In the Breadth component of the KAM, I explore the question of why the U.S. education system throughout the history of the country has failed to provide students a quality education. An analysis of the views of Abraham Maslow, Jean Piaget, and John Dewey, and others who emphasized the importance and relevance of being able to learn and think critically, are reviewed. The ability to communicate what is learned for the betterment of the individual,l as well as society as a whole, is explored.
Alteration Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A (Vegfa) Isoform Expression Results In Abnormal Gonadal Function, Ningxia Lu
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In the female, vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) isoforms regulate follicle development and affect the initial primordial follicle pool. In male rodent testes, they are involved in the development of vasculature and seminiferous cords. The objective of the current study was to evaluate effects of Sertoli and Granulosa cellspecific production of VEGFA isoforms on vascular development and gonadal morphogenesis. We used a DMRT1-cre crossed to a floxed VEGFA mouse to determine potential phenotypes in male Sertoli-cell (VEGFA-DSertG) and female Granulosa-cell (VEGFA-DGranG) specific knockouts. In females, we found smaller ovarian weight, fewer corpus luteums (CLs) with some abnormal CL morphology, …

Characterization And Development Of A Stroke-Induced Model Of Acquired Epilepsy In Organotypic Hippocampal Slice Cultures: Role Of The Cannabinoid Cb1 Receptors In Modulation Of Neuronal Excitation And Inhibition, Julie Ziobro
Theses and Dissertations
Stroke is the most common cause of acquired epilepsy in persons 35 and older. The massive increase in extracellular glutamate during stroke causes a cascade of intracellular events that can lead to cell death or the molecular changes that initiate the development of epilepsy. In addition, many studies point to a modulatory role of the endocannabinoid system in controlling seizures. Animal models of stroke induced acquired epilepsy have been difficult to develop. Therefore, this dissertation was initiated to develop an organotypic hippocampal slice culture model of acquired epilepsy and examine the changes in distribution and function of the endogenous CB1 …
A Retrospective Analysis Of The Potential Environmental Stressors Responsible For The Decline Of The Natural Populations Of The Florida Apple Snail (Pomacea Paludosa) In The A.R.M. Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, Shannon Ladd
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to determine the factors that contributed to the decline of Florida apple snail (Pomacea paludosa) populations in the A.R.M. Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge with the goal of devising management recommendations to the Refuge regarding population management strategies. The factors examined that could have potentially contributed to population decline include the use of copper-based herbicides, insecticide application, the occurrence of drought, the use of other herbicides, the occurrence of fire, and non-avian predation. Annual Narrative documents produced by Refuge managers and staff members, dated from 1951 to 2007, were used to collect historical data for …

The Evolution Of A Coding Schema In A Paced Program Of Research, Charlene A. Winters, Shirley Curney, Therese Sullivan
The Qualitative Report
A major task involved in the management, analysis, and integration of qualitative data is the development of a coding schema to facilitate the analytic process. Described in this paper is the evolution of a coding schema that was used in the analysis of qualitative data generated from online forums of middle-aged women with chronic conditions who participated in a computer support intervention in the rural west. The coding schema evolved over three phases of the research project and included coding tree nodes based on study-driven categories and nodes that arose from the data and changes in conceptual thinking. This paper …

"A Considerable Surgical Operation": Article Iii, Equity, And Judge-Made Law In The Federal Courts, Kristin Collins
Faculty Scholarship
This Article examines the history of judge-made law in the federal courts through the lens of the early-nineteenth-century federal courts’ equity powers. In a series of equity cases, and in the Federal Equity Rules promulgated by the Court in 1822 and 1842, the Supreme Court vehemently insisted that lower federal courts employ a uniform corpus of nonstate equity principles with respect to procedure, remedies, and - in certain instances - primary rights and liabilities. Careful attention to the historical sources suggests that the uniform equity doctrine was not simply the product of an overreaching, consolidationist Supreme Court, but is best …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
A stock–recruitment model with a temperature component was used to estimate the effect of an increase in temperature predicted by climate change projections on population persistence and distribution of twaite shad Alosa fallax. An increase of 1 and 2° C above the current mean summer (June to August) water temperature of 17·8° C was estimated to result in a three and six-fold increase in the population, respectively. Climate change is also predicted to result in an earlier commencement to their spawning migration into fresh water. The model was expanded to investigate the effect of any additional mortality that might arise …
Reduction Of The Misinformation Effect By Arousal Induced After Learning, Shaun English, Kristy A. Nielson
Reduction Of The Misinformation Effect By Arousal Induced After Learning, Shaun English, Kristy A. Nielson
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Misinformation introduced after events have already occurred causes errors in later retrieval. Based on literature showing that arousal induced after learning enhances delayed retrieval, we investigated whether post-learning arousal can reduce the misinformation effect. 251 participants viewed four short film clips, each followed by a retention test, which for some participants included misinformation. Afterward, participants viewed another film clip that was either arousing or neutral. One week later, the arousal group recognized significantly more veridical details and endorsed significantly fewer misinformation items than the neutral group. The findings suggest that arousal induced after learning reduced source confusion, allowing participants to …

An Implementation Of Natural Language User Interface In Smart Home System., Ngoi Se Keng
Student Works (2010-2019)
Smart Home System has facilitated the control of home appliances through computer system. However, the physical interactions between the user and existing graphical user interface such as pointing and clicking button could be a challenge to elderly, whom are generally having vision and motor impairment. This project specifically focuses on the development of a user interface that does not require physical interaction. In this regard, a prototype smart home system namely Natural Language Instruction Driven System (NLIDS) that employed natural language (speech) based user interface has been developed. The prototype system consists of three modules, which are Input & Response …
Model Checking A Model Checker: A Code Contract Combined Approach, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Bin Cheng
Model Checking A Model Checker: A Code Contract Combined Approach, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Bin Cheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Model checkers, like any complex software, are subject to bugs. Unlike ordinary software, model checkers are often used to verify safety critical systems. Their correctness is thus vital. Verifying model checkers is extremely challenging because they are always complicated in logic and highly optimized. In this work, we propose a code contract combined approach for checking model checkers and apply it to a home-grown model checker PAT. In this approach, we firstly embed programming contracts (i.e., pre/post-conditions and invariants) into its source code, which can capture correctness of model checking algorithms, underlying data structures, consistency between different model checking parameters, …

Identification And Characterization Of Salmonella Serotypes Isolated From Pork And Poultry From Commercial Sources, Yulie Edith Meneses-GonzáLez
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Salmonella is one of the leading causes of foodborne illness worldwide, and it is estimated that 1.4 million infections occur annually in the U.S. alone. The Premi®Test Salmonella (PTS), is a potential tool for rapid detection and identification of Salmonella serovars. The objective of this project was to evaluate the use of the PTS system as a serotyping tool to identify pork and poultry isolates obtained from vertically integrated operations and to characterize their antibiotic resistance. Two hundred isolates were evaluated. All isolates were serotyped using the traditional Kaufmann-White scheme and the PTS system. Among the isolates 63 different serotypes …

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
MS4a4B, a CD20 homologue in T cells, is a novel member of the MS4A gene family in mice. The MS4A family includes CD20, FcεRIβ, HTm4 and at least 26 novel members that are characterized by their structural features: with four membrane-spanning domains, two extracellular domains and two cytoplasmic regions. CD20, FcεRIβ and HTm4 have been found to function in B cells, mast cells and hematopoietic cells respectively. However, little is known about the function of MS4a4B in T cell regulation. We demonstrate here that MS4a4B negatively regulates mouse T cell proliferation. MS4a4B is highly expressed in primary T cells, natural …

Rats pre-exposed to 85% O2 for 5–7 days tolerate the otherwise lethal effects of 100% O2. The objective was to evaluate the effect of rat exposure to 85% O2 for 7 days on lung capillary mean transit time (t¯c) and distribution of capillary transit times (h c(t)). This information is important for subsequent evaluation of the effect of this hyperoxia model on the redox metabolic functions of the pulmonary capillary endothelium. The venous concentration vs. time outflow curves of fluorescein isothiocyanate labeled dextran (FITC-dex), an intravascular indicator, and coenzyme Q1 hydroquinone …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
A new process called Forcespinning™ has been developed to make nanofibers from a wide range of materials. This new method uses centrifugal force, rather than electrostatic force as in the electrospinning process. The Forcespinning™ method uses either solutions or solid materials that are solution or melt spun into nanofibers. Key parameters to control the geometry and morphology of the nanofibers include rotational speed of the spinneret, collection system and temperature. Orifices of the spinneret can have arbitrary geometric shapes to provide corresponding cross-section of nanofibers. The Forcespinning™ method has been successfully used to make nanofibers of poly-ethylene …
Form Perception: An Interactive Guide To The Gestalt Principles, Hend Alawadhi
Form Perception: An Interactive Guide To The Gestalt Principles, Hend Alawadhi
Theses
The term Gestalt literally means "form" in German. In the early 20th century, the Gestalt Principles of Perception were developed by German psychologists from the Berlin School. These principles describe the different ways the human mind organizes visual elements into groups or unified wholes. The definition of Gestalt in relation to these principles is "unified whole." This thesis is an endeavor to examine the five major principles of Gestalt perception through the use of short animations and illustrated examples, presented in a website. It will also allow the user to test the knowledge provided through a short multiple-choice quiz and …

A powerful convergence of genetics, neuroimaging and epidemiological research has identified biological pathways mediating individual differences in complex behavioral processes and related risk for disease. Orthologous genetic variation in non-human primates represents a unique opportunity to characterize the detailed molecular and cellular mechanisms which bias behaviorally- and clinically-relevant brain function. We report that a rhesus macaque orthologue of a common polymorphism of the serotonin transporter gene (rh5-HTTLPR) has strikingly similar effects on behavior and brain morphology to those in humans. Specifically, the rh5- HTTLPR Short allele broadly impacts cognitive choice behavior and brain morphology without observably affecting 5-HT transporter or …

Association Between The Squat Lobster Gastroptychus Formosus And Cold-Water Corals In The North Atlantic, Guilloux E Le, J. M. Hall-Spencer, M. K. Söffker, K. Olu
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Although there are no previous descriptions of the habits of chirostylids in the North Atlantic, it is likely that species in the genera Uroptychus, Eumunida and Gastroptychus have close ecological ties with deep-sea corals since they have all been recorded in trawl samples containing corals from ∼200m depth. We analysed in situ distribution of Gastroptychus formosus and potential hosts using a ROV at a range of north-eastern Atlantic sites and found that this species forms a close association with deep-sea corals that resembles the chirostylid-anthozoan associations reported in shallow Indo-Pacific waters. We update the known distribution for G. formosus, confirming …

Articles
The condensation of substituted aromatic aldehydes with 7-amino-4-methyl-quinolin-2(1H)-one (1) has lead to the isolation of quinolin-2(1H)-one derived Schiff bases (2–14). The copper(II) complexes (2a–14a) of the ligands were also prepared, and together with their corresponding free ligands were fully characterised by elemental analyses, spectral methods (IR, 1H and 13C NMR, AAS, UV–Vis), magnetic and conductance measurements. The bidentate ligands coordinated to the copper(II) ion through the deprotonated phenolic oxygen and the azomethine nitrogen of the ligands in almost all cases. X-ray crystal structures of two of the complexes, 5a and 8a, confirmed the bidentate …
How Shall I Praise Thee? Brian Leiter On Respect For Religion, Andrew Koppelman
How Shall I Praise Thee? Brian Leiter On Respect For Religion, Andrew Koppelman
San Diego Law Review
In two recent papers, Brian Leiter argues that there is no good reason for law to single out religion for special treatment and religion is not an apt candidate for respect in the "thick" sense of being an object of favorable appraisal. Special treatment would be appropriate only if there were some "moral reason why states should carve out special protections that encourage individuals to structure their lives around categorical demands that are insulated from the standards of evidence and reasoning we everywhere else expect to constitute constraints on judgment and action." Favorable appraisal would be called for "[o]nly if …

Andrew Koppelman has offered a challenge to Brian Leiter's view that the proper public attitude toward religion is one of tolerance rather than active respect. Let us explore the nature of that challenge and offer a few observations on the topic.
From Religious Freedom To Moral Freedom, Michael J. Perry
From Religious Freedom To Moral Freedom, Michael J. Perry
San Diego Law Review
The right to moral freedom is not only analogous to the right to religious freedom. The right to moral freedom, as I explain in this essay, represents a broadening of the right to religious freedom - a broadening that for many of us is compelling.
