Puncture-Resistance Of Gloves For Handling Bats, Patricia W. Freeman, Cliff A. Lemen Jul 2009

Puncture-Resistance Of Gloves For Handling Bats, Patricia W. Freeman, Cliff A. Lemen

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

We quantified protection given by a variety of gloves against bat bites by using steel indenters to simulate teeth and measuring forces needed to puncture the gloves. Level of protection given by gloves was compared to expected bite forces and tooth sharpness of bats. Cotton, plastic-coated synthetic fabric, and proprietary materials advertised as puncture- and cut-resistant were easy to penetrate compared to leather gloves. Split leather gives the highest level of protection, but with reduced dexterity. These are best for handling larger bats (>40 g) or if higher safety is preferred. Deerskin gives reasonable protection without much loss in …

Applications Of Electricity In The Rehabilitation And Health Monitoring Of Concrete Structures, Saiprasad Vaidya Jul 2009

Applications Of Electricity In The Rehabilitation And Health Monitoring Of Concrete Structures, Saiprasad Vaidya

Doctoral Dissertations

The dissertation research work presented herein consists of two separate findings: one investigates a potential new coating technique that could be used to rehabilitate deteriorated concrete sewer pipes, and the other researches inducing electrical conductivity into geopolymer concrete to serve as smart material by being able to sense stress changes. Both applications utilize electricity to enhance the performance and/or functionality of hardened cementitious materials.

Microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC) in concrete wastewater conveyance systems is a leading deterioration mechanism in such structures. This work focuses on breaking the MIC cycle by preventing colonization of the bacteria responsible for converting hydrogen sulfide …

The Taming Of The Youth : Discourse, Politics, And Fictional Representation In The Early Prc = 規訓與狂歡的敘事 : 五〇年代大陸文學中的青春論述、政治及小說再現, Mingwei Song Jul 2009

The Taming Of The Youth : Discourse, Politics, And Fictional Representation In The Early Prc = 規訓與狂歡的敘事 : 五〇年代大陸文學中的青春論述、政治及小說再現, Mingwei Song

Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報

This essay is a study of the cultural manifestation of youth in the early years of the People's Republic of China (PRC). It does not aim to examine the focus on youth merely as a social phenomenon, but instead considers youth as a symbolic figure that had a profound influence on the conceptions of nationhood and modernity. Focusing on Mao's discourse on youth and its effects on literature and politics, I argue that youth is a discursive constellation that is constructed through endless choices, creations, and readjusting of symbols, images, and representational modes. Its manifestation in literary imagination encodes and …

Examination Of The Clinical Benefit Of Adding Reversal Theory Concepts To The Expressive Writing Paradigm, Stephanie Ellis Jul 2009

Examination Of The Clinical Benefit Of Adding Reversal Theory Concepts To The Expressive Writing Paradigm, Stephanie Ellis

Doctoral Dissertations

Expressive writing as a form of emotional disclosure produces many physical and psychological benefits (Pennebaker, 2004). Central to the present study are findings that expressive writing decreases symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD (Koopman, Ismailji, Holmes, Classen, Palesh, & Wales, 2005; Opre, Coman, Kallay, Rotaru, & Manier, 2005; Russ, 1992). Reversal Theory (RT) suggests that individuals experience the world from eight different psychological states including serious, playful, conforming, rebellious, mastery, sympathy, self, and other (Apter, 2007). Teaching individuals to be aware of and elicit these states also decreases depression and anxiety (Charat, 2006). The present study sought to determine if …

Assessment Of Adults` Opinion On The Ideal Family Size And Family Well-Being In Ogun State, Nigeria, O.O. Kalesanwo, A. Emmanuel Jul 2009

Assessment Of Adults` Opinion On The Ideal Family Size And Family Well-Being In Ogun State, Nigeria, O.O. Kalesanwo, A. Emmanuel

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Family can be taken to mean a unit consisting of husband and wife, and their children, (Moses and Adewale 2002). Moses, Patric and Olarenwaju (2001) quoting Otite and Ogion (1981) reported that family as a bio-social group, meaning that family has both biological and social aspects. Moses and Adewale (2002) quoting Murdrock (1965) defines family as a social group characterized by common residence, economic, cooperation, and reproduction. They reported that family is a group of persons united by ties of marriage, blood, or adoption constituting a single house hold; interacting and communicating with each other in their respective social role …

Science Homework And Parental Involvement: Factors Influencing Behaviors And Attitudes, Dana Harwell, Kate Brown Jul 2009

Science Homework And Parental Involvement: Factors Influencing Behaviors And Attitudes, Dana Harwell, Kate Brown

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The purpose of this study is to understand confounding information regarding homework and school achievement. Recent research has sought to identify specific factors impacting student success as it relates to homework including parental involvement, parental education, gender, socio-economic status, computer and internet use, extra-curricular activities, and other factors. Unfortunately, the results of these studies have lacked consensus. The review of the literature shows attempts have been made to isolate co-variates along with important factors such as gender, parental involvement, and student characteristics, but the results have been unclear. This study utilized a qualitative design with interviews, observations, and collection of …

Oral And Written Communication In Classroom Mathematics, Lindsey Sample Jul 2009

Oral And Written Communication In Classroom Mathematics, Lindsey Sample

Action Research Projects

In this action research study of my classroom of sixth grade mathematics, I investigated the impact of an increase in student oral and written communication on student level of understanding and student self-confidence. I also investigated the changes in my teaching as I increased opportunities for student oral and written communication of mathematics. While I discovered that student level of understanding was not necessarily increased if written communications were increased, I did find that there seemed to be a rise in student level of self-confidence and understanding throughout the course of the research project due to an increase in oral …

Families Redefined: Kinship Groups That Deserve Benefits, Jane E. Cross, Nan Palmer, Charlene L. Smith

Faculty Scholarship

In Families Redefined: Kinship Groups that Deserve Benefits, the authors examine 1) the nature of kinship families, 2) the benefits accorded to married couples, 3) kinship families that lack protection and benefits, 4) the impact of denying kinship families protection and benefits, 5) the use of contract law in kinship relationships, and 6) using legislation to benefit kinship relationships.

This exploration of expanding family law protections to kinship groups addresses a series of interrelated topics. The first two sections of the article explore the characteristics and creation of kinship families in different societies. The third section addresses the legal …

Altruism, Markets, And Organ Procurement, Julia D. Mahoney Jul 2009

Altruism, Markets, And Organ Procurement, Julia D. Mahoney

Law and Contemporary Problems

For decades, the dominant view among biomedical ethicists, transplantation professionals, and the public at large has been that altruism, not financial considerations, should motivate organ donors. Proposals to compensate sources of transplantable organs or their survivors, although endorsed by a number of economists and legal scholars, have been denounced as unethical and impracticable. Organ transplantation is said to belong to the world of gift, as distinct from the market realm. Paying for organs would inject commerce into a sphere where market values have no place and would transform a system based on generosity and civic spirit into one of antiseptic, …

Effect Of Chronic Treatment With A Cyclooxygenase Inhibitor On Reproductive Parameters In Male Rat, Sheikh A Saeed, Naheed Anwar, Khalid M Khan, Noorjehan Sarfraz

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

BACKGROUND: Indomethacin is a member of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) commonly used for treatment of gout, arthritis, and other inflammatory conditions. It has been shown to inhibit ovarian prostaglandins synthesis in mammals, birds, fish and reptiles. However, the effects of its chronic administration on male reproductive functions remain largely unknown. Using rat as a model, we studied the effect of chronic treatment with indomethacin on the male reproductive system.

METHODS: Testosterone was measured in the serum, testicular tissue, and testicular interstitial fluid by radioimmunoassay. Moreover, we also studied the direct effect of indomethacin in vitro on luteinizing hormone stimulated testosterone …

Rna Search With Decision Trees And Partial Covariance Models, Jennifer A. Smith Jul 2009

Rna Search With Decision Trees And Partial Covariance Models, Jennifer A. Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The use of partial covariance models to search for RNA family members in genomic sequence databases is explored. The partial models are formed from contiguous subranges of the overall RNA family multiple alignment columns. A binary decision-tree framework is presented for choosing the order to apply the partial models and the score thresholds on which to make the decisions. The decision trees are chosen to minimize computation time subject to the constraint that all of the training sequences are passed to the full covariance model for final evaluation. Computational intelligence methods are suggested to select the decision tree since the …

Impact Of Change In Maternal Age Composition On The Incidence Of Caesarean Section And Low Birth Weight: Analysis Of Delivery Records At A Tertiary Hospital In Tanzania, 1999–2005, Projestine S. Muganyizi, Hussein Kidanto

Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa

Background Previous studies on change in maternal age composition in Tanzania do not indicate its impact on adverse pregnancy outcomes. We sought to establish temporal changes in maternal age composition and their impact on annual Caesarean section (CS) and low birth weight deliveries (LBWT) at Muhimbili National Hospital in Tanzania.

Methods We conducted data analysis of 91,699 singleton deliveries that took place in the hospital between 1999 and 2005. The data were extracted from the obstetric data base. Annual proportions of individual age groups were calculated and their trends over the years studied. Multiple logistic analyses were conducted to ascertain …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Procedures for sampling genomic DNA from live billfishes involve manual restraint and tissue excision that can be difficult to carry out and may produce stresses that affect fish survival. We examined the collection of surface mucous as a less invasive alternative method for sourcing genomic DNA by comparing it to autologous muscle tissue samples from Atlantic blue marlin (Makaira nigricans), white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus), sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus), and swordfish (Xiphias gladius). Purified DNA from mucous was comparable to muscle and was suitable for conventional polymerase chain reaction, random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis, …

Collaboration: The Future Of Governance, Philip J. Harter Jul 2009

Collaboration: The Future Of Governance, Philip J. Harter

Journal of Dispute Resolution

The thesis of this paper is that collaboration-the public and private spheres working together while recognizing the legitimate role of each-should play a major role in making these important decisions. Can collaboration diminish the rancor? Certainly not on its own, but it can lead people to recognize that others are listening and trying to reach appropriate decisions. That alone has powerful political consequences.' Should the procedures described here be used for all public decisions? Of course not. But they should be considered for major ones precisely because they are effective, and a form of collaboration-a recognition that others have important …
