Triptolide Is A Potential Therapeutic Agent For Alzheimer’S Disease, Matthew Allsbrook Jul 2009

Triptolide Is A Potential Therapeutic Agent For Alzheimer’S Disease, Matthew Allsbrook

Theses and Dissertations

Mounting evidence indicates an involvement of inflammation in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. While there are other mechanisms involved, it is this role of inflammatory processes that we wish to investigate. Triptolide is the major constituent in the Chinese herb, Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F, and has been used for centuries as part of Chinese herbal medicine. The four ringed structure has close homology to drugs of the steroid class and it has been shown to be beneficial as an anti-inflammatory for rheumatoid arthritis and for treatment of certain cancers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential therapeutic …

Two Notions Of Privacy Online, Avner Levin, Patricia S. Abril Jul 2009

Two Notions Of Privacy Online, Avner Levin, Patricia S. Abril

Articles

Users of social networking websites tend to disclose much personal information online yet seem to retain some form of an expectation of privacy. Is this expectation of privacy always unreasonable? How do users of online social networks define their expectations of privacy online?

These questions were the impetus behind an empirical study, the findings of which are presented in this Article. The project, simultaneously conducted in Canada, at Ryerson University, and in the United States, at the University of Miami, consisted of a survey regarding personal information protection and expectations of privacy on online social networks (OSNs). Approximately 2,500 young …

Complexity, Cofactors, And The Failure Of Aids Policy In Africa, Eileen Stillwaggon Jul 2009

Complexity, Cofactors, And The Failure Of Aids Policy In Africa, Eileen Stillwaggon

Economics Faculty Publications

Global AIDS policy still treats HIV as an exceptional case, abstracting from the context in which infection occurs. Policy is based on a simplistic theory of HIV causation, and evaluated using outdated tools of health economics. Recent calls for a health systems strategy – preventing and treating HIV within a programme of comprehensive health care – have not yet influenced the silo approach of AIDS policy.

Evidence continues to accumulate, showing that multiple factors, such as malnutrition, malaria and helminthes, increase the risk of sexual and vertical transmission of HIV. Moreover, complementary interventions that reduce viral load, improve immune response, …

2009 Key Strategic Issues List, Antulio J. Echevarria Dr.

Articles & Editorials

Unlike other lists that generally reflect issues which are operational or tactical in nature, the focus of the Key Strategic Issues List is strategic. The spotlight is, in other words, on those items that senior Army and Department of Defense leaders should consider in providing military advice and formulating military strategy. At present, the U.S. military is engaged in a changing situation in Iraq and an increasing presence in Afghanistan, as well as efforts to restore balance in force sizing and structure.

New Trends In Global Outsourcing Of Commercial Surrogacy: A Call For Regulation, Ruby L. Lee

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

In a time where advancement of reproductive technologies evolve in a rapid pace beyond the ability of the government to anticipate public social costs associated with it; this Note seeks to address the legal, policy and ethical challenges surrounding commercial surrogacy - particularly from a global context. First, this Note explores India's role in commercial surrogacy, as a case study, to understand the growing global demand for surrogacy arrangements in countries that do not regulate commercial surrogacy. Second, this Note reviews comparatively the weaknesses in existing commercial surrogacy laws among some of the European Union states and the United States. …

Decoupling Development And Energy Flow During Embryonic Diapause In The Cricket, Allonemobius Socius, Julie A. Reynolds, Steven C. Hand Jul 2009

Decoupling Development And Energy Flow During Embryonic Diapause In The Cricket, Allonemobius Socius, Julie A. Reynolds, Steven C. Hand

Faculty Publications

Respiration rate increases 6.3-fold during 15days of post-oviposition development in embryos of the Southern ground cricket, Allonemobius socius. This ontogenetic increase in metabolism of non-diapause insects is blocked during diapause, such that metabolic rate is only 36% of the rate measured for 15 days developing embryos. Surprisingly, however, there is not an acute metabolic depression during diapause entry at the point when developmental ceases (4-5days post-oviposition), as measured by blockage of morphological change and DNA proliferation. The results indicate a decoupling of developmental arrest from metabolism. Both non-diapause and diapause embryos have unusually high [AMP]:[ATP] ratios and low [ATP]:[ADP] ratios …

Environmental Regulation Of Carbon Isotope Discrimination And Internal Co2 Conductance In C3 Leaves, Christopher Paul Bickford Jul 2009

Environmental Regulation Of Carbon Isotope Discrimination And Internal Co2 Conductance In C3 Leaves, Christopher Paul Bickford

Biology ETDs

Stable carbon isotopes are powerful tools for elucidating leaf- and ecosystem- level processes, and recent technological developments provide new opportunities to assess the isotopic flux during leaf gas exchange. In these studies I used a tunable diode laser spectroscope coupled to a infra-red gas analyzer to measure the isotopic composition of leaf gas exchange at high frequency in both field and greenhouse settings and assess environmental regulation of carbon isotope discrimination (Δ) and internal conductance of CO2 to sites of carboxylation (gi). I measured Δ and gi across diurnal and seasonal periods in field-grown Juniperus monosperma trees and used these …

Description Of Thermonectus Nigrofasciatus And Rhantus Binotatus (Coleoptera:-Dytiscidae) Mating Behavior, Lauren M. Cleavall Jul 2009

Description Of Thermonectus Nigrofasciatus And Rhantus Binotatus (Coleoptera:-Dytiscidae) Mating Behavior, Lauren M. Cleavall

Biology ETDs

Models of sexual conflict predict that diving beetles should respond morphologically and behaviorally during mating events to overcome the opposing sex. Morphological and behavioral adaptations may result from pressures by one sex to overcome resistance to mating attempts of the opposite sex. Morphological data supports an evolutionary arms race in diving beetles (Dytiscidae) exhibited in a series of adaptations attributable to sexual conflict between males and females. Males of certain Dytiscinae have sucker shaped adhesion setae on their front and mid tarsi to improve attachment to the females elytra prior to and during mating, whereas females have evolved grooves, ridges, …

Transient De-Coupling Of Photosynthesis And Stomatal Conductance In Response To Leaf Primary Vein Cut In Helianthus Annuus, Laura Elizabeth Green Jul 2009

Transient De-Coupling Of Photosynthesis And Stomatal Conductance In Response To Leaf Primary Vein Cut In Helianthus Annuus, Laura Elizabeth Green

Biology ETDs

Control of stomatal aperture is the primary way plants regulate gas exchange in the short-term, but what triggers stomatal responses to water stress is still debated. Chlorophyll-a fluorescence imaging, local leaf temperature, and gas exchange were measured simultaneously following a cut to primary leaf vein of Helianthus annuus to access the effect of local leaf xylem cavitation on leaf function. The treatment was repeated under 3 different vapor pressure deficit (VPD) conditions. Surprisingly, photosynthesis (A) and stomatal conductance (gs) responded inversely immediately following the treatment, indicating that A was not CO2 limited by stomatal closure. Comparisons of fluorescence images and …

Litter decomposition recycles nutrients and causes large ?uxes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. It is typically assumed that climate, litter quality and decomposer communities determine litter decay rates, yet few comparative studies have examined their relative contributions in tropical forests. 2. We used a short-term litterbag experiment to quantify the effects of litter quality, placement and mesofaunal exclusion on decomposition in 23 tropical forests in 14 countries. Annual precipitation varied among sites (7605797 mm). At each site, two standard substrates (Raphia farinifera and Laurus nobilis) were decomposed in ?ne- and coarse-mesh litterbags both above and below ground for approximately …

Genome-Wide Mapping Of Boundary Element-Associated Factor (Beaf) Binding Sites In Drosophila Melanogaster Links Beaf To Transcription, Nan Jiang, Eldon Emberly, Olivier Cuvier, Craig M. Hart

Faculty Publications

Insulator elements play a role in gene regulation that is potentially linked to nuclear organization. Boundary element-associated factors (BEAFs) 32A and 32B associate with hundreds of sites on Drosophila polytene chromosomes. We hybridized DNA isolated by chromatin immunoprecipitation to genome tiling microarrays to construct a genome-wide map of BEAF binding locations. A distinct difference in the association of 32A and 32B with chromatin was noted. We identified 1,820 BEAF peaks and found that more than 85% were less than 300 bp from transcription start sites. Half are between head-to-head gene pairs. BEAF-associated genes are transcriptionally active as judged by the …

Embryonic Diapause Highlighted By Differential Expression Of Mrnas For Ecdysteroidogenesis, Transcription And Lipid Sparing In The Cricket Allonemobius Socius, Julie A. Reynolds, Steven C. Hand

Faculty Publications

Embryos of the ground cricket, Allonemobius socius, enter diapause 4-5days post-oviposition and overwinter in this dormant state that is characterized by developmental arrest. Suppressive subtractive hybridization and quantitative real-time PCR reveal eight candidate genes in pre-diapause embryos that show promise as regulators of diapause entry, when compared with embryos not destined for diapause. Identifications are based both on the magnitude/consistency of differential mRNA abundances and the predicted functions of their products when placed in context of the physiological and biochemical events of diapause characterized in our companion paper. The proteins CYP450, AKR and RACK1 (associated with ecdysteroid synthesis and signaling) …

The Great Depression, The New Deal, And The Current Crisis, Alexander J. Field Jul 2009

The Great Depression, The New Deal, And The Current Crisis, Alexander J. Field

Economics

In the past year, a rising tide of antagonism to the New Deal has formed among some economists and writers, claiming that the New Deal policies made the Great Depression worse. Is there any basis in fact to New Deal denialism? The noted economic historian Alexander Field has closely studied the period. He shows the central weaknesses of these arguments and makes a strong case that the New Deal made a remarkable contribution to the U.S. economy and the American way of life.
