Molecular Characterization Of Serogrouping And Virulence Genes Of Malaysian Vibrio Cholerae Isolated From Different Sources, Cindy Shuan Ju Teh, Kwai Lin Thong, Soo Tein Ngoi, Norazah Ahmad, Gopinath Balakrish Nair, Thandavarayan Ramamurthy

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

A pair of primers targeting the hlyA gene for Vibrio cholerae which could distinguish the classical from El Tor biotypes was designed and combined with other specific primers for ompW, rfb complex, and virulence genes such as ctxA, toxR, and tcpI in a multiplex PCR (m-PCR) assay. This m-PCR correctly identified 39 V. cholerae from clinical, water and seafood samples. The efficiency of this multiplex PCR (m-PCR) was compared with conventional biochemical and serogrouping methods. One O139 and 25 O1 V. cholerae strains including 10 environmental strains harbored all virulence-associated genes except 1 clinical strain which only had toxR and …

An Exchange-Coulomb Model Potential Energy Surface For The Ne-Co Interaction. I. Calculation Of Ne-Co Van Der Waals Spectra, Ashok K. Dham, Frederick R. W. Mccourt, William J. Meath, George C. Mcbane Jun 2009

An Exchange-Coulomb Model Potential Energy Surface For The Ne-Co Interaction. I. Calculation Of Ne-Co Van Der Waals Spectra, Ashok K. Dham, Frederick R. W. Mccourt, William J. Meath, George C. Mcbane

Peer Reviewed Articles

Exchange-Coulomb model potential energy surfaces have been developed for the Ne–CO interaction. The initial model is a three-dimensional potential energy surface based upon computed Heitler–London interaction energies and literature results for the long-range induction and dispersion energies, all as functions of interspecies distance, the orientation of CO relative to the interspecies axis, and the bond length of the CO molecule. Both a rigid-rotor model potential energy surface, obtained by setting the CO bond length equal to its experimental spectroscopic equilibrium value, and a vibrationally averaged model potential energy surface, obtained by averaging the stretching dependence over the ground vibrational motion …

Tissue Engineering Cellularized Silk-Based Ligament Analogues, Scott Sell Jun 2009

Tissue Engineering Cellularized Silk-Based Ligament Analogues, Scott Sell

Theses and Dissertations

The resurgence, and eventual rise to prominence in the field of tissue engineering, that electrospinning has experienced over the last decade speaks to the simplicity and adaptability of the process. Electrospinning has been used for the fabrication of tissue engineering scaffolds intended for use in nearly every part of the human body: blood vessel, cartilage, bone, skin, nerve, connective tissue, etc. Diverse as the aforementioned tissues are in both form and function, electrospinning has found a niche in the repair of each due to its capacity to consistently create non-woven structures of fibers ranging from nano-to-micron size in diameter. These …

Open Access: What Is It And What Does It Mean For Academic Authors?, C. Jeffrey Belliston Jun 2009

Open Access: What Is It And What Does It Mean For Academic Authors?, C. Jeffrey Belliston

Faculty Publications

What is Open Access? The modern Open Access (or OA) movement has historical roots — some fairly recent and some much older. If one has a correct understanding of these historical roots, the OA movement will properly be seen as evolutionary rather than as revolutionary. In addition to this theoretical treatment of the "what is OA" question, a treatment of what John Willinsky has called the "flavors" of OA will elucidate the very practical side of the same question." What does OA mean for academic authors? Just as with the "what is OA" question, there are multiple sides to the …

Extending The Capability Paradigm To Address The Complexity Of Disability, Jean-Luc Dubois, Jean-Francois Trani Jun 2009

Extending The Capability Paradigm To Address The Complexity Of Disability, Jean-Luc Dubois, Jean-Francois Trani

Brown School Faculty Publications

Amartya Sen looks at people’s well-being in terms of functioning and freedom, rather than in terms of the amount of goods or services consumed. The capability approach developed by Sen deals with what people are able to achieve by using these commodities. Concerning disability, he wrote: “We must take note that a disabled person may not be able to do the many things that an able-bodied individual can, with the same bundle of commodities” (Sen, 1985 p.7). The capability approach makes it possible to analyse the economic situation of people with disabilities in a different way. What becomes important is …

What Drives Decomposition Rates Of Coarse Woody Debris (Cwd)?, Steffen Herrmann, Jurgen Bauhus Jun 2009

What Drives Decomposition Rates Of Coarse Woody Debris (Cwd)?, Steffen Herrmann, Jurgen Bauhus

North American Forest Ecology Workshop

Currently increasing efforts are made to manage CWD as a habitat component and a carbon store in forest ecosystems. For this a basic understanding of patterns and rates of dead wood decomposition in different forests is crucial. The decomposition rate of CWD is mainly dependent on climatic (wood temperature, wood moisture) and substrate specific (tree species, decay stage, diameter) variables. Here, we analysed the influence of these factors using a combined approach. 1) We assessed the decay rate of Fagus sylvatica, Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris in three diameter classes (10-20 cm, 20-40 cm, >40 cm) along a climatic/altitudinal gradient …

The Oxytocinergic Anti-Inflammatory Pathway In Atherosclerosis, Daniel Addison Nation Jun 2009

The Oxytocinergic Anti-Inflammatory Pathway In Atherosclerosis, Daniel Addison Nation

Open Access Dissertations

Background. Social deprivation or isolation accelerates the progression of atherosclerosis in several animal models of the disease. Conversely, stable social environment has been associated with reduction in the extent and severity of atherosclerosis. While positive social interactions are thought to be related to this protective effect, little is known about the physiological mechanisms responsible. Recently, the neurohypophyseal peptide, oxytocin (OT), has been found to play a role in both positive social interactions and cardiovascular homeostasis, suggesting that this neuropeptide may be responsible for mediating the beneficial effects of positive social environment on atherosclerosis. The first aim of the current study …

What Happens To Student Engagement And Understanding Of Chemistry When Cross-Curricular Activities And Assignments Are Used In An Honors Chemistry Class?, Heather L. Keller

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this action research study was to determine if cross-curricular learning strategies could be used in a chemistry class to increase both student engagement and understanding of chemistry content. Two strategies were implemented in an honors chemistry course of sophomores and juniors. Participants were chosen on a voluntary basis, those students who chose not to participate still needed to complete the activities, however, their grades and responses were not included in the data. Participating students were required to complete a consent form and obtain parental permission. Students completed a creative writing activity and a kinesthetic activity in which …

Synergy And Resistance Mechanisms In R115777 And Ps-341 Models Of Myeloma And Leukemia, Robert William Buzzeo Jun 2009

Synergy And Resistance Mechanisms In R115777 And Ps-341 Models Of Myeloma And Leukemia, Robert William Buzzeo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The farnesyl transferase inhibitor R115777 (Zarnestra, Tipifarnib) has been found to have clinical activity in diverse hematopoietic tumors. Clinical efficacy, however, does not correlate with Ras mutation status or inhibition of farnesyl transferase. To further elucidate the mechanisms by which R115777 induces apoptosis and to investigate drug resistance, we have identified and characterized a R115777-resistant human myeloma cell line. 8226/R5 cells were found to be at least 50 times more resistant to R115777 compared with the parent cell line 8226/S. 8226/R5 cells were insensitive to a diverse group of antitumor agents including PS-341 (Bortezomib, Velcade). Comparison of gene expression profiles …

Potential Effects Of Climate Change On Mixed Severity Fire Regimes, Jessica Halofsky, Dave L. Peterson Jun 2009

Potential Effects Of Climate Change On Mixed Severity Fire Regimes, Jessica Halofsky, Dave L. Peterson

North American Forest Ecology Workshop

The frequency, severity, and extent of wildfire are strongly related to climate, and increasing temperatures with climate change will likely lead to changes in fire regimes in many types of ecosystems. Increased spring and summer temperatures with climate change will result in relatively early snowmelt, lower summer soil and fuel moisture, and longer fire seasons in the West. These conditions will lead to increased fire frequency and extent. Higher temperatures may also interact with vegetation and fuel characteristics to increase fire intensity and severity. Mixed severity fire regimes may be uniquely influenced by these climate-induced changes in the frequency, extent, …

A Post-Fire Index For Describing Mixed Severity Outcomes After Wildfire, Theresa Jain, Russel T. Graham, David S. Pilliod, Leigh Lentile

North American Forest Ecology Workshop

Kimmins (1997) argues that “words” and their correct usage are important and that the “careless use of language often causes confusion and misunderstanding and is a factor in many conflicts.” The public often lacks the technical knowledge to understand and interpret the use of inconsistent terminology and each discipline within resource science and management has developed their own definitions and application of specific terms. The fire community is no different. The only consistent component in the fire literature is the interchangeable use of the terms fire intensity, fire severity, and burn severity. Moreover, within each of these definitions, the terms …

Behavior And Transport Of Pelagic Coral Reef Fish Larvae In The Straits Of Florida, Klaus B. Huebert Jun 2009

Behavior And Transport Of Pelagic Coral Reef Fish Larvae In The Straits Of Florida, Klaus B. Huebert

Open Access Dissertations

The supply of coral reef fish larvae from the open ocean to reefs is vital for the persistence of local fish populations. Whether larvae are dispersed over hundreds of km or only few km depends on biophysical interactions between larvae and their environment. Relationships between environmental variables, larval swimming behavior, and larval transport were examined for reef fish larvae in the Florida Straits. In a series of research cruises, the upper 100 m of the water column was sampled with plankton nets fishing at four different depths. Variability in the vertical distributions of most larvae was not consistently related to …

The Effect Of Ambiguous Data On Phylogenetic Estimates Obtained By Maximum Likelihood And Bayesian Inference, Alan R. Lemmon, Jeremy M. Brown, Kathrin Stanger-Hall, Emily Moriarty Lemmon Jun 2009

The Effect Of Ambiguous Data On Phylogenetic Estimates Obtained By Maximum Likelihood And Bayesian Inference, Alan R. Lemmon, Jeremy M. Brown, Kathrin Stanger-Hall, Emily Moriarty Lemmon

Faculty Publications

Although an increasing number of phyiogenetic data sets are incomplete, the effect of ambiguous data on phylogenetic accuracy is not well understood. We use 4-taxon simulations to study the effects of ambiguous data (i.e., missing characters or gaps) in maximum, likelihood (ML) and Bayesian frameworks. By introducing ambiguous data in a way that removes confounding factors, we provide the first clear understanding of 1 mechanism, by which ambiguous data can mislead phylogenetic analyses. We find that in both ML and Bayesian frameworks, among-site rate variation can interact with, ambiguous data to produce misleading estimates of topology and branch, lengths. Furthermore, …
