Optimization Of A Chemical Reaction Train, Bahar Sansar

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

This project consists of the optimization of a chemical reactor train. The reactor considered here is the continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), one of the reactor models used in engineering. Given the design equation for the CSTR and the cost function for a reactor, the following values are determined; the optimum number of reactors in the reaction train, the volume of each reactor and the total cost.

Brazilian Pepper's Impact On Barrier Island Biodiversity, Grayson Mccormick Jan 2010

Brazilian Pepper's Impact On Barrier Island Biodiversity, Grayson Mccormick

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The Brazilian pepper is an invasive plant responsible for destruction of habitats of species native to Florida. We attempted to measure the impact of the Brazilian pepper on native plants by studying how it affects the biodiversity of Honeymoon Island, one of Florida's barrier islands. For this purpose we determined the population sizes of the Brazilian pepper along with five other species of plants on two quadrats of land laid out in Honeymoon Island State Park. Both Simpson's Index of Diversity and Shannon-Wiener Index were used to estimate the biodiversity and assess the impact of the Brazilian pepper on the …

Population Dynamics Of Free-Roaming Cats In Florida's Lee County, Benjamin Taylor Jan 2010

Population Dynamics Of Free-Roaming Cats In Florida's Lee County, Benjamin Taylor

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

We investigate whether the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program can be effectively used to control the population of free-roaming cats in Florida's Lee County. We do this by estimating the number of cats that must be spayed/neutered in order to keep the population from increasing.

Total Number Of Synapses In The Adult Human Neocortex, Thai Nguyen Jan 2010

Total Number Of Synapses In The Adult Human Neocortex, Thai Nguyen

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The brain is composed of glial cells and neurons where synapses form connections between neurons and other cells. Since synapses are very small, so either a light or electron microscope is required to see them. Unlike other mammals, synapses in the human brain deteriorate rapidly upon death making them difficult to study. This project constructs a simple model for the number of synapses in the human neocortex by age and sex based on the amount of neurons. This hypothetical model can also be used to study the impact of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia that are marked by …

Predator-Prey Modeling, Shaza Hussein Jan 2010

Predator-Prey Modeling, Shaza Hussein

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Predator-prey models are useful and often used in the environmental science field because they allow researchers to both observe the dynamics of animal populations and make predictions as to how they will develop over time. The objective of this project was to create five projections of animal populations based on a simple predator-prey model and explore the trends visible. Each case began with a set of initial conditions that produced different outcomes for the function of the population of rabbits and foxes over an 80 year time span. Using Euler's method, an Excel spreadsheet was developed to produce the values …

The Evolution Of The Family, Benjamin E. Hardisty Jan 2010

The Evolution Of The Family, Benjamin E. Hardisty

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Biological levels of complexity usually begin with the cell and extend forward to tissues, organs, organ systems, organisms, populations, community, and end with ecosystems. The family is a unit of biological complexity is missing. As a result, the evolution of altruism and cooperation from a natural selection perspective has not been produced. In the following chapters, I argue that the family is a unit of biological complexity will illuminate such mysteries as the evolution of eusociality, theories of lifetime fitness—sometimes referred to as Lifetime Reproductive Success (LRS)— cultural learning and its importance as a parallel mechanism of inheritance, finally, the …

Diet Analysis And Community Characteristics Of Lepomis (Sunfish) Species Congregating Near Natural Spring Vents Of The Rainbow River, Florida, Michael S. Sears Jan 2010

Diet Analysis And Community Characteristics Of Lepomis (Sunfish) Species Congregating Near Natural Spring Vents Of The Rainbow River, Florida, Michael S. Sears

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Little is known about the ecology of natural springs and the influence spring vents have on fish populations. This study explores fish population characteristics, such as abundance, diversity, and length distributions near headwater spring vents and downstream away from the spring vents within the Rainbow River, located in central Florida. The population characteristics examined are useful to resource managers when evaluating the possible impacts on fish populations from increased groundwater withdrawals and subsequent lower discharge rates into large spring-fed rivers. Initial field observations led to the hypothesis that Lepomis species feed on organisms expelled from the spring vents. Electrofishing and …

Restoration Of Propeller Scars In Seagrass Meadows Using Sediment Tubes And Design Of A Working Prototype Unmanned Surface Vehicle For Seagrass Studies, Karen Leigh Dreger Jan 2010

Restoration Of Propeller Scars In Seagrass Meadows Using Sediment Tubes And Design Of A Working Prototype Unmanned Surface Vehicle For Seagrass Studies, Karen Leigh Dreger

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Sediment tubes were placed in the unvegetated trenches created in seagrass meadows by boat propellers. The sediment tubes facilitated the natural recovery by stabilizing the sediments and by allowing recruitment of healthy seagrass from the surrounding, undisturbed area. Still images taken of the study sites before and after restoration were assigned a Braun-Blanquet ranking based on the percentage coverage of seagrass. Statistical analysis, using the Mann-Whitney U Test, supported the visual observation that the sediment tubes successfully facilitated natural restoration of the propeller scars. After two years there was an increase in the percent coverage of seagrass at each of …

Patterns Of Indigenous Resilience In The Amazon: A Case Study Of Huaorani Hunting In Ecuador, Flora Lu Jan 2010

Patterns Of Indigenous Resilience In The Amazon: A Case Study Of Huaorani Hunting In Ecuador, Flora Lu

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This paper takes a resilience approach to examining human forager-prey dynamics using as a case study Huaorani hunting in the Ecuadorian Amazon. I compare methodologically similar datasets collected in the same Huaorani villages in 1996-1997 and 2001. Rather than assuming that human hunters simply act on prey species and linearly drive them to depletion, a resilience approach views this dynamic as a complex social and ecological system characterized by feedbacks, nonlinearities, uncertainty, unpredictability, and non-equilibrium dynamics. Using a computer simulation of human foragers and prey (published previously), I highlight how even using relatively simple assumptions, the human forager-prey relationship exhibits …

Tribal-Federal Collaboration In Resource Management, Ellen M. Donoghue, Sara A. Thompson, John C. Bliss Jan 2010

Tribal-Federal Collaboration In Resource Management, Ellen M. Donoghue, Sara A. Thompson, John C. Bliss

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

The increase in collaborative projects involving American Indian tribes and natural resource management agencies in the United States reflects two emergent trends: 1) the use of collaborative approaches between agencies and groups in managing natural resources; and 2) the concurrent increased recognition of American Indian rights, institutionalization of consultation processes, and a general movement of Indian self-determination. This article focuses on institutional mechanisms that bring together tribes and natural resource management agencies in collaborative processes to achieve mutually desired resource management objectives. Using qualitative analysis of data from ten collaborative projects across the United States, we identify attributes of collaborative …

Communally Discerning A Covenant Of Hospitality For The Care Of Children At Westview Boys' Home, Ron Bruner Jan 2010

Communally Discerning A Covenant Of Hospitality For The Care Of Children At Westview Boys' Home, Ron Bruner

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

This project addressed the lack of a covenant defining the practice of hospitality towards children for team members of Westview Boys’ Home. The purpose of the project was to facilitate the creation of such a covenant. The Westview ministry team already claimed hospitality as a strength; the hope was that reframing the ministry around this strength would improve the quality of care for children and the quality of life for the community. Invited into a communal discernment process (the methodology), the ministry team invested weeks in the examination of biblical texts, theological tradition, personal and communal narratives, cultural trends, psychological …

A Human Motion Database: The Cognitive And Parametric Sampling Of Human Motion, Arnab Biswas Jan 2010

A Human Motion Database: The Cognitive And Parametric Sampling Of Human Motion, Arnab Biswas

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Motion databases have a strong potential to guide progress in the field of machine recognition and motion-based animation. Existing databases either have a very loose structure that do not sample the domain according to any controlled methodology or too few action samples which limits their potential to quantitatively evaluate the performance of motion-based techniques. The controlled sampling of the motor domain in the database may lead investigators to identify the fundamental difficulties of motion cognition problems and allow the addressing of these issues in a more objective way. In this thesis, we describe the construction of our Human Motion Database …

Comparing The Genome Expression Profiles Of Verrucomicrobium Sp. Strain Tav2 Cells Grown Under Two Different Oxygen Concentrations, Austin Willis Jan 2010

Comparing The Genome Expression Profiles Of Verrucomicrobium Sp. Strain Tav2 Cells Grown Under Two Different Oxygen Concentrations, Austin Willis

Biology Theses - Archive

Termites are significantly different in their lifestyles and organization but most are linked by the common trait in degrading plant material, whether it is leaf litter, wood, soil or animal waste. They consume the cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin that make up the plant material but rely on a food web consisting of about 270 different phylotypes of microorganisms to break down the biomass into usable nutrients. Isolated from the hindgut of the termite Reticulitermis flavipes, one such organism is Verrucomicrobium sp. strain TAV2. Members of this relatively new bacterium phylum have rigid peptidoglycan with some possessing prosthecae. They have been …

Insights Into The Transmission Of Helitrons And Their Impact On The Genome Architecture Of Myotis Lucifugus, The Little Brown Bat, Jainy Thomas Jan 2010

Insights Into The Transmission Of Helitrons And Their Impact On The Genome Architecture Of Myotis Lucifugus, The Little Brown Bat, Jainy Thomas

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Probably the most dynamic proportion of multicellular eukaryotic genomes is composed of teeming populations of parasitic mobile DNA, called transposable elements (TEs). Helitrons are rolling circle TEs that have a limited distribution among mammals, having been identified only in the genome of the little brown bat, Myotis lucifugus, and a few closely related species. One family of Helitrons, called Helibat, was estimated to make up as much as 3% of the M. lucifugus genome. In addition, Helibat was shown to have captured and amplified the promoter and 5' UTR of a highly conserved single copy gene to >1000 copies. Together …

West Florida Shelf: A Natural Laboratory For The Study Of Ocean Acidification, Pamela Hallock, Lisa L. Robbins, Rebekka Larson, Tanya Beck, Patrick Schwing, Michael Martínez-Colón, Brad Gooch

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Declining oceanic pH and carbonate-ion concentrations are well-known consequences of increased atmospheric and surface-ocean partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2). The possible subject of shifts in seawater carbonate chemistry on biocalcification and survival rates of marine organisms provides questions amenable to both experimental and field study (Kleypas and Langdon, 2006). To date, limited quantitative data exist with which to formalize and test hypotheses regarding such impacts, particularly in continental-shelf settings. The continental shelves of Florida provide an ideal natural laboratory in which to test latitudinal (and temperature and depth) shifts in habitat ranges of calcifying organisms. Both the …

Transposases Are The Most Abundant, Most Ubiquitous Genes In Nature, Ramy Aziz, Mya Breitbart, Robert Edwards Jan 2010

Transposases Are The Most Abundant, Most Ubiquitous Genes In Nature, Ramy Aziz, Mya Breitbart, Robert Edwards

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Genes, like organisms, struggle for existence, and the most successful genes persist and widely disseminate in nature. The unbiased determination of the most successful genes requires access to sequence data from a wide range of phylogenetic taxa and ecosystems, which has finally become achievable thanks to the deluge of genomic and metagenomic sequences. Here, we analyzed 10 million protein-encoding genes and gene tags in sequenced bacterial, archaeal, eukaryotic and viral genomes and metagenomes, and our analysis demonstrates that genes encoding transposases are the most prevalent genes in nature. The finding that these genes, classically considered as selfish genes, outnumber essential …

Share On Role Of An Expanded Inositol Transporter Repertoire In Cryptococcus Neoformans Sexual Reproduction And Virulence, Chaoyang Xue, Tongbao Liu, Lydia Chen, Wenjun Li, Iris Liu, James W. Kronstad, Andreas Seyfang, Joseph Heitman Jan 2010

Share On Role Of An Expanded Inositol Transporter Repertoire In Cryptococcus Neoformans Sexual Reproduction And Virulence, Chaoyang Xue, Tongbao Liu, Lydia Chen, Wenjun Li, Iris Liu, James W. Kronstad, Andreas Seyfang, Joseph Heitman

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii are globally distributed human fungal pathogens and the leading causes of fungal meningitis. Recent studies reveal that myo-inositol is an important factor for fungal sexual reproduction. That C. neoformans can utilize myo-inositol as a sole carbon source and the existence of abundant inositol in the human central nervous system suggest that inositol is important for Cryptococcus development and virulence. In accord with this central importance of inositol, an expanded myo-inositol transporter (ITR) gene family has been identified in Cryptococcus. This gene family contains two phylogenetically distinct groups, with a …

Calbindin-D28k Acts As A Calcium-Dependent Chaperone Suppressing Α-Synuclein Fibrillation In Vitro, Wenbo Zhou, Chunmei Long, Anthony L. Fink, Vladimir N. Uversky Jan 2010

Calbindin-D28k Acts As A Calcium-Dependent Chaperone Suppressing Α-Synuclein Fibrillation In Vitro, Wenbo Zhou, Chunmei Long, Anthony L. Fink, Vladimir N. Uversky

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

α-Synuclein, a natively unfolded protein aggregation which is implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease and several other neurodegenerative diseases, is known to interact with a great number of unrelated proteins. Some of these proteins, such as ß-synuclein and DJ-1, were shown to inhibit α-synuclein aggregation in vitro and in vivo therefore acting as chaperones. Since calbindin-D28K is co-localized with Ca2+ neuronal membrane pumps, and since α-synuclein is also found in the membrane proximity, these two proteins can potentially interact in vivo. Here we show that calbindin-D28K interacts with α-synuclein and inhibits its fibrillation in a calcium-dependent manner, therefore potentially …

Locomotion Of A Running Quadruped Robotic System, Bradley Savon Jan 2010

Locomotion Of A Running Quadruped Robotic System, Bradley Savon

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Very little is known about the locomotion of quadruped robotic systems. In Latin, the term quadruped means 'having four feet'. The robotic system analyzed in this project was a software simulation program modeled after a horse. Simulation data was recorded to resolve the relationship between foot position and impulses required to accelerate or to decelerate the system while trotting. These sets of data were then analyzed in MATLAB to produce graphical representations which allowed for a better understanding of the robot's motion in the simulation environment. A function was fit to the graph of discrete data values measured in the …
