Nature And Severity Of Imported Fire Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Infestations On The Mississippi River Levee, J. T. Vogt Jul 2009

Nature And Severity Of Imported Fire Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Infestations On The Mississippi River Levee, J. T. Vogt

Midsouth Entomologist

Infestations of imported fire ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) (Solenopsis invicta Buren) were mapped and quantified at four sites on the Mainline Mississippi River Levee in Mississippi. Smaller mounds predominated in areas of high insolation, and overall ant density (measured by above-ground mound volume and mound density) appeared to be highest at moderate insolation levels and lowest in areas of high insolation. More imported fire ant colonies were located on the levee slope than the adjoining landside berm. Despite trends in mound size and overall ant density, colonies were encountered on all parts of the levee, making adequate coverage of the infested …

Vertical Carbon Nanotube Devices With Nanoscale Lengths Controlled Without Lithography, Aaron D. Franklin, Robert A. Sayer, Timothy D. Sands, David B. Janes, Timothy S. Fisher Jul 2009

Vertical Carbon Nanotube Devices With Nanoscale Lengths Controlled Without Lithography, Aaron D. Franklin, Robert A. Sayer, Timothy D. Sands, David B. Janes, Timothy S. Fisher

PRISM: NNSA Center for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems

Vertical single-walled carbon nanotubes (vSWCNTs) are synthesized within highly ordered porous anodic alumina (PAA) templates supported on Si substrates. A process for obtaining thin-film PAA with long-range ordered nanopores is presented in this paper. Each nanopore contains at most one v-SWCNT that is supported by a dielectric and addressed by electrochemically formed Pd nanowire source contacts and evaporated Pd drain contacts. Characteristics of these completely vertical, two-terminal nanotube devices are presented. Control of the v-SWCNT length is demonstrated using a straightforward etching process with lengths of less than 100 nm achieved without the need for complex/expensive lithography. This effective nanoscale …

Simplified Model For Periodic Nanoantennae: Linear Model And Inverse Design, Joshua Borneman, Kuo-Ping Chen, Alexander V. Kildishev, V. M. Shalaev Jul 2009

Simplified Model For Periodic Nanoantennae: Linear Model And Inverse Design, Joshua Borneman, Kuo-Ping Chen, Alexander V. Kildishev, V. M. Shalaev

Birck and NCN Publications

We determine and use a minimal set of numerical simulations to create a simplified model for the spectral response of nanoantennae with respect to their geometric and modeling parameters. The simplified model is then used to rapidly obtain best-fit modeling parameters to match experimental results, accurately predict the spectral response for various geometries, and inversely design antennae to have a desired performance. This method is structure and model independent, and is applied here to both nanoantenna pair arrays and strips modeled using a 3D finite-element method and 2D spatial harmonic analysis, respectively. Typical numerical simulations may need hours per model, …

Ultrasensitive Protein Detection In Blood Serum Using Gold Nanoparticle Probes By Single Molecule Spectroscopy, Jiji Chen, Chungang Wang, Joseph Irudayaraj

Birck and NCN Publications

A one-step rapid and ultrasensitive immunoassay capable of detecting proteins in blood serum is developed using gold nanoprobes and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). In this approach we take advantage of the inherent photoluminescence property of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) to develop a fluorophore-free assay to observe binding entities by monitoring the diffusion of bound versus unbound molecules in a limited confocal volume. 40-nm GNPs conjugated separately with rabbit anti-IgG (Fc) and goat anti-IgG (Fab) when incubated in blood serum containing IgG forms a sandwich structure constituting dimers and oligomers that can be differentiated by to detect IgG in blood serum at …

Families For Tax Purposes: What About The Steps, Wendy G. Gerzog Jul 2009

Families For Tax Purposes: What About The Steps, Wendy G. Gerzog

All Faculty Scholarship

At least 4.4 million families in the U.S. are blended ones that include step-children and step-parents. For tax purposes, these steps receive preferential treatment for their status because they are on the one hand included as family members for many income tax benefit sections, but on the other hand excluded as family members for business entity attribution purposes and for gift and estate tax anti-abuse provisions. In the interests of fairness and uniformity, steps should be treated as family members for all tax purposes where steps have in fact voluntarily acted as their biological or adoptive counterparts, both when such …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Here we report the complete genome sequence of Teredinibacter turnerae T7901. T. turnerae is a marine gamma proteobacterium that occurs as an intracellular endosymbiont in the gills of wood-boring marine bivalves of the family Teredinidae (shipworms). This species is the sole cultivated member of an endosymbiotic consortium thought to provide the host with enzymes, including cellulases and nitrogenase, critical for digestion of wood and supplementation of the host's nitrogen-deficient diet. T. turnerae is closely related to the free-living marine polysaccharide degrading bacterium Saccharophagus degradans str. 2–40 and to as yet uncultivated endosymbionts with which it coexists in shipworm cells. Like …

Escherichia Coli O157:H7 And Other E. Coli Strains Share Physiological Properties Associated With Intestinal Colonization, Lisa Jacobsen, Lisa Durso, Tyrell Conway, Kenneth W. Nickerson Jul 2009

Escherichia Coli O157:H7 And Other E. Coli Strains Share Physiological Properties Associated With Intestinal Colonization, Lisa Jacobsen, Lisa Durso, Tyrell Conway, Kenneth W. Nickerson

Kenneth Nickerson Papers

Escherichia coli isolates (72 commensal and 10 O157:H7 isolates) were compared with regard to physiological and growth parameters related to their ability to survive and persist in the gastrointestinal tract and found to be similar. We propose that nonhuman hosts in E. coli O157:H7 strains function similarly to other E. coli strains in regard to attributes relevant to gastrointestinal colonization.

Ask An Interesting Question: Insights From A Reflective Survey Of Senior Biology Students, Don Macmillan

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007

As part of an ongoing process to assess the Information Literacy program at the University of Calgary, senior biology students were surveyed to find out what resources they actually used, and how their research habits evolved over the course of their studies. The survey asked students to reflect on their research process and the various tools they used at different stages, such as Google Scholar, Biological Abstracts, Web of Science and PubMed. The survey also asked about learning, how strategies had changed and how students learned about new tools. One of the most interesting questions asked students what they wish …

Brain Research And Education: Fad Or Foundation?, Pat Wolfe

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007

Plenary Speaker

Brain research is constantly providing new revelations about how the brain works and how we all learn. We now have a much more solid foundation on which to base educational decisions. While many current educational practices fit well with the research, others run counter to what we are learning and pose significant challenges to those who work in schools. This session will provide a clear explanation of the most educationally significant research developments and will show how this research can be translated into everyday practice.

Lead Detection In Water: Using Hydroxyapatite And Atomic Absorption, Nicolas Cantarero Jul 2009

Lead Detection In Water: Using Hydroxyapatite And Atomic Absorption, Nicolas Cantarero

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Hydroxyapatite is a mineral that is very inexpensive, easily made, and binds well to lead. In this procedure its application will be paired with Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (Flame AA) to detect lead concentrations in water to ppb levels. While ppb concentrations of lead are too dilute to produce a response from the Flame AA by using Hydroxyapatite to concentrate lead molecules from a larger volume and dissolving the Hydroxyapatite into a smaller volume it may be able to produce a response. The method could provide an inexpensive, efficient, and accurate way to detect lead concentrations to the ppb level …

Use Of Co2 Concentration Difference Or Co2 Balance To Assess Ventilation Rate Of Broiler Houses, Hongwei Xin, Hong Li, Robert T. Burns, Richard S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults, John W. Earnest Jul 2009

Use Of Co2 Concentration Difference Or Co2 Balance To Assess Ventilation Rate Of Broiler Houses, Hongwei Xin, Hong Li, Robert T. Burns, Richard S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults, John W. Earnest

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Ventilation rate (VR) is one of the two key elements for quantifying aerial emissions from animal production facilities. Direct, continuous measurement of building VR can be challenging and impractical under certain circumstances,e.g., naturally ventilated animal housing or a large number of ventilation fans in the building. This study examined the suitability of estimating VR of broiler houses with built‐up litter (mixture of manure and bedding), when supplemental heating was not in use, through either carbon dioxide (CO2) balance or the relationship of VR to CO2 concentration difference between exhaust and inlet air. The reference VR was based …

"Aquí No Pasó Nada": Terror, Remembrance And Healing In A Guatemalan "Green Zone", William G. Wagner

Anthropology ETDs

This research focuses on the experiences of survivors of political violence and their healers in Momostenango, Totonicapán. The majority population of Momostenango is Kiche' Maya. During Guatemala's civil war (1960-1996), the state used terror to silence popular resistance and to neutralize the threat of insurgent guerilla forces that drew wide support from Maya communities. From 1981 to 1983 state army and paramilitary forces resorted to scorched earth tactics that two different truth commissions subsequently characterized as genocidal. During the war, the military designated the town as a 'green zone' (a region sympathetic to and supportive of the military's counterinsurgency project). …

Biodiversity Conservation And Sustainable Use: Malaysian Scenario, Mohd Sofian-Azirun, Y.N. Rashid

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Malaysia is in partnership to international agreements such as for Biodiversity, Climate Change, Endangered species, Hazardous wastes, Marine life conservation, Tropical timber 83 and Law of the sea. Like all countries in the pact, she is currently implementing the national biodiversity strategies and action plans that have been strategized. The progression has led to increase in awareness of biodiversity status and enhancement of protected areas, with current statistics of 63% acclaimed forests and woodland in contrast to 10% land use for permanent crops. In spite of this there are indicative trends that Malaysia too contributes to the 42% loss of …
