Aggregation Of Montmorillonite And Organic Matter In Aqueous Media Containing Artificial Seawater, Yoko Furukawa, Janet L. Watkins, Jinwook Kim, Kenneth J. Curry, Richard H. Bennett Jan 2009

Aggregation Of Montmorillonite And Organic Matter In Aqueous Media Containing Artificial Seawater, Yoko Furukawa, Janet L. Watkins, Jinwook Kim, Kenneth J. Curry, Richard H. Bennett

Faculty Publications

Background

The dispersion-aggregation behaviors of suspended colloids in rivers and estuaries are affected by the compositions of suspended materials (i.e., clay minerals vs. organic macromolecules) and salinity. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the dispersion and aggregation mechanisms of suspended particles under simulated river and estuarine conditions. The average hydrodynamic diameters of suspended particles (representing degree of aggregation) and zeta potential (representing the electrokinetic properties of suspended colloids and aggregates) were determined for systems containing suspended montmorillonite, humic acid, and/or chitin at the circumneutral pH over a range of salinity (0 – 7.2 psu).

Results

The montmorillonite-only system increased the …

Ca2+ Extrusion By Ncx Is Compromised In Olfactory Sensory Neurons Of Omp-/- Mice, Hyun J. Kwon, Jae Hyung Koo, Frank Zufall, Trese Leinders-Zufall, Frank L. Margolis

Faculty Publications

Background: The role of olfactory marker protein (OMP), a hallmark of mature olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs), has been poorly understood since its discovery. The electrophysiological and behavioral phenotypes of OMP knockout mice indicated that OMP influences olfactory signal transduction. However, the mechanism by which this occurs remained unknown. Principal Findings: We used intact olfactory epithelium obtained from WT and OMP-/- mice to monitor the Ca2+ dynamics induced by the activation of cyclic nucleotide-gated channels, voltage-operated Ca2+ channels, or Ca2+ stores in single dendritic knobs of OSNs. Our data suggested that OMP could act to modulate the Ca2+-homeostasis in these neurons …

The Specificity Of The Search Template, Mary J. Bravo, Hany Farid Jan 2009

The Specificity Of The Search Template, Mary J. Bravo, Hany Farid

Dartmouth Scholarship

When searching for a target object, observers use an internal representation of the target's appearance as a search template. This study used naturalistic stimuli to examine the specificity of this template. Observers first learned several name-image pairs; they then participated in a search experiment in which the names served as cues and the images served as targets. To test whether the observers searched for the targets using an exact image template, we included targets that were transformations of the studied image and targets that belonged to the same subordinate-level category as the studied image. The same stimuli were also used …

Eelgrass Mapping Great Bay Estuary For 1981, Frederick T. Short Jan 2009

Eelgrass Mapping Great Bay Estuary For 1981, Frederick T. Short

PREP Reports & Publications

The methods for this project followed the procedures specified in the approved QA Project Plan (Short and Trowbridge, 2003). Eelgrass meadow polygons for 1981 were mapped from USDA black-and-white aerial photographs, on file at the Strafford County and Rockingham County (NH) offices. The photographs were scanned and analyzed digitally after “rubber sheeting” the images to fit the Great Bay Estuary base map. The 1981 photographs were not ortho-photographs and some distortion across each photograph was evident. To minimize this effect, multiple photographs for each area were used to geo-reference actual locations on the eelgrass distribution map. Some areas of the …

"I Feel Fat" : How Do Therapists Help Recovering Female Anorectic Clients Overcome Body Image Issues?, Holly G. Light

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to explore how therapists help their adult, female anorectic clients (who are post-medical stabilization and have committed to some therapeutic level of treatment and recovery) overcome body image issues related to the pursuit of thinness prescribed by Western culture and the media. Through interviews with ten therapists who had extensive experience working with anorectic women in recovery, this exploratory study examined clinicians' experiences with clients' body image issues and chief complaints, their strategies for treating the body image disturbance in their clients, their perceptions of what factors help someone to fully recover and what the most …

Sugar And Spice : The Hidden World Of Pre-Adolescent Female Aggression, Sarah Crofton Winsor Jan 2009

Sugar And Spice : The Hidden World Of Pre-Adolescent Female Aggression, Sarah Crofton Winsor

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This thesis proposes that relational theory offers an appropriate and effective framework for both prevention and intervention in situations of covert bullying behavior among pre-adolescent females. After a review of recent literature about the phenomenon of pre-adolescent female bullying, the thesis describes the relational theory advocated by feminist psychology professionals in the last thirty years as an alternative understanding of female social and emotional development that contrasts with the previously dominant male-based paradigm. Following the suggestions of relational theorists, the thesis proposes a new understanding of the specific covert bullying behaviors of young girls that is based on insights into …

Do The Pikler And Rie Methods Promote Infant-Parent Attachment?, Mary Triulzi Jan 2009

Do The Pikler And Rie Methods Promote Infant-Parent Attachment?, Mary Triulzi

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This thesis explores Pikler and Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE) methods of parenting enhancement and intervention in an attempt to discover whether they promote attachment in the first three years of a child's life. I report on the Pikler and RIE literature, as well as past and current attachment theory and research. I begin with the work of Bowlby, Ainsworth, and Main and progress to the study of neurobiological, genealogy, adult attachment styles, coping and resiliency, and internal mental states. In the 1946, post-WWII, Emmi Pikler created an orphanage in Budapest, Hungary, The Pikler Institute, beginning a unique approach to …

Using Least Median Of Squares For Structural Superposition Of Flexible Proteins, Yu-Shen Liu, Yi Fang, Karthik Ramani Jan 2009

Using Least Median Of Squares For Structural Superposition Of Flexible Proteins, Yu-Shen Liu, Yi Fang, Karthik Ramani

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Background

The conventional superposition methods use an ordinary least squares (LS) fit for structural comparison of two different conformations of the same protein. The main problem of the LS fit that it is sensitive to outliers, i.e. large displacements of the original structures superimposed.

Results

To overcome this problem, we present a new algorithm to overlap two protein conformations by their atomic coordinates using a robust statistics technique: least median of squares (LMS). In order to effectively approximate the LMS optimization, the forward search technique is utilized. Our algorithm can automatically detect and superimpose the rigid core regions of two …

Biomedical Word Sense Disambiguation With Ontologies And Metadata: Automation Meets Accuracy, Dimitra Alexopoulou, Bill Andreopoulos, Heiko Dietze, Andreas Doms, Fabien Gandon, Jörg Hakenberg, Khaled Khelif, Michael Schroeder, Thomas Wächter Jan 2009

Biomedical Word Sense Disambiguation With Ontologies And Metadata: Automation Meets Accuracy, Dimitra Alexopoulou, Bill Andreopoulos, Heiko Dietze, Andreas Doms, Fabien Gandon, Jörg Hakenberg, Khaled Khelif, Michael Schroeder, Thomas Wächter

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

BackgroundOntology term labels can be ambiguous and have multiple senses. While this is no problem for human annotators, it is a challenge to automated methods, which identify ontology terms in text. Classical approaches to word sense disambiguation use co-occurring words or terms. However, most treat ontologies as simple terminologies, without making use of the ontology structure or the semantic similarity between terms. Another useful source of information for disambiguation are metadata. Here, we systematically compare three approaches to word sense disambiguation, which use ontologies and metadata, respectively.ResultsThe 'Closest Sense' method assumes that the ontology defines multiple senses of the term. …
