Systemic And Microcirculatory Effects Of Hboc-201: A Hemoglobin-Based Oxygen Carrier, Bjorn Song Dec 2010

Systemic And Microcirculatory Effects Of Hboc-201: A Hemoglobin-Based Oxygen Carrier, Bjorn Song

Theses and Dissertations

Top-loading This study compared the effects on oxygen (O2) transport of four fluids: 5.9% human serum albumin (HSA) a non-O2 carrying iso-oncotic solution (volume control);HBOC-201 (Hemopure, Biopure Corp., Cambridge, MA); MP50, HBOC-201 with a P50 of 18 mmHg; and lastly LP50, an HBOC-201 with P50 of 17 mmHg and higher viscosity (4 cP). It has been proposed that HBOC with a higher O2 affinity and a viscosity closer to that of whole blood will cause less vasoconstriction and thus a lower MAP than Hemopure (P50 = 40 mmHg and 2.2 cP). Intravital microscopic measurements were made on the spinotrapezius muscle …

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A grazing study was conducted at the University of Nebraska Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory from mid-June to late-August across two years (2009 and 2010) to evaluate the effects of supplementation with mixtures of wet distillers grains (WDGS) and straw or hay on grazed forage intake. Twenty 1 ha paddocks replicated over two blocks were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: Control (CON) at the recommended stocking rate (1.68 AUM/ha in 2009 and 1.64 AUM/ha in 2010), and three double stocked treatments supplemented with 60% straw and 40% WDGS (STRAW), 60% hay and 40% WDGS (LOW), and 70% hay and 30% …

Nunivak Island Subsistence Cod, Red Salmon And Grayling Fisheries – Past And Present, Robert M. Drozda Dec 2010

Nunivak Island Subsistence Cod, Red Salmon And Grayling Fisheries – Past And Present, Robert M. Drozda

Faculty and Staff

Nunivak Islanders (Nuniwarmiut) report Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus; atgiiyar) was a significant and consistent subsistence resource during the first half of the 20th century. Following an absence of at least 30 years, Pacific cod returned to Nunivak waters in the mid-1980s and were once again incorporated into the Nuniwarmiut subsistence round. This report presents an overview of traditional and contemporary Pacific cod fishing primarily collected as “traditional knowledge” from Nunivak elders, as well as from literature and archival sources. The report also summarizes the current state of the Nunivak Pacific cod fishery with results of subsistence fish surveys and documentation …

Variation In The Trophic Position Of Spiny Dogfish (Squalus Acanthias) In The Northeastern Pacific Ocean: An Approach Using Carbon And Nitrogen Stable Isotopes, Alexander George Andrews Dec 2010

Variation In The Trophic Position Of Spiny Dogfish (Squalus Acanthias) In The Northeastern Pacific Ocean: An Approach Using Carbon And Nitrogen Stable Isotopes, Alexander George Andrews

Fisheries

"Spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) are among the most abundant shark species in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA). An increase in relative biomass of spiny dogfish in 2003 and 2007 inspired interest in this species as a commercial resource. However, very little was known about the ecology of this species in the GOA. This study investigated the trophic role of spiny dogfish in the GOA, British Columbia (BC), and Washington using stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen. Specifically, we examined the trophic position (TP) of spiny dogfish in relation to length, sex, and geographic region. Weathervane scallops (Patinopecten caurinus) were …

First-Generation Effects On Development Time Of Outcrossing Between Geographically Isolated And Seasonally Isolated Populations Of Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha), Jesse D. Echave Dec 2010

First-Generation Effects On Development Time Of Outcrossing Between Geographically Isolated And Seasonally Isolated Populations Of Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha), Jesse D. Echave

Fisheries

Bootstrap analyses of hatch data collected during two independent experiments revealed that hybridization between pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) breeding populations separated at either a large geographic scale or a fine temporal scale can influence development time. Restricted maximum likelihood estimators also revealed that sire, dam, cross, and parental interaction can influence genetic variance associated with development time at either scale. Few studies have investigated the extent of local adaptation that results from fine-scale ecological variation, the genetic underpinnings of that adaptation, or the potential impacts outbreeding at that level may have on fitness. We tested whether or not local adaptation …

Ontogenetic Considerations In The Trophic Level Of Commercial Groundfish Species In The Gulf Of Alaska, Jennifer Marie Marsh Dec 2010

Ontogenetic Considerations In The Trophic Level Of Commercial Groundfish Species In The Gulf Of Alaska, Jennifer Marie Marsh

Fisheries

"Trends in trophic level (TL) estimates of commercial fishery catches are used as ecosystem-based indicators for sustainability, but these estimates often do not incorporate species-specific interannual and ontogenetic feeding patterns. This study provides a finer resolution of ontogenetic and temporal variations in the trophic position of four groundfish species in the central Gulf of Alaska (GOA), walleye pollock (Theragra chaleogramma), Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus), arrowtooth flounder (Atheresthes stomias), and Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis), using stable isotope analysis to assess TL and diet source. Samples were collected from the northeastern side of Kodiak Island, Alaska, from 2000-2004. Several Analysis of Covariance …

Entropy In Two American Road Narratives, Sean Deskin Dec 2010

Entropy In Two American Road Narratives, Sean Deskin

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Tony Tanner's book City of Words analyzes American literature from 1950-1970; in the chapter entitled "Everything Running Down" the theme of entropy, the second law of thermodynamics, is explored and revealed to be a common motif within many works of American literature. Tanner's analysis does not specifically address the presence of entropy within the genre of the American road narrative; when considering his analysis presented in "Everything Running Down" with Kris Lackey's analysis of American road narratives presented in his book RoadFrames, the presence of entropy and how it is applied within the American road narrative becomes apparent. Although Jack …

Place Matters: An Evolutionary Approach To Annie Proulx's "The Half-Skinned Steer"And "Wamsutter Wolf", Erin Walker Dec 2010

Place Matters: An Evolutionary Approach To Annie Proulx's "The Half-Skinned Steer"And "Wamsutter Wolf", Erin Walker

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In Annie Proulx's interview with Charlie Rose, she states that her stories come "from place." Ecocriticism has been the predominant lens with which to understand Proulx's work; however, ecocriticism's nebulous tenets and theoretical deficiencies perpetuate sentimental pastoralism of geographical determinism. The shaping impact of Wyoming's environment in Proulx's work lends itself to an evolutionary perspective. Proulx's fiction, like evolutionary theory, examines humanity's unique, reciprocal relationship with nature. The evolutionary approach provides readers with a framework to understand the human relationship to our environment, a theme Proulx's work examines. This approach also augments current criticism that notes the importance of place …

The Effects Of Rhes On Opioid Analgesia, Franklin Lee Dec 2010

The Effects Of Rhes On Opioid Analgesia, Franklin Lee

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Rhes (Ras homolog enriched in striatum) has been identified as a novel monomeric G-protein involved in dopaminergic and other signaling in the striatum. Given the many effects of opioids that involve striatal circuitry, genetically engineered mice that are incapable of making Rhes (rhes-/-) and their control littermates (rhes+/+) were subjected to behavioral tests to determine if any differences existed in opioid analgesia, tolerance, withdrawal, reward, and locomotion. Rhes-/- mice showed an increased opioid mediated analgesia, along with an absence of tolerance and decrease in withdrawal when compared with rhes+/+ littermates. However, no significant changes were seen in opioid induced locomotor …

She spends the two months after the hurricane in various parts of Louisiana trying to pick up the pieces of her uprooted reality. Along the way, she encounters ordinary people who act as inspirations and is also reminded of her deceased Chinese grandmother, whom she was care-giver to before she died and whose stories about life in China and the US parallel the woman´s own life during the post-Katrina months of vulnerability and change.

The Facets Of Hostile Attributional Bias: The Importance Of Aggression Subtypes And Provocateur Motivation, Melissa Kunimatsu Dec 2010

The Facets Of Hostile Attributional Bias: The Importance Of Aggression Subtypes And Provocateur Motivation, Melissa Kunimatsu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The current study examined the association of hostile attributional bias (HAB) with the functions (proactive and reactive) and subtypes (reactive relational and reactive overt) of aggression as well as with perceived provocateur motivation (proactive or reactive) in a high school sample (mean age = 16.51; 50% male; 31% Caucasian). Revisions to a measure of HAB were made both in administration (adding animations/narration) and content (adding perceived provocateur motivation questions). Results indicated that the animation/narration measure showed comparable internal consistency reliability to the written and displayed an increased ability to predict total aggression. However, a unique relationship between HAB and reactive …

Water Quality Modeling Of Freshwater Diversions In The Barataria Basin, Jeevan Neupane Dec 2010

Water Quality Modeling Of Freshwater Diversions In The Barataria Basin, Jeevan Neupane

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A 1-D tidal, salinity and water quality model that analyzes the impacts of freshwater diversions with median and high flow on the water level, salinity and nutrient concentration of the Barataria Basin over a 2 period is presented here. The model predicts that the salinity of Lower Barataria decreases with the introduction of freshwater diversions. The model also predicts that nutrient concentration increases in Barataria Basin and decreases in Northern Gulf of Mexico with the introduction of diversions. The model shows the impact of freshwater diversions on water level except in the neighborhood of the diversion sites are small.

"I Wonder When We'll Be In Civilization Again": Women, Alaska And The 1910 Seattle To Ophir Travel Letter Of Cinthia "Addie" Rieck, Lillian Anderson Misel Dec 2010

"I Wonder When We'll Be In Civilization Again": Women, Alaska And The 1910 Seattle To Ophir Travel Letter Of Cinthia "Addie" Rieck, Lillian Anderson Misel

Arctic and Northern Studies

Mainstream Alaskan history has largely ignored women's role in the development of the state during the early 20th century. Although mainly a male endeavor, the multiple Alaskan gold stampedes from 1899 to 1914 brought a migration of women, and they played a role in the development of the territory. The current literature of women in the north focuses primarily on the Canadian Klondike stampede of 1897-98 which saw women traveling to the gold fields for a variety of reasons, such as to support their husbands in their ventures, seek their own business opportunities, or just seek adventure. The same reasons …

Ecology Of Prince Of Wales Spruce Grouse, Aleya R. Nelson Dec 2010

Ecology Of Prince Of Wales Spruce Grouse, Aleya R. Nelson

Biological Sciences

Recently, spruce grouse on Prince of Wales Island (POW) in southeast Alaska have been proposed as a separate subspecies. Furthermore, life-history of spruce grouse on POW, which is temperate coastal rainforest, varies sufficiently from birds in mainland areas, mostly boreal forest, to warrant specific management. Therefore, I examined the ecology of spruce grouse on POW to determine how timber harvest influences their survival and habitat selection and ultimately to provide recommendations for their conservation. During 2007-2009, we found that the greatest variation in survival probability was attributed to breeding status. The annual survival of non-breeding birds was 0.72±0.082 (S±) while …

Flow velocity field, vorticity and circulation and wall shear stresses were simulated by FSI approach under conditions of pulsatile flow in a scale model of the rabbit elastin-induced aneurysm. The flow pattern inside the aneurysm sac confirmed the in vitro experimental findings that in diastole time period the flow inside the aneurysm sac is a stable circular clock-wise flow, while in systole time period higher velocity enters into the aneurysm sac and during systole and diastole time period an anti-clock circular flow pattern emerged near the distal neck; in the 3-D aneurysm sac, the kinetic energy per point is about …

Psychophysiological Responses To Disgust: Cardiovascular And Facial Muscle Patterns Associated With Different Functional Domains, Robert Oum Dec 2010

Psychophysiological Responses To Disgust: Cardiovascular And Facial Muscle Patterns Associated With Different Functional Domains, Robert Oum

Open Access Dissertations

This study examined the distinguishing physiological characteristics of the disgust reaction across different domains. According to an evolutionary analysis, disgust is a heterogeneous emotion with features that are specific to three distinct domains: pathogens, sex, and morality. Each domain is predicted to take as input information specific to the adaptive problem it evolved to solve and regulate behavior accordingly. The goal of the present study was to investigate whether there are any adaptive physiological differences associated with the disgust response across domains. Participants were asked to imagine acts that elicit pathogen, sexual, and moral disgust. It was hypothesized that there …

Population Structure And The Mating System Of Loggerhead Turtles (Caretta Caretta), Janne Thoft Nielsen

Open Access Dissertations

Studies of the maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA in loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) demonstrate that females are philopatric, returning to nest in the region where they hatched. Eleven genetic stocks of maternal lineages have been identified in the Atlantic Ocean. An analysis of the conventionally-used 380 bp of the mitochondrial control region of a sample of individuals from the genetic stock of loggerheads in Mexico (N = 175) revealed 13 haplotypes. When a longer sequence read of 815 bp was analyzed, 17 haplotypes were uncovered. In the genetic stock of loggerheads in northwestern Florida (N = 25), three haplotypes were …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Self-Renewal In Marrow Stromal Stem Cells, Carmen I. Rios Dec 2010

Molecular Mechanisms Of Self-Renewal In Marrow Stromal Stem Cells, Carmen I. Rios

Open Access Dissertations

Adult stem cells currently represent the most promising cell type for cell therapy approaches in regenerative medicine. To obtain a thorough understanding of their properties is essential for successful stem cell therapy approaches. We previously identified a unique population of human marrow-isolated adult multilineage inducible (MIAMI) cells isolated from males and females 3 to 72 years of age. Although their numbers decrease with age, their molecular profile is sustained, suggesting that these cells self-renew during the lifetime of the individual. Understanding the mechanisms of in vitro self-renewal will allow us to expand these cells to numbers suitable for cell therapy …
