Saint-Saens' "Other": Orientalism In Samson Et Dalila, Elizabeth Janelle Sallinger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Subtleties in art and music have always been a factor in swaying people's ideas and opinions. Some pieces of music make a direct attempt to communicate and influence how one should view a certain group of people or a culture, often creating a great social divide and a tense atmosphere. Ralph Locke and Edward Said explain "Orientalism" as "a corporate institution for dealing with the Orient- dealing with it by making statements about it . . . a Western style for dominating, restructuring, and having authority over the Orient." Though Orientalism began as working with just a Far Eastern sound, …

Pursuant to the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA), patient dumping is illegal in the United States. American hospitals cannot inappropriately discharge or transfer unstable patients to other medical facilities in the United States without violating EMTALA. Yet, American hospitals are doing this very thing- international patient dumping, by inappropriately transferring or discharging (i.e. shipping) indigent undocumented immigrants in arguably unstable conditions to Third World medical facilities in the home country of the immigrant absent federal government oversight or compliance with EMTALA.

It Taxes A Village: The Problem With Routinely Taxing Barter Transactions, Sergio Pareja
Faculty Scholarship
Under current law, all true barter transactions, such as babysitting cooperatives, create taxable income. Although the IRS often fails to catch unreported transactions, lawyers and accountants have an ethical duty to advise clients to report these taxable transactions on their income tax returns. This article proposes that Congress change the law to generally exclude barter transactions from income when they do not rise to the level of being a trade or business of the taxpayer. This simple change to the law will allow communities to work together without worrying about tax disincentives for doing so.

Effectiveness Of Weight Control Through Weight Watch Programs, V. A. Black, P. Boumtje
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Linear probability estimation and survey data are employed to quantify the influence of the lifestyles of individuals on the change in their body mass index (BMI). The analysis also explores the effects of demographic characteristics (age, gender, and ethnicity) in weight management. Results suggest evidence of association between changes in lifestyle and changes in the BMI of individuals.

Distribution Of The Southeastern Shrew (Sorex Longirostris Longirostris) In Arkansas, G. A. Mikel, Gary A. Heidt, David W. Clark
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The southeastern shrew (Sorex longirostris longirostris) is considered uncommon and, due to a lack of knowledge, a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Arkansas. Also, eastern Arkansas may represent a gap in the species’ distribution. Therefore, we evaluated persistence at previous capture sites, surveyed additional counties, quantified microhabitat at our capture locations, and compiled occurrences. Since Sealander and Heidt’s (1990) Arkansas Mammals detailed its occurrence, additional captures by Huston and Nelson (1994), Showen (2006), and this study document new counties (Pope and Searcy) and a new ecoregion (Arkansas Valley). Number of specimens in Arkansas has increased to 17 in 11 …

Seasonal Activity Of The Ozark Highlands Leech, Macrobdella Diplotertia, (Annelida: Hirudinea) In North-Central Arkansas, M. Connior, Stanley E. Trauth
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The Ozark Highlands Leech, Macrobdella diplotertia, occurs intermittently throughout Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri. Limited natural history of this species is known. Herein, we report a new county occurrence for this leech from a cattle pond in southern Marion County, Arkansas. We also report on the seasonal activity and novel hosts of this species. We surveyed the inhabited pond monthly to determine activity and collected natural history data on this species. This study indicated that this species appears to be most active in spring, summer, and early fall, but inactive during the winter. We also documented five new anuran hosts for …

Aldo Leopold’S Land Ethic And The Great Lakes: A Paradigm For Understanding The Morality Of Aquatic Invasive Species Management, M. Andrew Sanford, John Uglietta, Phd
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
Abstract: This essay explores what obligations we have to protect the Great lakes ecosystem from the threat of aquatic invasive species within the context of Aldo Leopold‟s seminal essay in environmental philosophy The Land Ethic. In this essay I argue that Leopold‟s land ethic provides a consistent and dynamic paradigm for how we perceive and protect the natural environment. The land ethic is summarized in what I call Leopold’s Edict which directs us to preserve the health and beauty of the natural environment. The land ethic implies that people interested in conservation must develop a firm understanding of what …
Teaching Play Activities To Children With Autism Comparing Adult And Peer Models, Lisa Shattuck
Teaching Play Activities To Children With Autism Comparing Adult And Peer Models, Lisa Shattuck
McNair Scholars Journal
Video modeling is a strategy used to teach skills to children with autism. Few researchers have investigated whether peer or adult video models are more effective in teaching skills such as play. While typical children may learn better from peers than adults, it is possible that children with autism do not detect differences between peer and adult models and learn equally well from both. This study used a multiple baseline design to assess whether video modeling was associated with changes in the frequency of appropriate play behaviors for two preschoolers with autism. Results showed that the video modeling intervention increased …

Anxiety disorders affect roughly 40 million American adults in a given year. Those suffering from anxiety disorders often experience additional stress-linked illnesses, such as depression. Previous research has shown that stress exposure increases levels of the endogenous neuropeptide dynorphin, which the kappa opioid system is selectively activated by. This study examined the role of the kappa opioid system in regulating stress-related behavior using the elevated plusmaze. Behavioral stress responses were examined in male Wistar rats following i.p. administration of opioid agonist U-50,488 (0 or 10 mg/kg). Subjects were pretreated with the kappa opioid antagonist nor-binaltorphimine (nor-BNI) 24 hours prior to …

We report the construction of a genome-wide fish metabolic network model, MetaFishNet, and its application to analyzing high throughput gene expression data. This model is a stepping stone to broader applications of fish systems biology, for example by guiding study design through comparison with human metabolism and the integration of multiple data types. MetaFishNet resources, including a pathway enrichment analysis tool, are accessible at http://metafishnet.appspot.com.

Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover: The Curious Case Of Wild Ginger Pollination, W. John Hayden
Biology Faculty Publications
What pollinates wild ginger? This seems like an easy question. The inconspicuous little flowers are held close to the forest floor, often completely hidden by a dense canopy of ginger leaves above. Flower color is rather drab, dominated by brown and maroon hues. Wind pollination seems completely unlikely and flowers pollinated by bees, butterflies, moths, or hummingbirds are always much more showy and accessible to these flying creatures. Flies, however, given their natural inclination to seek carrion as a food source for their babies (i.e. maggots), are often attracted to brown and maroon flowers. And because their actual quarry, animal …
Panacea Or Pathetic Fallacy? The Swiss Ban On Minarets, Lorenz Langer
Panacea Or Pathetic Fallacy? The Swiss Ban On Minarets, Lorenz Langer
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
On November 29, 2009, Swiss voters adopted a ballot initiative introducing a constitutional ban on the construction of minarets. This Article provides a thick description of the minaret vote's context. A legal analysis addresses the implications of the ban under national, regional, and international normative frameworks. The Article argues that the ban is irreconcilable with the Swiss constitutional bill of rights and several international human right provisions. In Switzerland, however, respect for the vox populi potentially trumps any concern over conflicting international obligations, and there is no effective judicial review of initiatives. This lack of judicial review is partly a …

Spheroid Detection In 2d Images Using Circular Hough Transform, Priyanka Chaudhary
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Three-dimensional endothelial cell sprouting assay (3D-ECSA) exhibits differentiation of endothelial cells into sprouting structures inside a 3D matrix of collagen I. It is a screening tool to study endothelial cell behavior and identification of angiogenesis inhibitors. The shape and size of an EC spheroid (aggregation of ~ 750 cells) is important with respect to its growth performance in presence of angiogenic stimulators. Apparently, tubules formed on malformed spheroids lack homogeneity in terms of density and length. This requires segregation of well formed spheroids from malformed ones to obtain better performance metrics. We aim to develop and validate an automated imaging …
Money Does Grow On Trees: A. B. Hammond And The Age Of The Lumber Baron, Gregory Llewellyn Gordon
Money Does Grow On Trees: A. B. Hammond And The Age Of The Lumber Baron, Gregory Llewellyn Gordon
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Two highly contrasting views inform our view of America's Industrial Era (1877-1920). The "captains of industry" thesis holds that America's industrial and economic might depended on creative capitalists freely pursuing individual wealth. The opposing "robber baron" perspective holds that the capitalist free-market system engendered a great disparity of wealth and resulted in social and environmental costs while accruing benefits to the few.
In seeking to understand the Industrial Era historians have traditionally looked toward the top echelon of American businessmen: Rockefeller, Gould, Morgan, and the like, largely ignoring the scores of second-tier capitalists. The era of "laissez-faire" capitalism, however, was …

While reports of endangered species, pollutants and toxins in the environment, problematic nuclear and other hazardous wastes, and threats to the biosphere have been highlighted occasionally by the media for many years, recent attention has focused on changes that humans are forcing on the global climate. Indicators of these changes and dire predictions of adverse future effects have been identified periodically by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a collaborative effort of more than a thousand scholars amassed by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme to assess the latest scientific, technical, and socioeconomic studies so …

Background: Methods of manual cell localization and outlining are so onerous that automated tracking methods would seem mandatory for handling huge image sequences, nevertheless manual tracking is, astonishingly, still widely practiced in areas such as cell biology which are outside the influence of most image processing research. The goal of our research is to address this gap by developing automated methods of cell tracking, localization, and segmentation. Since even an optimal frame-to-frame association method cannot compensate and recover from poor detection, it is clear that the quality of cell tracking depends on the quality of cell detection within each frame. Methods: …
