The Role Of Connexin-36 Gap Junctions In Alcohol Intoxication And Reward, Kathryn Diane Bradley Apr 2009

The Role Of Connexin-36 Gap Junctions In Alcohol Intoxication And Reward, Kathryn Diane Bradley

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis project was to examine the function of connexin-36 (Cx36) gap junctions (GJs) in producing alcohol's intoxicating and rewarding effects. GABA neurons are thought to inhibit dopamine (DA) neurotransmission in the mesocorticolimbic system, which originates in the midbrain ventral tegmental area (VTA) and projects to limbic structures such as the nucleus accumbens (NAcc). The mesolimbic DA system is believed to be the neural substrate of alcohol intoxication and addiction (Tepper, Paladini, & Celada, 1998). Alcohol suppresses the firing rate of GABA neurons in the VTA (Gallegos, Criado, Lee, Henriksen, & Steffensen, 1999) and presumably disinhibits DA …

Coordinating Care For People With Multiple Chronic Conditions: The Guided Care Model And Other Innovative Approaches, Judith D. Moore, Carol O'Shaughnessy Apr 2009

Coordinating Care For People With Multiple Chronic Conditions: The Guided Care Model And Other Innovative Approaches, Judith D. Moore, Carol O'Shaughnessy

National Health Policy Forum

The Forum sponsored two site visits to explore the Johns Hopkins University's research and demonstration program on Guided Care, in April and August 2009. Guided Care is a patient-centered medical home model that uses an interdisciplinary approach to coordinating health care for older people with multiple chronic conditions. Guided Care nurses located in primary care practices work with Medicare patients on a long-term basis, coordinate their care among various providers, provide transitional care, and assist patients with self-management skills. Site visit participants learned about the complexities of caring for frail Medicare patients, some of whom see multiple physicians and other …

Factors Related To Formal And Informal Help-Seeking For Perinatal Depressive Symptoms, Erin Henshaw Apr 2009

Factors Related To Formal And Informal Help-Seeking For Perinatal Depressive Symptoms, Erin Henshaw

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Effective treatment for maternal depression improves overall maternal functioning and prevents the negative infant outcomes associated with maternal depression (Verduyn et al., 2003). Despite the clear benefits associated with treatment for perinatal depression, less than one third of depressed women seek any form of treatment (Flynn et al, 2006). The Health Belief Model (HBM) has received some support for other health-promoting behaviors, but its relevance for explaining mental health help-seeking has not been adequately tested. This study adds to the literature by simultaneously providing a more comprehensive and adequate test of the HBM in predicting mental health treatment for depression …

Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals Amplify Ultrafine Particle Mediated Cellular Oxidative Stress And Cytotoxicity, Shrilatha Balakrishna, Slawo Lomnicki, Kevin M. Mcavey, Richard B. Cole, Barry Dellinger, Stephania A. Cormier Apr 2009

Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals Amplify Ultrafine Particle Mediated Cellular Oxidative Stress And Cytotoxicity, Shrilatha Balakrishna, Slawo Lomnicki, Kevin M. Mcavey, Richard B. Cole, Barry Dellinger, Stephania A. Cormier

Faculty Publications

Background: Combustion generated particulate matter is deposited in the respiratory tract and pose a hazard to the lungs through their potential to cause oxidative stress and inflammation. We have previously shown that combustion of fuels and chlorinated hydrocarbons produce semiquinone-type radicals that are stabilized on particle surfaces (i.e. environmentally persistent free radicals; EPFRs). Because the composition and properties of actual combustion-generated particles are complex, heterogeneous in origin, and vary from day-to-day, we have chosen to use surrogate particle systems. In particular, we have chosen to use the radical of 2-monochlorophenol (MCP230) as the EPFR because we have previously shown that …

No Teacher Left Behind: The Influence Of Teachers With Disabilities In K-8 Classrooms A Meta-Synthesis, Amanda Hauk Apr 2009

No Teacher Left Behind: The Influence Of Teachers With Disabilities In K-8 Classrooms A Meta-Synthesis, Amanda Hauk

Special Education Masters Program Theses

This meta-synthesis of the literature on K-8 teachers with disabilities examines the profound influence that teachers with disabilities can have in our classrooms. Teachers with disabilities act as valuable and realistic role models for all students and bring unique qualities to the classroom, including a passion for inclusive education and creative methods of instruction. However, prejudicial barriers to success often restrict these exceptional teachers from access to our classrooms, undermining the inclusion movement present in most special education programs and schools today. When these teachers are denied employment, students with disabilities suffer in and out of the classroom from a …

Pharmacology Of A Novel Class Of Allosteric Modulators For The Alpha4 Beta2 Sub-Type Of Neuronal Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors, Anshul Pandya Apr 2009

Pharmacology Of A Novel Class Of Allosteric Modulators For The Alpha4 Beta2 Sub-Type Of Neuronal Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors, Anshul Pandya

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are members of a large family of ligand gated ion channels that mediate inhibitory and excitatory neural transmission in the central nervous system (CNS). The nicotinic subfamily has been implicated in a range of neurological disorders including autism, Alzheimer's disease and nicotine addiction; diseases that are currently both challenging and costly to treat. Despite the apparent importance of nAChRs in these disorders, only a limited number of drugs are currently available for altering nicotinic signalling in the CNS. No drug therapies are currently available that specifically target autism and only a limited number of drugs …

Ceramide Metabolism Regulates A Neuronal Nadph Oxidase Influencing Neuron Survival During Inflammation, Brian M. Barth Apr 2009

Ceramide Metabolism Regulates A Neuronal Nadph Oxidase Influencing Neuron Survival During Inflammation, Brian M. Barth

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Inflammation is a major component of acute and chronic pathologies of the central nervous system, including psychiatric disorders. Microglia respond to pathogens, injury, and toxins by secreting inflammatory mediators including pro-inflammatory cytokines in an event known as neuroinflammation. This thesis research investigated a link between neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, and ultimately neurodegeneration. The cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha was shown to stimulate a neuronal NADPH oxidase (NOX), specifically by stimulating the production of ceramide and ceramide-1-phosphate via Mg 2+-neutral sphingomyelinase (Mg2+-nSMase) and ceramide kinase. Intriguingly, glucosylceramide blocked NOX activation, linking ceramide neutralization directly to a decline in oxidative stress. Most …

Bioanalytical Development Of Charged Cyclodextrin Capillary Electrokinetic Chromatography And Microperfusion Sampling To Study Endogenous D-Serine And L-Glutamate Efflux In Brain, Daniel L. Kirschner Apr 2009

Bioanalytical Development Of Charged Cyclodextrin Capillary Electrokinetic Chromatography And Microperfusion Sampling To Study Endogenous D-Serine And L-Glutamate Efflux In Brain, Daniel L. Kirschner

Chemistry and Biochemistry

A multitude of studies have revealed specific biological mechanisms that contribute to D-amino acid action and regulation in the mammalian central nervous system. The remarkable increase in our understanding of D-amino acid function and distribution in mammals is in many ways a result of the development of sensitive enantioselective separation strategies that allow for quantification in real biological samples. In capillary electrokinetic chromatography (cEKC) the most powerful chiral resolving agents are anionic cyclodextrins (CDs), yet these have not previously been investigated for chiral bioanalysis of amino acids. The focus of this dissertation research was to investigate for the first time …

The Seasonality Of Reproduction, Body Composition, And Energy Expenditure In Northern Red-Backed Voles (Myodes Rutilus), Kalb Thayer Stevenson Apr 2009

The Seasonality Of Reproduction, Body Composition, And Energy Expenditure In Northern Red-Backed Voles (Myodes Rutilus), Kalb Thayer Stevenson

Biological Sciences

Arvicoline rodents (voles and lemmings) inhabit high-latitude environments and undergo pronounced seasonal changes in their physiology and behavior. They are an important prey resource in circumpolar regions, and their population numbers can affect the survival and reproductive fitness of many predator and secondary prey species. I studied the effects of seasonality and environmental factors on reproduction and energy allocation in the northern red-backed vole (Myodes rutilus), an arvicoline rodent in Alaska known to have bred in winter. My overall aim was to measure the effects of season and environmental factors on the reproductive axis, body composition, and energy expenditure of …
