Abstract
Corn-ethanol production is expanding rapidly with the adoption of improved technologies to increase energy efficiency and profitability in crop production, ethanol conversion, and coproduct use. Life cycle assessment can evaluate the impact of these changes on environmental performance metrics. To this end, we analyzed the life cycles of corn-ethanol systems accounting for the majority of U.S. capacity to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy efficiencies on the basis of updated values for crop management and yields, biorefinery operation, and coproduct utilization. Direct-effect GHG emissions were estimated to be equivalent to a 48% to 59% reduction compared to gasoline, …

Video-Based Mapping Of Oyster Bottom In The Upper Piscataqua River, Sturgeon Creek, And Spruce Creek, Raymond E. Grizzle, Krystin M. Ward
PREP Reports & Publications
Towed, underwater videography was used to map and characterize the extent of oyster bottom in the upper Piscataqua River, Sturgeon Creek, and Spruce Creek. Georeferenced video imagery was obtained on five different days in summer and fall 2008. Significant shell bottom (with live oysters in most areas) was found only in the upper Piscataqua River in two areas: (1) the general location of the previously mapped (2003) upper Piscataqua River reef, and (2) in the Piscataqua River at the mouth of Sturgeon Creek. The Sturgeon Creek reef was classified into low and high density shell which covered a total area …

The use of race in biomedical research has, for decades, been a source of social controversy. However, recent events, such as the adoption of racially targeted pharmaceuticals, have raised the profile of the race issue. In addition, we are entering an era in which genomic research is increasingly focused on the nature and extent of human genetic variation, often examined by population, which leads to heightened potential for misunderstandings or misuse of terms concerning genetic variation and race. Here, we draw together the perspectives of participants in a recent interdisciplinary workshop on ancestry and health in medicine in order to …

Background
Genomic discovery in oat and its application to oat improvement have been hindered by a lack of genetic markers common to different genetic maps, and by the difficulty of conducting whole-genome analysis using high-throughput markers. This study was intended to develop, characterize, and apply a large set of oat genetic markers based on Diversity Array Technology (DArT).
Results
Approximately 19,000 genomic clones were isolated from complexity-reduced genomic representations of pooled DNA samples from 60 oat varieties of global origin. These were screened on three discovery arrays, with more than 2000 polymorphic markers being identified for use in this study, …

The Anchor: 2009
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Southern Black Women: Their Lived Realities, Robin M. Boylorn
Southern Black Women: Their Lived Realities, Robin M. Boylorn
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Focusing on the lived experiences of ten rural black women in a familial community in central North Carolina, this project documents the mundane and extraordinary events of their lives and how they create meaningful lives through storytelling. Theoretically grounded in black feminist thought, intersectionality theory and muted group theory the investigation calls for the use of storytelling and poetry to understand how rural black women experience, live, and communicate their lives. Merging the experiences of participants with the researcher, the study also considers the ethical implications of being an insider-outsider and offers suggestions for engaging in creative scholarship. The author …

Multi-Component Evaluation To Minimize The Spread Of Aquatic Invasive Seaweeds, Harmful Algal Bloom Microalgae, And Invertebrates Via The Live Bait Vector In Long Island Sound, Charles Yarish, Robert Whitlatch, George Kraemer, Senjie Lin
Publications
The goal of the project was to protect guard Long Island Sound from the introduction of non-native organisms that may be imported via fishing bait worms and the seaweed packing material known as wormweed (Ascophyllum nodosum). The project examined bait for non-native invertebrate animals, macroalgae (also known as seaweeds), and harmful, toxin-producing microalgae. Bait was purchased from retail bait shops at locations ranging from northeastern Long Island Sound along the Connecticut shoreline to the southwestern part of the Sound in Long Island. Using a combination of visual and microscopic inspection, and sophisticated molecular biological techniques to detect the presence of …

Human Predators Outpace Other Agents Of Trait Change In The Wild, Chris T. Darimont, Stephanie M. Carlson, Michael T. Kinnison, Paul C. Paquet, Thomas E. Reimchen, Christopher C. Wilmers
Nonindigenous Pests and Biological Invasions Collection
The observable traits of wild populations are continually shaped and reshaped by the environment and numerous agents of natural selection, including predators. In stark contrast with most predators, humans now typically exploit high proportions of prey populations and target large, reproductive-aged adults. Consequently, organisms subject to consistent and strong ‘harvest selection’ by fishers, hunters, and plant harvesters may be expected to show particularly rapid and dramatic changes in phenotype. However, a comparison of the rate at which phenotypic changes in exploited taxa occurs relative to other systems has never been undertaken. Here, we show that average phenotypic changes in 40 …

Protein Nutrition Of Southern Plains Small Mammals: Immune Response To Variation In Maternal And Offspring Dietary Nitrogen, James A. Wilson, Jennifer L. Parsons, Eric E. Jorgensen
Biology Faculty Publications
Maternal nutrition during pregnancy and postnatal offspring nutrition may influence offspring traits. We investigated the effects of maternal and post weaning offspring dietary nitrogen on immune function and hematology in two species of rodent: the hispid cotton rat (Sigmodon hispidus), a primarily herbivorous rodent, and the fulvous harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys fulvescens), an omnivore. These two species responded differently to the same levels of treatment, with cotton rats primarily influenced by maternal diet and harvest mice by post weaning offspring diet. Cotton rats born to mothers on high-nitrogen diets had lower values of mean corpuscle volume and hemoglobin and greater concentrations …

Studies Of Dna Hybridization Reactions And Applications In Genetic Assays, Fidelis Manyanga
Dissertations and Theses
The intent of this study was to investigate two fundamental aspects of short DNA duplex stability and how that stability differs for duplex molecules consisting of either all perfect match Watson/Crick base pairs or a mixture of perfect match Watson/Crick base pairs and mismatch base pairs. Theoretical and experimental investigations of the origins of the nucleation term in the free energy of DNA duplex formation were revisited. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔG, ΔH, Δ S and Tm) of short DNA/DNA duplexes ranging in length from 6 to 35 base pairs were systematically evaluated by Differential Scanning Calorimetry …
