Real-Time Optical Flow Sensor Design And Its Application On Obstacle Detection, Zhaoyi Wei Apr 2009

Real-Time Optical Flow Sensor Design And Its Application On Obstacle Detection, Zhaoyi Wei

Theses and Dissertations

Motion is one of the most important features describing an image sequence. Motion estimation has been widely applied in structure from motion, vision-based navigation and many other fields. However, real-time motion estimation remains a challenge because of its high computational expense. The traditional CPU-based scheme cannot satisfy the power, size and computation requirements in many applications. With the availability of new parallel architectures such as FPGAs and GPUs, applying these new technologies to computer vision tasks such as motion estimation has been an active research field in recent years. In this dissertation, FPGAs have been applied to real-time motion estimation …

Understanding Evolutionary Relationships In The Angiosperm Order Apiales Based On Analyses Of Organellar Dna Sequences And Nuclear Gene Duplications, Antoine Nicolas Apr 2009

Understanding Evolutionary Relationships In The Angiosperm Order Apiales Based On Analyses Of Organellar Dna Sequences And Nuclear Gene Duplications, Antoine Nicolas

Theses and Dissertations

I studied evolutionary history in the angiosperm order Apiales, with a special emphasis on interactions between form, time, and space. Four broad categories of problems were addressed: interfamilial relationships in Apiales, the assignment of genera traditionally assigned to the Apiaceae subfamily Hydrocotyloideae, the estimation of divergence times of the major clades, and the reconstruction of the biogeographic history of Apiales. We used molecular markers with different evolutionary properties and rates derived from the plastid (trnD-trnT and rpl16), nuclear (RPB2), and mitochondrial (nad1 intron 2) genomes, from more than 250 species representing all major clades in the order. The nuclear RPB2 …

The Role Of Brca1 In Dna Double-Strand Break Repair, Seth Dever Apr 2009

The Role Of Brca1 In Dna Double-Strand Break Repair, Seth Dever

Theses and Dissertations

Mutations in the breast cancer susceptibility 1 (BRCA1) gene are linked to breast as well as ovarian cancers. However, most cancer-causing mutations within the BRCA1 gene have been found in the N’ and C’ terminal regions of the BRCA1 protein, both believed to be important for DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair. The BRCA1 C’ terminal (BRCT) repeats have been implicated in phospho-serine protein binding whereas the N’ terminal RING domain interacts with the BARD1 protein to form a hetero-dimeric complex with E3 ubiquitin ligase activity. The BRCA1 BRCT domain binds CtIP, BACH1, and RAP80, all of which have been directly …

Modifying National Public Health Performance Standards For Local Public Health Department Accreditation, Jeffrey G. Kuhr Apr 2009

Modifying National Public Health Performance Standards For Local Public Health Department Accreditation, Jeffrey G. Kuhr

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Public health officials throughout the United States are currently preparing for a national accreditation initiative for local and state public health agencies. As a voluntary program, the accreditation process will measure the degree to which state, local, tribal, and territorial public health departments meet nationally recognized standards and measures. Proponents of the initiative feel that evaluating public health agencies on their capacities to achieve certain standards will lead to improved service quality, consistency of public health roles nationally, and a greater understanding of those roles among the general population. However, in planning for agency accreditation some potential barriers must be …

Whom Can You Trust? Exploring Leadership Addressing Hiv Risk Prevention In African American Women Apr 2009

Whom Can You Trust? Exploring Leadership Addressing Hiv Risk Prevention In African American Women

Florida Public Health Review

Within the last decade African American women have experienced serious increases in HIV diagnoses. Almost 40% of all newly diagnosed HIV-positive women in the United States are black women. Furthermore, black women are 23 times more likely to be diagnosed with AIDS than white women. This paper explores some of the underlying socioeconomic factors for high incidence rates of HIV among African American women—including poverty, racism, and stigma—that contribute to this health disparity and discusses current leadership approaches to addressing this problem. One common leadership approach focuses on adapting CDC intervention programs at a local level, a process that presents …

Photosensitive Polymeric Material For Worm Optical Data Storage With Two Photon Fluorescent Readout. Div.C, Kevin Belfield Apr 2009

Photosensitive Polymeric Material For Worm Optical Data Storage With Two Photon Fluorescent Readout. Div.C, Kevin Belfield

UCF Patents

Image formation via photoinduced fluorescence changes in a polymeric medium with two-photon fluorescence readout of a multi-layer structure. Fluorophore-containing polymers, possessing one or more basic functional groups, underwent protonation in the presence of a photoinduced acid generator upon exposure to a broad-band UV light source or fast-pulsed red to near-IR laser irradiation. Solution studies demonstrated formation of monoprotonated and diprotonated species upon irradiation, each resulting in distinctly different absorption and fluorescence properties. The fluorescence of the original, neutral, fluorophore was reduced upon monoprotonation, leading to a concomitant increase in fluorescence at longer wavelengths due to the monoprotonated form, the basis …

Scribble As A Possible Binding Partner For The Map Kinases Erk2 And Erk6, William Allen Apr 2009

Scribble As A Possible Binding Partner For The Map Kinases Erk2 And Erk6, William Allen

Theses and Dissertations

We worked on finding a new kinase regulator to develop basic data to be used for cancer prevention. Our work found a link between three previously unrelated proteins involved in cancer, ERK2 and ERK6 and Scribble. The MAP kinase cascade is involved in cell proliferation, which is highly deregulated in cancer. Through the screening of ERK6 associating molecules, we found the cell polarity, and cell cycle related molecule Scribble. Furthermore, we found that Scribble was a dual-specific kinase regulator. We clearly demonstrated that these ERKs interact with Scribble through the LRR and the PDZ domains of Scribble. We hypothesize that …
