What Is Broken About Scholarly Publishing … And How To Fix It, Paul Royster Nov 2009

What Is Broken About Scholarly Publishing … And How To Fix It, Paul Royster

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations

Our hearts are broken because things aren't like they used to be.

The functions and (uncertain) future of scholarly publishing.

The issues that threaten:1. Library budgets vs. acquisitions costs 2. Outmoded distribution networks 3. Missing common infrastructure 4. Future of professional evaluation.

There have never been greater opportunities for scholarly publishing, especially the library as publisher.

New types of Scholarly Communication.

University Press culture vs. Library culture: When worlds collide.

At UNL Libraries, we publish book‐length works that presses considered unpublishable.

Vision Statement: 1. University faculties can take back scholarly publishing. 2. Academic libraries can be leaders of this effort.

Temperature-Induced Restructuring Of Self-Assembled Ptpd Nanoparticle Superlattices, Guoqiang Ren, Yangchuan Xing Nov 2009

Temperature-Induced Restructuring Of Self-Assembled Ptpd Nanoparticle Superlattices, Guoqiang Ren, Yangchuan Xing

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

PtPd nanoparticle superlattices were prepared at room temperature and investigated for their restructuring at elevated temperatures. the PtPd nanoparticles were spherical with a diameter of 3.5±0.3nm and were capped with surfactants of oleic acids and oleylamine. Images of the nanoparticle superlattices were taken using a transmission electron microscope. Analysis of the images with fast Fourier transform (FFT) revealed whether the superlattices were crystalline or amorphous. It was found that the critical temperature that induced a phase transition of PtPd superlattices from a crystalline state to an amorphous state fall in the range of 100-110 °C. Meanwhile, heat-induced restructuring transformed less-ordered …

Investigation Of The Factors Influencing Skid Resistance And The International Friction Index, Luis G. Fuentes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is compiled of the findings of several phases of a detailed research study that was aimed at investigating the Skid Resistance phenomenon. In the first phase of the dissertation research a study was performed to evaluate the different factors that influence frictional measurements obtained using the Dynamic Friction Tester (DFT). A temperature calibration factor that would account for temperature effects on DFT readings and IFI computations was developed. In addition, other variables that also affect the friction measurements obtained using the DFT are identified. In the next phase of the dissertation research the effect of pavement roughness on …

The Influence Of Perceived Social Support From Parents, Classmates, And Teachers On Early Adolescents’ Mental Health, Tiffany N. White

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the relationships among perceived social support, mental health, and achievement in early adolescents, via analysis of an archival data set consisting of 390 middle school students. Specifically of interest was how various sources of social support (i.e., parent, classmate, and teacher) independently and uniquely predicted pathology (i.e., internalizing and externalizing symptoms) and wellness (i.e., life satisfaction) in youth. This study also examined the role of gender in the relationship between social support and mental health outcomes in order to delineate the specific types of support most salient to boys versus girls. Finally, this study explored the …

Generalists, Specialists, And The Best Experts: Where Do Systems Thinkers Fit In?, Joshua Hughes Nov 2009

Generalists, Specialists, And The Best Experts: Where Do Systems Thinkers Fit In?, Joshua Hughes

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

GENERALIST / SPECIALIST: A generalist is someone who has studied a little bit of everything, and in the end knows nothing well in particular. By contrast, a specialist is someone who has studied a single subject, and as a consequence does not even know his own subject, because every item of knowledge is related to other components of the whole system. The good scholar or scientist--like the good chef, manager, clinician, or orchestra conductor--is an expert in one field or craft, and knowledgeable in many. Like a mouse, he can explore the details of a terrain; and, like an owl, …

11,000,000 Words: An Avalanche Of Academic Archive Photos At K-State At Salina, Heidi Blackburn, Pam Bower, Alysia Starkey

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Institutional archives have always provided a sense of history and unity for most universities. This is especially emphasized for the K-State at Salina photographic collection. The school has gone through four different name changes in the last fifty years and the library has amassed an ove1whelming assortment of photographs documenting various events on campus, from groundbreaking ceremonies to student social occasions. With an estimated total of over 11 ,000 unlabeled photographs, the K -State at Salina librarians have worked hard to begin the process of providing the university community with a useful resource for historical research in the future. Age-Related Genetic And Epigenetic Chromosomal Changes: A Twin Study, Kimberly Jones Nov 2009

Age-Related Genetic And Epigenetic Chromosomal Changes: A Twin Study, Kimberly Jones

Theses and Dissertations

The primary aims of this study were to examine acquired genetic and epigenetic changes that occur in individuals with increasing age and to determine how these changes are influenced by genetic/environmental factors. Acquired genetic changes were assessed by determining the frequency and chromosomal contents of spontaneously occurring micronuclei in identical and fraternal twins. A total of 115 individuals (48 twin pairs and 19 singletons) were evaluated, ranging in age from 7 to 85 years. As expected, micronuclei frequencies, which are indicative of genomic damage, significantly increased with age (p<0.0001, r=0.446). The majority of micronuclei (32%) contained sex chromosomes and the frequency of sex chromosome-bearing micronuclei significantly increased with age (p<0.0001). The frequency of autosome-containing micronuclei was not significantly influenced by age or gender. However, some autosomes were seen more (chromosomes 4, 8, and 9) or less (chromosomes 17 and 22) frequently than expected by chance (p<0.05). An evaluation of the numerical contents of the sex chromosome-containing micronuclei and their corresponding binucleates showed that the majority of the binucleates had an abnormal chromosomal complement (either hypodiploid or hyperdiploid), with the subset of binucleates having a normal chromosomal complement decreasing with age for both the Y chromosome in males and the X chromosome in females. Model fitting, implemented in Mx, showed the variation in the frequency of micronuclei to be best explained by either additive genetic and unique environmental components, or common and unique environmental factors. Specific environmental exposures and health conditions that were shown to influence micronuclei frequencies, included: multivitamins, leafy green vegetables, fruit, vitamin E supplements, arthritis, heart disease, allergies, and alcohol. To assess acquired epigenetic changes, global methylation profiles of two identical twin pairs were compared and found to differ, indicating that individuals do develop alterations in their methylation profiles with age. Furthermore, the twin pair having a significant difference in their micronuclei frequencies and environmental exposures had more differences in their methylation pattern compared to the twin pair whose micronuclei frequencies and environmental factors did not differ. Overall, genetic and epigenetic changes were shown to occur with age and to be influenced by genetic and lifestyle factors.

Self-Fashioning, Consumption, And Japonisme: The Power Of Collecting In Tissot’S Jeunes Femmes Regardant Des Objets Japonais, 1869, Catherine Elizabeth Turner

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examines self-fashioning and the practice of collecting in Second Empire Paris as manifest in James Tissot's Jeunes femmes regardant des objets japonais (1869, Cincinnati Museum of Art). The painting, exhibited in the Salon of 1869, conspicuously portrays Tissot's own collection of exotic Asian collectibles and the artist's private luxe interior. When scholars investigate and interpret Jeunes femmes, it is regularly defined within the prescriptive realm of Tissot's later London paintings, or of his well known series, La Femme à Paris. I argue for a less circumspect engagement with the painting, by focusing on the portrayal of …

Effects Of Expectancies And Coping On Pain-Induced Motivation To Smoke, Joseph W. Ditre Nov 2009

Effects Of Expectancies And Coping On Pain-Induced Motivation To Smoke, Joseph W. Ditre

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The prevalence of tobacco smoking among persons with recurrent pain is approximately twice that observed in the general population. Smoking has been associated with the development and exacerbation of several chronically painful conditions. Conversely, there is both experimental and cross-sectional evidence that pain is a potent motivator of smoking. A recent study provided the first evidence that laboratory-induced pain could elicit increased craving and produce shorter latencies to smoke (Ditre & Brandon, 2008). To further elucidate interrelations between pain and smoking, and to identify potential targets for intervention, the current study tested whether several constructs derived from social-cognitive theory influence …

Communication, Consumption And Manipulation: The Body As Language In The Films Of Jan Švankmajer, Amanda Marie Dowd Nov 2009

Communication, Consumption And Manipulation: The Body As Language In The Films Of Jan Švankmajer, Amanda Marie Dowd

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I will analyze and discuss the work of renowned director Jan Švankmajer. Specifically, I will examine how director Jan Švankmajer’s representation of the body creates a metaphorical language. In addition, I will address what meaning can be gathered from, or made apparent through the commentary of the body’s language and discuss the significance of the socio-political implications. Prior to my discussion of Švankmajer’s work I will give a concise socio-political history of the Czech Republic from 1968-1994; this discussion will provide a framework for the subsequent analyses. In order to provide support for my argument, I will …
