Lived Experience: Diverse Perspectives On Raising A Child With Autism, Heather J. Brace

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study examines the lived experience of culturally diverse caregivers to children with ASD. The study is situated within the theoretical framework of the life-course theory. Specifically, the impact of the transition of diagnosis on the trajectory of the primary caregiver's life-course is explored. Further, coping mechanisms, caregiver burden/satisfaction, diagnosis, and other components which contribute to the larger construct of lived experience are discussed. Participant stories were obtained through the use of interactive interviewing techniques and transcripts were transformed into a cohesive narrative designed to evoke emotion within the reader while preserving the authenticity of the data. Further, the …

Primary Biliary Cirrhosis Associated With Hla, Il12a, And Il12rb2 Variants, Gideon M. Hirschfield, Xiangdong Liu, Chun Xu, Yue Lu, Gang Xie, Yan Lu, Xiangjun Gu, Erin J. Walker

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Primary biliary cirrhosis is a chronic granulomatous cholangitis, characteristically associated with antimitochondrial antibodies. Twin and family aggregation data suggest that there is a significant genetic predisposition to primary biliary cirrhosis, but the susceptibility loci are unknown.

Methods: To identify genetic loci conferring a risk for primary biliary cirrhosis, we carried out a genomewide association analysis in which DNA samples from 2072 Canadian and U.S. subjects (536 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis and 1536 controls) were genotyped for more than 300,000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Sixteen of the SNPs most strongly associated with primary biliary cirrhosis were genotyped in two independent …

Evolution Of Minesoils At A Coal Waste Pile: A Case Study From Rosice-Oslavany (Czech Republic), Martin Ivanov, Jiri Faimon, Petr Jarmara, Lubomir Pesak

Studia UBB Geologia

Mine soil development at abandoned coal waste pile (Kukla-Václav Nosek mine, Oslavany) represents a possibility to study initial stages of pedogenetic process. Seven soil profiles were uncovered by digging pits at the base and on the slopes and top of the waste pile. Several conclusions concerning soil development at waste pile are possible on the basis of soil profiles description and basic chemistry: 1. Intensive humification was the main pedogenetic process in the initial stages of mine soil evolution at the Kukla waste pile. There is no translocation of clay minerals even in the soil profiles evolving for about 60 …

Natural And Historic Heritage Of The Bochnia Salt Mine (South Poland), Janusz Wiewiorka, Krzysztof Dudek, Józef Charkot, Małgorzata Gonera

Studia UBB Geologia

The Bochnia Salt Mine, presented in this paper, is situated ca. 40 km E of Cracow, in the southern part of the Neogene Carpathian Foredeep, close to the Carpathian edge. In this region the rock-salt deposits formed as a result of the Late Miocene folding and local tectonic thickening of Badenian evaporites. The Bochnia deposit, situated in the almost vertical N limb of the Bochnia Anticline, stretches ca. 7 km WE, but only 15-200 m NS. Salt mining in Bochnia began in the thirteenth c. and continued until 1990. The historic part of the mine, since 1995 operated by a …

Ontogeny- And Sex-Dependent Contributions Of The Neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase (Nnos) Gene To Rewarding And Psychomotor Stimulating Effects Of Cocaine, Mara A. Balda Jun 2009

Ontogeny- And Sex-Dependent Contributions Of The Neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase (Nnos) Gene To Rewarding And Psychomotor Stimulating Effects Of Cocaine, Mara A. Balda

Open Access Dissertations

Multiple interactions between dopamine (DA), glutamate, and nitric oxide (NO) in mesolimbic and corticostriatal circuits suggest that NO may play a critical role in cocaine-induced behavioral and neural plasticity. Clinical and preclinical studies have revealed that females and adolescents display unique vulnerabilities to the behavioral and neurochemical effects of cocaine as a result of sex-dependent and ontogeny-dependent differences in dopaminergic systems. Thus, my research objectives were to investigate the contributions of the neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) gene, ontogeny, and gender on the rewarding and sensitizing effects of cocaine. I found that nNOS significantly influences the rewarding aspects of cocaine …

A Model To Describe Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Phosphorus Mass And Fluxes In Tree Islands Of Shark River Slough In The Everglades, Marcelo E. Lago

Open Access Dissertations

A numerical model has been developed to study the temporal and spatial variations of Phosphorus mass and fluxes around the tree islands of Shark River Slough in the Everglades. The developed model is based on a conceptualization of physical, chemical and biological processes that consider advective and diffusive transport of dissolved Phosphorus, adsorption on to soil, input from rainfall and external sources, and Phosphorus cycling in biomass. The biomass related processes are Phosphorus uptake, release as litter, transport as suspended litter and release from the decomposition of the deposited litter. The water flow and transport of dissolved Phosphorus in the …

Immune Cells, Inflammatory Molecules, And Cd40 In Nonhuman Primate Islets Of Langerhans, Lane Claire Katherine Coffey Jun 2009

Immune Cells, Inflammatory Molecules, And Cd40 In Nonhuman Primate Islets Of Langerhans, Lane Claire Katherine Coffey

Open Access Dissertations

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Amelioration of T1D and the prevention of its detrimental complications are possible through islet transplantation, wherein hormone-producing clusters of cells, islets of Langerhans (islets), are separated from the pancreas and transplanted into a diabetic patient. However, alterations due to the effects of organ recovery, cold ischemia time (CIT), and islet isolation may increase the inflammatory and immunogenic properties of these islets, thereby predisposing them to functional impairment and rejection in a transplant. Understanding the inflammatory properties of islets will allow for …

Chronic Illness And Smoking Cessation, Kushal Patel, David Schlundt, Celia Larson, Hong Wang, Anne Brown, Margaret Hargreaves

Public Health, Health Administration, and Health Sciences Faculty Research

Introduction

Smoking is among the leading causes of premature mortality and preventable death in the United States. Although smoking contributes to the probability of developing chronic illness, little is known about the relationship between quitting smoking and the presence of chronic illness. The present study investigated the association between diagnoses of one or more chronic diseases (diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol) and smoking status (former or current smoker). Methods

The data analyzed were a subset of questions from a 155-item telephone-administered community survey that assessed smoking status, demographic characteristics, and presence of chronic disease. The study sample consisted of 3,802 …

Predator-Induced Plasticity In Spotted Salamanders (Ambystoma Maculatum), Laurel A. Dwyer Jun 2009

Predator-Induced Plasticity In Spotted Salamanders (Ambystoma Maculatum), Laurel A. Dwyer

Honors Scholar Theses

The ability to respond plastically to the environment has allowed amphibians to evolve adaptive responses to spatial and temporal variation in predation threat. However, animals exposed to predators may also show costs of plasticity or tradeoffs. This study examines predator-induced plasticity in larval development, behavior, and metamorphosis in the spotted salamander, Ambystoma maculatum. Salamanders were raised in two treatments: with predator cues (a fish predator, genus Lepomis, on the other side of a divided tank), or without predator cues. During the larval stage the predator treatment group experienced higher mortality rates than the no-predator treatment group. Behavioral trials revealed that …

Purification Of A Water Extract Of Chinese Sweet Tea Plant (Rubus Suavissimus S. Lee) By Alcohol Precipitation, Gar Yee Koh, Guixin Chou, Zhijun Liu Jun 2009

Purification Of A Water Extract Of Chinese Sweet Tea Plant (Rubus Suavissimus S. Lee) By Alcohol Precipitation, Gar Yee Koh, Guixin Chou, Zhijun Liu

Faculty Publications

The aqueous extraction process of the leaves of Rubus suavissimus often brings in a large amount of nonactive Polysaccharides as part of the constituents. To purify this water extract for potential elevated bioactivity, an alcohol precipitation (AP) consisting of gradient regimens was applied, and its resultants were examined through colorimetric and HPLC analyses. AP was effective in partitioning the aqueous crude extract into a soluble supernatant and an insoluble precipitant, and its effect varied significantly with alcohol regimens. Generally, the higher the alcohol concentration, the purer was the resultant extract. At its maximum, approximately 36% (w/w) of the crude extract, …

Science Tools To Implement Ecosystem Based Management In Massachusetts (Draft), Mrag Americas, Incorporated, Massachusetts Ocean Partnership, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Urban Harbors Institute, University Of Massachusetts Boston

Urban Harbors Institute Publications

In this report we provide a framework for implementing ecosystem based management (EBM) and suggest a range of science information tools and their appropriate application to the decision making process. These tools can be broadly classified as modeling tools, decision analysis tools, and indicators. Modeling tools allow the user to organize data, communicate scientific findings to management and stakeholder audiences, and test alternative management scenarios. When used unwisely, however, models can preclude options, present unusable scenarios, generate results in scales that differ from management needs, and impose huge time, data, and technical requirements (Manno et al., 2008). Decision analysis tools …

Monte Carlo Green's Function Formalism For The Propagation Of Partially Coherent Light, Scott A. Prahl, David G. Fischer, Donald D. Duncan Jun 2009

Monte Carlo Green's Function Formalism For The Propagation Of Partially Coherent Light, Scott A. Prahl, David G. Fischer, Donald D. Duncan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a Monte Carlo-derived Green's function for the propagation of partially spatially coherent fields. This Green's function, which is derived by sampling Huygens-Fresnel wavelets, can be used to propagate fields through an optical system and to compute first- and second-order field statistics directly. The concept is illustrated for a cylindrical f/1 imaging system. A Gaussian copula is used to synthesize realizations of a Gaussian Schell-model field in the pupil plane. Physical optics and Monte Carlo predictions are made for the first- and second-order statistics of the field in the vicinity of the focal plane for a variety of source …

Investigating The Role Of Electric Fields In Directing Schwann Cell Behavior, Nishant Magar Jun 2009

Investigating The Role Of Electric Fields In Directing Schwann Cell Behavior, Nishant Magar

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the potential of Schwann cells (SCs) to be manipulated by electric fields (EFs) in order to improve recovery from spinal cord injury (SCI). It had long been believed that the central nervous system (CNS) is incapable of regeneration, but recent studies have proven otherwise. SC transplants are known to be useful in promoting axon regeneration after SCI, but is not sufficient for functional recovery. EFs are known to exist in vivo, and have been known to drastically affect the morphology and behavior of cells in various tissues. It was the hypothesis of this study that the conditioning …

Does Sorting Make A Difference In The Sat’S Prediction Of Course Grades And Cumulative Gpa At Macalester College?, Yuen Ting Liu

Economics Honors Projects

This paper estimates the predictive power of the SAT for college success. Most studies use GPA as a proxy for college success, but GPA is subject to differing grading standards across instructors and departments. Using individual course grades of Macalester College students from 1996 to 2005, this paper uses fixed effects to control for students sorting themselves into particular departments and courses. After controlling for sorting by major, a general trend emerges: the Math SAT is more predictive for science and math-related social science majors while the Verbal SAT is more predictive for language majors. After controlling for sorting by …

Sexuality Related Social Support Among Same-Sex Attracted Youth, Nathan D. Doty Jun 2009

Sexuality Related Social Support Among Same-Sex Attracted Youth, Nathan D. Doty

Open Access Dissertations

Supportive relationships with parents and peers are thought to be important in helping gay, lesbian, bisexual, or questioning youth cope with stressors related to their sexual identity. However, studies of same-sex attracted youth have yielded only minimal evidence for the link between social support and mental health. The lack of empirical findings may relate to inadequate measurement of the types of social support most relevant for same-sex attracted youth. Using matching theory as a theoretical framework, the present study examined same-sex attracted youth's perceptions of support for coping with problems specifically related to their sexuality. Ninety-eight same-sex attracted young people …

Books/Book chapters

Sensorized instruments which cater for the measurement of interaction forces during surgical procedures are not available on current commercial Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgical (MIRS) systems. This paper investigates the ef-fectiveness of advanced optical sensing technology (Fiber Bragg Grating) as sur-gical end effector strain/force sensors. The effects of adhesive bonding layer thickness and length are specifically addressed owing to their importance for ef-fective strain transfer and ensuring compactness of the resulting sensing arrange-ment. The strain transfer characteristics of the compound sensing arrangement are evaluated by the examination of shear transfer through the fiber coating and adhe-sive layers. Detailed analysis of the …

Dimensions Of Intuition: First-Round Validation Studies, Rosanne Vrugtman Jun 2009

Dimensions Of Intuition: First-Round Validation Studies, Rosanne Vrugtman

Dissertations

ABSTRACT This study utilized confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), canonical correlation analysis (CCA), regression analysis (RA), and correlation analysis (CA) for first-round validation of the researcher¿s Dimensions of Intuition (DOI) instrument. The DOI examined 25 personal characteristics and situations purportedly predictive of intuition. Data was collected from 302 respondents, ages 20-79, from differing occupations and educational backgrounds nationwide. Hypothesis 1: CFA disconfirmed the theorized 3- and 21-factor intuition models, finding 15 factors, accounting for 65.6% of the variance, to be the most efficient capture of intuition. Hypothesis 2: CCA tested the relationship between the 15 factors and the brain quadrants, as …

An M-Star Model Of Dynamic, Endogenous Interdependence – A.K.A. Network-Behavior Coevolution – In The Social Sciences, Jude C. Hays, Aya Kachi, Robert J. Franzese

Working Papers

Spatial interdependence, the interdependence of outcomes across units, is theoretically and substantively ubiquitous and central across the social sciences. The empirical clustering of outcomes on some dimension(s), spatial association, is also obvious in most contexts. However, outcomes may exhibit spatial association for three distinct reasons. Units may be responding similarly to similar exposure to similar exogenous internal/domestic or external/foreign stimuli (common exposure), and/or units’ responses may depend on others’ responses (contagion). A third possibility arises when the putative outcome affects the variable along which clustering occurs (selection: e.g., homophily). Severe empirical difficulties confront the accurate estimation and distinction of these …

A Truncation Mutation In Tbc1d4 In A Family With Acanthosis Nigricans And Postprandial Hyperinsulinemia, Satya Dash, Hiroyuki Sano, Justin J. Rochford, Robert K. Semple

Dartmouth Scholarship

Tre-2, BUB2, CDC16, 1 domain family member 4 (TBC1D4) (AS160) is a Rab-GTPase activating protein implicated in insulin-stimulated glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) translocation in adipocytes and myotubes. To determine whether loss-of-function mutations in TBC1D4 might impair GLUT4 translocation and cause insulin resistance in humans, we screened the coding regions of this gene in 156 severely insulin-resistant patients. A female presenting at age 11 years with acanthosis nigricans and extreme postprandial hyperinsulinemia was heterozygous for a premature stop mutation (R363X) in TBC1D4. After demonstrating reduced expression of wild-type TBC1D4 protein and expression of the truncated protein in lymphocytes from the proband, …
