Spinal arteriovenous malformations is a rare disease. The initial signs are usually in the forms of nonspecific sensory symptoms such as pains and parasthesia; therefore, it is difficult to conclusively diagnose this disease. Here, we report the case of a 30-year-old woman who suffered from a sudden weakness in the 4 limbs 15 years ago. The symptoms subsided after supportive care; she was discharged from a local hospital without further follow ups. Approximately 5 years ago, she had a sudden attack of pains in her left shoulder. The symptoms rapidly progressed to paralysis of the 4 limbs. She was sent …

Bladder compliance expresses the relationship between bladder volume and detrusor pressure and is generally regarded as a measure of bladder stiffness or distensibility. Based on the varied selection criteria during the urodynamic study, differences in bladder compliance often exist. The objective of this study was to provide reference ranges for ”normal” variability in bladder compliance among healthy subjects.A total of twenty-four healthy subjects, twelve men and twelve women with mean age of 25.2 years and estimated maximal capacity (EMC) of 393 ml, were enrolled in this study. Background/Purpose: Disturbances in sleep and health-related quality of life (HRQL) are common in hemodialysis patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of high voltage galvanic stimulation (HVGS) on blood chemistry, sleeping quality and HRQL among hemodialysis patients.Methods: This is an experimental one way repeated measure design. We enrolled 19 patients from a major hemodialysis center. All patients underwent whole body FT-9000 HVGS therapy, 20 minutes per session, three times per week, for 12 weeks. This study investigated whether a stroke patient with left hemianopsia, which was confirmed by the perimetric test, may also have hemineglect. The relationship between hemineglect and hemianopia in patients with right hemispheric stroke was evaluated. Eleven subjects with left unilateral neglect underwent three testing sessions separated in time. The three test sessions, including cancellation and static perimetric tests, were performed at approximately 3 months, 4 months, and 7 months post the onset of the stroke. Background: Retroperitoneal liposarcoma is one of the common soft-tissue tumors that occur in the retroperitoneal cavity. It often invades adjacent structures and causes symptoms of gastrointestinal or urinary tract infection. However, it rarely causes sciatica by compressing the lumbosarcral nerve roots. A recent reviewarticle of the domestic literatures revealed that this is the first casereport on sciatica caused by retroperitoneal liposarcoma.Case: We present the case of a 29-year-old man who complained of left knee pain for half a year. Although health promotion issues specific to people with physical disabilities have received much attention in the last ten years, related clinical trials studying the efficacy and viability of these programs are lacking. In this pilot study, we implemented a short-term health promotion intervention for overweight/obese post-polio survivors. The study design included a three-month intervention containing exercise, diet education and health behavior modification, a before-and-after comparison, and a 12-month follow-up.Thirty one subjects were enrolled. Inflationary cosmology has proven to be the most successful at predicting the properties of the anisotropies observed in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In this essay we show that quantum field renormalization significantly influences the generation of primordial perturbations and hence the expected measurable imprint of cosmological inflation on the CMB. However, the new predictions remain in agreement with observation, and in fact favor the simplest forms of inflation. In the near future, observations of the influence of gravitational waves from the early universe on the CMB will test our new predictions. © 2009 World Scientific Publishing Company.

W. B. Yeats’s play Calvary (1920) may have inspired or influenced Jeffers’s Dear Judas (1928). Both use the Easter story to explore not only with betrayal and redemption, but also archetypes of betrayer and savior, solitary hero and communal man. Both examine the psychology of the participants in order to evoke the meaning of the events and their importance in western culture. Yeats conceived of his play as an illustration of the distinction in his visionary psychology between objective men who exist in relation to others and subjective men who exist for themselves. Background: Previously we have shown that B cell receptor (BCR) expression and B cell receptor signaling pathways are important for the basal growth of B lymphoma cells. In particular we have shown that the activation of Syk, a non-src family protein tyrosine kinase and the mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPK), ERK and JNK that mediate BCR signals are required for the constitutive growth of B lymphoma cells. Since src family protein tyrosine kinases (SFKs) like Lyn are known to be needed for the phosphorylation of BCR co-receptors, Ig-alpha and Ig-beta, we hypothesized that one or more SFKs will be constitutively …

Atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gasses (GHG) have increased dramatically followed by an increase in global average temperature. In order to avoid negative potential outcomes of global warming, countries have adopted the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change that has so far been ratified by 192 countries. Wind washing has been identified as a potentially significant issue regarding energy, demand, comfort, and humidity in some two-story Florida homes. In its most common configuration, wind washing occurs when attic spaces over first-floor portions of the home abut the second story, and the floor cavity of the second story is open to that attic space. Wind blowing into attic vents can push hot attic air into the inter-story floor cavity, bypassing the typical thermal boundaries of the building and introducing considerable heat into the house. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe deaf college students’ perceptions of their experiences learning academic English literacy vis à vis their teachers. The study examined the narrated academic English literacy acquisition experiences and practices of 11 deaf and hard-of-hearing students at a hearing university with a large deaf student population. Through paradigmatic analysis of narrative data, the study located common themes, which revealed students’ perceptions of academic English literacy acquisition, particularly with regard to their teachers.
