The objective of this study is to determine the reliability and validity of a clinical measurement for functional leg-length discrepancy (LLD) using the level and paper thickness correction (LPC) method to determine intra-rater and inter-rater reliability and validity. We induced a simulated LLD (5-30 mm) for each subject twice in a block-simulating group (n=17), none of whom had an apparent LLD. The X-ray group (n=7), who had LLD, were measured using radiographs to measure the LLD. The paper follows the idea of heterodox economists that a cost-plus price is above all a reproductive price and growth price. The authors apply a firm-level model of markup determination which, in line with theory and empirical evidence, contains proposed firm-specific determinants of the markup, including the firm’s planned growth. The positive firm-level relationship between growth and markup that is found in data for Slovenian manufacturing firms implies that retained profits gathered via the markup are an important source of growth financing and that the investment decisions of Slovenian manufacturing firms affect their pricing policy and decisions on the markup …

In March 2008, the Supreme Court decided Snyder v. Louisiana, the latest in the line of progeny of Batson v. Kentucky. This Note demonstrates that Snyder is part of a historical pattern of Supreme Court decisions concerning the use of peremptory challenges in which the Court has moved away from permitting the unfettered use of the peremptory challenge in favor of stronger Equal Protection considerations. Snyder alters the requirements for trial judges in deciding Batson challenges by requiring them to provide some explanation of their reasons for accepting a prosecutor's justification of a peremptory challenge. The role of women in family businesses is explored in the paper. Although recognised as generally very important players, the role of women is oft en defined as invisible in business decision-making, supportive in men’s traditional business domains and only rarely adequately recognised and rewarded. The paper explores possible differences in the views of men and women who manage small family firms. Their attitudes opposing the traditional business roles of women, different views on managerial, ownership and transition issues and possible gender discrimination are examined. Non-mandatory business surveys generally suffer from low response rates and potential non-response bias. Achieving a response is most problematic in small- and medium-sized enterprises because of their scarce human resources. The problem becomes exacerbated in fast-growing companies – ‘gazelles’. The paper addresses the effectiveness of data collection efforts to achieve a response among the top Slovenian gazelles in 2008. We analyse the impact on response rates and data quality. Finally, we look for evidence of non-response bias.

Trust And The Successful Coordination Of Sme Co-Operation – An Empirical Study In Slovenia, Matthias Fink, Alexander Kessler, Mojca Duh, Jernej Belak, Richard Lang

This paper aims to investigate the role of trust and test the impact of trust on performance in the context of co-operation between small- and medium-sized enterprises (‘SMEs’) in a transition country. Based on a sample of 122 Slovenian SMEs, an analysis based on OLS regression reveals that trust does have a strong impact on performance. We thereby identify trust as a powerful co-ordinating mechanism for SME relationships involving co-operation in transition economies.

Sustaining The Challenge From The Outskirts: City Centre Retail Viability In Ljubljana, Slovenia, Andreja Cirman, Marko Pahor

Like many other cities, Ljubljana is no exception to changes in its retail landscape. With retail suburbanisation, the city centre's monopoly as a shopping district has been lost. Our paper studies customer-perceived shopping area attributes and their impacts on patronage. The conceptual framework is set up to investigate factors that draw consumers to different shopping areas. The model was tested on a sample of consumers to evaluate the importance of various shopping area attributes and their performance in two decentralised shopping areas and the downtown shopping area in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The purpose of this article is to present the research results of a study on the impact of the drivers of logistics outsourcing performance: involvement, knowledge sharing, and innovation. The sample was derived from companies in the Slovenian market who choose to outsource their logistics services to logistics service providers. The article also attempts to contribute to the theoretical and methodological findings and managerial implications in logistics outsourcing discussions. Ninety-eight percent of all U.S. government communications travel over civilian-owned-and-operated networks. Additionally, the government relies almost completely on civilian providers for computer software and hardware products, services, and maintenance. This near-complete intermixing of civilian and military computer infrastructure makes many of those civilian objects and providers legitimate targets under the law of armed conflict. Other civilian networks, services, and communications may suffer collateral damage from legitimate attacks on government targets. To protect those civilian objects and providers from the effects of attacks, the law of armed conflict requires a state to segregate its military assets from the civilian population and …

For several years now, the question of “trademark use” has taken center stage in the debate over trademark liability of online intermediaries. Doctrinally, the debate addresses whether the Lanham Act places any limit on the types of “use” of trademarks that can subject one to a claim of infringement. The real conflict, however, has occurred at the normative level: whatever the Lanham Act says or does not say about trademark use, should trademark law limit the definition of infringement to situations in which the defendant has used the mark to brand its own products?

The vexing question of optimal glucose level in the intensive care unit has long perplexed intensivists. Hyperglycemia is a natural response to physiologic stress,1 and in the critically ill patient has been attributed to inflammatory processes, insulin counter-regulatory hormones, organ dysfunction, iatrogenic carbohydrate or medication related hyperglycemia, and insulin resistance as evidenced by concurrently elevated insulin levels.1 Hyperglycemia occurs in 50-75% of patients admitted to an ICU, and has been associated with various adverse outcomes including increased mortality, organ dysfunction, susceptibility to infections, and neurological complications.1,2 On the cellular level, tissue/organ damage is theorized to be mediated via the production …

Anemia And Blood Transfusion In Subarachnoid Hemorrhage, Monisha Kumar

Anemia is a common problem among critically ill patients. Nearly two thirds of patients are anemic on admission to the intensive care unit (ICU)1 and between 70-95% of patients develop anemia by day 3.2,3 Lower hemoglobin levels decrease the oxygen carrying capacity of blood and may reduce tissue oxygenation. This is particularly detrimental for patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) as they are subject to increased metabolic demand for oxygen from cerebral ischemia. The optimal hemoglobin concentration in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is unknown. Thirty per cent of SAH patients have a hemoglobin <10 g/dl during hospitalization.4 Many patients are routinely hemodiluted as a part of hypertensive, hypervolemic, hemodilution (triple H) therapy. Hemodilution may improve blood rheology, but it has also been shown to impair brain tissue oxygenation and increase secondary brain injury.5

Background: Hyperhidrosis is a disorder characterized by excessive sweating, predominantly of the hands, axillae, and feet. Patients suffering from severe hyperhidrosis who have not responded well to non-invasive treatments such as botulinum toxin injections or prescription antiperspirants may undergo an endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS). An ETS involves cauterizing or, more recently, clipping the sympathetic nerves at the T2-T3 vertebral level just lateral to the sympathetic trunk. The procedure generally decreases the amount of sweating in the original problematic area; however, a major side effect is compensatory sweating and increased total body sweating. Patient satisfaction with this procedure has been reported …
