Fall Field Report, August-November 2009, W. Ross Silcock
Fall Field Report, August-November 2009, W. Ross Silcock
Nebraska Bird Review
This was probably the most "normal" fall season in a while, as measured by the small number of late departure dates among summer residents and migrants, early arrival dates among winter residents and migrants, high counts, and rarities. In other words, very little of significance happened. Indeed, in order to provide a spark, I'll even mention three exotics that were reported: a Swan Goose at Fremont 26 November (JRo), a Common Peafowl in Dodge Co 5 August (JWe), and a White-faced Cockatiel caught in a Dixon Co yard 24 August (JJ). None is likely to be a threat to our …

The Fish Crow (Corvus Ossifragus) Reaches Nebraska, Joel G. Jorgensen, Melissa J. Panella, W. Ross Silcock, Kristal J. Stoner
Nebraska Bird Review
The Fish Crow (Corvus ossifragus) was formerly endemic to the southeastern United States where it inhabited coastal areas along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts (McGowan 2001). Since the early 1900s, the species has steadily expanded north and west along major river systems (McGowan 2001). Fish Crow range expansion has followed a logical pattern, expanding along major rivers in regions close to established populations, in adjacent states to the south and east of Nebraska. The species was first recorded in Missouri in 1964 (Robbins and Easterla 1992). In 1984, Fish Crow was first reported in Kansas and by 1991 …

Patterns Of Bison Hair Use In Nests Of Tallgrass Prairie Birds, Bryan R. Coppedge
Patterns Of Bison Hair Use In Nests Of Tallgrass Prairie Birds, Bryan R. Coppedge
The Prairie Naturalist
I examined patterns of bison (Bison bison L.) hair use by passerine birds nesting in the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, Osage County, Oklahoma, 2002-2004. I collected and dissected 103 nests of 15 species into their constituent components. Nests were predominately composed of herbaceous material such as grass stems and leaves. Woody material and mud were rarely used. Bison hair was the most prominent zoological material used in nests, with lesser amounts and occurrence of arthropod silk, snake skin, feathers, jack rabbit (Lepus californicus Oray) fur, and man-made materials such as cellophane and string. At least one nest of 13 …
Long Distance Molt Migration By A Giant Canada Goose From Eastern South Dakota, Bobby J. Anderson, Charles D. Dieter
Long Distance Molt Migration By A Giant Canada Goose From Eastern South Dakota, Bobby J. Anderson, Charles D. Dieter
The Prairie Naturalist
To reduce crop damage by resident giant Canada geese (Schaible et al. 2005), the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks (SDGFP) initiated a program to reduce goose nesting success in eastern South Dakota. One management tool used by SDGFP personnel was the destruction of giant Canada goose nests. When a giant Canada goose has its nest destroyed, they are known to initiate a molt migration (Mykut 2002, Luukkonen et aI. 2008). We attached Platform Transmitting Terminals (PTT; model ST -19) to document and describe molt migrations of giant Canada geese following nest destruction. We captured 3 adult nesting …

Noteworthy Winter Prey Of Short-Eared Owls In Southern Texas: A Case Study, Damon Williford, Marc C. Woodin, Mary Kay Skoruppa
The Prairie Naturalist
The winter range of North American short-eared owls (Asio flammeus) encompasses much of the United States, including southern Texas, where it is a common winter resident (Oberholser 1974, Rappole and Blacklock 1985). Winter food habits of short-eared owls are relatively weJl documented, but the majority of investigations have been conducted in eastern Canada and northeastern U.S. (Clark 1975, Holt 1993); midwestern U.S. (Colvin and Spaulding 1983); and British Columbia and Pacific northwestern U.S. (Bogiatto et al. 2001). The short-eared owl has a narrow trophic niche, generally preying on small mammals, with voles (Microtus spp.) and deer mice …

Monitoring Meadows With A Modified Robel Pole In The Northern Black Hills, South Dakota, Daniel W, Uresk, Daryl E. Mergen, Ted A. Benzon
The Prairie Naturalist
We used a modified Robel pole to measure vegetation for a study conducted in the northern Black Hills, South Dakota. Objectives were to determine the relationship between visual obstruction readings and clipped standing herbage, and develop guidelines for monitoring standing herbage. The relationship between visual obstruction readings and standing herbage was linear and regression coefficients were significant (P≤ 0.001). Herbage ranged from 140 to 3313 kg· ha-1 with a mean of 1386 kg· ha-1 (SE = 320 kg· ha-1) for 123 transects. Visual obstruction readings (VOR) ranged from 0.6 to 30.4 (number of 1.27 cm bands …
A Partial Inventory Of Islands In North Dakota: Potential For Breeding Waterfowl Management, Michael L. Szymanski
A Partial Inventory Of Islands In North Dakota: Potential For Breeding Waterfowl Management, Michael L. Szymanski
The Prairie Naturalist
Islands can provide secure nesting habitat for ducks and other waterbirds, especially in agriculturally dominated landscapes. I inventoried natural and man-made islands in the portion of North Dakota covered by the Prairie Pothole Joint Venture (PPJV). I mapped 1,305 islands in this area; up to 46% of which could provide enhanced nest success with management (e.g., predator removal or establishment of brushy cover). Management of islands for breeding ducks may be an important method for achieving desired reproductive rates in the PP JV as substantial areas of perennial grass cover are lost from federal conservation programs, primarily the Conservation Reserve …

Sos: Searching Help Pages Of R Packages, Spencer Graves, Sundar Dorai-Raj, Romain François
The R Journal
The sos package provides a means to quickly and flexibly search the help pages of contributed packages, finding functions and datasets in seconds or minutes that could not be found in hours or days by any other means we know. Its findFn function accesses Jonathan Baron’s R Site Search database and returns the matches in a data frame of class "findFn", which can be further manipulated by other sos functions to produce, for example, an Excel file that starts with a summary sheet that makes it relatively easy to prioritize alternative packages for further study. As such, it provides a …
Rattle: A Data Mining Gui For R, Graham J. Williams
Rattle: A Data Mining Gui For R, Graham J. Williams
The R Journal
Data mining delivers insights, pat terns, and descriptive and predictive models from the large amounts of data available today in many organisations. The data miner draws heavily on methodologies, techniques and algorithms from statistics, machine learning, and computer science. R increasingly provides a powerful platform for data mining. However, scripting and programming is sometimes a challenge for data analysts moving into data mining. The Rattle package provides a graphical user interface specifically for data mining using R. It also provides a stepping stone toward using R as a programming language for data analysis.

The R Journal
Random forests are one of the most popular statistical learning algorithms, and a variety of methods for fitting random forests and related recursive partitioning approaches is available in R. This paper points out two important features of the random forest implementation cforest available in the party package: The resulting forests are unbiased and thus prefer able to the randomForest implementation avail able in randomForest if predictor variables are of different types. Moreover, a conditional per mutation importance measure has recently been added to the party package, which can help evaluate the importance of correlated predictor variables. The rationale of this …

Thirty-one species of Cephaloleiini are assigned to new genera, creating new combinations: 19 to Parimatidium Spaeth, 10 to Stilpnaspis Weise, and two to Demotispa Baly. Demotispa peruana membrata Uhmann, 1957 is raised to full species status. As the transfer of Cephaloleia limbatum Pic to Demotispa creates a homonymy, the species is renamed Demotispa pici nomen novum.

Asymptest: A Simple R Package For Classical Parametric Statistical Tests And Confidence Intervals In Large Samples, J.-F. Coeurjolly, R. Drouilhet, P. Lafaye De Micheaux, J.-F. Robineau
The R Journal
asympTest is an R package implementing large sample tests and confidence intervals. One and two sample mean and variance tests (differences and ratios) are considered. The test statistics are all expressed in the same form as the Student t-test, which facilitates their presentation in the classroom. This contribution also fills the gap of a robust (to non-normality) alternative to the chi-square single variance test for large samples, since no such procedure is implemented in standard statistical software.

Convergenceconcepts: An R Package To Investigate Various Modes Of Convergence, Pierre Lafaye De Micheaux, Benoit Liquet
The R Journal
ConvergenceConcepts is an R pack age, built upon the tkrplot, tcltk and lattice packages, designed to investigate the convergence of simulated sequences of random variables. Four classical modes of convergence may be studied, namely: almost sure convergence (a.s.), convergence in probability (P), convergence in law (L) and convergence in r-th mean (r). This investigation is performed through ac curate graphical representations. This package may be used as a pedagogical tool. It may give students a better understanding of these notions and help them to visualize these difficult theoretical concepts. Moreover, …

Transitioning To R: Replicating Sas, Stata, And Sudaan Analysis Techniques In Health Policy Data, Anthony Damico
The R Journal
Statistical, data manipulation, and presentation tools make R an ideal integrated package for research in the fields of health pol icy and healthcare management and evaluation. However, the technical documentation accompanying most data sets used by researchers in these fields does not include syntax examples for analysts to make the transition from another statistical package to R. This paper describes the steps required to import health policy data into R, to prepare that data for analysis using the two most common complex survey variance calculation techniques, and to produce the principal set of statistical estimates sought by health pol icy …

The Beetles Of St. Lucia, Lesser Antilles (Insecta: Coleoptera): Diversity And Distributions, Stewart B. Peck
Insecta Mundi
The published beetle fauna of the island of St. Lucia is summarized. It contains 135 genera, and 175 species in 25 families. Four species are accidentally introduced by human activities. Twenty three species are endemic (restricted) to the island. Twenty seven species on St. Lucia are shared only with other islands of the Lesser Antilles, and 22 species are widespread Antilles endemics. The remaining 56.6% of the fauna is otherwise mostly one which is widely distributed in the Antilles and the Neotropics. This suggests that it is mostly an immigrant fauna originating in the continental Neotropics. Undoubtedly, the actual numbers …

Stochastic Analysis Of Electrostatic Mems Subjected To Parameter Variations, Nitin Agarwal, Narayana R. Aluru
PRISM: NNSA Center for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems
This paper presents an efficient stochastic framework for quantifying the effect of stochastic variations in various design parameters such as material properties, geometrical features, and/or operating conditions on the performance of electrostatic microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices. The stochastic framework treats uncertainty as a separate dimension, in addition to space and time, and seeks to approximate the stochastic dependent variables using sparse grid interpolation in the multidimensional random space. This approach can be effectively used to compute important information, such as moments (mean and variance), failure probabilities, and sensitivities with respect to design variables, regarding relevant quantities of interest. The approach …

The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Oxidative-Induced Neoplastic Transformation, Daniel J. Puleston
The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Oxidative-Induced Neoplastic Transformation, Daniel J. Puleston
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a normal occurrence in the life of a cell. ROS are derived from both exogenous and endogenous sources and take part in a plethora of normal physiological mechanisms from host immunity to cell cycle regulation. However, ROS also exhibit a deleterious, disruptive character that means they must now be taken seriously as a genuine carcinogenic agent able to alter a variety of pathways leading to the initiation of cancer. The two-sidedness of ROS means that the relationship between ROS and the onset and progression of cancer is hard to determine. ROS and …
The Role Of The Virus-Phytoplankton System In Marine Biogeochemical Cycling: Possible Impacts Of Climate Change, George Sorensen
The Role Of The Virus-Phytoplankton System In Marine Biogeochemical Cycling: Possible Impacts Of Climate Change, George Sorensen
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Phytoplankton is the main driver of ocean net primary production (Falkowski et al., 1998) and a dominant force behind biogeochemical cycling in the ocean. It is a component of one of the oldest and best described virus-host relationships (e.g. Suttle et al., 1990). Viruses have typically been viewed as pathogens of marine organisms but it has become clear that they also play a critical role in biogeochemical processes in marine systems, themselves falling into the category of dissolved organic matter (DOM) (Wilhelm & Suttle, 1999). Viruses play a large part in carbon (Middelboe & Lyck, 2002), sulphur (Hill et al., …

Understanding Unconscious Plagiarism: The Effects Of Idea Elaboration And Perceived Idea Quality On Later Recall And Recognition Of Ideas, Rachel Elliman
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Previous research has shown that idea improvement and perceived idea quality have differential effects on recall-own and generate-new plagiarism. Participants completed a generative task in pairs and read some ideas perceived to be of high quality before elaborating on a selection of the ideas. It was expected that other-generated ideas that had been improved or read out loud would be more susceptible to unconscious plagiarism. Participants returned a week later to complete recall-own generated, recall-own read, generate-new and source monitoring tasks. Partner-generated ideas were significantly more likely to be plagiarised following improvement only. Participants were significantly more likely to plagiarise …

Does Culture In The Darkness Effect Retina Morphology Of Sepia Officinalis?, Rachael Warrington
The Plymouth Student Scientist
In Sepia officinalis there was no significant difference (P = 0.241) for the eye diameter in terms of body length. The body length was significantly longer in cuttlefish reared in the dark treatment (P = 0.029). This could be due to photoperiod regulating the release of growth hormones. The outer segment is similar in both treatments containing small compacted rhabdomeres elongating towards the inner segment. The dark retina has a thicker outer segment than the light, which could be an adaptation increasing the probability for photon capture by the rhabdomeres. Rhabdomeres vary little between treatments in comparison to vesicle cells …

Frequency-Domain Simulations Of A Negative-Index Material With Embedded Gain, Yonatan Sivan, Shumin Xiao, Uday K. Chettiar, Alexander V. Kildishev, V. M. Shalaev
Birck and NCN Publications
We solve the equations governing light propagation in a negative-index material with embedded nonlinearly saturable gain material using a frequency-domain model. We show that available gain materials can lead to complete loss compensation only if they are located in the regions where the field enhancement is maximal. We study the increased enhancement of the fields in the gain composite as well as in the metal inclusions and show analytically that the effective gain is determined by the average near-field enhancement.
