Hyperspectral Clustering And Unmixing Of Satellite Imagery For The Study Of Complex Society State Formation, Justin Kwong Nov 2009

Hyperspectral Clustering And Unmixing Of Satellite Imagery For The Study Of Complex Society State Formation, Justin Kwong

Theses

This project is an application of remote sensing techniques to the field of archaeology. Clustering and unmixing algorithms are applied to hyperspectral Hyperion imagery over Oaxaca, Mexico. Oaxaca is the birthplace of the Zapotec civilization, the earliest state-level society in Mesoamerica. A passionate debate is ongoing over whether the Zapotecs' evolution was environmentally deterministic or socioeconomic. Previous archaeological remote sensing has focused on the difficult tasks of feature detection using low spatial resolution imagery or visual inspection of spectral data. This project attempts to learn about a civilization on the macro level, using unsupervised land classification techniques. Overlapping 158 band …

Comparison Of Line-Peak And Line-Scanning Excitation In Two-Color Laser-Induced-Fluorescence Thermometry Of Oh, Stanislav Kostka, Sukesh Roy, Patrick J. Lakusta, Terrence Meyer, Michael W. Renfro, James R. Gord, Richard D. Branam Nov 2009

Comparison Of Line-Peak And Line-Scanning Excitation In Two-Color Laser-Induced-Fluorescence Thermometry Of Oh, Stanislav Kostka, Sukesh Roy, Patrick J. Lakusta, Terrence Meyer, Michael W. Renfro, James R. Gord, Richard D. Branam

Faculty Publications

Two-line laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) thermometry is commonly employed to generate instantaneous planar maps of temperature in unsteady flames. The use of line scanning to extract the ratio of integrated intensities is less common because it precludes instantaneous measurements. Recent advances in the energy output of high-speed, ultraviolet, optical parameter oscillators have made possible the rapid scanning of molecular rovibrational transitions and, hence, the potential to extract information on gas-phase temperatures. In the current study, two-line OH LIF thermometry is performed in a well-calibrated reacting flow for the purpose of comparing the relative accuracy of various line-pair selections from the literature and …

Comparison Of Alpha-Element-Enhanced Simple Stellar Population Models With Milky Way Globular Clusters, Hyun Chul Lee, Guy Worthey, Aaron Dotter Nov 2009

Comparison Of Alpha-Element-Enhanced Simple Stellar Population Models With Milky Way Globular Clusters, Hyun Chul Lee, Guy Worthey, Aaron Dotter

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present simple stellar population (SSP) models with scaled-solar and α-element-enhanced abundances. The SSP models are based on the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database, our library of synthetic stellar spectra, and a detailed systematic variation of horizontal-branch (HB) morphology with age and metallicity. In order to test the relative importance of a variety of SSP model ingredients, we compare our SSP models with integrated spectra of 41 Milky Way globular clusters (MWGCs) from Schiavon etal. Using the Mg b and Ca4227 indices, we confirm that Mg and Ca are enhanced by about +0.4 and +0.2dex, respectively, in agreement with results from …

Towards Sustainable Energy: Synthesis Of Green Fuels With Integrated Carbon Capture And Storage (Ccs), Ah-Hyung Alissa Park Nov 2009

Towards Sustainable Energy: Synthesis Of Green Fuels With Integrated Carbon Capture And Storage (Ccs), Ah-Hyung Alissa Park

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

A large percentage of the United States energy demands are currently met using energy sources imported from politically unstable parts of the world. Such imports pose a potential threat to our national security and therefore, finding an alternative source to supply our country’s ever growing energy demand is critical. The synthesis of green fuels from domestic carboneous sources such as coal, biomass and municipal solid wastes are particularly attractive, particularly if it is integrated with the carbon capture and storage (CCS) schemes in order to achieve both energy and environment sustainability.

Predictions of global energy usage suggest a continued increase …

Tracing The Archetypal Academic Librarian, Stephen E. Bales Nov 2009

Tracing The Archetypal Academic Librarian, Stephen E. Bales

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper analyzes the available evidence to develop a model of the archetypal academic librarian. It compares three periods to do so: (1) pre-Alexandrian Mesopotamian information institutions, focusing on the seventh century BCE Library of Assurbanipal (considered by many scholars to be the first universal or national library), (2) the Great Library of Alexandria (hereafter referred to as “the Library”), and (3) the twenty-first century American academic library. While the basic functions of the librarian have remained constant over thousands of years, one critical element, however, is missing as an integral element of modern academic librarianship, the creation of new …

Devising A Classification Scheme For Islam: Opinions Of Lis And Islamic Studies Scholars, Haroon Idrees, Khalid Mahmood

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Libraries use classification systems to arrange library materials in a logical order and provide users better access. Formal structured classification systems have been developed for this purpose. Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), Charles Ammi Cutter's Expansive Classification (EC), The Subject Classification (SC) of James Duff Brown, Library of Congress Classification (LCC), Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), Henry E. Bliss's Bibliographic Classification (BC), and S. R. Ranganathan's Colon Classification (CC) are internationally known standard library classification systems. All these systems lack proper placement and coverage of materials being published on topics relevant to Islam. Islam is an area of extensive publication activity. Therefore, …

Essential Writing Tools For Building A Scholarly Foundation In Higher Education, Kelli R. Paquette

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The art of writing for publication is an intimidating concept for many beginning, tenure-track professors. This article is written to outline the essential writing tools for building a successful scholarly foundation in higher education. Writing ideas, such as identifying a topic and getting started, understanding the traits of high-quality writing, collaborating with colleagues, reviewing the literature and journals, and revising and resubmitting, are discussed. Just as knowledgeable contractors understand how tools work and can use the appropriate ones for various building tasks; scholarly writers must understand the required tools for high-quality intellectual writing and use those tools on a daily …

Metadata For Plant Seeds: Taxonomy, Standards, Issues, And Impact, Erin Wilson Nov 2009

Metadata For Plant Seeds: Taxonomy, Standards, Issues, And Impact, Erin Wilson

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

A growing awareness of the importance of biodiversity has brought international attention to seed collecting, saving, and information sharing. Scientists are continually learning more about seeds at the most basic biological level, and this new knowledge is raising questions about the taxonomic systems scientists have used since the 1700s. Contemporary seed metadata is a complex and diverse area for study. This begins by looking at the taxonomic systems employed by botanists and discussing current trends and issues in that area of seed metadata. The most prominent seed metadata standards are examined. Third, the emerging field of bioinformatics is addressed, and the …

Untold Truths: The Exclusion Of Enforced Sterilizations From The Peruvian Truth Commission's Final Report, Jocelyn E. Getgen Nov 2009

Untold Truths: The Exclusion Of Enforced Sterilizations From The Peruvian Truth Commission's Final Report, Jocelyn E. Getgen

Cornell Law School Berger International Speaker Papers

This presentation argues that the exclusion of enforced sterilization cases from the Peruvian Truth Commission's investigation and Final Report effectively erases State responsibility and decreases the likelihood for justice and reparations for women victims-survivors of State-sponsored violence in Peru. In a context of deep cultural and economic divides and violent conflict, this presentation recounts how the State's Family Planning Program violated Peruvian women's reproductive rights by sterilizing low-income, indigenous Quechua-speaking women without informed consent. This presentation argues that these systematic reproductive injustices constitute an act of genocide, proposes an independent inquiry, and advocates for a more inclusive investigation and final …
