Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers
Aldosterone produces a multitude of effects in vivo, including promotion of postmyocardial infarction adverse cardiac remodeling and heart failure progression. It is produced and secreted by the adrenocortical zona glomerulosa (AZG) cells after angiotensin II (AngII) activation of AngII type 1 receptors (AT(1)Rs). Until now, the general consensus for AngII signaling to aldosterone production has been that it proceeds via activation of G(q/11)-proteins, to which the AT(1)R normally couples. Here, we describe a novel signaling pathway underlying this AT(1)R-dependent aldosterone production mediated by beta-arrestin-1 (betaarr1), a universal heptahelical receptor adapter/scaffolding protein. This pathway results in sustained ERK activation and subsequent …

Knockdown Of Limiting-Co2–Induced Gene Hla3 Decreases Hco3− Transport And Photosynthetic Ci Affinity In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Deqiang Duanmu, Amy R. Miller, Kempton M. Horken, Donald P. Weeks, Martin H. Spalding
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The CO2-concentrating mechanism (CCM) of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and other microalgal species is essential for photosynthetic growth in most natural settings. A great deal has been learned regarding the CCM in cyanobacteria, including identification of inorganic carbon (Ci; CO2 and HCO3−) transporters; however, specific knowledge of analogous transporters has remained elusive in eukaryotic microalgae such as C. reinhardtii. Here we investigated whether the limiting-CO2–inducible, putative ABC-type transporter HLA3 might function as a HCO3− transporter by evaluating the effect of pH on growth, photosynthetic Ci affinity, and [14C]-Ci uptake in …

Digging It: A Participatory Ethnography Of The Experiences At A School Garden, Branimir Cvetkovic
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This case study of a school garden focuses on concepts of community that are fostered and embodied at this setting. By utilizing participatory ethnographic methodologies, this research explored gemeinschaft and gesellschaft concepts of community. Data reveals that students are able to learn mastery, belonging, generosity and independence while participating in the garden work. Teachers manage students who attempt to challenge the boundaries of this community by utilizing and ethic of care which allows teachers to de-emphasize authority and to first consider the networks of relationships and how to mend and improve them. Students are able to experience governmentality and an …

Longitudinal Image Analysis Of Tumor/Brain Change In Contrast Uptake Induced By Radiation, Xiaoxi Zhang, Tim Johnson, Rod Little, Yue Cao
Longitudinal Image Analysis Of Tumor/Brain Change In Contrast Uptake Induced By Radiation, Xiaoxi Zhang, Tim Johnson, Rod Little, Yue Cao
The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
This work is motivated by a quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging study of the differential tumor/healthy tissue change in contrast uptake induced by radiation. The goal is to determine the time in which there is maximal contrast uptake, a surrogate for permeability, in the tumor relative to healthy tissue. A notable feature of the data is its spatial heterogeneity. Zhang, Johnson, Little, and Cao (2008a and 2008b) discuss two parallel approaches to “denoise” a single image of change in contrast uptake from baseline to a single follow-up visit of interest. In this work we explore the longitudinal profile of the tumor/healthy …

What sort of culture would evolve in an island colony of naive founders? This question cannot be studied experimentally in humans. We performed the analogous experiment using socially learned birdsong. Culture is typically viewed as consisting of traits inherited epigenetically, via social learning. However, cultural diversity has species-typical constraints1, presumably of genetic origin. A celebrated, if contentious, example is whether a universal grammar constrains syntactic diversity in human languages2. Oscine songbirds exhibit song learning and provide biologically tractable models of culture: members of a species show individual variation in song3 and geographically separated groups have local song dialects 4,5. Different …

The Proteolytic Stability And Cytotoxicity Studies Of L‐Aspartic Acid And L‐Diaminopropionic Acid Derived Β‐Peptides And A Mixed Α/Β‐Peptide, Sahar Ahmed, Kamaljit Kaur
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
The use of peptides as drugs in pharmaceutical applications is hindered by their susceptibility to proteolysis and therefore low bioavailability. β‐Peptides that contain an additional methylene group in the backbone, are gaining recognition from a pharmaceutical stand point as they are considerably more resilient to proteolysis and metabolism. Recently, we reported two new classes of β‐peptides, β3‐ and β2‐peptides derived from l‐aspartic acid and l‐diaminopropionic acid, respectively. Here, we report the proteolytic stability of these β‐peptidic compounds and a mixed α /β‐peptide against three enzymes (pronase, trypsin and elastase), as well as, human serum. The …

Social Implications Of Fair Trade Coffee In Chiapas, Mexico: Toward Alternative Economic Integration, Joseph J. Torok
Social Implications Of Fair Trade Coffee In Chiapas, Mexico: Toward Alternative Economic Integration, Joseph J. Torok
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The coffee trade in Chiapas, Mexico is a unique approach of sustainable development and economic integration, demonstrating that local social movements can change behaviors in international trade regimes. The Zapatista community of Chiapas, Mexico, has an impact on the global trade system, where resultant changes begin at the local level. In the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, factors contributing to the Zapatista rebellion have led actors within civil society to form new socio-political organizations capable of changing participation, norms, and economic outcomes during the post-rebellion period (1994 - present). This study explores the dilemmas facing the autonomy of actors in …
Closure Between Apparent And Inherent Optical Properties Of The Ocean With Applications To The Determination Of Spectral Bottom Reflectance, James Edward Ivey
Closure Between Apparent And Inherent Optical Properties Of The Ocean With Applications To The Determination Of Spectral Bottom Reflectance, James Edward Ivey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study focuses on comparing six different marine optical models, field measurements, and laboratory measurements. Inherent Optical Properties (IOPs) of the water column depend only on the constituents within the water, not on the ambient light field. Apparent Optical Properties (AOPs) depend both on IOPs and the geometric underwater light field resulting from solar irradiance. Absorption (a) and scattering (b) are IOPs. Scattering can be partitioned into backscattering (b[subscript b]). Remote Sensing Reflectance (R[subscript rs]), the ratio of radiant light leaving the water to the light entering the water surface plane (E[subscript d]), is an AOP. R[subscript rs] is proportional …

Statistical And Data Mining Methodologies For Behavioral Analysis In Transgenic Mouse Models Of Alzheimer’S Disease: Parallels With Human Ad Evaluation, Ralph E. Leighty
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder and the leading cause of human senile dementia. Alzheimer’s represents a significant public health concern, having widespread social and economic implications. Consequently, protocols for early detection and therapeutic intervention (both behavioral and pharmacologic) constitute important targets for medical investigation. Furthermore, contemporary research depends upon comprehensive neurobehavioral assessment and advanced statistical and computational analytic methodologies for characterizing AD-associated sensorimotor and cognitive impairment, as well as evaluating therapeutic efficacy. This dissertation introduces data mining-based techniques (decision trees, neural networks, support vector machines) for behavioral analysis in both nontransgenic and Alzheimer’s transgenic mice, to evaluate …
