Metamorphosis, Amber Nicole Heard Dec 2010

Metamorphosis, Amber Nicole Heard

Student Theses and Dissertations

These works are a reminder of the steps that brought us to where we are now and what we may become. They portray the emotional transformation of an individual as they mature with age as well as life experience, illustrating how beautiful and frightening this process can be. The works function similarly to inkblot tests, where the viewer's psyche makes them see what they want to see. These images evoke memories of personal events that are meant to cause the viewer to have a nostalgic emotional experience.

Preliminary Analysis Of Themally Induced Condensed Phase Electron Transfer Reactions Of Zinc Chloride, Chromium Chloride And Lead Chloride With Electropositive Metals., Manasa Anumula

Student Theses and Dissertations

The thermal stabilities and thermal decomposition at elevated temperatures for the metal halides zinc chloride, chromium chloride and lead chloride with electropositive metals were studied. The reaction of zinc chloride with Mn is conducted in both Cu and alumina pans. It was postulated that zinc chloride might be reacting with Cu in Cu pan. The reaction between zinc chloride and Mn is also observed. The reactions of chromium chloride and chromium chloride hexahydrate with Zn and Mn are conducted in Cu pans. The obtained TG/DTA plots showed reactions in all the cases. The reactions with chromium chloride hexahydrate are observed …

Large Scale Application Of Vibration Sensors For Fan Monitoring At Commercial Layer Hen Houses, Ji-Qin Ni, Yan Chen, Claude A. Diehl, Albert J. Heber, Bill W. Bogan, Li-Long Chai

School of Agricultural & Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Continuously monitoring the operation of each individual fan can significantly improve the measurement quality of aerial pollutant emissions from animal buildings that have a large number of fans. To monitor the fan operation by detecting the fan vibration is a relatively new technique. A low-cost electronic vibration sensor was developed and commercialized. However, its large scale application has not yet been evaluated. This paper presents long-term performance results of this vibration sensor at two large commercial layer houses. Vibration sensors were installed on 164 fans of 130 cm diameter to continuously monitor the fan on/off status for two years. The …

Capture And Access Of Multiple Screen Presentations, Kelv H. Cutler Dec 2010

Capture And Access Of Multiple Screen Presentations, Kelv H. Cutler

Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge transferred during meetings is often ephemeral in nature and thus must be captured if it is to be retained. Ideally, a capture solution should be able to 1) accommodate any number of screens without sacrificing image quality and 2) allow dynamic access to a complete media capture while the capture is taking place. Both students and employees can benefit from the information captured during the lectures and meetings for enhanced discussion and afterward for knowledge retention. Current systems do not support multiple screen capture well, and no system supports dynamic access to the active meeting capture during the meeting. …

Gender And Color Specific Differences In Event Related Potentials, Abhishek Trikha Dec 2010

Gender And Color Specific Differences In Event Related Potentials, Abhishek Trikha

Theses and Dissertations

This project analyzed gender and color-specific differences in event-related potentials (ERPs). Previous studies have shown that males process color differently than females. In a recent study, sex differences were found in ERPs during a visual object recognition task. There were higher EEG amplitudes in females (especially P300) than males. Significant sex and color-specific differences have been found in diseases involving altered dopamine (DA) machinery. Thus, we analyzed differences between ERPs in males vs females during a color task. We also compared the color-specific differences in ERPs between males and females. Males and females participated in EEG recording sessions for 2 …

In Case You Missed It: Chop Suey, Maura Elizabeth Cunningham Dec 2010

In Case You Missed It: Chop Suey, Maura Elizabeth Cunningham

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

In 1961, Julia Child published Mastering the Art of French Cooking, among the most celebrated cookbooks of the 20th century. Designed to demystify the intricacies of French cuisine and convince the “servantless American cook” that she could conquer any of the recipes contained therein, Child’s book helped to bring French food out of upscale city restaurants and into the kitchens of families across the country.

Sixteen years earlier, Buwei Yang Chao had taken on a similar task, though she met with much less widespread success than Child would. Chao’s How to Cook and Eat in Chinese (1945) did not only …

Motile Cryptofauna Of An Eastern Pacific Coral Reef: Biodiversity And Trophic Contribution, Ian C. Enochs Dec 2010

Motile Cryptofauna Of An Eastern Pacific Coral Reef: Biodiversity And Trophic Contribution, Ian C. Enochs

Open Access Dissertations

Coral reef cryptofauna (coelobites) are metazoans that occupy the hidden recesses formed by structural taxa such as corals. While cryptic communities are thought to account for the majority of reef biodiversity and play important roles in reef trophodynamics, little empirical evidence exists supporting these claims. Quantitative sampling of coelobites has been thus far limited due to highly heterogeneous reef topographies as well as difficulties associated with identification of large numbers of species. In the eastern Pacific, monogeneric stands of Pocillopora form reef structures that are homogeneous across a horizontal plane and support a relatively depauperate fauna, thereby permitting detailed multispecies …

Dynamical Grouping In Complex Systems, Zhenyuan Zhao Dec 2010

Dynamical Grouping In Complex Systems, Zhenyuan Zhao

Open Access Dissertations

Quantifying the behavior of complex systems arguably presents the common ¡°hard¡±problem across the physical, biological, social, economic sciences. Individual-based or agent-based models have proved useful in a variety of different real world systems: from the physical, biological, medical domains through to social and even financial domains. There are many different models in each of these fields, each with their own particular assumptions, strengths and weaknesses for particular application areas. However, there is a lack of minimal model analysis in which both numerical and analytic results can be obtained, and hence allowing different application domains to be analyzed on a common …

Mate Choice In A Sexually Dimorphic Marine Bird, The Great Frigatebird (Fregata Minor), Frans A. Juola Dec 2010

Mate Choice In A Sexually Dimorphic Marine Bird, The Great Frigatebird (Fregata Minor), Frans A. Juola

Open Access Dissertations

Darwin's theory of sexual selection explains the existence of sexual dimorphism, or within-species sex differences in shape, color, size, and behavior. In some cases, sexually dimorphic traits, especially extravagant male ornaments, seem maladaptive and thus in opposition to natural selection. The crux of Darwin's theory was that sexual selection arises from individual differences in reproductive success that result from competition for mates. In this dissertation, I investigated several aspects of sexual selection and the evolution of female mating preferences and male ornaments in the great frigatebird (Fregata minor). Frigatebirds as a group (family Fregatidae) are the most ornamented of any …

The Roles Of Nitric Oxide Signaling And Camp Response Element Binding Protein In Fear Conditioning, Jonathan Burke Kelley Dec 2010

The Roles Of Nitric Oxide Signaling And Camp Response Element Binding Protein In Fear Conditioning, Jonathan Burke Kelley

Open Access Dissertations

Pavlovian fear conditioning has face validity for acquired anxiety disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and specific phobias. Memory formation mediated by synaptic plasticity, including long-term potentiation (LTP), underlies fear conditioning. The established roles of nitric oxide (NO) signaling in synaptic plasticity and LTP suggest that NO signaling may be critical for fear conditioning. Therefore, my research objectives were to investigate the roles of NO signaling in the acquisition and consolidation of fear memory following fear conditioning. I hypothesized that genetic and pharmacological inhibitions of NO signaling will impair fear conditioning, and that pharmacological facilitation of NO signaling will …

Intrinsic And Extrinsic Factors For The Regeneration Of Brainstem Axons After Spinal Cord Injury, Ryan R. Williams Dec 2010

Intrinsic And Extrinsic Factors For The Regeneration Of Brainstem Axons After Spinal Cord Injury, Ryan R. Williams

Open Access Dissertations

After traumatic injury, the successful regeneration of axons in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS) that leads to functional recovery will require a combination of therapeutic strategies. Following complete transection of the thoracic spinal cord, previous studies found the implantation of a bridge containing Schwann cells (SCs) and Matrigel promotes intraspinal but not supraspinal axon regeneration. Therefore, work in this dissertation sought to elucidate both intrinsic and extrinsic factors that enhance the regeneration of brainstem axons in a SC bridge. Adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector-mediated expression of green fluorescent protein (GFP) was utilized as a novel method for anterogradely tracing the …

Development Of A Methodology To Attain High Levels Of Storage Proteins In Cassava Tuberized Roots And Its Implications, Mohammad Abhary

Dissertations

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz.) is a member of the Euphorbiaceae family, cultivated in the tropics and subtropical areas as a staple food crop for more than 700 million people around the world. The starchy storage roots of cassava are rich in calories and deficient in all other nutrients, cassava meals has the lowest of all sources of dietary protein. Severe protein deficiencies and malnutrition problems are common among those who rely on cassava as their daily meal. Although cassava is ranked the fifth most important crop in the world, the research on this crop is very limited. Among the limited …

Representation And Validation Of Domain And Range Restrictions In A Relational Database-Driven Ontology Maintenance System, Patrick G. Edgett, Leong Lee, Jennifer L. Leopold, Alton B. Coalter

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

An ontology can be used to represent and organize the objects, properties, events, processes, and relations that embody an area of reality [1]. These knowledge bases may be created manually (by individuals or groups), and/or automatically using software tools, such as those developed for information retrieval and data mining. Recently the National Science Foundation funded a large collaborative development project for the semi-automated construction of an ontology of amphibian anatomy (AmphibAnat [2]). to satisfy the extensive community curation requirements of that project, a generic, Web-Based, multi-user, relational database ontology management system (RDBOM [3]) was constructed, based upon a novel theoretical …

Golgi Cells Operate As State-Specific Temporal Filters At The Input Stage Of The Cerebellar Cortex, Shane A. Heine, Stephen M. Highstein, Pablo M. Blazquez Dec 2010

Golgi Cells Operate As State-Specific Temporal Filters At The Input Stage Of The Cerebellar Cortex, Shane A. Heine, Stephen M. Highstein, Pablo M. Blazquez

Open Access Publications

Cerebellar processing of incoming information begins at the synapse between mossy fibers and granule cells, a synapse that is strongly controlled through Golgi cell inhibition. Thus, Golgi cells are uniquely positioned to control the flow of information into the cerebellar cortex and understanding their responses during behavior is essential to understanding cerebellar function. Here we show, for the first time, that Golgi cells express a unique oculomotor-related signal that can be used to provide state- and time-specific filtering of granule cell activity. We used newly established criteria to identify the unique electrophysiological signature of Golgi cells and recorded these neurons …

Incorporating Feedback From Multiple Sensory Modalities Enhances Brain–Machine Interface Control, Aaron J. Suminski, Dennis C. Tkach, Andrew H. Fagg, Nicholas G. Hatsopoulos Dec 2010

Incorporating Feedback From Multiple Sensory Modalities Enhances Brain–Machine Interface Control, Aaron J. Suminski, Dennis C. Tkach, Andrew H. Fagg, Nicholas G. Hatsopoulos

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The brain typically uses a rich supply of feedback from multiple sensory modalities to control movement in healthy individuals. In many individuals, these afferent pathways, as well as their efferent counterparts, are compromised by disease or injury resulting in significant impairments and reduced quality of life. Brain–machine interfaces (BMIs) offer the promise of recovered functionality to these individuals by allowing them to control a device using their thoughts. Most current BMI implementations use visual feedback for closed-loop control; however, it has been suggested that the inclusion of additional feedback modalities may lead to improvements in control. We demonstrate for the …

The Effect Of Passive Stretching And Isometric Contractions On Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness After A Typical Bout Of Exercise, John W. Gibson Dec 2010

The Effect Of Passive Stretching And Isometric Contractions On Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness After A Typical Bout Of Exercise, John W. Gibson

Theses and Dissertations

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is a common response to activities involving lengthening contractions. Muscle inflammation is associated with DOMS and may play an integral role in protecting a muscle from damage and soreness in response to subsequent bouts of lengthening contractions. Research in animals has shown that prior exposure to passive stretching and isometric contractions of a muscle resulting in muscle inflammation attenuates the muscle inflammatory response following subsequent bouts of lengthening contractions. The purpose of this study was to determine whether passive stretching and isometric contractions in humans would reduce DOMS following a typical bout of resistance exercise. …
