Design Fabrication And Calibration Of Mems Actuators For In-Situ Materials Testing, Khawar Abbas Jan 2009

Design Fabrication And Calibration Of Mems Actuators For In-Situ Materials Testing, Khawar Abbas

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Many MEMS devices utilize thin metallic films as mechanical structures. The elastic and plastic properties of these thin films (thickness < 1μm) are significantly different from those of the bulk material. At these scales the volume fraction of material defects such as: grain boundaries, dislocations and interstitials become quite significant and become a chief contributor the physical and mechanical material properties of the thin films. Aluminum (Al), Copper (Cu), Nickel (Ni) and Gold (Au) are popular thin film materials used in MEMS/NEMS. Various studies have been conducted in recent years to study the mechanical properties of freestanding thin films in situ in TEM to study their failure mechanisms. Some of these studies utilize MEMS devices as actuators. These actuators are often co-fabricated with the specimen being tested therefore limiting the type of specimen that could be tested. Also these MEMS actuators are almost never traceably calibrated and their response is calculated. This thesis describes the design and fabrication process of a MEMS actuator for materials testing in-situ in TEM. The actuator is fabricated independent of the specimen. A setup was designed to calibrate these devices with a method that can be traced back to NIST standards. It has been shown that the calibrated response of these MEMS actuators is different from its calculated response and the use of un-calibrated devices for materials testing can lead to misleading results.

The Role Of Nf-Κb In Pparα-Mediated Hepatocarcinogenesis, Howard P. Glauert, Karen Calfee-Mason, Yixin Li, Vani Nilakantan, Michelle L. Twaroski, Job Tharappel, Brett T. Spear Jan 2009

The Role Of Nf-Κb In Pparα-Mediated Hepatocarcinogenesis, Howard P. Glauert, Karen Calfee-Mason, Yixin Li, Vani Nilakantan, Michelle L. Twaroski, Job Tharappel, Brett T. Spear

Graduate Center for Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

In this review, the role of NF-kappaB in the induction of hepatocarcinogenesis by peroxisome proliferators is examined. The administration of peroxisome proliferators for more than a three-day period leads to the activation of NF-kappaB in the livers of rats and mice. On the other hand, peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-alpha (PPARalpha) activation in non-hepatic tissues can lead to the inhibition of NF-kappaB activation. Several lines of evidence support the hypothesis that the activation of NF-kappaB by peroxisome proliferators in the liver is mediated by oxidative stress. The role of NF-kappaB in peroxisome proliferator-induced hepatocarcinogenesis has been examined using NF-kappaB knockout models. …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Cerium-Doped Lanthanum Halide Colloidal Nanocrystals, Krishnaprasad Sankar

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Cerium-doped bulk lanthanum halide compounds are attractive in the field of high-energy radiation detection due to their interesting properties that include efficient radiation absorption, highly luminescent activator (cerium) emission through atomic transitions, host lattice protecting activators to prevent luminescence quenching, and fast decay-time radiative transitions between cerium levels. Cerium-doped bulk lanthanum bromide is reported to have a light yield of 60,000 photons/MeV, 2.5% full-width-to-half-maximum energy resolution (variation in emission light yield to absorbed gamma energy) for 662 keV gamma rays, 25 ns short decay time, and a density of 5.3 g/cm3 with 22 mm attenuation length for 511 keV gamma …

How Do Teachers Understand And Act On Policy Directives To Close The Gender Achievement Gap In Writing Present In State Test Scores?, Michael Stanley Jan 2009

How Do Teachers Understand And Act On Policy Directives To Close The Gender Achievement Gap In Writing Present In State Test Scores?, Michael Stanley

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This qualitative study examined how a group of 9, predominately white, middle-school writing teachers thought about struggling student writers and made sense of national and district policy mandates to close the racial and gender achievement gaps present in state test scores. Data from focus group discussions and one-on-one interviews revealed findings about the teachers interactions with school leadership, how they understood and acted upon achievement gaps in writing, and their collaboration as a team of educators. Confusion and frustration typified the teachers' interactions with school leadership as a number of top-down mandates through Professional Learning Teams and disappointing interactions regarding …

Predictors Of Discrepancies In Parents’ And Children’S Reports Of Child Emotion Regulation, Shannon Hourigan Jan 2009

Predictors Of Discrepancies In Parents’ And Children’S Reports Of Child Emotion Regulation, Shannon Hourigan

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to effectively regulate one’s emotions has been linked with many aspects of well-being. However, disagreement in parents’ and children’s reports of children’s emotion regulation presents significant measurement and conceptual challenges. This investigation aimed to identify predictors of these discrepancies from among demographic, psychopathology, and child emotional awareness measures and to examine patterns of discrepancies among three emotion types (i.e., anger, sadness, and worry) and three regulation “strategies” (i.e., inhibition, dysregulated expression, and coping). Sixty-one mother-child dyads (41 girls, mean age 9.3 years) participated. As hypothesized, age, child and parent report of psychopathology, and poor emotion awareness all emerged …

Terrorism And Crime: Critical Linkages, James H. Anderson, Stephen R. Bowers Jan 2009

Terrorism And Crime: Critical Linkages, James H. Anderson, Stephen R. Bowers

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper is an effort to analyze the connection between failed new nation states, crime, and terrorism. Terrorist-criminal links in Former Soviet Union (FSU) countries pose one of the greatest potential threats to U.S. security, as many of these states are rent with economic instability, political turmoil, and religious fervor. Given sufficient profit incentives, criminal groups may be tempted to steal nuclear materials from poorly guarded Russian facilities and sell them to terrorist groups. The flight of Al Qaeda affiliates from Afghanistan into Central Asia following the US-led military intervention in 2001 has exacerbated this problem.

Final Report: Reproduction And Fish Hosts Of The Ouachita Rock Pocketbook, Arkansia Wheeleri, M. Christopher Barnhart Jan 2009

Final Report: Reproduction And Fish Hosts Of The Ouachita Rock Pocketbook, Arkansia Wheeleri, M. Christopher Barnhart

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Fertilization success, suitable host fish, and lab culture methods were examined in the federally endangered Arkansas rock pocketbook mussel, Arkansia wheeleri. The proportion of fertilization in the two brooding females recovered was 36.0% and 60.3%. Incomplete fertilization presumably results from low population density limiting availability of sperm. Eight fish species were tested as hosts for the glochidia larvae. The species and the percent successful metamorphosis of attached glochidia were: golden shiner (31%), dusky-stripe shiner (11%), freshwater drum (3%), blue catfish (0%), largemouth bass (0%), hybrid sunfish (0%), orangespotted sunfish (0%), and walleye (0%). Metamorphosis was complete within 10 days at …

Correlates Of Body Depilation In Men, Michael Boroughs Jan 2009

Correlates Of Body Depilation In Men, Michael Boroughs

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Body depilation is a relatively new area of research inquiry. Although women in many industrialized cultures have engaged in body depilation for some time, this behavior has been documented only recently in men. While originally thought to be the practice of just a small percentage of men, recent studies suggest that more men engage in body depilation than had been previously hypothesized (Boroughs & Thompson, 2002; Boroughs, Cafri, & Thompson, 2005; Martins, Tiggemann, & Churchett, 2008; Tiggemann, Martins, & Churchett, 2008). Nevertheless, this area of research is understudied and the relationship between body depilation and men's overall body image is …

Evaluation Of Biofuel Driven Irrigation Pumps And/Or Electric Generators For Use During Peak Electricity Demand, Milford Hanna Jan 2009

Evaluation Of Biofuel Driven Irrigation Pumps And/Or Electric Generators For Use During Peak Electricity Demand, Milford Hanna

Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research: White Papers and Presentations

The goal of this research is to support the development of a biofuel power unit industry in Nebraska to increase the use of agricultural resources, crops and the resulting biofuels that are produced in the region. Two Nebraska companies developed commercially available technologies to utilize denatured ethanol and other biofuels in industrial power‐units. The successful validation and demonstration of these technologies will support adaptation in water pumping and electrical generation plant applications. It will also document exhaust emissions and compare operating cost with traditional engines and fuels. These technologies could reduce peak load electrical energy demand resulting from electrical powered …

Water, Energy And Agriculture Initiative Jan 2009

Water, Energy And Agriculture Initiative

Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research: White Papers and Presentations

Rapid expansion of the biofuel industry provides exciting opportunities for economic growth and development in rural Nebraska. Realizing the full benefits of this opportunity and ensuring its long‐term viability depends on continued access to adequate supplies of water, electrical energy, and biofuel feedstock crops at reasonable cost. For example, about 70 percent of all corn and 50 percent of soybeans produced in Nebraska comes from irrigated land, and electrical energy for pumping irrigation water represents a major component of peak‐load energy demand in the state. Reducing this peak‐load electrical demand and consumption is essential for reducing the need for new …

Optimization Of Irrigation Efficiency Of Center‐Pivot Systems Using Spatial And Temporal Data Integration, Viacheslav Adamchuk Jan 2009

Optimization Of Irrigation Efficiency Of Center‐Pivot Systems Using Spatial And Temporal Data Integration, Viacheslav Adamchuk

Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research: White Papers and Presentations

The efficiency of a center pivot irrigation system is greatly dependent on the ability to provide the water supply needed to meet the demands of the rowing crop. While limited water supplies may educe crop yield due to water stress, excessive irrigation may result in wasted resources and, if extreme, may also reduce yields. The optimized need for irrigation water changes temporally and spatially. Various methods have been deployed to focus on either level of variability. Thus, soil sensor telemetry and crop modeling frequently allow improved irrigation scheduling. On the other hand, dense‐resolution proximal soil sensing allows identifying spatial variability …
