A. Haaf

The Psychological Record

The influence of body parts on 4-month-olds' categorization of cats and dogs was examined using a visual preference procedure. Infants were familiarized with pictures of exemplars from one of two categories, cat or dog. In test, looking time to an out-ofcategory exemplar was compared to looking time to a novel withincategory exemplar with one changed body reg ion (face, head, torso). Results demonstrate the importance of the torso region in infants' categorization. Findings are discussed in terms of the relative influence of various body regions, depending on the conditions under which categorization occurs.

Sorghum And Pearl Millet Improved Seed Value Chains In Zambia: Challenges And Opportunities For Smallholder Farmers, Priscilla Hamukwala, Gelson Tembo, Don Larson, Mark Erbaugh Oct 2010

Sorghum And Pearl Millet Improved Seed Value Chains In Zambia: Challenges And Opportunities For Smallholder Farmers, Priscilla Hamukwala, Gelson Tembo, Don Larson, Mark Erbaugh

INTSORMIL Scientific Publications

Sorghum and millet are a very important source of food and farm income for smallholder farmers, which can be enhanced especially if linked to new markets. These two crops have been widely viewed as minor traditional crops in the Zambian food systems. The two crops were displaced by maize in the 1900s with the opening of the copper mines. However, they remain important food crops for semi-arid areas of the country. In recent years, there have also been new market developments requiring farmers to increase productivity and production. Unfortunately significant productivity enhancements are impeded by low access to improved technologies …

The Challenge Of Teaching Ethics In Technology, Barbara Rosenfeld Oct 2010

The Challenge Of Teaching Ethics In Technology, Barbara Rosenfeld

NERA Conference Proceedings 2010

This paper investigates some of the ethical issues related to being a good
digital citizen and keeping users safe in an online environment. Parents and
educators should teach their children about the dangers of cyberspace as
well as the beneficial aspects of being able to access many resources and
communicate with others. The trend toward using electronic communication
devices both in and out of the school environment is one that many
educators embrace, but key issues must be addressed to maintain both
physical safety and good mental health.

Developing Efficacy Beliefs In Preservice Teachers, Cheryl J. Gowie Oct 2010

Developing Efficacy Beliefs In Preservice Teachers, Cheryl J. Gowie

NERA Conference Proceedings 2010

The development of efficacy beliefs in undergraduate preservice secondary teachers was studied over a two-year period to determine whether certain instructional practices associated with mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, and emotional state support increased efficacy beliefs. Using The Teacher Efficacy Scale: Short Form (Woolfolk and Hoy, 1993), year 1 data were collected only at the conclusion an Educational Psychology course; year 2 data were collected at the beginning and end of the semester, allowing for investigation of change in beliefs. Instructional practices are examined as potential influences on the development of efficacy beliefs.
