Cop9-Associated Csn5 Regulates Exosomal Protein Deubiquitination And Sorting, Yuelong Liu, Spandan V. Shah, Xiaoyu Xiang, Jianhua Wang, Zhong-Bin Deng, Cunren Liu, Liming Zhang, Jianming Wu, Tara Edmonds, Christina Jambor, John C. Kappes, Huang-Ge Zhang

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Ubiquitinated endosomal proteins that are deposited into the lumens of multivesicular bodies are either sorted for lysosomal-mediated degradation or secreted as exosomes into the extracellular milieu. The mechanisms that underlie the sorting of cellular cargo proteins are currently unknown. In this study, we show that the COP9 signalosome (CSN)-associated protein CSN5 quantitatively regulated proteins that were sorted into exosomes. Western blot analysis of exosomal proteins indicated that small interfering (si)RNA knockdown of CSN5 results in increased levels of both ubiquitinated and non-ubiquitinated exosomal proteins, including heat shock protein 70, in comparison with exosomes isolated from the supernatants of 293 cells …

This special publication Perspectives in Carbonate Geology is a collection of papers most of which were presented at a symposium to honor the 80th birthday of Bob Ginsburg at the meeting of Geological Society of America in Salt Lake City in 2005. The majority of the papers in this publication are connected with the study of modern carbonate sediments. Bob Ginsburg pioneered the concept of comparative sedimentology - that is using the modern to compare to and relate to and understand the ancient. These studies are concerned with Bob's areas of passion: coral reefs and sea-level; submarine cementation and formation …

Natal And Breeding Dispersal Of Bobolinks (Dolichonyx Oryzivorus) And Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus Sandwichensis) In An Agricultural Landscape, Natalia Fajardo, Allan M. Strong, Noah G. Perlut, Neil J. Buckley Apr 2009

Natal And Breeding Dispersal Of Bobolinks (Dolichonyx Oryzivorus) And Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus Sandwichensis) In An Agricultural Landscape, Natalia Fajardo, Allan M. Strong, Noah G. Perlut, Neil J. Buckley

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Dispersal is a key process in the metapopulation dynamics and genetic structure of spatially segregated populations. However, our knowledge of avian dispersal, particularly in migratory passerines, remains limited. We studied dispersal of Bobolinks (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) and Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis) to determine whether agricultural management practices affected dispersal patterns and habitat selection. From 2002 to 2006, we banded adults and nestlings on six focal hay fields and two pastures in the Champlain Valley of Vermont and New York and searched for banded birds within 1.5 km of Vermont field sites during two years. Natal dispersal distances were …

Influence Of Flanking Sequence Context On The Conformational Flexibility Of Aminofluorene-Modified Dg Adduct In Da Mismatch Dna Duplexes, Nidhi Jain, Srinivasarao Meneni, Vipin Jain, Bongsup P. Cho Apr 2009

Influence Of Flanking Sequence Context On The Conformational Flexibility Of Aminofluorene-Modified Dg Adduct In Da Mismatch Dna Duplexes, Nidhi Jain, Srinivasarao Meneni, Vipin Jain, Bongsup P. Cho

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

When positioned opposite to a dA in a DNA duplex, the prototype arylamine-DNA adduct [N-(2'-deooxyguanosin-yl)-7-flouro-2-aminoflourene(FAF)] adopts the so-called 'wedge' (W) conformation, in which the carcinogen resides in the minor groove of the duplex. All 16 FAF-modified 12-mer NG*NAN dA mismatch duplexes (G*=FAF, N=G, A, C, T) exhibited strongly positive induced circular dichroism in the 290-360nm range (ICD290-360nm), which supports the W conformation. The ICD290-360nm intensities were the greatest for duplexes with a 3'-flanking T. The AG*N duplex series showed little adduct-induced destabilization. An exception was the AG*T duplex, which …

Sorghum--Fuel Of The Future? Agronomist Studies Sorghum And Grass For Future Energy Source, Nancy Peterson, John Propheter, Scott Staggenborg

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins

Weighing in on crop production in West Africa might seem a bit of a stretch for a K-State agronomist; however, that’s not the case for Scott Staggenborg. He recently returned from his second visit to West Africa, where he reviewed sorghum research and crop production.

During the research trip to Tombouctou (also spelled Timbuktu), a West African city near the Niger River, he joined Malian researchers in exploring opportunities to improve sorghum production and management. The research effort is supported by the International Sorghum and Millet Improvement Program (INTSORMIL).

Growing conditions in the West African region are remarkably similar to …

Applied Electrokinetics For Tissue Engineering Applications, Stephanie R. Tully-Dartez Apr 2009

Applied Electrokinetics For Tissue Engineering Applications, Stephanie R. Tully-Dartez

Doctoral Dissertations

Tissue engineering could provide an alternative source of transplant tissue regardless of donor supply and with reduced risk of immune rejection. Engineered tissue requires three critical components for successful development: the cells, growth factors, and the scaffold on which they will initially grow. The scaffold acts as a temporary extracellular matrix (ECM) allowing cell attachment and acclimation to the environment prior to synthesis and construction of the cell's native ECM. Prior to cell seeding, the scaffold must be characterized to determine whether or not the pore geometry is conducive to cell implantation. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) provides a unique and …

How "Weak" Mindreaders Inherited The Earth, Cameron Buckner, Adam Shriver, Stephen Crowley, Colin Allen Apr 2009

How "Weak" Mindreaders Inherited The Earth, Cameron Buckner, Adam Shriver, Stephen Crowley, Colin Allen

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Carruthers argues that an integrated faculty of metarepresentation evolved for mindreading and was later exapted for metacognition. A more consistent application of his approach would regard metarepresentation in mindreading with the same skeptical rigor, concluding that the "faculty" may have been entirely exapted. Given this result, the usefulness of Carruthers’ line-drawing exercise is called into question.

Fisheries Research Report No. 189 - Results Of A 2007 Survey Of The Swan River Region For Four Introduced Marine Species, Justin I. Mcdonald, Fred E. Wells

Fisheries Research Reports

A survey of the Swan River region for four non-indigenous marine species was conducted in 2007: the European shore crab Carcinus maenas, the Asian bag mussel Musculista senhousia, the European fan worm Sabella spallanzanii, and the scallop Scaeochlamys livida. The first three of these species are global in their distribution and on the ‘top-ten world’s worst invaders listing; the last species is introduced from the eastern states of Australia.

In this survey divers on SCUBA examined 43 sites for each of the listed species. Despite previous records of Carcinus maenas and Musculista senhousia in this region …

The Healing Power Of Nature, Denise Mitten Apr 2009

The Healing Power Of Nature, Denise Mitten

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Outdoor education practitioners share the wonders of the outdoors and help participants receive the health benefits of being in nature. However, in our technology and activity centered culture the intrinsic value of being in nature has been overlooked and undervalued. As people spend less and less time outside and more people become obese and develop diabetes, spending time in nature and having healthy natural areas available to them is more important than ever. Many disciplines have growing bodies of research demonstrating the developmental and health benefits of spending time in nature and having natural areas close to living areas. In …

Phase-Transfer Catalyzed Synthesis Of The Soy Isoflavanoid S-Equol, A. W. Butler, A. L. Calvert, Michael A. Christiansen, M. B. Andrus

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Presentations

S-Equol is an isoflavanoid metabolized from the isoflavone daidzein by intestinal bacteria. Only 30-50 percent of all individuals possess bacteria that produce S-Equol. Recent data supports the compound’s pharmaceutical potential for treating prostate cancer and post-menopausal estrogen deficiency (ref. 1). Because the compound is only minutely available from natural sources, an affordable asymmetric total synthesis would be necessary to generate sufficient quantities for expanded research. Only one asymmetric total synthesis of S-Equol has been reported to date, using a chiral auxiliary to give product in a 10 percent yield over 6 steps (ref. 2). It is our goal to develop …

Una Manera De Vida Diferente: Embarazos En Adolescentes Y Planificación Familiar En La Zona De Intag, Ecuador, Jennifer Dabrow

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Lack of family planning and high rates of adolescent pregnancy plague the poorest regions of the world. Not only does this deficiency result in the deaths of infants and mothers as well as significantly depressing quality of life, but, as the human population expands, we risk destroying much of the environment and natural resources upon which we depend. In Intag, a rural network of communities in the cloud forest of Ecuador, adolescent pregnancy is the norm and women commonly have upwards of 7 children. Working in the Subcentro health clinic of Apuela, I interviewed 50 mothers regarding their age during …

Modeling Brain Injury: Expression Of Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein In Stretch-Injured Astrocytes, Lindsey Cooke Apr 2009

Modeling Brain Injury: Expression Of Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein In Stretch-Injured Astrocytes, Lindsey Cooke

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death and disability in individuals under 45. Individuals who survive TBI may be disabled for the rest of their lives and suffer from cognitive, physical, social and financial problems. Following TBI it has been shown that astrocytic gene expression of many proteins, including glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), increases. These “reactive” astrocytes are thought to have both beneficial and detrimental effects on neuronal survival and function. The current study uses an in vitro model of injury which grows astrocytes on deformable silastic membranes to allow for dynamic stretch of cultured cells …
