Computer-Based Brief Motivational Intervention For Medication Adherence In Schizophrenia, Robert Kender Jan 2010

Computer-Based Brief Motivational Intervention For Medication Adherence In Schizophrenia, Robert Kender

Wayne State University Dissertations

Despite the documented efficacy of medication treatments for individuals suffering from schizophrenia, many individuals suffering from this disorder are unable or unwilling to adhere to their medication regimen. This may be due to the inability of providers to differentially address the individual motivation levels of their patients. The few interventions that have shown promise are both costly and difficult to disseminate. The current study is a randomized controlled trial which utilizes motivational interviewing, delivered with an interactive computer based delivery system to address attitudes about adherence. Feasibility, acceptability and efficacy were examined as outcomes. While both feasibility and efficacy were …

Comparison Of Affective Analgesia And Conditioned Place Preference Following Cholinergic Activation Of, Elena Schifirnet Jan 2010

Comparison Of Affective Analgesia And Conditioned Place Preference Following Cholinergic Activation Of, Elena Schifirnet

Wayne State University Dissertations

Activation of the dopaminergic mesolimbic reward circuitry that originates in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) is postulated to preferentially suppress affective reactions to noxious stimuli (affective analgesia, AA). VTA dopamine neurons are activated via cholinergic inputs, and we have observed that microinjections of the acetylcholine agonist carbachol suppressed vocalizations of rats that occur following administration of brief (1 sec) tail-shocks (vocalization afterdischarges = VAD). VADs are a validated rodent model of pain affect. In addition, the capacity of carbachol to support reinforcement appears to be regionally dependent within VTA. Ikemoto and Wise (2002) reported that carbachol was self-administered in the …

Induction And Regulation Of Autophagy By Novel Prenylation Inhibitors In Sts-26t Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor (Mpnst) Cells, Komal Madhukar Sane

Wayne State University Dissertations

Prenylation pathways have been targeted via several different compounds that inhibit farnesyl transferase (FTase) and/or geranylgeranyl transferase (GGTase) enzymes in many cellular and animal models of cancer. Some of these have also been evaluated in clinical trials with limited success. Multiple mechanisms of action have been elucidated for such compounds, including cell cycle arrest, proteasome inhibition, apoptosis and most recently, autophagy. However, there is still an urgent need of effective agents of this class of anti-tumor therapeutics. In this dissertation, I sought to delve into this issue by characterizing our novel prenylation inhibitors and their potential as anti-tumor agents. Novel …

Looking At A More Comprehensive Picture Of Reading As Enacted By Second-Grade Readers, Glorianne Lopata-Prosperi Jan 2010

Looking At A More Comprehensive Picture Of Reading As Enacted By Second-Grade Readers, Glorianne Lopata-Prosperi

Wayne State University Dissertations

This study examined the reading of fiction and nonfiction text by second grade readers. A comparison of their reading processes, comprehension, and perceptions are highlighted. The study was conducted given the changing demands of reading in the 21st century and the current literacy experiences typically presented in elementary schools.

The study investigated three questions: For second-grade readers, some with more exposure to nonfiction text and some with less: 1) What are the differences, if any, in their reading processes? 2) What differences, if any, occur in their comprehension? and 3) What differences, if any, are there in participant's perceptions of …

A Candidate Subspecies Discrimination System Involving A Vomeronasal Receptor Gene With Different Alleles Fixed In M. M. Domesticus And M. M. Musculus, Robert C. Karn, Janet M. Young, Christina M. Laukaitis Jan 2010

A Candidate Subspecies Discrimination System Involving A Vomeronasal Receptor Gene With Different Alleles Fixed In M. M. Domesticus And M. M. Musculus, Robert C. Karn, Janet M. Young, Christina M. Laukaitis

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Assortative mating, a potentially efficient prezygotic reproductive barrier, may prevent loss of genetic potential by avoiding the production of unfit hybrids (i.e., because of hybrid infertility or hybrid breakdown) that occur at regions of secondary contact between incipient species. In the case of the mouse hybrid zone, where two subspecies of Mus musculus (M. m. domesticus and M. m. musculus) meet and exchange genes to a limited extent, assortative mating requires a means of subspecies recognition. We based the work reported here on the hypothesis that, if there is a pheromone sufficiently diverged between M. m. domesticus and …

Aristotle On Pure And Simple Stuff, Tiberiu Popa Jan 2010

Aristotle On Pure And Simple Stuff, Tiberiu Popa

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

A view that has been entertained traditionally by Aristotelian scholars is that the four simple bodies in the sublunary world (earth, water, air, and fire) cannot exist independently; a consequence of this view is the general belief that all homoeomers or uniform bodies have to be compounds. i would like to suggest that, while Aristotle consistently maintains that the four basic opposites (hot, cold, moist, dry) cannot exist independently, this is not always the case with the four simple bodies. My central claim is that Meteorology IV – Aristotle’s ‘chemical treatise’ – provides evidence that, contrary to the traditional interpretation …

Comparative Evaluation Of Clinical Samples From Naturally Infected Dogs For Early Detection Of Canine Distemper Virus, Muhammad Zubair Shabbir, Masood Rabbani, Arfan Ahmad, Ali̇ Ahmed, Khushi Muhammad, Ikram Anwar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Early detection of canine distemper (CD) is critical for appropriate and timely treatment. The present study included 45 suspected cases with respiratory signs for a comparative evaluation of clinical samples in the early detection of canine distemper virus (CDV). Thirty-four dogs exhibited digestive system involvement, but none showed any neurological symptoms. Clinical progression of CD, based on age, sex, vaccination status, disease, and clinical findings, was observed. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to detect viral nucleoprotein RNA in plasma, conjunctival and nasal swabs. Only 10 dogs were positive for CDV infection. Among the 45 dogs, CDV RNA …

Understanding And Regulating The Sport Of Mixed Martial Arts, Brendan S. Maher Jan 2010

Understanding And Regulating The Sport Of Mixed Martial Arts, Brendan S. Maher

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The past fifteen years have seen the emergence of a new sport in America and around the world: mixed martial arts ("MMA'). MMA is an interdisciplinary combat sport where participants engage in and combine a variety of fighting disciplines (e.g., kickboxing, wrestling, karate, jiu-jitsu, and so on) in a single match. In this Article, Professor Maher examines and analyzes the sport's evolution, tracing it from its shaggy, brutish beginnings to its current incarnation; articulates a pragmatic and comparative theory of sporting legitimacy; reviews and describes the state-based and administrative nature of MMA regulation; and highlights two reform possibilities of interest …

Free Speech Or Trademark Protections: Do Advocacy Groups And Government Agencies Deserve Extra Protection, Max Landaw

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Since October 2009, the American judicial system has been posed with yet another lawsuit in the oft recurring battle between trademark protections and right to freedom of expression, specifically the right to parody. The Yes Men, a parody troop, in a stunt which confused numerous news outlets, held a press conference as "members" of the United States Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber responded by suing the Yes Men for, amongst other causes of action, trademark infringement pursuant to the Lanham Act. This note will first analyze the history of the debate between the conflicting right of free expression and consumer …

Prediction Of Prion Protein Genotype And Association Of This Genotype With Lamb Performance Traits Of Suffolk Sheep, R. M. Sawalha, Beatrize Villanueva, S. Brotherstone, P. L. Rogers, R. M. Lewis Jan 2010

Prediction Of Prion Protein Genotype And Association Of This Genotype With Lamb Performance Traits Of Suffolk Sheep, R. M. Sawalha, Beatrize Villanueva, S. Brotherstone, P. L. Rogers, R. M. Lewis

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The association of the prion protein (PrP) gene with susceptibility to scrapie has formed the basis of selection programs aimed at eradicating the disease from sheep populations. Animals are genotyped for the PrP gene and those with the less susceptible genotypes are selected. The objectives of this study were to determine the effectiveness of predicting PrP genotypes by using information from relatives and to investigate the association of the PrP genotype with lamb performance traits in Suffolk sheep. Data were obtained from a scrapie-affected flock maintained in Scotland. A total of 643 were animals genotyped at codon 171 of the …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Enteric disease and immune challenge are processes that have detrimental effects on the growth performance of young swine. The current study tested the hypothesis that salmonella-induced enteric disease would perturb the endocrine growth axis in a serovar-dependent fashion. Specifically, we evaluated the effects of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (Typhimurium) and serovar Choleraesuis (Choleraesuis) on critical regulatory components of growth in young swine. Weaned pigs were housed 2 per pen with ad libitum access to feed and water in a 14-d experiment. Pigs were then repeatedly fed 108 cfu of either Choleraesuis or Typhimurium in dough balls, with control pigs receiving …

Environmental And Endogenous Factors Influencing Emigration In Juvenile Anadromous Alewives, Benjamin I. Gahagan, Eric T. Schultz, Katie E. Gherard

EEB Articles

We analyzed juvenile anadromous alewife migration at Bride Lake, a coastal lake in Connecticut, during summer 2006 and found that migration on 24-hour and seasonal timescales was influenced by conditions of the environment and characteristics of the individual. To identify environmental cues of juvenile migration, we continuously video recorded fish at the lake outflow and employed information-theoretic model selection to identify the best predictors of daily migration rate. More than 80% of the approximately 320,000 juveniles that migrated from mid-June to mid-August departed in three pulses lasting one or two days. Pulses of migration were associated with precipitation events, transient …

The Contemporary “Fist Inside The Velvet Glove”: Employer Captive Audience Meetings Under The Nlra, Paul M. Secunda Jan 2010

The Contemporary “Fist Inside The Velvet Glove”: Employer Captive Audience Meetings Under The Nlra, Paul M. Secunda

Faculty Publications

One of the more effective anti-union techniques used by employers during labor organizational campaigns is the holding of employee captive audience meetings. Employees, in the midst of deciding whether or not to join a union, are compelled to attend an assembly where management has a one-way conversation with them about the evils of unionism. These meetings occur during working hours, when the employer is best able to exert its economic authority over employees and to play on fears of job loss if employees vote for the union.

While employees are free to leave these meetings in the formal sense, they …

Constitutional Safety Valve: The Privileges Or Immunities Clause And Status Regimes In A Federalist System, Bruce E. Boyden Jan 2010

Constitutional Safety Valve: The Privileges Or Immunities Clause And Status Regimes In A Federalist System, Bruce E. Boyden

Faculty Publications

The American Constitution was born flawed: it failed to provide a mechanism for resolving entrenched differences in the social status regimes between states. This Article argues that part of the purpose of the Privileges or Immunities Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment was to correct that flaw. The Privileges or Immunities Clause was the culmination of a long antebellum debate over whether southern states had to respect the rights of northern black citizens as they traveled. The Clause achieves this goal by requiring states in certain circumstances to respect the status determinations of other states when the citizens of those other …
