Chemical Oxygen Demand (Cod) Reduction Of Jatropha Curcas L. Methyl Ester (Biodiesel) Processing Wastewater By Batch Electrochemical Treatment, Al Kaixer G. Ancheta

Undergraduate Theses

Electrochemical treatment was employed to treat the Jatropha methyl ester processing wastewater mainly to reduce its COD. Electro-oxidation experiments on the raw wastewater at 2A showed a COD removal efficiency of only 25% in 15 hours.Further experiments were then conducted on the wastewater supplemented with artificial seawater (ASW) at varying proportions of 0.10%, 30% and 50% which could help generate more chlorine-based oxidants for oxidizing the COD in the wastewater. Increasing the operating current while proportionally the time achieved the same COD removal efficiency (all around 25%) by statistical analysis, Increasing the seawater amount also had no significant effect to …

A Bio-Optical Model For Syringodium Filiforme Canopies, Margaret A. Stoughton

OES Theses and Dissertations

Seagrasses are significant ecological and biogeochemical agents in shallow water ecosystems throughout the world. In many regions, seagrass meadows occupy a sufficient fraction of the coastal zone, and generate optical signatures that can be observed from space. Bio-optical models of light absorption and scattering by submerged plant canopies for certain species such as Thalassia testudinum and Zostera marina have successfully modeled the plane irradiance distribution and photosynthesis within the submerged canopies. Syringodium filiforme differs &om T. testudinttm and Z marina, in leaf morphology and canopy architecture. The objective of this study was to develop a radiative transfer model that …

A landscape design should meet the needs of the people who will use and maintain the area while incorporating the site’s existing environmental conditions into the design. Water is a limiting resource in Utah, so designing the landscape to efficiently use water is important. Conserving water in the landscape can be accomplished by selecting low water use plants, designing and scheduling irrigation systems efficiently, grouping plants according to their water requirements, and using hardscaping materials (patios, stone paths, decks, etc.) appropriately to reduce the area requiring irrigation.

Spectroscopic Studies Of Fluoranthene And 3-Nitrofluoranthene, Matthew Parks Mar 2009

Spectroscopic Studies Of Fluoranthene And 3-Nitrofluoranthene, Matthew Parks

Undergraduate Research Conference

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are known byproducts of anthropogenic sources including incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. They are known to be teratogenic, mutagenic and carcinogenic. This study investigated the spectral properties of fluoranthene and 3- nitrofluoranthene using NMR, UV-Vis and infrared techniques. The acquisition of spectral data provides a means to identify these compounds in mixtures and can be used which to develop model formulae for quantitation. A 2-D NMR method (HMQC ) was used for assigning 13C peaks. The infrared spectrum for 3-nitrofluoranthene showed characteristic strong absorption peaks at 1323 and 1516 cm-1 assigned to symmetric/asymmetric nitro stretches, respectively. …

We present a numerical scheme used to investigate a mathematical model of tumor growth which incorporates multiple disparate timescales. We simulate the model with different initial data. The initial conditions explored herein correspond to a small remnant of tumor tissue left after surgical resection. Our results indicate that tumor regrowth begins at the pre-surgery tumor-healthy tissue interface and penetrates back into the original tumor area. This growth is rate-limited by the reformation of the tumor vascular network.

Nitrogen, Phosphorus, And Suspended Solids Concentrations In Tributaries To The Great Bay Estuary Watershed In 2008, Philip Trowbridge Mar 2009

Nitrogen, Phosphorus, And Suspended Solids Concentrations In Tributaries To The Great Bay Estuary Watershed In 2008, Philip Trowbridge

PREP Reports & Publications

Nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment loads to the Great Bay Estuary are a growing concern. In the 2006 State of the Estuaries report (NHEP, 2006), the New Hampshire Estuaries Project (now called the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership or PREP) calculated the nitrogen load from tributaries to the Great Bay Estuary using data collected by the NH Department of Environmental Services. PREP needs to update this indicator for the 2009 State of the Estuaries report. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to collect representative data on nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended sediment concentrations in tributaries to the Great Bay Estuary in 2008. …

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

Lidar (LIght Detection And Ranging) provides the means to quantitatively evaluate the spatial and temporal variability of particulate emissions from agricultural activities. AGLITE is a three-wavelength portable scanning lidar system built at the Space Dynamic Laboratory (SDL) to measure the spatial and temporal distribution of particulate concentrations around an agricultural facility. The retrieval algorithm takes advantage of measurements taken simultaneously at three laser wavelengths (355, 532, and 1064 nm) to extract particulate optical parameters, convert these parameters to volume concentration, and estimate the particulate mass concentration of a particulate plume. The quantitative evaluation of particulate optical and physical properties from …

Fish Effects On Ocean Current Observations In The Cariaco Basin, Jyotika I. Virmani, Robert H. Weisberg Mar 2009

Fish Effects On Ocean Current Observations In The Cariaco Basin, Jyotika I. Virmani, Robert H. Weisberg

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Multiple years of moored current meter observations from the Cariaco Basin show low‐frequency variations along with near‐inertial waves and further imply the persistent diurnal movement of fish species known to populate the basin. In agreement with short‐term observations from 1979, the more recent observations with acoustic Doppler current profilers provide evidence of the multidecadal presence and behavior of these species. An unwanted corollary, however, is a bias in both the vertical and horizontal components of velocity due to the fish movements. Removal of this fish bias results in large data loss (approximately 72%); however, an interpolated, non‐biased data set is …
