A State's Duty To Prevent And Respond To Cyberterrorist Acts, Christopher E. Lentz Jan 2010

A State's Duty To Prevent And Respond To Cyberterrorist Acts, Christopher E. Lentz

Chicago Journal of International Law

Cyberterrorism combines two of the most prominent developments of the last twenty years: the increasing reliance on the internet's infrastructure, and the threat of international terrorism committed by non-state actors. Although multilateral treaties aim to shore up some aspects of cybercrime, and the Security Council has taken steps towards preventing terrorist acts, international law appears to lack a cohesive approach for dealing with situations where cyberspace and terrorism overlap. This Comment proposes one such approach for tackling the emergent problem of cyberterrorism. International law has yet to articulate a satisfactory prohibition on, or definition of, "terrorism." Instead, international agreements ban …

Shutter Speed Deconstructing A Photographic Ideal, Claire Krueger Jan 2010

Shutter Speed Deconstructing A Photographic Ideal, Claire Krueger

Theses & ETDs

As the 20th century progressed, the increasing availability of inexpensive photographic technology allowed for a majority of people to document their memories in a tangible form. However, the link between our photographs and our memories is not always concrete. My thesis, a creative studio project, examines this connection between our tangible memories (photographs) and our abstract mental memories. Through the manipulation of found photographs and the documentation of transitory moments, my art challenges the viewer to re-examine the relationship between photographs and our memories. Sculptures, altered prints, and found materials represent passing time, memory and mortality; the concept of time …

Creative Control An Explanation Of Species-Specific Enrichment In Mongoose Lemurs (Eulemur Mongoz) And Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus), Hannah Brown Jan 2010

Creative Control An Explanation Of Species-Specific Enrichment In Mongoose Lemurs (Eulemur Mongoz) And Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus), Hannah Brown

Theses & ETDs

Creative enrichment designed for a species, or even for a specific individual, can provide an animal with environmental stimulation that may lead to a whole array of benefits for the animal. Exposure to speciesspecific enrichment, or enrichment that is designed for the adaptations of a particular species, encourages naturalistic behaviors by providing cues that are more biologically salient than a more generalized enrichment item. This study explores the relationship between species-specific stimuli and the production of naturalistic behaviors. An acoustic enrichment device was presented to two captive mammalian groups: mongoose lemurs (Eulemur mongoz) and bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Both species …

Microalgae Harvesting By Flocculation With Polymer-Coated Magnetite Particles, Humayun Shariff Jan 2010

Microalgae Harvesting By Flocculation With Polymer-Coated Magnetite Particles, Humayun Shariff

Masters Theses

"Although microalgae are considered to be one of the potentially significant feedstock for renewable biofuels, harvesting them efficiently from culture ponds has been a major hurdle. The conventional harvesting methods such as centrifugation and filtration are very time and labor intensive processes. Gravimetrical settlement with the aid of cationic flocculants is the most widely employed technique, but suffers from the difficulty in recovering microalgae floes. Furthermore, recycling of these flocculants after the harvesting process is not possible. Polymer-coated magnetite particles have been investigated for applications in various fields. This research has focused on the development of a novel and efficient …

Evaluation Of Remediation Agents For Ddt- And Pcb-Contaminated Wetlands, Scott Cloutier Jan 2010

Evaluation Of Remediation Agents For Ddt- And Pcb-Contaminated Wetlands, Scott Cloutier

Master's Theses and Capstones

Wetland sediments that are contaminated with hydrophobic organic compounds, such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can be remediated via in-situ methods. Four different amendment agents, activated carbon, zero valent iron, organoclay and seaweed were assessed. Activated carbon provided the greatest reduction in both PCB and DDx porewater concentrations: an average of 90% or greater reduction of the six congeners detected. Two amendment delivery technologies were evaluated in a microcosm experiment: a granular activated carbon slurry and Aquablok containing powdered activated carbon. The addition of activated carbon via both delivery techniques was found to significantly decrease PCB porewater concentrations …

Seasonal Nitrate Dynamics In An Agriculturally Influenced New Hampshire Headwater Stream, Catherine Rutherford Dunlap Jan 2010

Seasonal Nitrate Dynamics In An Agriculturally Influenced New Hampshire Headwater Stream, Catherine Rutherford Dunlap

Master's Theses and Capstones

Nitrate (NO3-) uptake and denitrification in small headwater streams can have significant implications for downstream water quality. I measured seasonal NO3- uptake and longitudinal patterns in potential sediment denitrification in a New Hampshire agriculturally influenced stream during 2009. NO3- uptake was measured through short-term NO3- enrichments and potential denitrification was measured using the Chloramphenicol-amended acetylene-inhibition method. NO3 - was taken up in autumn but not in spring or summer. In autumn, on average 87% of the daily NO3- load was taken up and a maximum of 4% was removed via denitrification. Results suggest that, in this stream, carbon availability from …

A Multi-Scale Evaluation Of Eastern Hognose Snake (Heterodon Platirhinos) Habitat Selection At The Northern Extent Of Its Range, Celine Goulet Jan 2010

A Multi-Scale Evaluation Of Eastern Hognose Snake (Heterodon Platirhinos) Habitat Selection At The Northern Extent Of Its Range, Celine Goulet

Master's Theses and Capstones

A complex interaction of biotic and abiotic variables structure landscapes into a hierarchal assemblage of habitats. Species respond to this environmental hierarchy by selecting habitat based upon a set of ecological variables occurring across a range of organizational levels. However, as the criteria for selection may be scale-dependent, it is vital to quantify the influence these variables have on species distribution at each spatial scale. Two years of telemetry data from 17 individuals were used to examine the multi-scale selection process in the northern population of Heterodon platirhinos on the New Boston Air Force Station in New Boston, New Hampshire. …

Aspects Of The Reproduction Of An Invasive Crab, Hemigrapsus Sanguineus, In Northern And Southern New England, Emily F. Gamelin Jan 2010

Aspects Of The Reproduction Of An Invasive Crab, Hemigrapsus Sanguineus, In Northern And Southern New England, Emily F. Gamelin

Master's Theses and Capstones

Populations of the invasive shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus , were studied in northern and southern New England to determine if crabs differ in reproductive behavior or characteristics between these regions. Additionally, effects of temperature on reproductive activity were quantified through laboratory experimentation.

Number of broods per season increased with temperature, but the seasonal total was limited to three broods in laboratory experiments. Broods experienced limited success at the lowest temperature, 10°C. The reproductive season was longer at lower latitudes, and females at this site had smaller average ovigerous size. Patterns of ovigery varied between the regions, suggesting the production of …

Impact Of Advanced Pretreatment On The Feasibility Of Uv/Hydrogen Peroxide Treatment For Degradation Of Organic Micropollutants, Ashlee L. Fuller

Master's Theses and Capstones

Research was performed to show the impact of several types of pretreatment at Water Treatment Plant, Andijk, on the Advanced Oxidation Process. The objective was to compare the effect of Ion Exchange with Ultra Filtration (IX-UF) pretreatment to the existing Coagulation, Sedimentation, Filtration (CSF) pretreatment on the effectiveness of the UV/H2O2 process. The micro-pollutants chosen for this study are NDMA, atrazine, 1,4-dioxane and bromacil.

Characterization of the water matrixes for the pretreated waters was completed to determine the impact of background absorption (DOC and nitrate) on micro pollutant degradation and OH· radical production. Collimated beam studies (MP UV) were performed …

Investigating Pheromone Variability In A Terrestrial Woodland Salamander, Adam James Chowinard Jan 2010

Investigating Pheromone Variability In A Terrestrial Woodland Salamander, Adam James Chowinard

Master's Theses and Capstones

The communication system of Plethodontid salamanders relies heavily upon chemical signaling. Pheromone molecules convey a tremendous amount of information to conspecifics, and facilitate a wide variety of the essential social functions of these animals. Much of the information contained within the pheromone mixture is variable from one individual to the next, such as the ability to recognize specific individuals, the size of the sender, and the relative "quality' of the signal. In order for variable information to be conveyed through chemical signals, the corresponding variability must be contained within the pheromone mixture itself. This variability may exist as a gradient …

Stream Temperature Impacts Of Culverts And Impervious Areas, Gary Lemay Jan 2010

Stream Temperature Impacts Of Culverts And Impervious Areas, Gary Lemay

Master's Theses and Capstones

Water temperature in small, headwater streams may reveal much about stream health. Yet, our understanding of stream temperature and its driving factors is limited compared to other water quality parameters. In addition to natural factors, research suggests that watershed urbanization may impact a stream's thermal regime. This research quantified culverts and impervious area's stream temperature impacts across coastal NH streams using experimental data and a deterministic temperature model. Impervious areas were found to increase streams' daily average temperatures, possibly accentuate storm temperature surges, but not diurnal temperature ranges. Road crossings were found to increase the variability of diurnal temperature ranges, …

Production Of Biodiesel From Microalgae, Nkongolo Mulumba Jan 2010

Production Of Biodiesel From Microalgae, Nkongolo Mulumba

Master's Theses and Capstones

Biodiesel production from microalgae is a promising technique, with advantages of high biomass yield with high lipid content. Challenges include effective techniques to harvest the grown microalgae, extraction of the algal oil and its transesterification to biodiesel. A microalgae strain was selected from 8 different species screened for growth rate and lipid content. A Tubular Photobioreactor was designed and constructed to study microalgae growth. Productivity of 1 g of dry algal biomass per liter of medium within 12 days was achieved, with lipid content up to 20 %. The observed 10 fold increase in biomass is higher than those reported …

Evaluating Sampling-Induced Stress In Atlantic Cod (Gadus Morhua), Travis S. Ford Jan 2010

Evaluating Sampling-Induced Stress In Atlantic Cod (Gadus Morhua), Travis S. Ford

Master's Theses and Capstones

Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, have historically been regarded as one of the most commercially and recreationally important fishes in the Gulf of Maine. All fish involved in fishing and aquaculture are subject to stress, indicated by elevated plasma cortisol concentrations. Given the amount of research conducted on Atlantic cod, stress, and cortisol, little has been done to compare different blood sampling methods and the effects they might have on plasma cortisol concentrations, particularly in adult fish. This study examined three different methods of repeated blood sampling (standard handling caudal vessel puncture, reduced handling caudal vessel puncture, and cannulation) in Atlantic …

Sensor Installation For The Local Calibration Of The Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide In New Hampshire, Matthew L. Steele Jan 2010

Sensor Installation For The Local Calibration Of The Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide In New Hampshire, Matthew L. Steele

Master's Theses and Capstones

Efficient and accurate pavement design is critical to control the costs of new roadway construction and maintenance. The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) is the most current pavement design procedure used to predict pavement damage and distress. It was calibrated using a national data set that includes data from instrumented pavement sections. The national calibration can be further refined to account for local conditions.

In this research a weather monitoring station and a set of pavement and base layer monitoring sensors were installed and baseline data from these sensors were collected. The measured structural response data from calibrated truck passes …

The Influence Of Stocking Density And Acoustic Conditioning On The Behavior And Growth Of Atlantic Cod, Gadus Morhua, Daniel Ward Jan 2010

The Influence Of Stocking Density And Acoustic Conditioning On The Behavior And Growth Of Atlantic Cod, Gadus Morhua, Daniel Ward

Master's Theses and Capstones

The goal of experiment one (Chapter One) was to determine if stocking density had an influence of the swimming behavior and spatial distribution of adult cod that were being raised in an aquaculture cage at the University of New Hampshire's Coastal Marine Laboratory. Acoustic telemetry and underwater video were used to quantify the behavior and distribution of cod that were stocked at four densities (5, 10, 25 and 45 kg/m³). At the lowest density (5 kg/m³) cod remained deep in the cage and spent 64.3 +/- 0.8% of their time below 1.80m (of a 2.70m cage). This contrasts to the …

Fifty-two calves were assigned to a randomized complete block design and were randomly assigned by block to one of four treatments: colostrum replacer with no sodium bicarbonate, colostrum replacer with 15g of sodium bicarbonate, colostrum replacer with 30g of sodium bicarbonate, and colostrum replacer with 45g of sodium bicarbonate to test for linear and quadratic effects. Calves were fed colostrum replacer (≥200g of IgG) in one feeding at 0 h and 2L milk replacer at 12, 24, 36, and 48 h. Only calves from multiparous cows, without dystocia, and born in calving pens were used. Sodium bicarbonate had a negative …

Sophisticated Credulity: Are Old Beliefs Disguised By New Terminology And Selective Learning?, Matthew A. Ramsey Jan 2010

Sophisticated Credulity: Are Old Beliefs Disguised By New Terminology And Selective Learning?, Matthew A. Ramsey

Doctoral Dissertations

The present research attempted to distinguish between traditional anomalistic belief (TAP) and pseudoscientific anomalistic belief (PSAP). In Study 1, I constructed the PSAP scale and then, to establish construct validity, examined its correlation to other measures related to TAP. In Studies 2 and 3, I examined how high and low TAP and PSAP believers differed in recalling information that either did, or did not support the existence of anomalistic phenomena. Participants read 12 abstracts on paranormal phenomena and were given T/F recall questions either immediately (Study 2) or following a four day delay period (Study 3). As expected, high and …

Asset Forfeiture: State Restrictions And Equitable Sharing, Charles Kucher Jan 2010

Asset Forfeiture: State Restrictions And Equitable Sharing, Charles Kucher

Master's Theses and Capstones

Civil asset forfeiture is criticized for its lack of procedural protections for property owners and for skewing the priorities of law enforcement. Federal civil forfeiture law allows federal agencies to prosecute civil forfeiture cases for state and local law enforcement agencies, a practice that is criticized for allowing the circumvention of state laws. This thesis looks at three factors governing forfeiture at the state level (standard of proof, conviction requirement and financial incentive) and examines their effect on federal equitable sharing payments. The results indicate that both conviction requirement and standard of proof affect equitable sharing payments and suggests that …

Book 1 Of William The Breton's "Philippide": A Translation, Gregory P. Stringer Jan 2010

Book 1 Of William The Breton's "Philippide": A Translation, Gregory P. Stringer

Master's Theses and Capstones

Among the contemporary narrative sources for the reign of King Philip II Augustus of France [r. 1179--1223], William the Breton's thirteenth-century epic poem the Philippide is the least well known and the least utilized. This thesis represents the first English language translation of a significant portion of the Philippide. The introduction explores William the Breton's life and works; the poem's sources, classical and contemporary; William the Breton's vocabulary and poetic voice; William the Breton's self-conception as a historian and a narrator, as demonstrated in his surviving works; and the overall theme and structure of the Philippide. It also includes as …

The Colonizing Impulse Of Postcolonial Theory, John C. Hawley Jan 2010

The Colonizing Impulse Of Postcolonial Theory, John C. Hawley

English

What some see as the ongoing collapse of English as a discrete discipline has been hastened along by postcolonial studies, but many have argued that this deconstruction has been true from the start, that literary studies in general "has speculated continually about the intellectual foundations within which its key questions are framed and which make it possible, and how things might be otherwise" (Moran 46). Robert Miklitsch for example, suggests that "literature . . . was once implicitly interdisciplinary, encompassing, as Hazlitt indicates, science as well as philosophy" (Miklitsch et al. 258). Nonetheless, writes David Glover, "whatever criteria one uses …

The Power Of Priming In Legal Advocacy: Using The Science Of First Impressions To Persuade The Reader, Kathryn M. Stanchi

Scholarly Works

The contribution of this Article is the synthesis of legal advocacy and the psychological studies of priming. It shows advocates how priming can help them make better strategic decisions in their briefs and gives specific examples of different ways to use priming in persuasive writing. Part I defines the basic concept of priming and gives examples of different ways that priming works. Part II begins the application of the priming studies to law. The focus of Part II is on priming the reader's emotional response through theme and story. It also examines how emotions can impact decision making in unexpected …
