Neutron Production From Beam-Modifying Devices In A Modern Double Scattering Proton Therapy Beam Delivery System, Angélica Pérez-Andjar, Wayne D. Newhauser, Paul M. Deluca Apr 2009

Neutron Production From Beam-Modifying Devices In A Modern Double Scattering Proton Therapy Beam Delivery System, Angélica Pérez-Andjar, Wayne D. Newhauser, Paul M. Deluca

Faculty Publications

In this work the neutron production in a passive beam delivery system was investigated. Secondary particles including neutrons are created as the proton beam interacts with beam shaping devices in the treatment head. Stray neutron exposure to the whole body may increase the risk that the patient develops a radiogenic cancer years or decades after radiotherapy. We simulated a passive proton beam delivery system with double scattering technology to determine the neutron production and energy distribution at 200 MeV proton energy. Specifically, we studied the neutron absorbed dose per therapeutic absorbed dose, the neutron absorbed dose per source particle and …

We’Re Here, We’Re Hopeful, And We Can Do Well: Conceptions And Attributes Of Positive Youth Development Among Immigrant Youth, Yulika Forman, Dan Du, Megan Kiely, Jennifer Carrano Apr 2009

We’Re Here, We’Re Hopeful, And We Can Do Well: Conceptions And Attributes Of Positive Youth Development Among Immigrant Youth, Yulika Forman, Dan Du, Megan Kiely, Jennifer Carrano

Journal of Youth Development

Using qualitative and quantitative information from Grades 8 and 9 of the 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development (PYD), we describe the conceptions of thriving youth present within adolescent immigrants to the United States, and interrelate these conceptions with quantitative scores for PYD, contribution, and positive future orientation. Conceptions of thriving that included positive future orientation were associated with higher quantitative scores for PYD and Contribution. Conceiving of thriving as making contributions to themselves or their communities was associated with higher quantitative scores for Contribution. These findings suggest that immigrant youth whose qualitative definitions of thriving include the U.S.-based conceptions …

Examining The Title X Family Planning Program’S (Public Law 91-572) Legislative History Through A Feminist Lens: A Thematic Analysis And Oral Histories With Key Stakeholders In Florida, Cheryl A. Vamos

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Title X Family Planning Program (Public Law 91-572), enacted by President Richard Nixon in 1970, provides federal funds for voluntary, confidential family planning services to all women, regardless of their age or economic status. This federal legislation aspired to prevent unintended pregnancies and poor birth outcomes to those in most need. However, over the past three decades, Title X has faced political, financial and social challenges. Despite its enormous success in improving the health and well-being of women and children by decreasing unintended pregnancies, the need for abortions and providing key comprehensive preventive services, without a newfound political will …

Francophone African Immigration To The United States: Causes And Implications For American Social Work Practice, Whitney R. Henderson Apr 2009

Francophone African Immigration To The United States: Causes And Implications For American Social Work Practice, Whitney R. Henderson

Social Work Theses

Francophone, or French-speaking, West Africans immigrants within the United States are of particular interest due to their choice of relocation. It is noteworthy because they are choosing not to immigrate to France, where there is excellent healthcare offered and the language commonality between France and the immigrant. This research studies why members of this population were choosing the United States over France. This exploratory research of Francophone West African immigration to the United States was conducted via face-to-face interviews with three members of this particular population in Providence, Rhode Island. Results from the interviews indicated that there are various reasons …

A Dedicated Thioesterase Of The Hotdog-Fold Family Is Required For The Biosynthesis Of The Naphthoquinone Ring Of Vitamin K1, Joshua R. Widhalm, Chloë Van Oostende, Fabienne Furt, Gilles J. C. Basset Apr 2009

A Dedicated Thioesterase Of The Hotdog-Fold Family Is Required For The Biosynthesis Of The Naphthoquinone Ring Of Vitamin K1, Joshua R. Widhalm, Chloë Van Oostende, Fabienne Furt, Gilles J. C. Basset

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Phylloquinone (vitamin K1) is a bipartite molecule that consists of a naphthoquinone ring attached to a phytyl side chain. The coupling of these 2 moieties depends on the hydrolysis of the CoA thioester of 1,4-dihydroxy-2-naphthoate (DHNA), which forms the naphthalenoid backbone. It is not known whether such a hydrolysis is enzymatic or chemical. In this study, comparative genomic analyses identified orthologous genes of unknown function that in most species of cyanobacteria cluster with predicted phylloquinone biosynthetic genes. The encoded approximately 16-kDa proteins display homology with some Hotdog domain-containing CoA thioesterases that are involved in the catabolism of 4-hydroxybenzoyl-CoA …

Cultural Culinary Wisdom: Combating The Nutrition Transition, Alanna O'Neil Apr 2009

Cultural Culinary Wisdom: Combating The Nutrition Transition, Alanna O'Neil

Global Studies Student Scholarship

The nutrition transition is a rapidly developing global problem. The disparity between the rates of global obesity and malnutrition is diminishing. Westernization and industrialization are serious factors contributing to the global food and dietary epidemic. As a result, food cultures are threatened by dietary changes inflicted by Westernization. Moreover, rates of diet related non-communicable diseases are on the rise as never seen before. This study examines the problem of the nutrition transition through the context of the prevalence of food cultures, case studies, culinary recipes, dietary habits, and cultural transitions. Supporting this research is a dietary survey of study abroad …

Estimating The Effects Of Detection Heterogeneity And Overdispersion On Trends Estimated From Avian Point Counts, Matthew A. Etterson, Gerald J. Niemi, Nicholas P. Danz Apr 2009

Estimating The Effects Of Detection Heterogeneity And Overdispersion On Trends Estimated From Avian Point Counts, Matthew A. Etterson, Gerald J. Niemi, Nicholas P. Danz

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Point counts are a common method for sampling avian distribution and abundance. Although methods for estimating detection probabilities are available, many analyses use raw counts and do not correct for detectability. We use a removal model of detection within an N-mixture approach to estimate abundance trends corrected for imperfect detection. We compare the corrected trend estimates to those estimated from raw counts for 16 species using 15 years of monitoring data on three national forests in the western Great Lakes, USA. We also tested the effects of overdispersion by modeling both counts and removal mixtures under three statistical distributions: …

An Evaluation Of An Upper-Division, General Education Information Literacy Program, Elizabeth Spackman Hopkins, Suzanne Julian

Communications in Information Literacy

The Advanced Writing library instruction program at Brigham Young University's Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL) is intended to teach junior-level students advanced information literacy and research skills. Student participation in the program is required in each of six junior-level English courses. Anecdotal feedback from librarians and students identified problems with the program; therefore, a qualitative evaluation of the program was conducted with the objective of identifying problems and possible solutions. The evaluation included a student survey and focus groups with students, librarians, and English faculty. In this paper, we describe the HBLL Advanced Writing (AW) instruction program, identify the problems …

Calculation Of Water Equivalent Thickness Of Materials Of Arbitrary Density, Elemental Composition And Thickness In Proton Beam Irradiation, Rui Zhang, Wayne D. Newhauser Apr 2009

Calculation Of Water Equivalent Thickness Of Materials Of Arbitrary Density, Elemental Composition And Thickness In Proton Beam Irradiation, Rui Zhang, Wayne D. Newhauser

Faculty Publications

In proton therapy, the radiological thickness of a material is commonly expressed in terms of water equivalent thickness (WET) or water equivalent ratio (WER). However, the WET calculations required either iterative numerical methods or approximate methods of unknown accuracy. The objective of this study was to develop a simple deterministic formula to calculate WET values with an accuracy of 1 mm for materials commonly used in proton radiation therapy. Several alternative formulas were derived in which the energy loss was calculated based on the Bragg-Kleeman rule (BK), the Bethe-Bloch equation (BB) or an empirical version of the Bethe-Bloch equation (EBB). …

Characterization Of Conserved Properties Of Hemagglutinin Of H5n1 And Human Influenza Viruses: Possible Consequences For Therapy And Infection Control, Veljko Veljkovic, Nevena Veljkovic, Claude P. Muller, Sybille Müller, Sanja Glisic, Vladimir Perovic, Heinz Köhler

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Epidemics caused by highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) are a continuing threat to human health and to the world's economy. The development of approaches, which help to understand the significance of structural changes resulting from the alarming mutational propensity for human-to-human transmission of HPAIV, is of particularly interest. Here we compare informational and structural properties of the hemagglutinin (HA) of H5N1 virus and human influenza virus subtypes, which are important for the receptor/virus interaction.

RESULTS: Presented results revealed that HA proteins encode highly conserved information that differ between influenza virus subtypes H5N1, H1N1, H3N2, H7N7 and defined an …
