Ethnomedical And Biomedical Health Care And Healing Practices Among The Rathwa Adivasi Of Kadipani Village, Gujarat State, India, Margaret A. Karnyski

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Rathwa of Kadipani village are adivasi (original inhabitants, tribe) residing in a rural part of Gujarat State, India. Primarily farmers, the Rathwa live in an area where development-related projects, such as mineral mining and damming on the Narmada River, are increasingly impacting their livelihood, health status, and quality of life. The local economy is impacted by uncertainty regarding access to water from the Narmada River, concerns related to the extraction of minerals from a mine in Kadipani, and economic issues that arise when the primary wage earner of the household becomes ill.

This dissertation addresses Rathwa health care practices, …

Does Unemployment Decrease Cancer Mortality?, Benjamin Torres Galick May 2009

Does Unemployment Decrease Cancer Mortality?, Benjamin Torres Galick

Economics Honors Projects

Recent research indicates that healthier lifestyles during recessions decrease the most common U.S. mortalities, but not cancer. However, they combine specific cancer mortalities with different progressions into one, possibly obscuring cancer’s link to unemployment. This paper estimates a fixed-effects regression model on unemployment and the nine most prevalent cancers between 1988 and 2002 using state-level panel data. Five cancers and total cancer are procyclical, and suggest that unemployment affects both incidence and gestation for some cancers. Consistent with the medical literature, this paper contradicts previous economic research and suggests that behavioral factors significantly impact cancer mortality.

Analysis And Classification Of Sounds Produced By Asian Elephants (Elephas Maximus), Sharon Stuart Glaeser May 2009

Analysis And Classification Of Sounds Produced By Asian Elephants (Elephas Maximus), Sharon Stuart Glaeser

Dissertations and Theses

Relatively little is known about the vocal repertoire of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus), and a categorization of basic call types and modifications of these call types by quantitative acoustic parameters is needed to examine acoustic variability within and among call types, to examine individuality, to determine communicative function of calls via playback, to compare species and populations, and to develop rigorous call recognition algorithms for monitoring populations.

This study defines an acoustic repertoire of Asian elephants based on acoustic parameters, compares repertoire usage among groups and individuals, and validates structural distinction among call types through comparison of manual and automated …

Attentional Biases And Ptsd Symptomology In Victims Of Sexual Assault And Motor Vehicle Accidents, Orin R. Redmond May 2009

Attentional Biases And Ptsd Symptomology In Victims Of Sexual Assault And Motor Vehicle Accidents, Orin R. Redmond

Theses and Dissertations

While the field of change detection and attentional biases has become an increasingly popular area of study and much is already known about Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), very little research has been done integrating these two areas. In the present study, we chose to investigate two types of traumatic experiences prevalent in the college population, motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) and sexual assaults. The flicker paradigm, used to measure change detection, was utilized to examine hypersensitivity to environments with threatening stimuli in individuals whom experienced either of these traumas. The paradigm monitored reaction times to identifying changes that took place in …

Preparation, Characterization And Ecotoxicological Evaluation Of Four Environmentally Relevant Species Of N-Isopropylacrylamide And N-Isopropylacrylamide-Co-N-Tert-Butylacrylamide Copolymer Nanoparticles, Pratap Naha, Alan Casey, Tiziana Tenuta, Iseult Lynch, Kenneth Dawson, Hugh Byrne, Maria Davoren

Articles

Poly N-isopropylacrylamide and N-isopropylacrylamide / N-tert-butylacrylamide copolymer nanoparticles of 50 to 70 nm were prepared by free radical polymerisation. The particle sizes of the copolymer nanoparticles were measured in the test media Milli-Q water, Algae Media, Daphnia Media and Microtox Diluent as a function of temperature. Whereas in Milli-Q water the particle size was seen to decrease above the lower critical solution temperature of the thermoresponsive polymer, in the test media it was seen to increase significantly, indicative of aggregation. At the temperatures employed for the ecotoxicological studies all particles, with the exception of the 50:50 copolymer existed as nanoparticles, …

A Paul Trap Mass Analyzer Consisting Of Two Microfabricated Electrode Plates, Brett J. Hansen, Zhiping Zhang, Ying Peng, Ivan W. Miller, Miao Wang, Milton L. Lee, Aaron R. Hawkins, Daniel E. Austin May 2009

A Paul Trap Mass Analyzer Consisting Of Two Microfabricated Electrode Plates, Brett J. Hansen, Zhiping Zhang, Ying Peng, Ivan W. Miller, Miao Wang, Milton L. Lee, Aaron R. Hawkins, Daniel E. Austin

Utah Space Grant Consortium

We report the design and performance of a novel radiofrequency (RF) ion trap mass analyzer, the planar Paul trap, in which a quadrupolar potential distribution is made between two electrode plates. Each plate consists of a series of concentric, lithographically deposited 100-micrometer-wide metal rings, overlaid with a thin resistive layer. To each ring is applied a different RF amplitude, such that the trapping field produced is similar to that of the conventional Paul trap. The accuracy and shape of the electric fields in this trap are not limited by electrode geometry nor machining precision, as is the case in traps …

Histogram Classification Of Acoustic Breath Sounds, Bryce E. Hill, Douglas Christensen May 2009

Histogram Classification Of Acoustic Breath Sounds, Bryce E. Hill, Douglas Christensen

Utah Space Grant Consortium

A novel approach to classifying sounds recorded at the trachea is introduced. The sounds in question are normal breath sounds and snore sounds. The sounds are classified by a the combination of a histogram classifier and a repeated pulse counting classifier. Individually the classifiers performed poorly, but when used together they performed quite well. This is an ongoing study into developing an acoustic respiratory monitor.

An Empirical Test Of Hirschi's Theory Of Delinquency, Barbara R. Vanderpool May 2009

An Empirical Test Of Hirschi's Theory Of Delinquency, Barbara R. Vanderpool

Theses & Honors Papers

Delinquency has been examined by many disciplines. There is no single explanation for delinquency. This study tests Hirschi's Theory on a group of adolescents that violate laws that have not been adjudicated delinquents. These adolescents have not been labeled delinquent, but have been placed in a facility to assist at-risk adolescents. A modified version of Elliot's National Youth Study questionnaire was used to measure delinquency. This data gathered indicated a significant decline in delinquency while participating in the program. Hirschi's theory is an empirical test found to be relevant to these adolescents.

What Is The Latest On Endangered Species Changes?, Bryan Arroyo-Vazquez

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

I address whether the new Administration will impact the Endangered Species Act. In general, the regulations under the Act have not changed and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will continue operating under the same statutory and regulatory framework as in the past. We focus on making the act work better and are working on a strategic plan to 1) focus species recovery actions strategically and 2) to avoid the need to list species by conserving them. Also addressed in this paper is climate change and its impacts on wildlife and its habitats.

A Field-Test Of Rhodamine B As A Biomarker In Raccoons, Tricia L. Fry, Tara E. Baranowski, Brandi D. Hughey, Mike R. Dunbar

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

Rhodamine B is a dye that when ingested results in fluorescent bands in growing hair and whiskers of many mammals. Previous research at Wildlife Services’ (WS) National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) found that rhodamine B is a successful biomarker in raccoon whiskers and that raccoons do not have a taste aversion to the dye when it comprises ≤ 3% of a bait. Our study assessed the ease of bait distribution, whisker collection, and evaluation of the biomarker for potential use in the Oral Rabies Vaccination (ORV) program administered by the WS National Rabies Management Program (NRMP). In collaboration with WS …

Genetic Analysis Of Population Dynamics Of The Southeastern Coyote (Canis Latrans), D. Dennis, J. Armstrong, W. Arjo, K. Brock, A. Piaggio

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

Coyotes (Canis latrans) have been extremely successful in dispersing and expanding their range that now includes all fifty states of the United States in addition to Canada and parts of Central America. These animals have generally been considered a pest species due to their adaptive ability, high reproductivity, and impact as a top predator on commercial agricultural business. Population dynamics of coyotes is still poorly understood, yet such knowledge would be beneficial to management of coyotes in all areas. The goal of this study is to determine population structure in Alabama by using microsatellite DNA markers. In addition …
