Bacterial Keratitis: Perspective On Epidemiology, Clinico-Pathogenesis, Diagnosis And Treatment, Abdullah Al-Mujaini, Nadia Al-Kharusi, Archana Wali, Upender K.

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Bacterial keratitis is an acute or chronic, transient or recurrent infection of the cornea with varying predilection for anatomical and topographical parts of the cornea like marginal or central. It is a potentially sight-threatening corneal infection in humans that is generally found in eyes with predisposing elements, the most common of which is contact lens wear. The epidemiological data reveals the universal occurrence of this disease. With advances in the understanding of its pathogenesis, laboratory investigations like immunohistochemistry, fluorescent microscopy, enzyme immunoassays and molecular biology, and the availability of fourth generation antibiotics, the overall visual outcome in bacterial keratitis has …

A Multilevel Model To Address Batch Effects In Copy Number Estimation Using Snp Arrays, Robert B. Scharpf, Ingo Ruczinski, Benilton Carvalho, Betty Doan, Aravinda Chakravarti, Rafael A. Irizarry

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Submicroscopic changes in chromosomal DNA copy number dosage are common and have been implicated in many heritable diseases and cancers. Recent high-throughput technologies have a resolution that permits the detection of segmental changes in DNA copy number that span thousands of basepairs across the genome. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) may simultaneously screen for copy number-phenotype and SNP-phenotype associations as part of the analytic strategy. However, genome-wide array analyses are particularly susceptible to batch effects as the logistics of preparing DNA and processing thousands of arrays often involves multiple laboratories and technicians, or changes over calendar time to the reagents and …

Nutrient Allocations And Metabolism In Two Collembolans With Contrasting Reproduction And Growth Strategies, Thomas Larsen, Marc Ventura, Christian Damgaard, Erik A. Hobbie, Paul Henning Krogh

Faculty Publications

Physiological mechanisms such as allocation and release of nutrients are keys to understanding an animal's adaptation to a particular habitat. This study investigated how two detrivores with contrasting life‐history traits allocated carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) to growth, reproduction and metabolism. As model organisms we used the collembolans, Proisotoma minuta (Tullberg 1871) and Protaphorura fimata (Gisin 1952).

To estimate allocations of C and N in tissue, we changed the isotopic composition of the animal's yeast diets when they became sexually mature and followed isotope turnover in tissue, growth and reproduction for 28 days. In addition, we measured the composition of …

Plp-Dependent Α-Oxoamine Synthases: Phylogenetic Analysis, Structural Plasticity, And Structure-Function Studies On 5-Aminolevulinate Synthase, Tracy D. Turbeville Jun 2009

Plp-Dependent Α-Oxoamine Synthases: Phylogenetic Analysis, Structural Plasticity, And Structure-Function Studies On 5-Aminolevulinate Synthase, Tracy D. Turbeville

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

5-Aminolevulinate synthase (ALAS) and 8-amino-7-oxononanoate synthase (AONS) are two of four homodimeric members of the alpha-oxoamine synthase family of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzymes. The evolutionary relationships among α-oxoamine synthases representing a broad taxonomic and phylogenetic spectrum have been examined to help identify residues that may regulate substrate specificity.

The structural plasticity of ALAS has been documented in studies of functional circularly permuted ALAS variants and the single polypeptide chain ALAS dimer (ALAS/ALAS) exhibiting a greater turnover number than wild-type ALAS. An examination of the contribution of each ALAS/ALAS active site to the enzymatic activity shows that each active site makes …

OBJECTIVE: Determination the humoral immune response to HP infection in dyspeptic patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The immunological serological tests were evaluated in 80 dyspeptic patients divided into two groups: (HP +) and (HP-). Levels of specific HP IgG antibodies were determined through a specific immunological non invasive Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent …

Triangle Network Motifs Predict Complexes By Complementing High-Error Interactomes With Structural Information, Bill Andreopoulos, Christof Winter, Dirk Labudde, Michael Schroeder Jun 2009

Triangle Network Motifs Predict Complexes By Complementing High-Error Interactomes With Structural Information, Bill Andreopoulos, Christof Winter, Dirk Labudde, Michael Schroeder

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

BackgroundA lot of high-throughput studies produce protein-protein interaction networks (PPINs) with many errors and missing information. Even for genome-wide approaches, there is often a low overlap between PPINs produced by different studies. Second-level neighbors separated by two protein-protein interactions (PPIs) were previously used for predicting protein function and finding complexes in high-error PPINs. We retrieve second level neighbors in PPINs, and complement these with structural domain-domain interactions (SDDIs) representing binding evidence on proteins, forming PPI-SDDI-PPI triangles.ResultsWe find low overlap between PPINs, SDDIs and known complexes, all well below 10%. We evaluate the overlap of PPI-SDDI-PPI triangles with known complexes from …

Malik El Shabazz, also known as Malcolm X, is as relevant to today's society as he was at the height of the civil rights era. As a leader, Malcolm X possessed and demonstrated the skills of a militarily trained general, motivational speaker, CEO, coach and religious visionary - a person spiritually enlightened with a battle-tested soul. Many have used his name in anger and misinterpreted him when they want to shift away from the civil rights era language of love and brotherhood. He has become the African American equivalent of Che Guevara. It is the goal of this research to …

Parts Of The Whole: Approaching Education As A System, Dorothy Wallace Jun 2009

Parts Of The Whole: Approaching Education As A System, Dorothy Wallace

Numeracy

An educational system is a highly coupled complex system of inputs, outputs, sensors and actuators. Using an engineering perspective, this column begins the process of naming and categorizing parts of the system. It then focuses on teachers as one part of a large system, and analyzes the forces that influence how teachers work, and that draw or repel individuals to a teaching career. The growing shortage of qualified teachers can be explained by properties of the system as a whole that determine the context in which teachers do their job.

Integration With Writing Programs: A Strategy For Quantitative Reasoning Program Development, Nathan D. Grawe, Carol A. Rutz Jun 2009

Integration With Writing Programs: A Strategy For Quantitative Reasoning Program Development, Nathan D. Grawe, Carol A. Rutz

Numeracy

As an inherently interdisciplinary endeavor, quantitative reasoning (QR) risks falling through the cracks between the traditional “silos” of higher education. This article describes one strategy for developing a truly cross-campus QR initiative: leverage the existing structures of campus writing programs by placing QR in the context of argument. We first describe the integration of Carleton College’s Quantitative Inquiry, Reasoning, and Knowledge initiative with the Writing Program. Based on our experience, we argue that such an approach leads to four benefits: it reflects important aspects of QR often overlooked by other approaches; it defuses the commonly raised objection that QR is …
