Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Studies of the neural mechanisms of learning, especially of sensitization, have benefitted from extensive research on the model species, Aplysia californica (hereafter Aplysia). Considering this volume of literature on mechanisms, it is surprising that our understanding of the ecological context of sensitization in Aplysia is completely lacking. Indeed, the widespread use of strong electric shock to induce sensitization (an enhancement of withdrawal reflexes following noxious stimulation) is completely unnatural and leaves unanswered the question of whether this simple form of learning has any ecological relevance. We hypothesized that sublethal attack by a co-occurring predator, the spiny lobster, Panulirus interruptus, might …

Time To Blossom: An Inquiry Into Bloom’S Taxonomy As A Hierarchy And Means For Teaching Legal Research Skills, Paul D. Callister
Time To Blossom: An Inquiry Into Bloom’S Taxonomy As A Hierarchy And Means For Teaching Legal Research Skills, Paul D. Callister
Faculty Works
Within law librarianship and legal education, there has been far too little scholarly engagement on the underlying pedagogy at the heart of legal research instruction. To correct this deficiency, law librarianship needs to open a dialogue and should consider adapting Bloom’s Taxonomy as a common schema for a collaborative effort.
This paper was initially presented at the "Conference on Legal Information: Scholarship and Teaching," held at the University of Colorado Law School on June 21-22, 2009, as part of its Boulder Summer Conference Series. It follows the author's own recently published challenge to law librarianship and legal research instructors to …

Trading Water: Using Tradable Permits To Promote Conservation And Efficient Allocation Of An Increasingly Scarce Resource, Paul W. Puckett
Trading Water: Using Tradable Permits To Promote Conservation And Efficient Allocation Of An Increasingly Scarce Resource, Paul W. Puckett
Emory Law Journal
This Comment argues that a free-market system for water-use rights should be implemented to address and prevent water shortages. A water market system would require that secure property rights be attached to water use and that those rights be freely tradable. Current water-rights regimes used in the United States are not sufficient to support such a market system because current regimes do not grant secure property rights in water use, and it is unclear to what extent water-use rights can be transferred. Therefore, a market system under the current water-rights regimes would not be able to maximize its potential to …
Protecting Preachers From Prejudice: Methods For Improving Analysis Of The Ministerial Exception To Title Vii, Benton C. Martin
Protecting Preachers From Prejudice: Methods For Improving Analysis Of The Ministerial Exception To Title Vii, Benton C. Martin
Emory Law Journal
Instead of the current approach, which defers to religious organizations, this Comment argues that any right to church autonomy should be balanced against the government’s interest in enforcing anti-discrimination laws. The need for an appropriate balancing test is confirmed by recent lower court opinions that have struggled to justify a deferential approach in the face of employment decisions by religious institutions that violate federal law and lack any religious justification. After arguing for a more sound constitutional approach, this Comment ultimately proposes an amendment to Title VII that would protect ministers from non-religious discrimination while shielding religious organizations from intrusion …
Impersonal Jurisdiction, Allan Erbsen
Impersonal Jurisdiction, Allan Erbsen
Emory Law Journal
Constitutional law governing personal jurisdiction in state courts inspires fascination and consternation. Courts and commentators recognize the issue¿s importance, but cannot agree on the purpose that limits on personal jurisdiction serve, which clauses in the Constitution (if any) supply those limits, and whether current doctrine implementing those limits is coherent. This Article seeks to reorient the discussion by developing a framework for thinking about why and how the Constitution regulates personal jurisdiction. It concludes that principles animating the emerging field of horizontal federalism¿the constitutional relationship between states¿should guide jurisdictional rules and instigate sweeping reevaluation of modern jurisprudence. In particular, the …
All Things In Proportion? American Rights Review And The Problem Of Balancing, Jud Mathews, Alec Stone Sweet
All Things In Proportion? American Rights Review And The Problem Of Balancing, Jud Mathews, Alec Stone Sweet
Emory Law Journal
This Article describes and evaluates the evolution of rights doctrine in the United States, focusing on the problem of balancing. In the current Supreme Court, deep conflict over whether, when, and how courts balance rights is omnipresent. Elsewhere, we find that the world¿s most powerful constitutional courts have embraced a stable analytical procedure for balancing, known as proportionality. Today, proportionality analysis (PA) constitutes the defining doctrinal core of a transnational, rights-based constitutionalism. This Article critically examines alleged American exceptionalism, from the standpoint of comparative constitutional law and practice.

Contemporary Grouping In Mixed-Size Dairy Herds Experiencing Four Seasons, Mohammad Ali̇ Nilforooshan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Countries with different herd structures and climates use different combinations of herd, year, and season to define the effect of their climatic conditions and management. Estimates of variance components and Akaike information criterion values resulting from 8 analytical models differentiated by different combinations of herd, year and season effects were compared for milk and fat yields. Data consisted of pedigree and records of 11,850 Holsteins freshening in 38 dairy herds of Isfahan, Iran, between January 1994 and October 2001. Heritability estimates were lowest for the models that used herd-year combination as a random effect. Moreover, the use of these models …

The Performance Of A Small-Scale, High-Density, Continuous System For Culturing The Rotifer Brachionus Plicatilis, Umur Önal, İhsan Çeli̇k, Sebahatti̇n Ergün
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The performance of a high-density continuous system was evaluated as an alternative to conventional low-density batch-culture systems for culturing the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. Rotifer densities ranging from 1700 to 3760 individuals/mL were achieved in 4 different trials that lasted 10-18 days. Problems associated with NH_3-N and pH were controlled by increasing the water exchange rate and periodic addition of ammonia remover. While NH_3-N and pH values were 0-8.8 mg/L and 6.9-9.3, respectively, the most important problem was the accumulation of TSS at concentrations of up to 85 mL/L within a very short time after start-up. Further studies are required to …

Conception Rates For Standing Estrus And Fixed-Time Insemination In Dairy Heifers Synchronized With Gnrh And Pgf_{2\Alpha}, Samir Z. El-Zarkouny
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of GnRH PGF-based protocols on reproductive outcome in Holstein heifers. Heifers were randomly assigned to the control group (n = 14), or treatment groups (n = 50) treated with GnRH (day -7) and PGF_{2\alpha} (day 0). Heifers that exhibited estrus were inseminated (Select Synch, n = 34) and heifers that did not exhibit estrus up to 48 h after PGF_{2\alpha} injection received a second GnRH injection and were fixed-time inseminated (Ovsynch, n = 16). Conception rates were 40%, 55.9%, and 31.3%, and overall pregnancy rates (P < 0.05) were 64.3%, 97%, and 87.5% in the control, Select Synch, and Ovsynch groups, respectively. Ovsynch heifers had 1.8 ± 0.5 and 3.2 ± 0.6 ng mL^{–1} of serum P4, versus 3.3 ± 0.5 and 3.8 ± 0.6 ng mL–1 in the Select Synch heifers at the time of the first GnRH and PGF_{2\alpha} injection, respectively. Conception rates were 55.6% and 58.3% when P4 concentrations were high, and were 50% and 25% when P4 concentrations were low at the time of the first GnRH and PGF_{2\alpha} injection, respectively. Dairy heifers synchronized with GnRH and PGF_{2\alpha} should be inseminated when estrus is observed, and heifers that do not exhibit estrus up to 48 h after PGF_{2\alpha} injection should be given a second GnRH injection and fixed-time inseminated 16-20 h later.

Impairments In Haematological Parameters Of Saprolegnia Spp. Infected Tench,Tinca Tinca, Syed Lal Shah
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Haematological parameters of tench (Tinca tinca) infected by Saprolegnia spp. were studied. All parameters, except mean corpuscular volume (MCV), decreased in response to infection. A significant (P < 0.05) decrease was observed in haemoglobin (Hb) (-26.85%), red blood cell count (RBCc) (-20.94%), leucocrit (Lct) (-24.14%), and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) (-9.06%). Haematocrit (Hct), white blood cell count (WBCc), and mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) also decreased (-7.66%, -12.44%, and -6.19%, respectively); however, differences between the infected and control groups were not significant. Among the parameters, only MCV had a non-significant increase (+7.84%) in the infected fish. The study results show that saprolegniasis caused anaemia and immunosuppression, followed by mortality in tench. Mortality was attributed to haemodilution caused by haemorrhaging and the breakdown of osmotic balance due to tissue (skin and muscular layer) destruction via the penetration of the hyphae; however, lethargy was another mortality promoting factor. Mortality among the Saprolegnia-infected fish also depended upon the initial site of infection, type of tissue destroyed, growth rate of the fungus, and ability of individual fish to withstand the stress. The present study was conducted to investigate physiological impairment in Saprolegnia-infected Tinca tinca under laboratory conditions; however, further studies at the population level in natural habitats and under similar stress conditions are needed.

Isolation And Characterization Of Vibrio ( Listonella) Anguillarum From Catfish, Mehrnaz Rad, Davar Shahsavani
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Vibrio anguillarum was isolated from several organs of some aquarium catfish in a fish population with high mortality. Macroscopic examination of the affected catfish revealed ascites in the abdomen, site-petechiae, and dorsal erection. Although there are some variations in phenotypic characterization among different isolates of Vibrio anguillarum, the majority show a common biochemical profile with distinct microscopic appearance that can provide presumptive identification of Vibrio anguillarum. Biochemical tests were used for identification of Vibrio anguillarum in aquarium catfish in this report.

Factors Affecting Wool Characteristics Of Kari Sheep In Pakistan, Sohail Ahmad, Muhammad Sajjad Khan, M. Fatah Ullah Khan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The present study attempted to generate some basic information on wool production and quality in the Kari breed. Thirty flocks, 10 each in the 3 Union Councils (UCs), were registered for on-farm performance recording in the Lotkho Tehsil, north of Chitral city. Two animals per flock were selected for collecting fleece samples from 3 yearly shearings. The actual greasy wool yield per sheep was 937 g. Wool yield per shearing averaged 366 ± 9.6 g. Location and flock differences were found significant (P < 0.01). The same was also true for the clean fleece yield with an overall average of 300 ± 8.2 g per shearing. The fibre diameter averaged 23 ± 0.2 µm, and flock differences were significant (P < 0.01). The staple length varied among flocks (P < 0.01), locations, and shearing season (P < 0.05). Male Kari had more medulated fibres than female Kari (6.9 ± 0.37% vs. 5.5 ± 0.37%). The greasy and clean fleece yields were quite repeatable traits (repeatability > 0.5). The repeatability estimates of fibre diameter and staple length were 0.38 and 0.20, respectively. Sheep of …
