Environmental And Endogenous Factors Influencing Emigration In Juvenile Anadromous Alewives, Benjamin I. Gahagan, Eric T. Schultz, Katie E. Gherard
EEB Articles
We analyzed juvenile anadromous alewife migration at Bride Lake, a coastal lake in Connecticut, during summer 2006 and found that migration on 24-hour and seasonal timescales was influenced by conditions of the environment and characteristics of the individual. To identify environmental cues of juvenile migration, we continuously video recorded fish at the lake outflow and employed information-theoretic model selection to identify the best predictors of daily migration rate. More than 80% of the approximately 320,000 juveniles that migrated from mid-June to mid-August departed in three pulses lasting one or two days. Pulses of migration were associated with precipitation events, transient …

The Contemporary “Fist Inside The Velvet Glove”: Employer Captive Audience Meetings Under The Nlra, Paul M. Secunda
The Contemporary “Fist Inside The Velvet Glove”: Employer Captive Audience Meetings Under The Nlra, Paul M. Secunda
Faculty Publications
One of the more effective anti-union techniques used by employers during labor organizational campaigns is the holding of employee captive audience meetings. Employees, in the midst of deciding whether or not to join a union, are compelled to attend an assembly where management has a one-way conversation with them about the evils of unionism. These meetings occur during working hours, when the employer is best able to exert its economic authority over employees and to play on fears of job loss if employees vote for the union.
While employees are free to leave these meetings in the formal sense, they …
Constitutional Safety Valve: The Privileges Or Immunities Clause And Status Regimes In A Federalist System, Bruce E. Boyden
Constitutional Safety Valve: The Privileges Or Immunities Clause And Status Regimes In A Federalist System, Bruce E. Boyden
Faculty Publications
The American Constitution was born flawed: it failed to provide a mechanism for resolving entrenched differences in the social status regimes between states. This Article argues that part of the purpose of the Privileges or Immunities Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment was to correct that flaw. The Privileges or Immunities Clause was the culmination of a long antebellum debate over whether southern states had to respect the rights of northern black citizens as they traveled. The Clause achieves this goal by requiring states in certain circumstances to respect the status determinations of other states when the citizens of those other …

Africentrism And Africentric Rituals: Their Role In Jamaican Male Motivation To Pursue Higher Education, Totlyn A. Oliver
Africentrism And Africentric Rituals: Their Role In Jamaican Male Motivation To Pursue Higher Education, Totlyn A. Oliver
Contemporary Issues in Juvenile Justice
This academic research presents the case for Africentrism and its attendant rituals for the African Diaspora to aid in the motivation and inspiration factor in the male's choice to pursue higher education in Jamaica. The paper discussed Africentric rites of passage against the background of pre-emancipation and post-emancipation education in Jamaica. It also analyzed the current educational system for male nationals along with the implications for applying Africentrism to theories and practice of education for male stu-dents. The major concern precipitating this study was the low levels of male enrolment in institutions of higher learning, as the female population far …

Search Query Privacy: The Problem Of Anonymization, Ron A. Dolin
Search Query Privacy: The Problem Of Anonymization, Ron A. Dolin
UC Law Science and Technology Journal
Search queries may reveal quite sensitive information about the querier. Even though many queries are not directly associated with a particular person, it has been argued that the IP addresses and cookies of the users can often be sufficient to figure out who the querier is, especially if tied to information from ISPs regarding IP address assignments at the time of the relevant query. Given that the queries have been subject to discovery both by various governments and third parties, there has been great concern for how to keep such queries private. A typical approach to such privacy legislation, especially …
Reach Through Royalties As A Workaround For Patent Exhaustion, Patrick Hagan
Reach Through Royalties As A Workaround For Patent Exhaustion, Patrick Hagan
UC Law Science and Technology Journal
Reach through royalties (RTRs) allow companies that license patented research tools to profit from inventions created by others using these tools. Support for RTRs is split; some disfavor them for their potential anti-commons effects, while others believe RTRs provide important services, such as research tool valuation. This piece argues that RTRs should be allowed, outlining their current use in the United States and the financial implications for both tool licensers and researchers.

“Desarreglos Propios Del Sexo”: Advertising Menstrual Disorders And Regulating Women In Fin-De-Siglo Spain, Robin Ragan
Decimonónica
The year is 1893. Dr. Velázquez declares in Madrid that a fourth if not half of all women suffer from it (qtd. in Aldaraca, “The Medical” 410). Remedies range from Dr. Weir Mitchell’s rest cure and marriage (read sex) to the use of contraptions like ovary compressors or leeches to the anus. Of course, I am referring to the disease hysteria. The fin-de-siglo medical field became obsessed with women’s “nervous conditions” and the apparent epidemic of hysteria. I am inserting my research into a voluminous, intriguing body of criticism that looks at hysteria as a cultural metaphor revealed in nineteenth- …
