Phma, A Ph-Sensitive Gfp Reporter For Cell Engulfment In Drosophila Embryos, Tissues And Cells, Elane Fishilevich, James A. J. Fitzpatrick, Jonathan S. Minden Jan 2010

Phma, A Ph-Sensitive Gfp Reporter For Cell Engulfment In Drosophila Embryos, Tissues And Cells, Elane Fishilevich, James A. J. Fitzpatrick, Jonathan S. Minden

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Engulfment of apoptotic cells by phagocytosis ensures the removal of unwanted and defective cells. We developed a genetically encoded marker for cell engulfment, pHMA, which consists of the pH-sensitive derivative of GFP, pHluorin, fused to the actin-binding domain of Moesin. In healthy cells of Drosophila embryos and cultured cells, pHMA resides at the cell cortex. In dying cells, pHMA loses its cortical localization and reports a modest decrease in pH. In embryos, the dying cells lose their apical contacts, then move basally and are ultimately engulfed by neighboring cells or macrophages. The cell corpse material is strongly acidified soon after …

Laryngeal Somatosensory Deficits In Parkinson’S Disease: Implications For Speech Respiratory And Phonatory Control, Michael J. Hammer, Steven M. Barlow Jan 2010

Laryngeal Somatosensory Deficits In Parkinson’S Disease: Implications For Speech Respiratory And Phonatory Control, Michael J. Hammer, Steven M. Barlow

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is often associated with substantial impairment of speech respiratory and phonatory control. However, the degree to which these impairments are related to abnormal laryngeal sensory function is unknown. This study examined whether individuals with PD exhibited abnormal and more asymmetric laryngeal somatosensory function compared with healthy controls, and whether these deficits were associated with disease and voice severity. Nineteen PD participants were tested and compared with 18 healthy controls. Testing included endoscopic assessment of laryngeal somatosensory function, with aerodynamic and acoustic assessment of respiratory and phonatory control, and clinical ratings of voice and disease severity. PD participants …

The Care, Custody, And Control Of Incarcerated Women In Ecuador, Jill Harrison, Maureen Norton-Hawk Jan 2010

The Care, Custody, And Control Of Incarcerated Women In Ecuador, Jill Harrison, Maureen Norton-Hawk

Societies Without Borders

This paper presents findings on the custody, care and control of incarcerated women in Ecuador. Although the interrelationship of abuse, poverty, drugs and incarceration is often perceived as a U.S. phenomenon, this paper presents data on a group of structurally and institutionally vulnerable women who are serving mandatory sentences of 6 to 8 years for drug possession and trafficking. Our mixed methodology of survey data, personal interviews, and secondary source materials uncovers some disturbing human rights violations and documents the challenges these incarcerated women face as mothers and inmates.

Identity, Effectiveness, And Newness In Transjudicialism's Coming Of Age, Mark Toufayan Jan 2010

Identity, Effectiveness, And Newness In Transjudicialism's Coming Of Age, Mark Toufayan

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Article attempts to expose and problematize the ideological connections and normative commitments between these theoretical explanations of effectiveness and the pragmatic process-oriented proposals made in the 1990s when the United Nations was searching for ways to renew the discipline of international human rights law while avoiding the dual risks of politicization and Third World normative fragmentation. The liberal theory of effective supranational adjudication was the culmination of decade-long efforts by American liberal internationalists to provide a theoretical basis for and programmatic proposals towards achieving a more "effective" international human rights regime. Their theory aims at structuring the interface between …

Metaphysics And The Charge Of Misanthropy : Ralph Waldo Emerson’S “Circles” As A Cipher For Understanding The Connection Between Robinson Jeffers And Herman Melville, Hunter Stark Jan 2010

Metaphysics And The Charge Of Misanthropy : Ralph Waldo Emerson’S “Circles” As A Cipher For Understanding The Connection Between Robinson Jeffers And Herman Melville, Hunter Stark

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Herman Melville’s and Robinson Jeffers’s metaphysical thoughts reflect Ralph Waldo Emerson’s notion of looking towards Nature for discovery; all three writers’ observations of Nature influence how they see humanity’s place in existence. Both Melville and Jeffers observe Nature decentralizing humanity, which distinguishes their views from Emerson’s. Where Jeffers’s verse sternly voices this message, openly criticizing the anthropocentric viewpoint, Melville utilizes humor, subtly confronting the anthropocentric proponent and downplaying humanity’s power. Jeffers garners the label of misanthrope, whereas Melville’s metaphysical realm in Moby-Dick largely escapes this charge with the masking quality of his humor. Comparing both writers’ texts to an Emersonian …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Previous research evaluated a laboratory strain of Bacillus licheniformis (BL) in a model swine epithelium and found it exerted antiinflammatory effects on Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (Sal)-induced secretion of IL-8. The current investigation evaluated the antiinflammatory actions of Bacillus bacteria available commercially as feed additives for the swine industry. Three isolates were obtained from the product, 2 Bacillus subtilis (BS1 and BS3) and 1 BL (BL2). Swine jejunal epithelial IPEC-J2 cells were seeded into wells on permeable membrane supports and allowed to form confluent monolayers. Treatments included apical pretreatment with BL, BS1, BL2, or BS3 for 17 h without Sal, …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Two years of data (288 steers/yr) were used to determine if sorting cattle by BW into different production systems would decrease overweight carcasses (>431 kg) and hot carcass weight (HCW) variation. At receiving, steers were assigned randomly into sorted or unsorted groups (n = 144 steers/group). Within a group, steers were assigned to 1 of 3 feeding times: 1) calf-fed (entering the feedlot at receiving), 2) summer yearling (grazed during winter and entering the feedlot in May) and 3) fall yearling (grazed during winter and summer and entering the feedlot in September). Unsorted steers were assigned randomly to a …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Common sequence variants within a gene often generate important differences in expression of corresponding mRNAs. This high level of local (allelic) control—or cis modulation—rivals that produced by gene targeting, but expression is titrated finely over a range of levels. We are interested in exploiting this allelic variation to study gene function and downstream consequences of differences in expression dosage. We have used several bioinformatics and molecular approaches to estimate error rates in the discovery of cis modulation and to analyze some of the biological and technical confounds that contribute to the variation in gene expression profiling. Our analysis of SNPs …

Stress is a major risk factor for numerous neuropsychiatric diseases. However, susceptibility to stress and the qualitative nature of stress effects on behavior differ markedly among individuals. This is partly because of the moderating influence of genetic factors. Inbred mouse strains provide a relatively stable and restricted range of genetic and environmental variability that is valuable for disentangling gene–stress interactions. Here, we screened a panel of inbred strains for anxiety- and depression-related phenotypes at baseline (trait) and after exposure to repeated restraint. Two strains, DBA/2J and C57BL/6J, differed in trait and restraint-induced anxiety-related

behavior (dark/light exploration, elevated plus maze). Gene …

Srebp Pathway Genes As Candidate Markers In Country Ham Production, Benedicte Renaville, Kimberly L. Glenn, Benny E. Mote, Bin Fan, Kenneth J. Stalder, Max F. Rothschild

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Country hams are dry-cured products from the Southeastern region of the USA. This high value product requires quality fresh meat to avoid later processing problems. The marker SREBF1 is a transcription factor involved in the regulation of fatty acid synthesis and antioxidative enzyme transcription. The SREBF1 gene and its regulators, SCAP and MBTPS1, were investigated for associations with several meat quality traits in country hams. After single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) identification, PCR-RFLP tests were designed for one polymorphism in each of the three investigated genes. Meat quality and physical traits were collected on 299 fresh hams. Significant associations were …

Cognitive Representation In Transitive Inference: A Comparison Of Four Corvid Species, Alan B. Bond, Cynthia A. Wei, Alan C. Kamil

Alan Bond Publications

During operant transitive inference experiments, subjects are trained on adjacent stimulus pairs in an implicit linear hierarchy in which responses to higher ranked stimuli are rewarded. Two contrasting forms of cognitive representation are often used to explain resulting choice behavior. Associative representation is based on memory for the reward history of each stimulus. Relational representation depends on memory for the context in which stimuli have been presented. Natural history characteristics that require accurate configural memory, such as social complexity or reliance on cached food, should tend to promote greater use of relational representation. To test this hypothesis, four corvid species …

Ducks, Geese, And Swans Of The World, Revised Edition [Complete Work], Paul A. Johnsgard

Ducks, Geese, and Swans of the World by Paul A. Johnsgard

The only one-volume comprehensive survey of the family Anatidae available in English, this book combines lavish illustration with information on the natural history, distribution and status, and identification of all the species.

After an introductory discussion of the thirteen tribes of Anatidae, separate accounts follow for each of the nearly 150 recognized species. These include scientific and vernacular names (in French, German, and Spanish as well as English), descriptions of the distribution of all recognized subspecies, selected weights and measurements, and identification criteria for both sexes and various age classes. The “Natural History” section of each species account considers habitats, …

Ducks, Geese, And Swans Of The World: Tribe Merganettini (Torrent Duck), Paul A. Johnsgard

Ducks, Geese, and Swans of the World by Paul A. Johnsgard

Torrent Duck
This remarkable stream-dwelling duck of the Andean mountains is certainly one of the most specialized of all waterfowl, and in part its anatomical and behavioral specializations have obscured its basic relationships, which appear to be with either the perching ducks or the dabbling ducks. In the absence of definitive evidence, it seems reasonable to maintain a separate tribe for this species, which exists as a series of relatively isolated populations between Venezuela and Tierra del Fuego that vary greatly in male plumage characteristics. Torrent ducks are essentially cavity- or ledge-nesting forms, although only a few nests have been …

Ducks, Geese, and Swans of the World by Paul A. Johnsgard

The following index is limited to the species of Anatidae; species of other bird families are not indexed, nor are subspecies included. However, vernacular names applied to certain subspecies that sometimes are considered full species are included, as are some generic names that are not utilized in this book but which are still sometimes applied to particular species or species groups. Complete indexing is limited to the entries that correspond to the vernacular names utilized in this book; in these cases the primary species account is indicated in italics. Other vernacular or scientific names are indexed to the section of …

Chapter 6 - Humanizing Academic Accountability: Embedded Assessment Gets At The Heart Of Teaching And Learning, Peggy Liggit Jan 2010

Chapter 6 - Humanizing Academic Accountability: Embedded Assessment Gets At The Heart Of Teaching And Learning, Peggy Liggit

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU

Assessment of student learning and academic program review are requirements for institutional accreditation. Faculty tend to "push back" against this work because it feels more like a mandate for accountability rather than a natural part of instruction. In this chapter, I describe the ways in which embedded assessment served within our program documentation system, and I provide examples of what this type of assessment looks like from the work our department had accomplished in the last year. My intention here is to pose the idea of using embedded assessment as an alternative model, or a supplement to the traditional models, …
