Research suggests that many public school teachers are not prepared to deal with the growing number of diverse students in the schools. Questions are raised by researchers about the ability of the current teaching force to adequately meet the needs of the growing number of students of Color in the schools. Small-scale qualitative studies find that many White teachers feel unsure of their ability to teach students of Color, tend to hold stereotypical beliefs about urban students and/ or students of Color, and tend to use cultural deficiency models for explaining their academic performance. To date, no quantitative studies have …

We used a combined atomic force microscope (AFM)/fluorescence microscope technique to study the mechanical properties of individual, electrospun fibrinogen fibers in aqueous buffer. Fibers (average diameter 208 nm) were suspended over 12 μm-wide grooves in a striated, transparent substrate. The AFM, situated above the sample, was used to laterally stretch the fibers and to measure the applied force. The fluorescence microscope, situated below the sample, was used to visualize the stretching process. The fibers could be stretched to 2.3 times their original length before breaking; the breaking stress was 22·106 Pa. We collected incremental stress-strain curves to determine the …
Developmental Considerations And Acculturation Of Children: Measures And Issues, Francesca Lopez
Developmental Considerations And Acculturation Of Children: Measures And Issues, Francesca Lopez
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
This article presents the secondary validation of the Brief Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans-II (Brief ARSMA-II) for use with children—carried out using two samples of Mexican-descent children (ages = 9-11) from two states ( N = 295). The Brief ARSMA-II was originally normed on adolescents and adults but has been validated and used with children. Ethnic identity development perspectives suggest that the interpretation of scores derived from acculturation measures normed on adolescents and adults may not extend accurately to children. Convergent validity and differential discrimination between groups were examined using scores on the Brief ARSMA-II; scores on an acculturation …

In Silico Drug Design Of Potential Novel Anti Malarial Agents, Vishal Thovarai
Theses
This thesis project incorporates the principles of rational and computer aided drug design in the quest for an improved anti-malarial agent. The target, a pathway for isoprenoid biosynthesis (the deoxy-D-xylulose-5-phosphate (DOXP) pathway) occurs in the parasite plastid – the apicoplast, and among the factors that make it an excellent target for an anti-malarial agent is its uniqueness from the pathway in the host, thus accounting for its specificity and low toxicity. A library of 18 potential anti malarial analogues/ ligands were designed and tested in silico against the receptor using molecular docking. The analogue L ο (omicron) - {3-[acetyl(hydroxy)amino]-1-hydroxypropyl} phosphonic …

The Interaction Of Peptides With Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes, Poulami Barman
The Interaction Of Peptides With Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes, Poulami Barman
Theses
A literature study was conducted to review peptide adhesion to carbon nanotubes and they were found to be important in the drug designing industries. To attain target specificity CNTs (functionalized with DNA, peptides etc.) have been used as potential vector system. Prior studies show that single walled nanotubes (SWNTs) when functionalized with peptides have been proven to be better delivery systems than the previous vector delivery systems. Functionalized SWNTs can deliver the peptides to the specific target organs in the right concentration without having prominent toxic effect. Toxicity studies show that since the SWNTs have shorter half life periods most …

“Corrective Surgery” And The Americans With Disabilities Act, Jeannette Cox
“Corrective Surgery” And The Americans With Disabilities Act, Jeannette Cox
School of Law Faculty Publications
This Article challenges the assumption that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires persons with disabilities to undergo corrective surgery as a precondition to membership in the ADA's protected class. This issue is ripe for discussion because current efforts to amend the ADA, although not focused on the corrective surgery issue, will unsettle the current doctrine underpinning many courts' conclusions that an individual's decision to forgo available medical technology bars her from relief under the ADA. The article aims to make two contributions. First, it argues that the ADA's focus on reshaping cultural responses to disability suggests that individuals need …

Which Sry Locus Is The Hypertensive Y Chromosome Locus?, Monte E. Turner, Joel Farkas, Jeff Dunmire, Daniel Ely, Amy Milsted
Biology Faculty Research
The Y chromosome of the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) contains a genetic component that raises blood pressure compared with the Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) Y chromosome. This research tests the Sry gene complex as the hypertensive component of the SHR Y chromosome. The Sry loci were sequenced in 1 strain with a hypertensive Y chromosome (SHR/Akr) and 2 strains with a normotensive Y chromosome (SHR/Crl and WKY/Akr). Both SHR strains have 7 Sry loci, whereas the WKY strain has 6. The 6 loci in common between SHR and WKY strains were identical in the sequence compared (coding region, 392-bp 5' prime flanking, …

Conservation tillage systems that reduce soil erosion and maintain or increase soil carbon offer long-term benefits for producers in the inland Pacific Northwestern United States but could result in reduced grain yields due to increased pressure from weeds, disease, and insect pests. Our objective was to compare runoff, soil erosion, and crop yields from a conventional tillage, wheat-fallow two-year rotation and a no-till four-year rotation. The experiment was undertaken within a small watershed to provide results that would be repre¬sentative of conservation effectiveness at the field scale. Two neighboring drainages, 5.8 and 10.7 ha (14 and 26 ac), in the …

Soft Law As Delegation, Timothy L. Meyer
Soft Law As Delegation, Timothy L. Meyer
Scholarly Works
This article examines one of the most important trends in international legal governance since the end of the Second World War: the rise of "soft law," or legally non-binding instruments. Scholars studying the design of international agreements have long puzzled over why states use soft law. The decision to make an agreement or obligation legally binding is within the control of the states negotiating the content of the legal obligations. Basic contract theory predicts that parties to a contract would want their agreement to be as credible as possible, to ensure optimal incentives to perform. It is therefore odd that …

Differential Drinking Patterns Of Family History Positive And Family History Negative First Semester College Females, Joseph W. Labrie, Shannon R. Kenney, Andrew Lac, Savannah F. Migliuri
Heads Up!
Objective
This study compares the natural drinking patterns of family history positive and family history negative women during their first semester of college, a transitional period known to coincide with considerable alcohol-related risks.
Method
Seventy-two incoming undergraduate females, approximately half of whom reported a family history of alcohol misuse, completed initial questionnaires as well as Timeline Followback assessments. In addition, participants completed five successive weeks of online behavioral diaries measuring three categories of prospective alcohol consumption: total drinks, maximum drinks, and heavy episodic drinking events. Repeated measures ANCOVA models, controlling for prior alcohol consumption, examined participants’ drinking behavior.

Decent Colonialism? Pure Science And Colonial Ideology In The Netherlands East Indies, 1910–1929, Andrew Goss
History Faculty Publications
This article examines changes within the Dutch civilising mission ideology after the decline of the Ethical Policy. Support of pure science, scientific knowledge that supposedly transcended ideology and politics, allowed the colonial administration to continue to project their rule as decent and moral, even as conflict and repression dominated colonial politics in the 1920s. The argument starts with the construction of pure science after 1910, under the care of J.C. Koningsberger, out of the research traditions at the Department of Agriculture. It next examines the creation of institutions and agendas of pure science. And finally it analyses the absorption of …

Apoptosis of host cells plays an important role in modulating the pathogenesis of many infectious diseases. It has been reported that Leptospira interrogans, the causal agent of leptospirosis, induces apoptosis in macrophages and hepatocytes. However, the molecular mechanisms responsible for host cell death remained largely unknown. Here we demonstrate that L. interrogans induced apoptosis in a macrophage-like cell line, J774A.1, and primary murine macrophages in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Apoptosis was associated with the activation of cysteine aspartic acid-specific proteases (caspase-3, caspase-6, and caspase-8), the increased expression of Fas-associated death domain (FADD), and the cleavage of the caspase substrates …

Correlating Threshold Power With Free-Space Bandwidth For Low-Directivity Antennas, Abu T.M. Sayem, Mark G. Douglas, Gernot Schmidt, Ben Petric, Mohammod Ali

This paper develops a threshold power rationale that can be used to demonstrate inherent compliance for portable wireless devices with specific absorption rate (SAR) limits over the 300-6000-MHz frequency range. This is achieved first by understanding the relationship between basic antenna parameters (bandwidth, operating frequency, and distance to the body) and SAR. From this, an upper limit is determined for the power transmitted by a portable wireless device such that the SAR will not exceed the compliance limit. Based on the presented computational and measured data, an empirical formula is developed for the threshold power as a function of the …
Consensual Sadomasochism, Briana O'Dowd
Consensual Sadomasochism, Briana O'Dowd
Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal
Sadism, the desire to inflict pain, and masochism, the craving for pain, can be categorized as formal mental disorders, as per the DSMIV-TR, but only to the extent to which normal functioning is impaired by the acts and fantasies associated with them. Sadomasochism spans across nearly all demographics and time periods, having its origin around the emergence of philosophy, economics, and politics. Consensual sadomasochism carries with it a particular consideration as both participants desire to become the other’s erotic fantasy and indeed enjoy being in that role. Sadomasochism has been continuously looked down upon by society due to misunderstandings about …

Using Google Scholar To Search For Online Availability Of A Cited Article In Engineering Disciplines, Virginia A. Baldwin
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
Many published studies examine the effectiveness of Google Scholar (Scholar) as an index for scholarly articles. This paper analyzes the value of Scholar in finding and labeling online full text of articles using titles from the citations of engineering faculty publications. For the fields of engineering and the engineering colleges in the study, Scholar identified online access for 25% of the chemical engineering and 13% of the mechanical engineering citations. During the study the format that Scholar (which is in beta version) used to present the result set changed. This change now makes discovery of online access to full text …

High levels of ciliate infestation can affect respiration, feed intake, and locomotion in farmed shrimps in the tropics. Information on seasonal variation of the infestation parameters of ciliates is scarce, but it would be useful for determining the suitability of preventive measures or therapeutic treatment if necessary. This study aimed to describe the prevalence and mean intensity of infestation (MII) of ciliates on wild native shrimps Penaeus (Farfantepenaeus) brasiliensis and P. (Farfantepenaeus) duorarum and farm-cultured juvenile shrimp Penaeus (Litopenaeus) vannamei over an annual cycle and to determine whether an association existed among physicochemical factors …

Erectile Dysfunction And Its Relationship With Cardiovascular Risk Factors And Disease, Eshiobo Irekpita, Taofik A. Salami
Saudi Medical Journal
Penile erection is a complex hydraulic process, in which the cardiovascular system (CVS) plays a central role. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve, and/or maintain penile erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse, and was previously regarded as part of aging. It is associated with certain diseases and life style habits with a cause-effect relationship, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and cigarette smoking. Through atherosclerotic narrowing, these diseases may cause coronary artery disease (CAD) and ED, with ED featuring earlier due to the small size of the pudendal artery. The common denominator in ED and CAD is endothelial dysfunction. …
