MIIR Faculty Research

Increased phosphorylation of the 70-kDa ribosomal S6 kinase (p70S6k) signaling is strongly correlated with the degree of muscle adaptation following exercise. Herein we compare the phosphorylation of p70S6k, Akt, and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in the tibialis anterior (TA) muscles of lean and obese Zucker rats following a bout of eccentric exercise. Exercise increased p70S6k (Thr389) phosphorylation immediately after (33.3 ± 7.2%) and during [1 h (24.0 ± 14.9%) and 3 h (24.6 ± 11.3%)] recovery in the lean TA and at 3 h (33.5 ± 8.0%) in the obese TA Zucker rats. mTOR (Ser2448) phosphorylation was elevated in …

Concept Maps In The Science Classroom, Paul T. Lubberts Apr 2009

Concept Maps In The Science Classroom, Paul T. Lubberts

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Science curriculums are often contain concepts and vocabulary that students are expected to memorize through reading and listening to lectures. Unfortunately rote learning is often short term without a complete understanding. Concept maps are designed to use a cognitive structure of hierarchical organization with more general concepts occupying higher levels and more specific concepts at lower levels. The map is a diagram that represents conceptual and verbal knowledge in graphical and visual forms. Prior studies have shown concept maps are a meaningful learning tool and an alternative to rote learning when students work cooperatively in small groups. The study investigated …

Pat Proteins, An Ancient Family Of Lipid Droplet Proteins That Regulate Cellular Lipid Stores. Biochim Biophys Acta, John Tansey Apr 2009

Pat Proteins, An Ancient Family Of Lipid Droplet Proteins That Regulate Cellular Lipid Stores. Biochim Biophys Acta, John Tansey

Chemistry Faculty Scholarship

The PAT family of lipid droplet proteins includes 5 members in mammals: perilipin, adipose differentiation-related protein (ADRP), tail-interacting protein of 47 kiloDaltons (TIP47), S3-12, and OXPAT. Members of this family are also present in evolutionarily distant organisms, including insects, slime molds and fungi. All PAT proteins share sequence similarity and the ability to bind intracellular lipid droplets, either constitutively or in response to metabolic stimuli, such as increased lipid flux into or out of lipid droplets. Positioned at the lipid droplet surface, PAT proteins manage access of other proteins (lipases) to the lipid esters within the lipid droplet core and …

The Impact Of High Risk Propensity On Lifestyle And Consumption Behaviors, Gergely Nemeth Apr 2009

The Impact Of High Risk Propensity On Lifestyle And Consumption Behaviors, Gergely Nemeth

Honors Projects in Marketing

This research investigates the effects of high-risk propensity (as measured by the sensation seeking scale) on lifestyle variables such as substance use and abuse, number of sexual partners and driving behavior, and explores the consumption patterns exhibited by different risk propensity groups. An online survey with 340 participants was conducted; 64 low, 204 medium and 62 high sensation seekers were identified. High sensation seekers exhibited riskier behaviors across all lifestyle and consumption behaviors and led us to conclude that it is, in fact, a constant personality variable. We have not found a significant difference between age and sports activities one …

Classroom Management Techniques For Adhd Students: A Teaching Guide For Secondary Teachers, Troy A. Stevens Apr 2009

Classroom Management Techniques For Adhd Students: A Teaching Guide For Secondary Teachers, Troy A. Stevens

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

"Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) occurs in 3% to 5% in school age children" (Sherman, Rasmussen, & Baydala, 2006, p. 1). This figure continues to grow due to diagnoses of ADHD, which were not identified earlier in young children. This increase in the number of students with ADHD effects educators and how they manage their classroom. The success of an educator is based on how well his or her students learn and how that educator manages the classroom environment. Typically, ADHD students disrupt the learning environment consistently, which effects the overall learning environment. Educators are provided with instructional and behavioral …

Group-Conflict Resolution: Sources Of Resistance To Reconciliation, Erin O'Hara O'Connor Apr 2009

Group-Conflict Resolution: Sources Of Resistance To Reconciliation, Erin O'Hara O'Connor

Scholarly Publications

In the past few years a number of scholars in a variety of intellectual disciplines have contributed to a better understanding of dyadic conflicts and their resolution. In particular, sociologists, psychologists, anthropologists, lawyers, and others have explored the dynamics of apology and its role in deescalating disputes and promoting forgiveness and reconciliation. Furthermore, we have a better understanding today of the benefits to individuals from forgiveness and reconciliation. Victims who are able to forgive their transgressors have better psychological and physical health and lead richer lives.2 Because lawyers tend to focus their attentions on legal disputes, a growing body of …

Activation Energy Of The Formation Of The Allylic Carbocation In The Acid Catalyzed Dehydration Of 4-Methylcyclohexanol, Dequina Nicholas Apr 2009

Activation Energy Of The Formation Of The Allylic Carbocation In The Acid Catalyzed Dehydration Of 4-Methylcyclohexanol, Dequina Nicholas

Capstone Research Projects

The existence of a persisting allylic compound at equilibrium of the dehydration of 4-methyl cyclohexanol in 80% w/w sulfuric acid is supported by absorbance vs. time plots from UV-vis analysis . The peak seen at 305 nm is an indication of the formation of an allylic carbocation over time and therefore can support a proposed mechanism for this reaction. Kinetic analysis of the compound at 35.0°C, 48.5°C, 60.0°C, and 66.8°C shows that the dehydration reaction is first order with rate constants of 1.83 x 10-5s-1 , 1.27 x 10-4s-1 , 9.28x10-4s-1, and 9.55x10-4s-1 respectively for each temperature and an activation …

Modeling Time-Series Absorbance Spectra, Amarillis Andrea Cornejo, Mitch Menzmer Apr 2009

Modeling Time-Series Absorbance Spectra, Amarillis Andrea Cornejo, Mitch Menzmer

Capstone Research Projects

The progress of many reactions can be followed by taking time-series ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorbance spectra. Important information about a mechanism can be obtained from such series. Given experimental time-series absorbance spectra and a proposed mechanism, a method for simulating timeseries absorbance spectra using the computer program Chemical Kinetics Simulator (CKS) and a spreadsheet is proposed. Time series absorbance spectra of the reaction of 1x10-4 M chenodeoxycholic acid in 74.7% (w/w) H2SO4/H20 at 60.0 °C was used as the test case. This method is expected to be useful in the evaluation of mechanisms derived from time-series absorbance spectra.

Ecological Traits Of A New Aphid Parasitoid, Endaphis Fugitiva (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), And Its Potential For Biological Control Of The Banana Aphid, Pentalonia Nigronervosa (Hemiptera: Aphididae), Frédéric B. Muratori, Raymond J. Gagne, Rusell H. Messing Apr 2009

Messing

USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory

Most parasitoids of aphids are small wasps belonging to the families Braconidae or Aphelinidae. However, some dipteran parasitoids are also known to use aphids as hosts. We describe and give life-history information on a new species of aphid parasitoid, Endaphis fugitiva Gagné and Muratori, found to parasitize the banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa Coquerel, the vector of banana bunchy top virus. Field and laboratory observations show that fly eggs are laid on the leaves near an aphid colony, the newly hatched fly larvae search for hosts while crawling on the leaf, and then penetrate the aphid between the legs and thorax. …

Gene Expression Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Exposed To Commercial Wood Preservatives By Dna Microarray Analysis And Rt-Pcr, Madison M. Stevens

Theses & Honors Papers

Creosote and pentachlorophenol (PtCP) are two commercial wood preservatives that are regulated by the EPA because of their toxicity to wildlife and humans. Cresote and PtCP have been suspected of causing cancer in humans, but that claim has not been proven. To observe changes in gene expression in organisms exposed to these compounds, a model system such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker's yeast) is used. S. cerevisiae cells were exposed to a creosote concentration of 50ng/ml and to a PtCP concentration of 50uM. Since creosote and PtCP were suspended in methylene chloride and ethanol, respectively, yeast cells were also exposed separately …
