Senderos De Mi Vida, Brooke Lindsey Alderman

World Languages and Cultures

For my senior project I will compose a book of poetry that depicts my life to date. The book will be divided into three sections: my childhood, adolescence, and college life. My objective is to show the progression of my life through the emotions of Spanish poetry. This project is a culmination of my knowledge as a MLL major and a Psychology minor. The first section will begin through the eyes of a four year-old child experiencing a tumultuous divorce. Pictures will be added to give the reader a more vivid description. The second section will be a candid view …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Of Aggregating Red Blood Cells In Postcapillary Venules, Bong Jae Chung, Sangho Kim, Paul C. Johnson, Aleksander S. Popel Dec 2009

Computational Fluid Dynamics Of Aggregating Red Blood Cells In Postcapillary Venules, Bong Jae Chung, Sangho Kim, Paul C. Johnson, Aleksander S. Popel

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Aggregate formation of red blood cells (RBCs) in a postcapillary venular bifurcation is investigated with three-dimensional computer simulations using the Chimera grid method. Interaction energy between the RBCs is modelled by a depletion interaction theory; RBCs are modelled as rigid oblate ellipsoids. The cell-cell interactions of RBCs are strongly dependent on vessel geometry and shear rates. The experimental data on vessel geometry, pseudoshear rates, and Dextran concentration obtained in our previous in vivo RBC aggregation study in postcapillary venules of the rat spinotrapezius muscle were used to simulate RBC aggregation. The computational results were compared to the experimental results from …

A Characterization Of Caffeine Imprinted Polypyrrole Electrode, Deepika Mandadi Dec 2009

A Characterization Of Caffeine Imprinted Polypyrrole Electrode, Deepika Mandadi

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Nanotechnology holds great potential for improving our lives by creating many new materials and devices in medical sciences, electronics and also in energy production. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are highly stable synthetic polymers that possess molecular recognition properties due to cavities created in the polymer matrix that are complementary to an analyte both in shape and in positioning of functional groups. These MIPs have been widely employed for diverse applications (e.g., in chromatographic separation, drug screening, chemosensors, catalysis, immunoassays etc) due to their specificity towards the target molecules and high stability against physicochemical perturbations. Conductive polymers, (CPs) such as polypyrrole, …

The Efficiency Of Sampling Techniques For Ntd Reporting, Xuehao Chu Dec 2009

The Efficiency Of Sampling Techniques For Ntd Reporting, Xuehao Chu

Journal of Public Transportation

This paper examines the minimum sample size required by each of six sampling techniques for estimating annual passenger miles traveled to meet the Federal Transit Administration’s 95% confidence and 10% precision levels for the National Transit Database. It first describes these sampling techniques in non-technical terms and hypothesizes how they are expected to compare in their minimum sample sizes. It then determines the minimum sample size for 83 actual sample datasets that cover 6 modes and 65 transit agencies. Finally, it summarizes the results in minimum sample size to compare the relative efficiency of these sampling techniques. The potential for …

Growth Management And Sustainable Transport: Do Growth Management Policies Promote Transit Use?, Brian Deal, Jae Hong Kim, Arnab Chakraborty

Journal of Public Transportation

Advocates of sustainable development typically consider mass transit to be more sustainable than their automobile-dependent alternatives and desire policies that can achieve higher use of urban mass transit. In this paper, we hypothesize that statelevel growth management policies should increase transit use in two ways: first, by limiting core abandonment while accommodating potential increases in population, reducing development elsewhere; and second, by directing new development where transit systems are already well established. We tested this by analyzing 95 metropolitan areas across the United States, 16 with growth-management policies and 79 without. We found that the first set showed a statistically …

Service Supply And Customer Satisfaction In Public Transportation: The Quality Paradox, Margareta Friman, Markus Fellesson Dec 2009

Service Supply And Customer Satisfaction In Public Transportation: The Quality Paradox, Margareta Friman, Markus Fellesson

Journal of Public Transportation

Satisfaction measures obtained from citizens are frequently used in performancebased contracts due to their presumed link with company performance. However, few studies have actually examined the link between traveler satisfaction measures and objective performance measures in public transport. This research analyzes the relationship between the objective performance measures of public transport services and the satisfaction perceived by travelers. Data were collected in six different European cities. Three objective service performance measures were obtained for each city from the UITP Millennium Database. Three subjective satisfaction attribute measures were obtained from Benchmarking in European Service of Public Transport (BEST 2001), answered by …

A Case Study Of Job Access And Reverse Commute Programs In The Chicago, Kansas City, And San Francisco Metropolitan Regions, J.S. Onésimo Sandoval, Eric Petersen, Kim L. Hunt

Journal of Public Transportation

The 1996 federal welfare-to-work legislation generated significant debate regarding what role public transportation should play in facilitating lower welfare rates. Given this debate, transportation has been called the “to” component of welfare-to-work. In this paper, we present findings from three case studies that examine job accessibility and reverse commute transportation programs in the Chicago, Kansas City, and San Francisco metropolitan regions. We explored how institutional and/or grassroots support prevented or fostered the innovation and implementation of non-traditional Access-to-Jobs and Reverse Commute (JARC) programs. Our findings suggest that institutional support and grassroots support are necessary ingredients for the implementation of innovative …

Reflecting On Pupil Learning To Promote Social Justice: A Catholic University’S Approach To Assessment, Patrick J. Mcquillan, Lisa A. D’Souza, Aubrey J. Scheopner, Grant R. Miller, Ann Marie Gleeson, Kara Mitchell, Sarah Enterline, Marilyn Cochran-Smith

Journal of Catholic Education

In contrast to current education policies that conceptualize pupil learning largely in terms of standardized exam scores, we offer an alternative view, one that conceives of pupil learning as a source of insight for pupils and teachers alike. Drawing on survey data and a qualitative study of the teacher candidate experience, we explore the following questions: In a teacher education program committed to promoting social justice, embracing an inquiry-into-practice stance, and affirming diversity by meeting the needs of diverse learners, how do teacher candidates assess pupil learning, in particular, how are their assessments influenced by these program themes? Further, how …

At Issue: Improving Your Teaching Using Synergistic Andragogy, Michael Kroth, Bryan Taylor, Larry Lindner, Marty Yopp

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

Synergistic Andragogy (SA) is related to the concept of Synergogy as presented by Mouton and Blake (1984). Synergogy, much like SA, is an alternative mode of education. Mouton and Blake define synergogy as a “systematic approach to learning in which the members of small teams learn from one another through structured interactions” (Mouton 1984, p. xii). Synergogy focuses on learner motivation and involvement, whereas Synergistic Andragogy (SA) focuses on the learning experience and its potentially powerful outcomes. SA is a type of learning which occurs through the interaction of two or more groups of adult learners such that the combined …

Enforcing Intellectual Property Rights: A Methodology For Understanding The Enforcement Problem In China, Justin Mccabe Dec 2009

Enforcing Intellectual Property Rights: A Methodology For Understanding The Enforcement Problem In China, Justin Mccabe

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “Intellectual property rights are neither protected nor enforced in strict uniformity throughout the world. However, it can be said that in most developed countries, intellectual property is preciously guarded, as evidenced by a plethora of intellectual property statutes, penalties for infringement, and consistent attempts to convince less developed nations to adopt strong—or stronger—intellectual property protections. Despite continued vigilance by developed countries in bringing about increased international harmony among intellectual property regimes, some developing countries sustain questionable enforcement policies. What the driving force is behind intellectual property enforcement policies—or more appropriately, the lack thereof—is a matter of disagreement. In order …

An Intelligent Approach To Recyclability Evaluation In Automobile Design, Z. Taha, N. Sakundarini, R.A. Raja Ghazilla, J. Gonzalez Dec 2009

An Intelligent Approach To Recyclability Evaluation In Automobile Design, Z. Taha, N. Sakundarini, R.A. Raja Ghazilla, J. Gonzalez

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

An automobile comprises of thousands of parts of which 74-75% is composed of ferrous and nonferrous material and 8-/0% are from plastics, and typically only less than 75% of weight can be recycled and the rest cannot. As a result this leads to an increasing number of landfill required. Unfortunately, there is no more space available. With the importance of environmental protection and sustainable development; recyclability of materials is now becoming increasingly important in automobile design. Recyclability measures the efficiency of material recycling. Due to environmental regulation, automobile manufacturers are working to improve recyclability as well as reducing amount of …

Analysis Of Missing Values In Simultaneous Linear Functional Relationship Model For Circular Variables, S.F. Hassan, Y.Z. Zubairi, A.G. Hussin Dec 2009

Analysis Of Missing Values In Simultaneous Linear Functional Relationship Model For Circular Variables, S.F. Hassan, Y.Z. Zubairi, A.G. Hussin

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Circular data is rather special and it cannot be treated just like linear data. Hence, all existing procedures that have been used in treating the missing values in linear data are not longer available for circular data. Imputation methods for missing values data are proposed in the paper. Two different methods namely circular mean by column and sample mean are used. For this study, missing values were tested in parameter estimation for simultaneous linear functional relationship model for circular variables. Via simulation studies, it shows that the proposed method provide an adequate approach in handling missing values for circular variables.

Development Of A Framework For Disassemblability Design Optimization For Sustainable Manufacturing, R.A. Raja Ghazilla, Z. Taha

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Sustainable Product development is seen as an inevitable solution in protecting the environment. Among the important strategy in sustainable product development is through product recovery by closing the loop. Product recovery enables the reuse of depleting source of virgin material as well as avoiding the accumulation of solid waste. Maintenance can be also considered as a strategy towards sustainable product by prolonging product life time. The success of product recovery and maintenance is highly dependant on the time and cost efficiencies of the disassembly process. This paper reviews the various methods used to evaluate disassemblability. The development of the methods …
