Wig Volatility Analysis Using Persistence Measures, Mariola Zalewska

The paper presents an analysis of WIG volatility using persistence measures: draw ups and draw downs. Historical sequence of WIG return rates was used to simulate 50 series of index quotations, assuming that WIG was not persistent - sustainability of local monotonicity. The sample was used to compare generated and real distributions of con stant changes (draws). The comparison shows that by neglecting persistence, one underestimates the frequency of the large constant changes occurring.

Visualizing Data, Visualizing Models: Getting Priorities Right When Analyzing Data, Alex Chavez, Richard Gonzalez

We discuss methods of visualizing data and statistical models. The key innovation of these methods is that specialized graphs simultaneously illustrate underlying patterns in data and the properties of the statistical model that are used to analyze the data. These visualization techniques provide ways of understanding the relation between variables, illustrate how the statistical model works and can reveal how the statistical model may not be capturing underlying patterns among the variables.

One of the main factors which cause the data quality is their completeness. Data from surveys based on representative samples are always biased by an error resulting from their incompleteness. To say something about the distribution of opinion in the general population, on the basis of incomplete data, we should use a special statistical techniques to take account of missings. The presence of missings are - amongst others - associated with demographic and social characteristics, as well as the degree of respondent's exclusion from the world of information. Background The Community Voice program is designed for African-Americans and explores key factors that can contribute to African-American infant mortality. This program was implemented in Henrico County based on Virginia Health Statistics that the White infant mortality rate average during the years of 2001-2005 was 5.3 deaths per 1,000 live births and in the same time period the infant mortality rate for African-Americans was 13.7 deaths per 1,000 live births. The lower Mount Rogers Formation (LMRF) is described by Rankin (1993) as a sequence of intercalated metabasalts and volcanogenic sediments with minor metarhyolite. We have chosen to examine the sequence of the LMRF units exposed along Elk Garden Ridge, a high shoulder between the summits of Whitetop Mountain and Mount Rogers in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area in SW Virginia. This sequence represents an uplifted block of LMRF units enclosed by exposures of Whitetop and Wilburn metarhyolites.

In the field, progressive lithologic changes can be observed walking up-section along Elk Garden ridge that are indicative of changes in lava …

The National Preparedness Guidelines (2007) state, “as uniformed responders account for less than 1% of the total U.S. population, it is clear that citizens must be better prepared, trained, and practiced on how best to take care of themselves and assist others in those first crucial hours during and after a catastrophic incident.” This is increasingly more evident due to recent disasters such as hurricane Katrina. The Alert, Evacuate and Shelter (AES) program identified and trained youth/adult teams to use geospatial technology to map shelter locations and evacuation routes. The notion of the structural model is frequently referred to in the literature on statistical models and methods. However, the meaning of the term differs. In the paper we try to give a compact description and comparison of the most frequent ways of comprehending the term structural model. We skip parameter estimation problems for the various sorts of structural models and focus on a synthetic comparison and an indication of the similarities and differences existing between the models. The development of the Credit Default Swap (CDS) market has enabled investors and researchers to measure a risk premium in a precise way and therefore to analyze their fluctuations over time. Changes in the premiums for developing markets such as Brazil, Mexico or Turkey were very substantial in the last several years. The observation of such large fluctuations begs the question for their cause. Due to some specific properties a special place in the economic literature is given to financial time series modelling. In the following study spot and futures prices of frozen concentrated orange juice were analysed and modelled, however obtained results can be applied to other farm products quoted on worldwide stock markets. The results of the empirical analysis enabled to verify properties of financial time series presented in the literature. In the article we present methods used in the analysis of social networks and examples of their application to organizations and management research. Methods applied in social network analysis are considered quantitative. We present basic assumptions and characteristics of social network research, examples of research data and problems, methods of their analysis, and examples of applications. We describe applications of social network analysis in researching innovations, social capital, power, corporate governance, communication and managerial careers.

The article presents the application of factor and cluster analysis in market segmentation, using data obtained by research conducted among young people in Poland, differentiated by domicile, school type, gender and the financial situation of the family. The questionnaire consists of 80 questions, designed to examine consumer behaviour. As a result of factor analysis, 6 factors were discovered and named: materialism, impulsive consumption, ecological consumption, virtual consumption, virtual and real tribalism. The ease with which one can use computer program to conduct complex data analysis is not, unfortunately, coupled with the researchers' comprehension of the nature of the analyses being conducted. The aim of the article is to show the limitations of k-means cluster analysis, commonly used in market research to partition the consumers into segments, in psychology to detect individual differences, in cross-cultural research to categorize countries. Hierarchical analysis is an analytical technique resolving a problem often encountered in multilevel data.
