Against Freedom Of Conscience, Richard J. Arneson Nov 2010

Against Freedom Of Conscience, Richard J. Arneson

San Diego Law Review

Is there a moral right to freedom of conscience? Should a legal right to freedom of conscience be established in each country on Earth? This essay argues for negative answers to both questions.

Theses On Secularism, Nomi Maya Stolzenberg Nov 2010

Theses On Secularism, Nomi Maya Stolzenberg

San Diego Law Review

Notwithstanding the notorious difficulty of defining religion and the consequent effort on the part of jurists and academics to avoid embracing any particular definition, one model of religion has dominated modern discourse: religion as conscience. Because of the dominance of this model, alternative views - which either subordinate the conscience to other supposedly more fundamental features of religion or dispense with the psychological apparatus of conscience altogether - have been largely submerged in modern political and legal discourse. Yet they will not remain suppressed. As a number of the conference papers have attest, alternatives and challenges to the dominant model …

Seasonal Variation And Synchronization Of Sexual Behaviors In Free-Ranging Male Tibetan Macaques (Macaca Thibetana) At Huangshan, China, Dong-Po Xia, Jin-Hua Li, Yong Zhu, Bing-Hua Sun, Lori K. Sheeran Oct 2010

Seasonal Variation And Synchronization Of Sexual Behaviors In Free-Ranging Male Tibetan Macaques (Macaca Thibetana) At Huangshan, China, Dong-Po Xia, Jin-Hua Li, Yong Zhu, Bing-Hua Sun, Lori K. Sheeran

Anthropology and Museum Studies Faculty Scholarship

Although seasonal breeding has been documented in many non-human primates, it is not clear whether sexual behaviors show seasonal variation among male individuals. To test this hypothesis, the focal animal sampling method and continuous recording were used to investigate seasonal variation and synchronization of sexual behaviors in five male Tibetan macaques (Macaca thibetana) at Mt. Huangshan from Oct 2005 to Sept 2006. Both copulatory and sexually motivated behaviors (i.e., sexual chase, grimace, and sexual-inspection), which were significantly higher in the mating season than non-mating season. Furthermore, seasonal variations of sexual behaviors, including copulatory and sexually motivated behaviors, were …

Gender And The Indonesian Pronouns, Hein Steinhauer Oct 2010

Gender And The Indonesian Pronouns, Hein Steinhauer

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The absence of a gender opposition in the Indonesian pronominal system requires special strategies in the translation from languages which do have such an opposition illustrated in the first part opf this article. In the second part the lexical and morphological means are discussed with which Indonesian expresses gender, culminating in a description of the use of perempuan and wanita, pria and laki-laki.

Lexicon And Word Formation In Indonesian Bajo, Chandra Nuraini Oct 2010

Lexicon And Word Formation In Indonesian Bajo, Chandra Nuraini

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper1 deals with the phonology and the lexicology of the Indonesian Bajo language and more specifically with the dialect or variant that can be heard all around the Flores Sea in Kangean, South-East Sulawesi, Sumbawa, and Flores. The phonological survey focuses on vowel lengthening, gemination, pre-nasalized phonemes, and sandhi. The second part of this paper proposes an insight into Bajo lexicology, restricted to nominal and verbal derivation.

Aspect And Modality In Indonesian; The Case Of "Sudah", "Telah", "Pernah", And "Sempat", Philippe Grangé Oct 2010

Aspect And Modality In Indonesian; The Case Of "Sudah", "Telah", "Pernah", And "Sempat", Philippe Grangé

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In this paper, I describe four Indonesian aspect markers, sudah, telah, pernah, and sempat, showing that the main opposition between them relies not only on their aspectual meanings, but also on the various modalities they express. The opposition between the very frequent markers sudah and telah is analysed in detail. The syntactic and semantic survey shows that these two markers are not synonyms in most contexts.

Neural Coding And Decoding, Alexander Dimitrov Oct 2010

Neural Coding And Decoding, Alexander Dimitrov

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Methods based on Rate Distortion theory have been successfully used to cluster stimuli and neural responses in order to study neural codes at a level of detail supported by the amount of available data. They approximate the joint stimulus-response distribution by quantizing paired stimulus-response observations into smaller reproductions of the stimulus and response spaces. An optimal quantization is found by maximizing an information-theoretic cost function subject to both equality and inequality constraints, in hundreds to thousands of dimensions. This analytical approach has several advantages over other current approaches:

  • it yields the most informative approximation of the encoding scheme given the …

System For Identifying Plankton From The Sipper Instrument Platform, Kurt A. Kramer Oct 2010

System For Identifying Plankton From The Sipper Instrument Platform, Kurt A. Kramer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Plankton imaging systems such as SIPPER produce a large quantity of data in the form of plankton images from a variety of classes. A system known as PICES was developed to quickly extract, classify and manage the millions of images produced from a single one-week research cruise. A new fast technique for parameter tuning and feature selection for Support Vector Machines using Wrappers was created. This technique allows for faster feature selection, while at the same time maintaining and sometimes improving classification accuracy. It also gives the user greater flexibility in the management of class contents in existing training libraries. …

Genome Dynamics Are Influenced By Food Source In Allogromia Laticollaris Strain Csh (Foraminifera), Laura Wegener Parfrey, Laura A. Katz Oct 2010

Genome Dynamics Are Influenced By Food Source In Allogromia Laticollaris Strain Csh (Foraminifera), Laura Wegener Parfrey, Laura A. Katz

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Across the eukaryotic tree of life, genomes vary within populations and within individuals during their life cycle. Understanding intraspecific genome variation in diverse eukaryotes is key to elucidating the factors that underlie this variation. Here, we characterize genome dynamics during the life cycle of Allogromia laticollaris strain CSH, a member of the Foraminifera, using fluorescence microscopy and reveal extensive variation in nuclear size and DNA content. Both nuclear size and DNA content are tightly correlated across a 700-fold range in cell volume. In contrast to models in yeast where nuclear size is determined solely by cell size, the relationship in …

Filtering Of Visual Information In The Tectum By An Identified Neural Circuit, Filippo Del Bene, Claire Wyart, Estuardo Robles, Amanda Tran, Loren Looger, Ethan K. Scott, Ehud Y. Isacoff, Herwig Baier Oct 2010

Filtering Of Visual Information In The Tectum By An Identified Neural Circuit, Filippo Del Bene, Claire Wyart, Estuardo Robles, Amanda Tran, Loren Looger, Ethan K. Scott, Ehud Y. Isacoff, Herwig Baier

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

The optic tectum of zebrafish is involved in behavioral responses that require the detection of small objects. The superficial layers of the tectal neuropil receive input from retinal axons, while its deeper layers convey the processed information to premotor areas. Imaging with a genetically encoded calcium indicator revealed that the deep layers, as well as the dendrites of single tectal neurons, are preferentially activated by small visual stimuli. This spatial filtering relies on GABAergic interneurons (using the neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid) that are located in the superficial input layer and respond only to large visual stimuli. Photo-ablation of these cells with …

Cyanidin-3-Glucoside Inhibits Ethanol-Induced Invasion Of Breast Cancer Cells Overexpressing Erbb2, Mei Xu, Kimberly A. Bower, Siying Wang, Jacqueline A. Frank, Gang Chen, Min Ding, Shiow Wang, Xianglin Shi, Zunji Ke, Jia Luo Oct 2010

Cyanidin-3-Glucoside Inhibits Ethanol-Induced Invasion Of Breast Cancer Cells Overexpressing Erbb2, Mei Xu, Kimberly A. Bower, Siying Wang, Jacqueline A. Frank, Gang Chen, Min Ding, Shiow Wang, Xianglin Shi, Zunji Ke, Jia Luo

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Ethanol is a tumor promoter. Both epidemiological and experimental studies suggest that ethanol may enhance the metastasis of breast cancer cells. We have previously demonstrated that ethanol increased the migration/invasion of breast cancer cells expressing high levels of ErbB2. Amplification of ErbB2 is found in 20-30% of breast cancer patients and is associated with poor prognosis. We sought to identify agents that can prevent or ameliorate ethanol-induced invasion of breast cancer cells. Cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G), an anthocyanin present in many vegetables and fruits, is a potent natural antioxidant. Ethanol exposure causes the accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). This …

Neural Activity Patterns In Response To Interspecific And Intraspecific Variation In Mating Calls In The Túngara Frog, Mukta Chakraborty, Lisa A. Mangiamele, Sabrina S. Burmeister Oct 2010

Neural Activity Patterns In Response To Interspecific And Intraspecific Variation In Mating Calls In The Túngara Frog, Mukta Chakraborty, Lisa A. Mangiamele, Sabrina S. Burmeister

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background: During mate choice, individuals must classify potential mates according to species identity and relative attractiveness. In many species, females do so by evaluating variation in the signals produced by males. Male túngara frogs (Physalaemus pustulosus) can produce single note calls (whines) and multi-note calls (whine-chucks). While the whine alone is sufficient for species recognition, females greatly prefer the whine-chuck when given a choice. Methodology/Principal Findings: To better understand how the brain responds to variation in male mating signals, we mapped neural activity patterns evoked by interspecific and intraspecific variation in mating calls in túngara frogs by measuring expression of …
