Gamma Motor Neurons Express Distinct Genetic Markers At Birth And Require Muscle Spindle-Derived Gdnf For Postnatal Survival, Neil A. Shneider, Meghan N. Brown, Courtney A. Smith, James Pickel, Francisco J. Alvarez

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

Background: Gamma motor neurons (γ-MNs) selectively innervate muscle spindle intrafusal fibers and regulate their sensitivity to stretch. They constitute a distinct subpopulation that differs in morphology, physiology and connectivity from α-MNs, which innervate extrafusal muscle fibers and exert force. The mechanisms that control the differentiation of functionally distinct fusimotor neurons are unknown. Progress on this question has been limited by the absence of molecular markers to specifically distinguish and manipulate γ-MNs. Recently, it was reported that early embryonic γ-MN precursors are dependent on GDNF. Using this knowledge we characterized genetic strategies to label developing γ-MNs based on GDNF receptor expression, …

A Scaling Method And Its Applications To Problems In Fractional Dimensional Space, Sami I. Muslih, Om P. Agrawal Dec 2009

A Scaling Method And Its Applications To Problems In Fractional Dimensional Space, Sami I. Muslih, Om P. Agrawal

Articles

A scaling method is proposed to find (1) the volume and the surface area of a generalized hypersphere in a fractional dimensional space and (2) the solid angle at a point for the same space. It is demonstrated that the total dimension of the fractional space can be obtained by summing the dimension of the fractional line element along each axis. The regularization condition is defined for functions depending on more than one variable. This condition is applied (1) to find a closed form expression for the fractional Gaussian integral, (2) to establish a relationship between a fractional dimensional space …

Markets And The Mormon Conflict: Nauvoo, Illinois, 1839-1846, Catherine Mary Wycoff Dec 2009

Markets And The Mormon Conflict: Nauvoo, Illinois, 1839-1846, Catherine Mary Wycoff

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the development of the economy during the period the Mormons were in Illinois, 1839-1846. It argues that the economy developed similarly to contemporary towns and that the Mormons in Nauvoo participated in the local and regional market. However, the doctrine of the gathering produced explosive population growth, including almost 5,000 immigrants from Britain. The economy was not able to absorb the number and this contributed to the exodus of the Mormons to the west in 1846. The main sources used are surviving account books, diaries, journals from merchants and farmers. The first chapter describes the settlement of …

Quantum Forbidden-Interval Theorems For Stochastic Resonance, Mark M. Wilde, Bart Kosko Dec 2009

Quantum Forbidden-Interval Theorems For Stochastic Resonance, Mark M. Wilde, Bart Kosko

Faculty Publications

We extend the classical forbidden-interval theorems for a stochastic-resonance noise benefit in a nonlinear system to a quantum-optical communication model and a continuous-variable quantum key distribution model. Each quantum forbidden-interval theorem gives a necessary and sufficient condition that determines whether stochastic resonance occurs in quantum communication of classical messages. The quantum theorems apply to any quantum noise source that has finite variance or that comes from the family of infinite-variance alpha-stable probability densities. Simulations show the predicted noise benefits for the basic quantum communication model and the continuous-variable quantum key distribution model. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Optimization Of Quantum Interferometric Metrological Sensors In The Presence Of Photon Loss, Tae Woo Lee, Sean D. Huver, Hwang Lee, Lev Kaplan, Steven B. Mccracken, Changjun Min, Dmitry B. Uskov, Christoph F. Wildfeuer, Georgios Veronis, Jonathan P. Dowling

Faculty Publications

We optimize two-mode entangled number states of light in the presence of loss in order to maximize the extraction of the available phase information in an interferometer. Our approach optimizes over the entire available input Hilbert space with no constraints, other than fixed total initial photon number. We optimize to maximize the Fisher information, which is equivalent to minimizing the phase uncertainty. We find that in the limit of zero loss, the optimal state is the maximally path-entangled (so-called N00N) state, for small loss, the optimal state gradually deviates from the N00N state, and in the limit of large loss, …

Voice And Volume Of Leader Self-Awareness, Michael J.M. Mcdonald Dec 2009

Voice And Volume Of Leader Self-Awareness, Michael J.M. Mcdonald

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study proposed that the level of self-awareness possessed by a leader has a direct relationship with the engagement level of the team he or she leads. A quantitative approach using the results of self-other leadership ratings and team engagement ratings were examined to explain employee engagement through perceptions of leadership awareness.

By understanding leadership through the integration of two instruments, one designed to measure seven specific demands of leadership (the L7 instrument) and another to measure employee engagement on twelve dimensions (the Q12 instrument), this study explored the relationship between leader self-awareness and the effect of that awareness on …

The Design Brief: Conceptual Tool For Visual Resolution Of Professional Design Problems, Jason Andrew Neal Dec 2009

The Design Brief: Conceptual Tool For Visual Resolution Of Professional Design Problems, Jason Andrew Neal

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I show how I have integrated the design brief concept with my art philosophy to help guide the exploration and visual resolution of three academic visual projects. The design brief is the most significant project management tool I have added to my design philosophy and production approach during my graduate studies. It has not changed the art I create, but rather has changed how I plan for and manage the production of my art. The brief consists of a series of questions that I can apply to all design decisions to make sure those decisions remain consistent …

Seeing Through The Clouds, Sandra Louise Bakke Dec 2009

Seeing Through The Clouds, Sandra Louise Bakke

Theses and Dissertations

A memoir written in vignettes shows how the writer's childhood, family, and faith connect the past with the present. In searching for words to express memory, the writing uncovers and discovers what needs to be said. The selected narratives attest to events and influences that reveal the ever hovering shadow of the past as I see it. Through the clouds of memory, the stories mold themselves until they become the truth, a portrait of the author's self identity as daughter, mother, wife, Christian, and storyteller.

Susette La Flesche: Indian Rights And Rural Activism In 19th Century America, Amanda L. Paige

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on the life of Susette La Flesche, a 19th century Omaha woman. La Flesche challenged views Anglo Americans held of American Indians as she spoke out against failed U.S. government policy towards the American Indians. A champion for allotment, Susette was one of the few to realize its potential shortcomings. She continued her pursuit for American Indian equality throughout her life but found agrarian reform equally important and rewarding. Writing was important to Susette from her letters to friends in the east, her speeches, short stories, and newspaper articles she wrote in her relatively brief lifetime. It …

The Relationship Of Prison Sentences Of Juveniles And Adults Convicted In Arkansas Criminal Courts, Jacqueline Ann Davis Dec 2009

The Relationship Of Prison Sentences Of Juveniles And Adults Convicted In Arkansas Criminal Courts, Jacqueline Ann Davis

Theses and Dissertations

All states have set legal terms that allow juvenile defendants to be transferred from juvenile court to criminal court. Arkansas Code 9-27-318 is the state's policy that outlines the filing and transfer of juveniles to the criminal division of circuit court in Arkansas. Using data collected from Arkansas juvenile practitioners, this thesis uses a qualitative approach to analyze their understanding of the state's transfer policy. This research will also seek to determine how court data in Arkansas is collected and maintained, how court data in Arkansas impacts the evaluation of Arkansas Code 9-27-318, and if Arkansas' transfer policy handles juveniles …

Genetic Dissection Of Triterpenoid Saponin Production In Chenopodium Quinoa Using Microarray Analysis, Derrick James Reynolds Dec 2009

Genetic Dissection Of Triterpenoid Saponin Production In Chenopodium Quinoa Using Microarray Analysis, Derrick James Reynolds

Theses and Dissertations

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is an important food crop for subsistence farmers in the Altiplano (high plains) of Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. Saponins are part of a diverse family of secondary metabolites that are found in high concentrations in the pericarp of many varieties of quinoa. Due to their bitter taste and anti-nutritive properties, saponins must be removed before the quinoa grain is consumed. There are ‘sweet’ varieties of quinoa that have significantly reduced levels of saponin. Previous research suggests saponin production is controlled by a single locus. The major objective of this research was to elucidate the genetic …
