Subcaste Composition In Responses To Alarm And Non-Alarm Pheromones On Foraging Trails Of Leaf-Cutter Ant Atta Cephalotes (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), November 2010, Michael Marquis Nov 2010

Subcaste Composition In Responses To Alarm And Non-Alarm Pheromones On Foraging Trails Of Leaf-Cutter Ant Atta Cephalotes (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), November 2010, Michael Marquis

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The response of the leaf-cutting ant Atta cephalotes to its alarm pheromones from crushed heads were compared to its response to crushed bodies without heads in order to examine the relative subcaste (minor and forager) composition of the responding individuals. The percentage of minor workers responding to the body parts near the foraging trail were recorded and compared with the experimentally determined percentage of minors in the trail traffic. The average percentage of minors in the ants responding to the two treatments (Heads: 44.9±0.72%, Bodies: 38.8±0.77%, N = 1300) both differed (p = .0007, p = .0113, df = 1) …

Pit-Trap Construction Decisions By Wormlions (Diptera Vermileonidae) Effects Of Substrate Moisture And Larval Density, November 2010, James H. Muldoon Nov 2010

Pit-Trap Construction Decisions By Wormlions (Diptera Vermileonidae) Effects Of Substrate Moisture And Larval Density, November 2010, James H. Muldoon

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

During their sessile larval stage, wormlions (Diptera vermileonidae) provide a unique insight into the importance of habitat selection because their local conditions greatly influence their growth and survivorship. Like their ecological relatives, antlions (Neuroptera myrmeleontidae), wormlion larvae are a sit-and-wait predators that construct conical pits to capture their prey. In this study, I demonstrate effects of moisture on larval pit-trap construction to explain the presence of and potential problems with wormlion aggregations. I found that larvae prefer drier soil conditions, for pit presence and size was negatively affected by large amounts of water. Results suggest larvae lack the strength to …

Effects Of Hurricane Katrina On Freshwater Fish Assemblages In A Small Coastal Tributary Of Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, Martin O'Connell Nov 2010

Effects Of Hurricane Katrina On Freshwater Fish Assemblages In A Small Coastal Tributary Of Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, Martin O'Connell

Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

Hurricane Katrina struck southeastern Louisiana on 29 August 2005 and thereby created an opportunity to examine the effects of a catastrophic storm on fish assemblages in a coastal stream. Bayou Lacombe is a small (46.1 river kilometers), primarily freshwater stream that drains into the northeastern portion of Lake Pontchartrain, a large oligohaline estuary located north of New Orleans. In summer 2005 (prior to the hurricane), three upstream and three downstream reaches of Bayou Lacombe were surveyed by electrofishing. These same six reaches were resurveyed in the summer of 2006 to assess the effects of the hurricane on fish assemblages. There …

Nutrient Transport In Runoff As Affected By Diet, Tillage, And Manure Application Rate, John E. Gilley, Lisa M. Durso, R.A. Eigenberg, David B. Marx, Brian L. Woodbury Nov 2010

Nutrient Transport In Runoff As Affected By Diet, Tillage, And Manure Application Rate, John E. Gilley, Lisa M. Durso, R.A. Eigenberg, David B. Marx, Brian L. Woodbury

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Feedlot operators may increase profitability by including distillers grains in finishing diets. However, the nutrients remaining in the by‐product are concentrated by about a factor of three during the distillation process. Manure can be applied to meet single‐ or multiple‐year crop nutrient requirements. The water quality effects of the use of distillers grains in feedlot diets and multiple‐year manure application have not been well quantified. The objectives of this study were to (1) compare the runoff water quality effects resulting from the application of manure derived from corn and distillers grain diets, (2) examine the effects of till and no‐till …

Comparison Of Subsurface And Surface Runoff Phosphorus Transport Capacities In Alluvial Floodplains, Aaron R. Mittelstet, Derek M. Heeren, Daniel E. Storm, Garey A. Fox, M. J. White, R. B. Miller Nov 2010

Comparison Of Subsurface And Surface Runoff Phosphorus Transport Capacities In Alluvial Floodplains, Aaron R. Mittelstet, Derek M. Heeren, Daniel E. Storm, Garey A. Fox, M. J. White, R. B. Miller

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

There have been numerous studies on phosphorus (P) contributions from surface runoff, but studies comparing the contribution of surface versus subsurface P are limited, as subsurface transport is often considered negligible. Previous work has shown that the transport of P in the gravelly subsurface at two sites in northeast Oklahoma can be significant, especially in preferential flow paths (PFPs), hypothesized to be buried gravel bars. The objective of this project was to quantify subsurface P losses based on field data, and compare with surface runoff P losses derived from Pasture Phosphorus Management Calculator (PPM Plus) simulations. Ozark ecoregion study sites …

Structure And Reactivity Of Hexacoordinate Hemoglobins, Smita Kakar, Federico G. Hoffmann, Jay F. Storz, Marian Fabian, Mark S. Hargrove Nov 2010

Structure And Reactivity Of Hexacoordinate Hemoglobins, Smita Kakar, Federico G. Hoffmann, Jay F. Storz, Marian Fabian, Mark S. Hargrove

Jay F. Storz Publications

The heme prosthetic group in hemoglobins is most often attached to the globin through coordination of either one or two histidine side chains. Those proteins with one histidine coordinating the heme iron are called “pentacoordinate” hemoglobins, a group represented by red blood cell hemoglobin and most other oxygen transporters. Those with two histidines are called “hexacoordinate hemoglobins”, which have broad representation among eukaryotes. Coordination of the second histidine in hexacoordinate Hbs is reversible, allowing for binding of exogenous ligands like oxygen, carbon monoxide, and nitric oxide. Research over the past several years has produced a fairly detailed picture of the …

Communal Breeding: Clever Defense Against Cheats, Bruce E. Lyon, Daizaburo Shizuka Nov 2010

Communal Breeding: Clever Defense Against Cheats, Bruce E. Lyon, Daizaburo Shizuka

Papers in Ornithology

High levels of conspecific brood parasitism are found in a communally breeding bird, with implications for the evolutionary links between brood parasitism and communal breeding. It also uncovers a novel egg recognition mechanism hosts use to foil brood parasites.

Avian breeding systems often reflect a mix of cooperation and conflict over allocation of the costs and benefits of parental care [1–4]. This interesting juxtaposition of cooperation and conflict is particularly evident in the communally breeding birds, where two or more females lay eggs in the same nest and typically cooperate to raise the offspring. Beneath the veneer of group cooperation …

Fluoride-Promoted Ligand Exchange In Diaryliodonium Salts, Bijia Wang, Ronald Cerny, Shriharsha Uppaluri, Jayson J. Kempinger, Stephen G. Dimagno Nov 2010

Fluoride-Promoted Ligand Exchange In Diaryliodonium Salts, Bijia Wang, Ronald Cerny, Shriharsha Uppaluri, Jayson J. Kempinger, Stephen G. Dimagno

Stephen DiMagno Papers

Diaryliodonium salts are shown to undergo rapid, fluoride-promoted aryl exchange reactions at room temperature in acetonitrile. Aryl exchange is shown to be exquisitely sensitive to the concentration of fluoride ion in solution; fast exchange is observed as the fluoride concentration approaches a stoichiometric amount at 50 mM substrate concentration. The reaction is slowed, but not halted if benzene is the solvent, indicating that free fluoride ion or a four-coordinate anionic I(III) species may be responsible for the exchange. The fluoride-promoted aryl exchange reaction is general and allows direct measurement of the relative stabilities of diaryliodonium salts featuring different aryl substituents. …

Autonomous Robot Patrolling Of A Sparsely Populated Unknown Environment, Patrick Larocque Nov 2010

Autonomous Robot Patrolling Of A Sparsely Populated Unknown Environment, Patrick Larocque

Theses

The increasing availability and affordability of autonomous robots has expanded their uses for many new applications, such as exploration, surveillance and threat containment. Most research considers a team of a large number of robots that contain global information. This work explores distributed and low overhead algorithms for patrolling and threat containment within a region sparsely populated with few robots. The robots patrol the area without the global knowledge of the region, but each is equipped with an omni-directional range finder and a positioning system for keeping track of its location and metering distance and directions of events. This study presents …

Cyclin E is often overexpressed in cancer tissue, leading to genetic instability and aneuploidy. Cullin 3 (Cul3) is a component of the BTB-Cul3-Rbx1 (BCR) ubiquitin ligase that is involved in the turnover of cyclin E. Here we show that liver-specific ablation of Cul3 in mice results in the persistence and massive expansion of hepatic progenitor cells. Upon induction of differentiation, Cul3-deficient progenitor cells underwent substantial DNA damage in vivo and in vitro, thereby triggering the activation of a cellular senescence response that selectively blocked the expansion of the differentiated offspring. Positive selection of undifferentiated progenitor cells required the expression of …

Accumulation, Excess, Childhood: Toward A Countertopography Of Risk And Waste, Cindi Katz Nov 2010

Accumulation, Excess, Childhood: Toward A Countertopography Of Risk And Waste, Cindi Katz

Publications and Research

This piece grows out of my on-going project, ‘Childhood as Spectacle’, and my enduring concern with social reproduction and what it does for and to Marxist and other critical political-economic analyses. After more than 30 years of Marxist-feminist interventions around these issues, symptomatic silences around social reproduction remain all too common in analyses of capitalism. Working through these issues and their occlusion, I offer what I hope is a useful and vibrant theoretical framework for examining geographies of children, youth, and families. Building this framework calls into play three overlapping issues; neoliberal capitalism in crisis and David Harvey’s notion of …

Strategic Recovery Requires Leadership, Christine G. Springer Nov 2010

Strategic Recovery Requires Leadership, Christine G. Springer

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

As public managers work toward a successful recovery post-midyear elections, we all must deal with system-wide problems arising from the recession. This requires first recognizing that the crisis continues and must be addressed not just by increasing revenue but by fixing system-wide structural and operational issues.

To do so involves developing the skills required in a recovery, identifying the causes of the crisis so that future crises can be better managed and concentrating on the key areas of leadership expertise needed to effectively communicate and deliver better outcomes.

Ecological Effects Of Virus-Resistant Transgenic Squash, Holly R. Prendeville Nov 2010

Ecological Effects Of Virus-Resistant Transgenic Squash, Holly R. Prendeville

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Two ecological risks associated with the use of transgenic crops include the effects of transgene products on non-target organisms and the effects of a transgene after it moves from crops into a wild plant population. In work presented here, we specifically investigate the ecological risks of virus-resistant transgenic squash. We observed pollinator behavior to determine if pollinators are affected by nontarget effects of the virus-resistant transgene. We found that pollinator behavior did differ between conventional and virus-resistant transgenic squash due to pleiotropic effects of the transgene. This difference in pollinator behavior can affect plant mating patterns, thereby affecting crop-wild hybridization …

Changing The Sentence Without Hiding The Truth: Judicial Sentence Modification As A Promising Method Of Early Release, Cecelia Klingele

William & Mary Law Review

Last year, as the State of California struggled with a $42 billion budget deficit, its financial inability to correct constitutionally deficient prison conditions led a federal court to order the release of 40,000 state prisoners. In Oregon, Michigan, Connecticut, Vermont, and Delaware, spending on corrections now exceeds spending on higher education. Across the nation, more than one of every one hundred Americans is behind bars. When the financial crisis of 2008 dealt its blow, state correctional budgets were already nearing a breaking point. Now, in the wake of unprecedented budget shortfalls, state governments have been forced to confront a difficult …

The Braincase Of Youngina Capensis (Reptilia, Diapsida): New Insights From High-Resolution Ct Scanning Of The Holotype, Nicholas M. Gardner, Casey M. Holliday, F. Robin O’Keefe

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Detailed descriptions of braincase anatomy in early diapsid reptiles have been historically rare given the difficulty of accessing this deep portion of the skull, because of poor preservation of the fossils or the inability to remove the surrounding skull roof. Previous descriptions of the braincase of Youngina capensis, a derived stem-diapsid reptile from the Late Permian (250 MYA) of South Africa, have relied on only partially preserved fossils. High resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) scanning, a new advance in biomedical sciences, has allowed us to examine the reasonably complete braincase of the holotype specimen of Youngina capensis for the …
