A Large Entrance To The Inner Cavity Of Bk Channels Is Required For Their Large Conductance, Yanyan Geng Dec 2009

A Large Entrance To The Inner Cavity Of Bk Channels Is Required For Their Large Conductance, Yanyan Geng

Open Access Dissertations

Large conductance voltage and Ca2+ activated K+ (BK) channels control electrical excitability in many cell types. BK channels have the largest conductance (~250 pS) of all K+ selective channels. To explore whether a large entrance to the inner cavity of BK channels is required for their large conductance, I examined if changing the size of the entrance alters the single-channel current amplitude. Previous studies suggest that residues E321/E324 in BK channels are located at the entrance to the inner cavity. To test if positions 321/324 are accessible to intracellular ions, I compared single-channel outward current before and after attaching thiol …

Basic Preparation For Oboe Auditionsby Using Selected Oboe Excerpts, Shen Wang

Open Access Dissertations

This essay describes basic preparation techniques for oboe auditions through examples demonstrated in selected oboe excerpts. The application of these methods in the selected oboe excerpts will help to reinforce the objective of each outlined preparation technique. Three aspects regarding preparation techniques are discussed. Technical Preparation describes different practice methods intended to increase technical performance consistency for an audition. Performance Internalization details the mental approach to accurately prepare a solo audition before an audition committee. Critical Factors Involving Reed Preparation describes effective processes in reed preparation through the analysis of reed-making sources. Basic Preparation for Oboe Auditions by Using Selected …

The Chesapeake Project: A Collaborative Model For Preserving And Providing Permanent Access To "Born Digital" Web Publications, Sarah Rhodes Dec 2009

The Chesapeake Project: A Collaborative Model For Preserving And Providing Permanent Access To "Born Digital" Web Publications, Sarah Rhodes

Digital Preservation Presentations

The proliferation of legal materials published directly to the Web with no print counterpart poses a new and unprecedented challenge for librarians, archivists, and information professionals concerned about the long-term preservation of legal resources. In response to this preservation challenge, the Georgetown Law Library, in collaboration with the State Law Libraries of Maryland and Virginia, launched The Chesapeake Project in March 2007. A two-year pilot digital preservation program, The Chesapeake Project utilizes a shared digital archive in order to stabilize, preserve, and provide permanent access to legal materials published on the World Wide Web. The intention of the project is …

The Role Of Ombudsmen In Assuring Quality For Residents Of Long-Term Care Facilities: Straining To Make Ends Meet, Carol O'Shaughnessy Dec 2009

The Role Of Ombudsmen In Assuring Quality For Residents Of Long-Term Care Facilities: Straining To Make Ends Meet, Carol O'Shaughnessy

National Health Policy Forum

Assuring quality of care for residents in long-term care facilities has been a serious and continuing concern of policymakers for decades. The Older Americans Act’s long-term care ombudsman program is a consumer advocacy model intended to improve quality of care by helping the 2.5 million residents of almost 67,000 nursing and other residential care facilities resolve complaints about their care and protect their rights. Despite broad recognition of its value in assisting residents and its efforts to complement federal and state oversight of long-term care facilities, some observers are concerned about the program’s ability to meet its legislative mandates. Limited …
