Kinetics And Phenotype Of Vaccine-Induced Cd8+ T-Cell Responses To Toxoplasma Gondii, Kimberly A. Jordan, Emma H. Wilson, Elia D. Tait, Barbara A. Fox, David S. Roos, David J. Bzik Jun 2009

Kinetics And Phenotype Of Vaccine-Induced Cd8+ T-Cell Responses To Toxoplasma Gondii, Kimberly A. Jordan, Emma H. Wilson, Elia D. Tait, Barbara A. Fox, David S. Roos, David J. Bzik

Dartmouth Scholarship

Multiple studies have established that the ability of CD8+ T cells to act as cytolytic effectors and produce gamma interferon is important in mediating resistance to the intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii. To better understand the generation of the antigen-specific CD8+ T-cell responses induced by T. gondii, mice were immunized with replication-deficient parasites that express the model antigen ovalbumin (OVA). Class I tetramers specific for SIINFEKL were used to track the OVA-specific endogenous CD8+ T cells. The peak CD8+ T-cell response was found at day 10 postimmunization, after which the frequency and numbers of antigen-specific cells …

God So Loved The World...Ministerial Religious Life In 2009, Sandra Marie Schneiders Jun 2009

God So Loved The World...Ministerial Religious Life In 2009, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

The Leadership Council invited me to speak about “vowed Religious Life” following an earlier and complementary presentation on the subject of Associates. In a sense, this is a bit like talking about “wet water” because the terms “vowed” and “Religious Life” are mutually implicating though not co-extensive. As all water is wet but not all wet things are water, so all Religious Life is vowed life but not all vowed life is Religious Life. Furthermore, there are many forms of vowed Religious Life such as monastic, mendicant, or apostolic and much that applies to one does not apply to another. …

Teaching Architects And Engineers: Up And Down The Taxonomy, Edmond P. Saliklis, Robert Arens, Joseph Hanus Jun 2009

Teaching Architects And Engineers: Up And Down The Taxonomy, Edmond P. Saliklis, Robert Arens, Joseph Hanus

Architectural Engineering

Engineering faculty and Architecture faculty both address student learning through the prism of Bloom’s taxonomy of the cognitive domain, but do so in diametrically opposite manners. Engineering faculty tend to assess student learning starting at the lowest taxonomy level, Acquisition of Knowledge, and progress in their curriculum and courses to the higher levels of Synthesis and Evaluation. Compare this to a studio environment in an undergraduate Architecture curriculum, where the faculty often begin with the highest levels, such as Evaluation in applying value judgments about the adequacy of the design and Synthesis, by putting disparate pieces of …

Atmospheric Condensed-Phase Reactions Of Glyoxal With Methylamine, David O. De Haan, Margaret A. Tolbert, Jose L. Jimenez Jun 2009

Atmospheric Condensed-Phase Reactions Of Glyoxal With Methylamine, David O. De Haan, Margaret A. Tolbert, Jose L. Jimenez

Chemistry and Biochemistry: Faculty Scholarship

[1] Glyoxal reacts with methylamine in drying cloud droplet/aerosol surrogates to form high molecular mass oligomers along with smaller amounts of 1,3-dimethylimidazole and light-absorbing compounds. The patterns observed by high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometry indicate that oligomers form from repeated imine units. The reactions are 1st order in each reactant: rate-limiting imine formation is followed by rapid dimer and oligomer formation. While excess methylamine evaporates from the droplet, half the glyoxal does not, due to self-oligomerization reactions that occur in the absence of methylamine. Glyoxal irreversibly traps volatile amine compounds in the aerosol phase, converting them into oligomers. This …

The Role Of Religious Education In The Development Of “Universal Responsibility”, Hing Wan Cheng Jun 2009

The Role Of Religious Education In The Development Of “Universal Responsibility”, Hing Wan Cheng

Conference on “Improving the Human Destiny"

This paper highlights two major issues of the time: Clash of civilizations as suggested by Samuel Huntington and the problem with secularization. The author thinks that both issues are related to (ancient) religions. To resolve these issues, the paper suggests the adoption of “Universal Responsibility” brought forward by Dalai Lama and discusses the role of religious education to have it installed.

Antibiotic Resistance In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. Peroxidase Intermediate Bypass Causes Poor Isoniazid Activation By The S315g Mutant Of M. Tuberculosis Catalase-Peroxidase (Katg), Javier Suarez, Kalina Ranguelova, Johannes Schelvis, Richard S. Magliozzo Jun 2009

Antibiotic Resistance In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. Peroxidase Intermediate Bypass Causes Poor Isoniazid Activation By The S315g Mutant Of M. Tuberculosis Catalase-Peroxidase (Katg), Javier Suarez, Kalina Ranguelova, Johannes Schelvis, Richard S. Magliozzo

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

KatG (catalase-peroxidase) in Mycobacterium tuberculosis is responsible for activation of isoniazid (INH), a pro-drug used to treat tuberculosis infections. Resistance to INH is a global health problem most often associated with mutations in the katG gene. The origin of INH resistance caused by the KatG[S315G] mutant enzyme is examined here. Overexpressed KatG[S315G] was characterized by optical, EPR, and resonance Raman spectroscopy and by studies of the INH activation mechanism in vitro. Catalase activity and peroxidase activity with artificial substrates were moderately reduced (50 and 35%, respectively), whereas the rates of formation of oxyferryl heme:porphyrin π-cation radical and the decay of …

Exercise Motivation For Breast Cancer Risk Reduction, Maureen Elaine Wood Jun 2009

Exercise Motivation For Breast Cancer Risk Reduction, Maureen Elaine Wood

Dissertations

According to The International Agency for Cancer Research (IARC), 25% of worldwide breast cancer cases are due to having a sedentary lifestyle and being overweight or obese (2002). Unfortunately, less than 50% of women participate in physical activity as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the American College of Sports Medicine and more than 25% do not participate in any physical activity at all (CDC, 2005). Perceptions of increased personal risk and self-efficacy have been shown to promote exercise participation, and as such, are key elements of protection motivation theory, used as the theoretical framework to guide …

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (Cla) Prevents Age-Associated Skeletal Muscle Loss, Md M. Rahman, Ganesh V. Halade, Amina El Jamali, Gabriel Fernandes

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

In this study, we examined the effect of CLA isomers in preventing age-associated muscle loss and the mechanisms underlying this effect, using 12-months-old C57BL/6 mice fed 10% corn oil (CO) or a diet supplemented with 0.5% c9t11-CLA, t10c12-CLA, or c9t11-CLA+t10c12-CLA (CLA-mix) for 6 months. Both t10c12-CLA and CLA-mix groups showed significantly higher muscle mass, as compared to CO and c9t11-CLA groups, measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and muscle wet weight. Enhanced mitochondrial ATP production, with higher membrane potential, and elevated muscle antioxidant enzymes (catalase and glutathione peroxidase) production, accompanied by slight increase in H2O2 production was noted in t10c12-CLA and …

Material Selection For The Actuator Design For A Biomimetic Rolling Robot Conducive To Miniaturization, Zachary S. Dotson Jun 2009

Material Selection For The Actuator Design For A Biomimetic Rolling Robot Conducive To Miniaturization, Zachary S. Dotson

Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to research, select, and test an actuator mechanism for ultimate use on a centimeter scale biomimetic rolling robot. The design of the actuator will allow a rolling motion that closely mimics cellular locomotion in addition to providing a novel motion for other applications. The basis of the design has been completed through previous mechanical design research. The existing robotic mechanism consists of a larger scale spherical body with legs which controllably extend and contract, yielding a trajectory which results in a rolling motion of the body. The previous research also derived a mathematical model …

Markov Chain Estimation Of Avian Seasonal Fecundity, Matthew A. Etterson, Richard S. Bennett, Eric L. Kershner, Jeffery W. Walk Jun 2009

Markov Chain Estimation Of Avian Seasonal Fecundity, Matthew A. Etterson, Richard S. Bennett, Eric L. Kershner, Jeffery W. Walk

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Avian seasonal fecundity is of interest from evolutionary, ecological, and conservation perspectives. However, direct estimation of seasonal fecundity is difficult, especially with multi-brooded birds, and models representing the renesting and quitting processes are usually required. To explore the consequences of modeling decisions on inference about avian seasonal fecundity, we generalize previous Markov chain (MC) models of avian nest success to formulate two different MC models of avian seasonal fecundity that represent two different ways to model renesting decisions and breeding cessation. We parameterize both Markov chains (regular and absorbing) for two species (Eastern Meadowlark, Sturnella magna, and Dickcissel, Spiza …

Simple, Defensible Sample Sizes Based On Cost Efficiency -- With Discussion And Rejoinder, Peter Bacchetti, Charles E. Mcculloch, Mark R. Segal, Richard Simon, Peter Muller, Gary L. Rosner, James A. Hanley, Stan Shapiro

COBRA Preprint Series

The conventional approach of choosing sample size to provide 80% or greater power ignores the cost implications of different sample size choices. Costs, however, are often impossible for investigators and funders to ignore in actual practice. Here, we propose and justify a new approach for choosing sample size based on cost efficiency, the ratio of a study’s projected scientific and/or practical value to its total cost. By showing that a study’s projected value exhibits diminishing marginal returns as a function of increasing sample size for a wide variety of definitions of study value, we are able to develop two simple …

Roles Of Krüppel Like Factors Klf1, Klf2, And Klf4 In Embryonic Beta-Globin Gene Expression, Yousef Alhashem Jun 2009

Roles Of Krüppel Like Factors Klf1, Klf2, And Klf4 In Embryonic Beta-Globin Gene Expression, Yousef Alhashem

Theses and Dissertations

Krüppel like factors (KLFs) are a family of 17 proteins whose main function is gene regulation by binding to DNA elements in the promoters of various genes. KLF transcription factors recognize CACCC-elements and act as activators or repressors of the gene expression. Among the 17 family members, KLF1, KLF2, and KLF4 share high homology to each other. KLF1 is the founding member of the family and is an erythroid-specific protein. KLF2 is expressed in erythroid, endothelial, and other cells. KLF4 is expressed in endothelial, smooth muscle, and other cells. In this thesis, the functions of these KLFs were reviewed in …

Characterization Of Multidrug Resistant Esbl-Producing Escherichia Coli Isolates From Hospitals In Malaysia, K.T. Lim, R. Yasin, C.C. Yeo, S.D. Puthucheary, Kwai Lin Thong

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The emergence of Escherichia coli that produce extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and are multidrug resistant (MDR)poses antibiotic management problems. Forty-seven E. coli isolates from various public hospitals in Malaysia were studied. All isolates were sensitive to imipenem whereas 36 were MDR (resistant to 2 or more classes of antibiotics). PCR detection using gene-specific primers showed that 87.5% of the ESBL-producing E. coli harbored the blaTEM gene. Other ESBL-encoding genes detected were blaOXA, blaSHV, and blaCTX-M. Integron-encoded integrases were detected in 55.3% of isolates, with class 1 integron encoded intI1 integrase being the majority. Amplification and sequence analysis of the 5CS …

Being An "Other": The Significance Of Teachers' Lived Experiences In Working With Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students, Yumiko Otsuki

Dissertations and Theses

The study's goal was to understand what contributes to the formation of teachers' perspectives regarding the education of culturally and linguistically diverse students. Its focus was to portray through teachers' stories the experiences in their lives that may have contributed to constructing who they are as people and as educators.

Four teachers from one rural district participated. Using qualitative methods, the study explores and describes incidents in teachers' lives, looking at the way their life experiences are reflected in their relationships with students. In considering ways in which those experiences may have helped shape teaching philosophies and practices, the study …
