Jewell L. Osterholm was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery in 1974, and left the Chairmanship in 1994. Recently, he gave a series of workshops on performing neurological examinations. These workshops are being archived on DVD so future residents can benefit from Dr. Osterholm’s training. The emphasis is on interviewing and observing the patient; the only specialized devices used are the stethoscope and the reflex hammer

Introduction: Expandable cages have been utilized as an option for immediate spinal stabilization after vertebrectomy. However, long-term follow-up in the oncology population has not been studied, and results remain unclear. This single-institution series of patients represents our success in utilizing expandable cages. Methods: A retrospective chart review for patients with spinal metastasis treated with expandable cages between 2001 and 2006 was performed with IRB approval. Data regarding date of anterior and posterior surgery, immediate postoperative neurological status versus preoperative status, revision, equipment status, pseudoarthrosis, time to ambulation, and mortality were gathered and analyzed. Physicians may have first known what an aneurysm was as far back as the 14th Century BC in Egypt1, but by the early 19th century they were still trying to find satisfactory options for treating large or surgically inaccessible aneurysms.4,5 One of the techniques being considered was inserting a needle to provoke formation of a clot that would close off the aneurysm. The proof that this technique could work was discovered by C. H. Moore in 1864, during an autopsy of a gunshot victim. The bullet, lodged in the ascending aorta, was embedded in fibrin. Thoracolumbar And Lumbar Burst Fractures, Sussan Salas

Approximately 79,000 spinal fractures occur annually in the United States. Roughly three out of every four fractures involve either the thoracic or the lumbar spine1,2. The most common site of injury in the thoracic and lumbar spine is the thoracolumbar junction, the mechanical transition zone between the relatively rigid thoracic spine and the more flexible lumbar region35. The thoracolumbar junction receives 35 to 45% of the torsional and shear forces on the spine. This flexibility, combined with the curvature arising from biomechanical adaption to upright posture, makes the thoracolumbar junction more prone to injury than the lumbar spine 6.

Background: Grape powdery mildew is caused by the North American native pathogen Erysiphe necator. Eurasian Vitis vinifera varieties were all believed to be susceptible. REN1 is the first resistance gene naturally found in cultivated plants of Vitis vinifera.

Results: REN1 is present in 'Kishmish vatkana' and 'Dzhandzhal kara', two grapevines documented in Central Asia since the 1920's. These cultivars have a second-degree relationship (half sibs, grandparent-grandchild, or avuncular), and share by descent the chromosome on which the resistance allele REN1 is located. The Acidic Domains Of The Toc159 Chloroplast Preprotein Receptor Family Are Instrinsically Disordered Protein Domains, Lynn G.L. Richardson, Masoud Jelokhani-Niaraki, Matthew D. Smith

Background: The Toc159 family of proteins serve as receptors for chloroplast-destined preproteins. They directly bind to transit peptides, and exhibit preprotein substrate selectivity conferred by an unknown mechanism. The Toc159 receptors each include three domains: C-terminal membrane, central GTPase, and N-terminal acidic (A-) domains. Although the function(s) of the A-domain remains largely unknown, the amino acid sequences are most variable within these domains, suggesting they may contribute to the functional specificity of the receptors.

Results: The physicochemical properties of the A-domains are characteristic of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs). Using CD spectroscopy we show that the A-domains of two Arabidopsis Toc159 …

Small-scale enterprises within Nairobi have witnessed a dramatic change as a result of Business Clustering in premises commonly known as "exhibition halls". This study sought to establish the various competitive strategies adopted and to establish the relationship between factors determining their competitiveness. The firms were sole traders firms, partnerships and family business units. An analysis of the activities of small-scale enterprises revealed the various strategies and relationships that were the determinants of competition. A key challenge in entrepreneurship and private sector development is the provision of sustainable Business Development Services (BDS), particularly for micro and small enterprises. This study investigates how sustainability of BDS can be achieved, and how some providers manage to develop sustainable BDS and not others, using Grounded Theory. The findings suggest that there are at least nine specific demand-and-supply-side gaps in the BDS market which providers need to identify and fill if they are to become sustainable.
