Sustainable Site Remediation : A Life Cycle Assessment Approach, Harnoor Dhaliwal
Sustainable Site Remediation : A Life Cycle Assessment Approach, Harnoor Dhaliwal
Theses
Remediation of contaminated areas is often a resource-intensive activity that itself can create environmental burdens. Life cycle assessment (LCA) was used as a tool to examine the environmental impacts associated with remediation activities. A hypothetical contaminated site with five remediation alternatives was developed for this analysis. The results of Life cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) indicated that greater site activity in terms of transportation, material and equipment use translated into higher environmental impacts.
A sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate the environmental impacts further in different time horizons. The results showed that choice of time horizon can have a significant effect …
Rna Secondary Structure Detection Programs With An Emphasis On Covariance Models, Justin Slotman
Rna Secondary Structure Detection Programs With An Emphasis On Covariance Models, Justin Slotman
Theses
RNA secondary structure prediction requires a different approach from traditional alignment methods. Functional RNAs often have their secondary structure better conserved than their primary structure. Covariance models, probabilistic models that utilize stochastic-context-free grammars, are one approach. CMs allow for homology to be detected where purely sequence-based methods would fail. A background on CMs is given, as well as a background of the major classes of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). Comparisons are made between some CM-using tools (the Infernal suite and CMfinder) and some other RNA secondary structure tools (CARNAC, miRNAminer, Pfold, Mfold) as well as between Infernal and the primary alignment …

BACKGROUND: RNA interference (RNAi) mediated by small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) or short hairpin RNAs (shRNAs) has become a powerful technique for eukaryotic gene knockdown. siRNA GC-content negatively correlates with RNAi efficiency, and it is of interest to have a convincing mechanistic interpretation of this observation. We here examine this issue by considering the secondary structures for both the target messenger RNA (mRNA) and the siRNA guide strand. RESULTS: By analyzing a unique homogeneous data set of 101 shRNAs targeted to 100 endogenous human genes, we find that: 1) target site accessibility is more important than GC-content for efficient RNAi; 2) …

Paramagnetic Resonance Studies Of Bistrispyrazolylborate Cobalt(Ii) And Related Derivatives, William K. Myers
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Herein, a systematic frozen solution electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) study of high-spin Co(II) complexes is reported to demonstrate the efficacy of methyl substitutions as a means of separating dipolar and contact coupling, and further, to increase the utility of high-spin Co(II) as a spectroscopic probe for the ubiquitous, but spectroscopically-silent Zn(II) metalloenzymes. High-spin (hs) Co(II) has been subject of paramagnetic resonance studies for over 50 years and has been used as a spectroscopic probe for Zn metalloenzymes for over 35 years. However, as will be seen, the inherent complexity of the electronic properties of the cobaltous ion remains to be …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene, TNT, is an explosive used in munitions production that is known to cause both aplastic and hemolytic anemia in exposed workers. Deaths have been reported secondary to both varieties of anemia. Studies have shown that TNT systemic absorption is significant by both the respiratory and dermal routes. A literature review revealed that the most recent review article on TNT exposure arguing for a TWA drop from the PEL to the TLV was in 1977 -- this article cited anemia issues in addition to other untoward effects of TNT. No studies encountered looked at hemoglobin change or anemia cases in …
The Role Of Water And Other Resources In The Invasion Of Rubus Armeniacus In Pacific Northwest Ecosystems, Joshua Sundance Caplan
The Role Of Water And Other Resources In The Invasion Of Rubus Armeniacus In Pacific Northwest Ecosystems, Joshua Sundance Caplan
Dissertations and Theses
The factors influencing the invasive success of Rubus armeniacus (Himalayan blackberry) in the Pacific Northwest of North America are only partly understood, but have important implications for its management and for our understanding of the processes driving invasive plant proliferation in regions with seasonally fluctuating resources. I identified patterns of R. armeniacus occurrence and growth under widely ranging soil and light conditions in western Oregon. I found that light availability was a primary determinant of R. armeniacus occurrence and growth. I also found that R. armeniacus was tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions, notably coarse texture, and could …
