Model Learning Outcomes For Introductory Rural Sociology: A Proposal And Rationale, Jennifer Steele Dec 2009

Model Learning Outcomes For Introductory Rural Sociology: A Proposal And Rationale, Jennifer Steele

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

While rural sociologists have demonstrated their commitment to sharing ideas about teaching approaches and methods, they have given less systematic attention to the content of introductory rural sociology and its connections to the field’s mission of improving rural well-being. The purpose of this note is to make a case for developing model learning outcomes for introductory rural sociology and to present an organizing framework and sample outcomes for initiating discussion. First, a rationale for using learning outcomes as the means of sharing professional expectations is presented. Next, the methods used to arrive at a proposed organizational framework are described. It …

Assessing Introductory Rural Sociology, Joseph F. Donnermeyer, Benjamin Gray

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This article reports on the results of an assessment of an introductory rural sociology course offered at two land-grant universities, which are very different in size. These institutions are North Carolina A&T State University and The Ohio State University. The authors use similar assessment tools, including an embedded pre and post test of knowledge gained, students’ written comments to open-ended questions administered at the end of term about the quality of the class and the instructors, and the traditional, standardized Student Evaluation of Instruction, an instrument used across many universities. In addition, at OSU, a small group diagnostic of students …

The Mobile Bay Watershed Project: An Experiment In Collaborative Learning About The Social Construction Of Environmental And Natural Resource Problems, Michelle Worosz

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

A collaborative research project was developed for a multidisciplinary class of advanced undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in Sociology of Natural Resources and the Environment. The goals of the project were to determine the feasibility of offering an experiential learning opportunity and to explore its usefulness in enhancing students’ thinking about the social constructedness of natural resource and environmental (NRE) problems. The context was the Mobile Bay watershed, which is the site of a variety of concerns such as land use, pollution, and habitat destruction. To explore these types of problems, students completed a series of assignments including a media …

Does Patronage Still Drive Politics For The Rural Poor In The Developing World? A Comparative Perspective From The Livestock Sector, David K. Leonard, Jennifer Brass, Michael Nelson, Sophal Ear, Dan Fahey, Tasha Fairfield, Martha Johnson Gning, Michael Halderman, Brendan Mcsherry, Devra Coren Moehler, Wilson Prichard, Robin L. Turner, Tuong Vu, Jeroen Dijkman

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Is the analysis of patron–client networks still important to the understanding of developing country politics or has it now been overtaken by a focus on ‘social capital’? Drawing on seventeen country studies of the political environment for livestock policy in poor countries, this article concludes that although the nature of patronage has changed significantly, it remains highly relevant to the ways peasant interests are treated. Peasant populations were found either to have no clear connection to their political leaders or to be controlled by political clientage. Furthermore, communities ‘free’ of patron–client ties to the centre generally are not better represented …

Beyond Trademark Use, Stacey Dogan Dec 2009

Beyond Trademark Use, Stacey Dogan

Faculty Scholarship

For several years now, the question of “trademark use” has taken center stage in the debate over trademark liability of online intermediaries. Doctrinally, the debate addresses whether the Lanham Act places any limit on the types of “use” of trademarks that can subject one to a claim of infringement. The real conflict, however, has occurred at the normative level: whatever the Lanham Act says or does not say about trademark use, should trademark law limit the definition of infringement to situations in which the defendant has used the mark to brand its own products?

The Second Circuit appears to have …

Environmental Strategies And Their Motives And Results In Slovenian Business Practice, Tomaž Čater, Janez Prašnikar, Barbara Čater Dec 2009

Environmental Strategies And Their Motives And Results In Slovenian Business Practice, Tomaž Čater, Janez Prašnikar, Barbara Čater

Economic and Business Review

The results of a survey on 153 Slovenian manufacturing companies show that companies implement environmental strategies primarily as a refl ection of the commitment of their top management, followed by public concern, regulatory forces and expected competitive advantage. They report a relatively high level of implementation of the corporate environmental strategy while, among functional strategies, environmental issues are most commonly included in the production and marketing strategies, followed by purchasing and personnel strategies. Large companies develop and execute environmental strategies to a greater extent than small companies. The results also reveal a positive but very weak relationship between environmental strategies …

Active Ageing On The Company Level: The Theory Vs. The Day-To-Day Practice In Slovenia, Jana Žnidaršič, Vlado Dimovski Dec 2009

Active Ageing On The Company Level: The Theory Vs. The Day-To-Day Practice In Slovenia, Jana Žnidaršič, Vlado Dimovski

Economic and Business Review

The need to improve the labour market participation of older people has received ever greater attention in recent years, especially in view of the significant demographic changes the European Union will undergo due to population ageing. Besides the macroeconomic level, implications of this trend are strongly seen at the company level, particularly when it comes to managing the ageing workforce. Companies are thus introducing new approaches, policies and instruments which seek to foster the higher employment rates of the elderly by implementing the active-ageing concept in business and HRM practice. The paper aims to highlight the development of active-ageing initiatives …

Cutting As A Continuous Business Process, Peter Trkman, Jure Erjavec, Miro Gradišar Dec 2009

Cutting As A Continuous Business Process, Peter Trkman, Jure Erjavec, Miro Gradišar

Economic and Business Review

A review of state-of-the-art methods for cutting stock problem optimisation shows that the current methods lead to near-optimum results for the instantaneous optimisation of trim loss. Further optimisation of this activity would not bring a considerable improvement. Therefore, the paper treats cutting stock as a continuous business process and not as an isolated activity. An exact method for a general one-dimensional cutting stock problem is presented and tested. The method is mainly suitable for smaller orders. It is then applied to continuous cutting and used to develop a method for assessing cutting costs in consecutive time periods. The modified method …

Behavioural Aspects Influencing The Performance Of Turkish Fund Managers, Omar Masood, Bruno S. Sergi Dec 2009

Behavioural Aspects Influencing The Performance Of Turkish Fund Managers, Omar Masood, Bruno S. Sergi

Economic and Business Review

Using original survey data collected by the authors in 2005 we investigate the determinants of Turkish fund managers’ performance as measured by the number of clients that a fund manager has, the number of investment funds that the manager is responsible for and the size of the manager’s portfolio. All three measures of Turkish fund manager performance systematically vary with fund manager characteristics. This is consistent with Chevalier and Ellison’s (1999) finding for the USA that some managers are better than others. Further, the number of training courses attended by a manager and years of experience (in a particular organisation …

The Value Of Sharing Advance Capacity Information Under “Zero-Full” Supply Capacity Availability, Marko Jakšič, Borut Rusjan Dec 2009

The Value Of Sharing Advance Capacity Information Under “Zero-Full” Supply Capacity Availability, Marko Jakšič, Borut Rusjan

Economic and Business Review

The importance of sharing information within modern supply chains has been established by both practitioners and researchers. Accurate and timely information helps firms effectively reduce the uncertainties of a volatile and uncertain business environment. We model periodic review, single-item, stochastic demand and stochastic supply where, in a given period, supply is either available or completely unavailable. In addition, a supply chain member has the ability to obtain advance capacity information (‘ACI’) about the future supply capacity availability. We show that the optimal ordering policy is a base stock policy with the optimal base stock level being a function of future …
