The Role Of Trust In Judgment, Christophe Sage Hudspeth Apr 2009

The Role Of Trust In Judgment, Christophe Sage Hudspeth

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation I defend five claims about trust: 1) trusting and trustworthiness are conceptually but not causally connected; 2) trust is risky; 3) trust requires good will; 4) trust is a two-part relation; and 5) trust is an interpretative framework.

A concern for trust often appears in discussions about testimony and the expectation of truthfulness; Bentley Glass, John Hardwig, and Jonathan Adler each address the role of trust in science while assuming a necessary connection between trusting and trustworthiness. I argue that this conception is untenable because a justification for one fails to suffice as a justification of the …

Developing One's Self: Adoption And Identity Formation Through The Eyes Of Transracially Adopted Native American Adults, Jody Becker-Green Apr 2009

Developing One's Self: Adoption And Identity Formation Through The Eyes Of Transracially Adopted Native American Adults, Jody Becker-Green

Dissertations and Theses

Life story methods were used to explore the contextual factors that influenced the experiences and identity formation of seven Native American adults who were transracially adopted prior to the passage of the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978. These methods provided a deeper understanding of how these individuals have integrated their adoption experiences into their evolving sense of self. The life story methodology offered a way to acknowledge and validate participants' life experiences and allowed for the collection of rich information from the perspectives of the adoptees.

The life story interviews were structured to gather information on the influence of …

Resampling-Based Multiple Hypothesis Testing With Applications To Genomics: New Developments In The R/Bioconductor Package Multtest, Houston N. Gilbert, Katherine S. Pollard, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Sandrine Dudoit Apr 2009

Resampling-Based Multiple Hypothesis Testing With Applications To Genomics: New Developments In The R/Bioconductor Package Multtest, Houston N. Gilbert, Katherine S. Pollard, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Sandrine Dudoit

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The multtest package is a standard Bioconductor package containing a suite of functions useful for executing, summarizing, and displaying the results from a wide variety of multiple testing procedures (MTPs). In addition to many popular MTPs, the central methodological focus of the multtest package is the implementation of powerful joint multiple testing procedures. Joint MTPs are able to account for the dependencies between test statistics by effectively making use of (estimates of) the test statistics joint null distribution. To this end, two additional bootstrap-based estimates of the test statistics joint null distribution have been developed for use in the …

Angiotensin Modulation Of Rostral Ventrolateral Medulla (Rvlm) In Cardiovascular Regulation, Erick A. Bourassa, Alan F. Sved, Robert C. Speth Apr 2009

Angiotensin Modulation Of Rostral Ventrolateral Medulla (Rvlm) In Cardiovascular Regulation, Erick A. Bourassa, Alan F. Sved, Robert C. Speth

HPD Articles

The rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) and the presympathetic bulbospinal neurons in this region play a critical role in cardiovascular regulation. However, there is ambiguity regarding the precise anatomical coordinates of the RVLM and much still needs to be learned regarding the regulation and neurochemistry of this region. This brief review discusses some of these issues and focuses on the role of angiotensin-mediated signaling in the RVLM in blood pressure regulation.

Plant Vaccines: An Immunological Perspective., Douglas C. Hooper Apr 2009

Plant Vaccines: An Immunological Perspective., Douglas C. Hooper

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

The advent of technologies to express heterologous proteins in planta has led to the proposition that plants may be engineered to be safe, inexpensive vehicles for the production of vaccines and possibly even vectors for their delivery. The immunogenicity of a variety of antigens of relevance to vaccination expressed in different plants has been assessed. The purpose of this article is to examine the utility of plant-expression systems in vaccine development from an immunological perspective.

Bioinformatic Study Of Snps And Phenotypes In Patients With Smith-Magenis Syndrome, Tyler Andrew Cox Apr 2009

Bioinformatic Study Of Snps And Phenotypes In Patients With Smith-Magenis Syndrome, Tyler Andrew Cox

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) is a human genetic disorder that is caused by either a deletion within chromosomal region 17p11.2 or a mutation of a gene in that region –the RAI1 gene. The most prominent phenotypes observed with this disorder are mental retardation, distinctive craniofacial features, and sleep disorders caused by an inverted pattern of serotonin secretion. The current methods for molecular detection of Smith-Magenis Syndrome are reliable for the detection of the deletions within chromosomal region 17p11.2, but are not reliable in detecting mutations with the RAI1 gene. One way to enhance the detection of RAI1 mutations is with the …

Molecular Characterization Of The Human Rai1 Promoter, Rose Irene Salzberg Apr 2009

Molecular Characterization Of The Human Rai1 Promoter, Rose Irene Salzberg

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS) is a type of mental retardation disorder associated with a deletion of DNA from chromosome 17p11.2. It affects approximately18,000 individuals in the US alone. Major phenotypes are associated with a mutation in the Retinoic Acid-Inducible gene-1 (RAI1) and include: developmental delay, repetitive behaviors, short stature, and hoarse voice. Studying the molecular mechanisms that lead to SMS will help promote earlier detection of the disorder and will help develop a better treatment plan for patients. The purpose of this project was to characterize the promoter of RAI1. Studying the promoter of RAI1 will help determine the normal expression …

Next-Generation Pyrosequencing Of Gonad Transcriptomes In The Polyploid Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser Fulvescens): The Relative Merits Of Normalization And Rarefaction In Gene Discovery., Matthew C. Hale, Cory R. Mccormick, James R. Jackson, J. Andrew Dewoody Apr 2009

Jackson, J. Andrew Dewoody

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

Next-generation sequencing technologies have been applied most often to model organisms or species closely related to a model. However, these methods have the potential to be valuable in many wild organisms, including those of conservation concern. We used Roche 454 pyrosequencing to characterize gene expression in polyploid lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) gonads.

Results

Titration runs on a Roche 454 GS-FLX produced more than 47,000 sequencing reads. These reads represented 20,741 unique sequences that passed quality control (mean length = 186 bp). These were assembled into 1,831 contigs (mean contig depth = 4.1 sequences). Over 4,000 sequencing reads …
